Whenever we travel to Portage to visit family, we usually gather at Texas Corral for a family dinner. During a short visit in March, I decided to stop in for a solo meal. I've always enjoyed their food in the past, but this experience was very different. I ordered my steak medium rare, but it arrived closer to medium well. It was tough, lukewarm, and honestly tasted like it came from a much older cut of meat. I also had to send my baked potato back because it was barely warm, and the replacement wasn't much better. Overall, the quality of the meal has clearly declined, yet the prices have gone up. Unfortunately, there's a much better steakhouse just down the block to the east--one that even serves great dinner rolls. read more

Well first of all our waiter Jordan was fantastic!!! I cant say enough about him. He was the best thing about the whole meal. Now to the steaks. First they brought out my steak asked for med/rare got well done and was super thin and I ordered the 16 oz ribeye. Then the misses steak came out about 10 minutes later; and it was well well done. So they put in another steak for me and it came out raw. I will say the misses second filet came out fine. (Both these were not at the same time) The female manager was very "oh well" and just left regarding my steak. Apparently this is a regular thing with the cook staff. So I would go here and ask for Jordan. Enjoy his company and service. The rest though I would go somewhere else unfortunately. Very disappointed in the food. Service was fantastic I would Jordan a 5. Visited on 11/4. The food was decent. I absolutely love their bread and butter. My boyfriend ordered ribs and steak. He loved that. I got the filet 6oz which was delicious. I ordered a Margarita and he had just a pop. However our server was very not into her job. Hostess sat us, she was wonderful, and then got our drinks orders. Mind you there was at most 5 tables sat in the whole restaurant. Server finally came over, didn't introduce herself, set down plates and asked if we wanted appetizers. We said no and that we needed a minute. She comes back about 5 minutes later, took our food orders, and then didn't even say anything or ask if we needed anything now. Didn't see her for about another 10 minutes, had to flag down the hostess for more bread and then she brought out our soup and salad. Asked for napkins and she brings us cocktail napkins. The really small square kind. Which if that's all they have fine, but for ribs that won't cut it. So at this point our bread baskets, eaten soups and salad plates are sitting on our table still. Ate our food and yet again server was nowhere to be found. Had to flag down the hostess for a box and said I'm not sure where our server is but we need the check and a box. Now our drinks are empty and still have empty plates and bread baskets sitting on the table still. Server comes to drop off the box and check, still doesn't take anything, and says I'll take it when your ready and walks away again. Never asked for refills, never asked if we wanted dessert, never asked if she could do anything else. Her other tables had left so I was pretty sure she only had us left. I was EXTREMELY NOT HAPPY with her service. I gave the two stars for food. But just a very not good experience overall. read more

A truly honest review of this Texas Corral location: Me and my fiancé came here for Valentine's dinner because everywhere else had a wait of 2-3 hours. Upon arrival we were told it would be 45 minutes to be seated, no big deal. But there was a mix up with another party with the same last name, so we ended up waiting about an hour overall. When we were finally sat, it was at least 7 minutes until someone came around to give us our drinks, and she informed us our server would be with us shortly. At this point, the number of tables had now decreased so there was no reason for our server to show up another 5 minutes after our drinks arrived. She didn't seem too friendly which was understandable, being Valentine's Day she probably worked a long busy shift, so we just moved on from that. We ordered the Texas Flower appetizer, which was our first time ever trying it. It was slightly crispy on the top but had raw batter all along the bottom of the onion. It was so undercooked my fiance had to run to the bathroom after a few bites to throw it up. We wanted to let our server or a manager know that we weren't satisfied, but the manager we kept seeing was busy running food to the other tables so we figured we'd wait until our server came back around. She quickly came to drop off our soups for our entrees and hurried back to the kitchen so we were going to catch her when she came back around next. It was a good 20 minutes without seeing her at all, and nobody once came to check and see how we were doing. When our food came out, she didn't even drop it off but had a different server come and give it to us. She was very nice and friendly, and we didn't bother her about the appetizer because she had her own tables to take care of. 5 minutes after our entrees came out, our server finally appeared to check on us after being nowhere to be found. I told her that we would like our appetizer taken away to which she responded "you want a box?" But we clearly hadn't eaten more than a few bites of it. I clarified that we wanted it thrown away because it was raw and she took it off our bill. My sirloin and potato were okay, but his chicken tenders also had issues. The second one he started eating was also undercooked and he said it was also raw . The highlight of our meal were our soups and the rolls they send to the table once you're sat. We left feeling upset along with him being sick from the raw Texas flower. What a waste of money! Texas corral needs to retrain their cooks on how to cook food properly as well as teach the server we had to be more attentive. It isn't fair to not be able to share issues with your food to your server because she's hiding in the back of the restaurant instead of taking care of her tables. read more

