One Star Review I waited over a month and a half to see Dr. Nilesh A. Patel for a consultation regarding possible revision surgery after a severe hernia and prior bariatric procedure. Before the visit, I was required to complete extensive bloodwork, upper GI imaging, and submit all prior surgical records -- which I did -- all while being unable to eat, vomiting, and unable to swallow pills. The day before my Austin appointment, I was told Dr. Patel would not be there and I would only see a PA. After already waiting so long, I drove over 2.5 hours to San Antonio to see the surgeon. After long wait times, Dr. Patel spent only a few minutes with me, did not review or discuss any of my required imaging or test results, did not ask about my symptoms, and offered no meaningful evaluation. I was told to take better vitamins despite explaining I cannot swallow pills. I left feeling dismissed, unheard, and frustrated after paying $250 for a very brief, non-compassionate visit. I will be seeking care elsewhere and would strongly recommend looking for another surgeon if you are seeking revision surgery or complex care. read more

I had full gastric bypass surgery performed about a year ago. The surgery itself was successful. I've lost about a hundred pounds, and once I was recovered the lifestyle changes were very manageable. If I could go back and do it again however, I would absolutely choose a different provider for my surgery. I have some nitpicks about my experience before the surgery, like the nickel and diming for products and services not covered by insurance, but the real problems began after surgery. I had never had a major surgery like this before, and I had some pretty severe side effects. For days after I was having delusions and hallucinations, and for weeks after that I was filled with crushing despair unlike anything my depression had ever made me feel before. Much much later I figured out I was probably suffering from post-anaesthetic psychosis, which was confirmed when I later had another unrelated surgery. But while it was happening I desperately tried to reach out to the office for help, and never heard back. The second major issue was when I discovered that TBS had lied about the hospital being in network. It turns out it wasn't, and I was on the hook for over $10k. Again I contacted them for assistance or guidance, again they never got back to me. The straw that broke the camel's back was when they did eventually contact me for a routine followup appointment, and refused to stop calling me "sir" despite me repeatedly asking. At that point I had enough and told them to not contact me again. This finally seemed to get their attention and they begged me to come back for a followup, but I was completely done, and decided I'd go to my primary for any future issues that cropped up. Bariatric surgery vastly improved my quality of life, and I would strongly urge anybody that's considering it to find a better provider than what I got. There's a lot more to a good major surgical experience than a surgeon being good with a knife. read more

I recently had the pleasure to go to the austin location. Even though I made it to my appointment a few minutes early, imagine my surprise that it took almost 2 hours to be called back to see the actual doctor. The waiting room was horrible, and extremely small with crappy seating. When I finally got called back, he spent maybe 5 minutes with me before sending me to the nutritionist. For a well established physician you would think there would be state of the art. Not in this case. The whole setup was sketchy. After my experience with Dr. Patel, I got the impression that he could do surgeries in his sleep and still get it perfect. He deals with a lot of patients every day but he still takes the time to make sure all your questions are answered before and after surgery. He doesn't take chances on his patients. If he's concerned at all about any lab result that could pose a potential risk during surgery, he requires that the issue be looked at and cleared up before proceeding with the surgery. Can't review the services of Dr. Patel or his practice (North San Antonio location). Showed up 15 minutes before my scheduled appointment time and waited 1 1/2 hours after my scheduled appointment time, but was never seen. I informed the front desk that I was leaving due to having waited 90 minutes and they didn't offer to see me immediately or very soon, but rather just said sorry and let me leave. Very disappointing. Note to Dr. Patel and staff...no matter how good your services and care may be, it won't matter if your operation is so ineffecient or the daily patient schedule is so overbooked that patients aren't seen within 90 minutes of their scheduled appointment times. I run a national medical group and if my patients weren't seen within 90 minutes of their scheduled appointment time, with the exception of an emergency which pulled the doctor away (which I was not informed of in this case), I would find such a situation unacceptable and would make adjustments to remedy the situation and provide better customer service. Of course, if customer service is a secondary priority to profitability, which is understandable and a matter of choice, then having patients wait such exceedingly long times would simply be a peripheral issue not requiring operational changes, but rather individual attention as/if necessary based on patient complaints or continuing patient follow-up metrics. I have seen positive reviews of Dr. Patel, so I am sure he is a fine physician, but on this day, with this patient...not impressed at all. I respect my doctor's time by showing up early and being ready to be seen at the scheduled appointment time, but my time is also valuable and deserves a reasonable degree of respect. Now, not only was my day wasted, but I must also go through the effort to find another physician for my post surgery follow-up care as I have no desire to wait 90 minutes after my scheduled appointment time each time I visit Dr. Patel's office. read more

I love the results my surgery has provided, but I am one of the Austin clients, and I have not been happy with the availability of the staff in the Austin office. They do not post their office hours for our reference, in case we want to go pick up product or just have general questions. In addition, they do not provide any surgical services in Austin. I had to get my gall bladder removed after my surgery, but they wouldn't do it unless I drove to San Antonio. I ended up going through my GP and having the surgery done in Austin. I was in and out in four hours at my local hospital, and didn't have to drive all the way to SA to get it done. I just think it's a little unreasonable to offer services to Austin clients but not provide hospital services in our city. read more