I don't want to give this place a one star, it's just not worth it but here's my review.. The bartender was just absolutely horrible at making margaritas and drinks period. I just couldn't under how someone that works in a dive bar could get that many drinks wrong. Goodness 6 of them later and none were good.. let's go on to the food.. it's just laughable, no seasoning whatsoever.. The steak had no seasoning, I had the Shrimp Alfredo and it just tasted like water I swear.. We didn't get our dinner rolls when we sat down. They didn't come until after our appetizer arrived and then they were not baked enough and had a really strong yeast, almost sour smell, and were not edible. We did not like the mushroom appetizers at all. Or NY Strips were ok, cooked medium rare, nice char, but we both had a thick vein running through, so not a quality piece of meat. This used to be one of my favorite places. The food and service used to be great. Sadly that isn't the way it is anymore. The food was terrible and so was the service. We didn't get bread and butter, but everyone else did, and we couldn't ask because the waitress did not come back until the end of our meal. The first time I went to Texas Corral, I was really disappointed. I gave it a second chance today and decided to write this review because I was disappointed yet again. Both times I ordered a plain sirloin and chili and both times the food was very bland and neither time was my steak cooked to the correct temperature. I like my steak rare and I make sure to ask for it "VERY RARE", so I don't get why it came out medium. For a place that pretty much specializes in steak and ribs, I'm not sure why it would be one of the most flavorless pieces of meat I've ever eaten in my life. Also, when it came out, the presentation was TERRIBLE. The fries were scattered all over the plate, the mushrooms on my steak looked like mushy bugs, and laying on the plate next to my meat was the little plastic stick that lets the server know which steak is what temp. Both times I came in, it was when it was fairly slow. I don't want to say that our service was ever "bad", but it definitely wasn't good. We were rarely checked up on and I felt guilty asking for anything. When it comes down to it, I'm mostly just sad that the food is so basic for the money and the waiters are just not very friendly. Maybe one day I'll go back and it'll be better, in which case I'd be more than happy to amend my review, but after today I don't feel any reason to hurry back. read more

I've been here many times and tried all different cuts of meat and they all have been delicious and cooked just right. I haven't had a cold potato or cold anything for that matter from here. Great local place where they know you are a regular. The staff is friendly and welcoming. I love the hot rolls and my wife loves the side salads that come with our meal. Went there tonight for dinner. Seated at the bar and to start with server too busy texting on the phone to acknowledge us. Then she must have been having a bad night because she wasn't pleasant until she handed us the check trying to get a better tip. My dinnerware was wrapped in a napkin that look like it had been already used. Wife was going over the menu when the server came back and asked if we were ready and we said we needed more time. She leaned on the cooler and doodled on the pad looking at the wife until my wife felt uncomfortable enough she just order something. My steak came and while I ordered it rare it was actually under cooked and cold inside. Wife's sweet potato came and didn't taste good. When the server came back when we were basically finished the wife told her about the potato. Server offered a new one and we said no but she brought it anyway. Came here with a party of 7. This is one of my first actual restaurant experience in US. It's pretty cool how they have a bucket of peanuts where you just throw the skin anywhere in the floor, "Texan" style. This place has good and prompt service. We were always made sure and asked if everything is alright and drinks were topped off without asking. The good was also not bad and it came really fast (not sure if that's good or bad). Taste wise, I've tasted it the same as other restaurants I've been to so I am not sure if it was authentic Texan style BBQ. I have been to several chains of steakhouse restaurants in Portage IN that serves your typical favorites. I personally enjoy dining at Texas Corral whether it is during dinner or lunch hours because the wait time is very minimal. My favorite time of the day to dine at Texas Corral is between 1:00pm-4:00pm. I noticed during those time slots I am skipping the lunch rush and bypassing the arrival of the soon to be dinner rush. The most I have ever waited to be seated was ten minutes. Texas corral supplies every customer with a basket of fresh baked dinner rolls served with cinnamon butter or regular butter if you prefer on the side. The dinner rolls are unlimited, so you may indulge in as many as you'd like. Although I have not tasted everything on the menu I can count for what I have tried to be very delicious. Most of their food appears to resemble traditional meals you would find at Texas Roadhouse or Longhorn Steakhouse. My favorite thing on the Menu to order is the Texas Corral chicken. Each time I have gone to Texas Corral the corral chicken has never failed to meet my expectations. The chicken has always been tender and very tasty. The corral chicken includes a choice of a side and you may have soup or salad with your meal. The 10 ounce boneless chicken breast is lightly breaded and it is sauced with their very own creamy white wine sauce. After a long week of work last week I decided to go out to eat with my mother around 2:30ish on a Tuesday. Instead of ordering my usual order of the Texas Corral chicken, mashed potatoes, and soup I decided to change things up a bit and order a steak medium rare, French fries, and chili. I typically order a raspberry lemonade but their ice machine was broken and they were only serving cans of soda which by the way they did not have too many options to choice from. I ordered a glass of Pepsi hoping the drink would refresh my thirst after a long day in the sun. The Pepsi was not satisfying to say the least because the soda tasted flat from the beginning and lacked its usual flavor. My steak was very juicy, and tender and contained the right amount of seasoning. My only complaint of the steak was that it did have a little too much fat on it. Texas Corral is a family orientated steakhouse that offers a wide variety of food at affordable prices. Every Tuesday children may eat for ninety nine cents with a purchase of an adult entrée. Throughout the week they have daily specials which includes: 1/2 price margaritas, all you can eat fried shrimp, and 3.50$ long islands, or all you can eat every Monday are just a few of the specials. Texas Corral has a very friendly atmosphere and all the staff are very attentive to your needs and have always made me feel welcomed and at home. The employees also sing happy birthday to both children and adults on their birthdays and bring the birthday boy or girl a mini cake. Note: you must inform the staff that it is someone's birthday for them to do that. They also have slot machines were you can purchase lottery tickets for a price of 25 cents, 50 cents, and a dollar. I always feel like those lottery tickets are a waste of money, but I felt lucky and decided to go with my intuition and get a ticket for a dollar and surprisingly I won 50$ off of it. I personally recommend anyone who has a love for steak to come and dine at Texas Corral. I promise you that you will not be disappointed. read more