I Am writing this review for anyone who is on the fence about getting Bariatric surgery and may be afraid of moving forward with the process. I want you all to know so was I, at the time of my decision I was 61 years old and overweight, on all kinds of medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleeping problems you name it, I had let myself go, so I took the first step and went to one of the seminars to educate myself on the different types of weight loss surgeries that were available. The seminar was long I have to tell you, but anything that involves your health and life changing surgery needs to be, so you are prepared and completely educated on what is to come. For me it was the best decision I have ever made to get myself in a better place, to get my life back, to get healthy again. Once I made my decision on what procedure was right for me it was my turn to do what I needed to do to prepare myself, what they call getting pre surgery healthy, Dr. Reddy and the staff were all in my corner rooting me on to lose the weight I needed to for my surgery. I can't tell you how I feel about these people except; they are amazing. My weight came off and after all my blood work was done and at safe levels. I was scheduled for surgery. The surgery went off without a hitch, it was fast and precise and before I new it I was in recovery. Not only was my Gastric Sleeve done but Dr. Patel and Dr.Reddy repairied two (2) heria's. I stayed the night in the hospital, the next day Dr. Reddy checked in on me and I was up and moving, walking up and down the hallway of the hospital. Within a few hours with all my vitals looking good Dr. Reddy and the hospital staff said, Kay you can go home. I was shocked to think how quick my stay was, but I still needed to recover at home. My husband was awesome helping me with after surgery care, getting me up and moving, cleaning the area where I had the incisions from the laser, and Oh by the way the incisions are so small, you hardly see them. It took me about a week and I was almost back to normal, but not really, I was better. Last Saturday I had my final 3 month visit with Dr. Reddy, I have lost 70 pounds and I am off or using a very low dose of my medications. I can do a brisk walk and getting ready to try to do some light running but at a slower rate than I used to in my 20's of course. I'm 62 and feeling so good my husband and children are so amazed at my appearance too going from a size 22 to a size 10 doesn't hurt either. I highly recommend Dr. Patel, Dr. Reddy and my new family at Bariatric Specialists they changed my life for the better and I know they can help you too, you just have to jump the fence and do it. Patel nearly killed my sister-in-law. He performed gastric bypass on her and when she began to feel sick, he passed her off to his, PA, James, who simply kept insisting that she was not sick. He failed to return her phone calls. She began to run a fever and was in severe pain. Her stomach swelled and she could not eat or drink. She called repeatedly for help - at one point James actually asked her to TEXT A PICTURE OF HER STOMACH to him. His judgement upon viewing it was that she was fine. They refused to make an appointment for her. She began to go to the emergency room because of her pain, and then her primary care doctor for follow up. She was really scared. We all were. Her primary care doctor called Patel's office to make an appointment for her. She was assured that Patel would be there is she drove to San Antonio to see him. She made the drive, but after waiting more than an hour past her appointment time, was told he was in Austin that day (where she drove from). She saw James, who again assured her that she was fine. She was admitted to Scott & White Hospital in Temple a few days later for emergency surgery. She had a raging infection in her intestine and could have died. DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN THE CARE OF THESE AWFUL PEOPLE. They are in it for the money and nothing else. You are, at best, a number to them - at worst, an inconvenience. read more

Go somewhere else! All his office cares about is about the money. The office is a rented space they use to get the cattle through, the office attendants very useless, and they just want to push their products to you. Yet to even meet the Dr. Patel and been a week out of surgery. Took the psychological evaluation twice because the first time it didn't show I was ready for the surgery so was told to take it again, both times paying a co payment, but the second time make sure to "understand the question before answering..." basically telling me put what they want to hear. After that was told I was good to go and pay the co payment for surgery and set a date. Set the date went to the hospital got the surgery in a run down hospital, the Nurses where the only good thing they were very helpful and attentive. Next appointment after post op will be 6 WEEKS OUT! Very disappointment in myself for even letting myself choose this doctor office for my surgery, the writing was on the wall and was blinded by my means to the end and now I'm stuck with a doctors office who cares little if not at all. read more

wait time is horrible. you can always expect to wait at least an hour and a half. the doctor does not do satisfactory work. too bad he's the only choice available for my situation. otherwise i'd go elsewhere!!! ugh. i'd rather get a punch to the head than to sit here in the waiting room with 20 others crammed in the same small room waiting forever.......the doctor is not that good. not worth the trouble. he rushes you out the door because he's so greedy and crams in about 100 people in a tiny wait room. he just wants to make as much money as possible, not really caring about anybody's well being but his own. the staff is worthless and rude. they push overly expensive products on you to supplement your diet with. these products are costly and taste disgusting. completely inedible. even though the product is supposed to be 100% satisfaction guaranteed, it is not! dont try to return the nasty tasting garbage vitamins that cost $40 and taste just like vomit soda because they will abruptly tell you, "oh sorry!!! you opened it. we dont take it back". well, so much for the 100% satisfaction guaranteed b.s. read more