I loved this place when it first opened. I used to go here and order a meal with a side salad because the side salads were huge and had eggs, bacon pieces, tons of veggies, cheese and dressing. A total meal in itself I always took my entree home for later. The food was decent and the portions enough to share a meal and still feel food. Now the salads are dinky chunks of watery ice berg with a paper thing onion slice and tomato wedge and while the entrees are still huge the quality of the food has really gone down. Also the staff has really gone down as well, most don't care about their jobs or customers and i guess don't care if they get decent tips either. read more

Hello Texas coral I have been in this location several times and I have noticed business has slowed and the has gotten worse. The last two times have been horrible. On the 01/20/2015 was the worst. I had brought my fiancee in so she could have a nice steak dinner for her 39 birthday . We got seated in a great time but no one was in there . Ok well the music coming from the kitchen was so loud I could hear it in the bar . Mexican music. I couldn't hear the music in the bar. We ordered our food she ordered a med.well steak with onions and mushrooms. We get our food and her steak was not even close to med. Well it was very well onions and mushrooms were not even done they were crunchy . It was terrible. The waiter come over and asked if everything was ok . We sent it back and they cooked another one and now this one was so not done the dam thing starting walking off the plate! So we paid our bill and tried to leave that horrible steak behind but the waiter chased us done. Well it was so bad the dog won't eat it. Well we will never come back to this location again and if asked by friends my opinion I will tell them no don't waste your money . I'm happy to give a rundown of some of the best things to order at Texas Corral. Corral Chicken is by far my favorite. The calimari is tender yet not chewy. The Louisiana shrimp are flavorful and delicious. The chicken and dumpling soup served daily is as good as my grandmother's. The ranch, Texas Ranch, 1000 Island, and bleu cheese dressing are all homemade. If you're over 21 the Blue Texas Sky and the frozen peach margaritas are a must. Everyday features a different drink special. $3 margaritas on Tuesday's are great, and $2 craft beers on Wednesday's allow you to try new beers without breaking the bank. What impresses me most is Texas Corral's dedication to being a true community restaurant. They offer free meals to veterans on Veterans Day. They've worked with a number of non-profits through events and fundraising efforts. Portage is a better place because of their presence. read more

First of all there sign is broken and just reads "oral" and I don't need to make a joke about that because they are just insulting themselves every day with a broken sigh. My steak tasted like gristle and I don't know if my dog would have enjoyed it.
