Cat, the awesome midwife who brought our babe earthside.
    Nicole B.

I was waiting to write this review until my baby was born, even though the prenatal care I got warranted a 5 star review as well! I transferred care from the Austin Area Birthing Center at around 26 weeks because the care I was receiving there felt impersonal (and for other reasons I'll not disclose here.) And it was the best medical decision I've ever made in my life. I wanted to go somewhere that was both evidence based as well as crunchy and these amazing midwives were just that. They supported all my decisions without judgement and I never felt pressured to do anything I was uncomfortable with (except maybe the iron supplements that they strongly advised and I definitely needed haha). Why I thought was super incredible during the prenatal care process was how they remembered little details I had mentioned in passing about my life and previous birth experiences. When going to AABC I found myself repeating not only these details but my medical history and medications I was on. I felt like my Home Birth Honey midwives listened to me and understood intuitively what I would need day of. Speaking of the day of! Cat delivered my baby, along with the support of their two midwifery students Brittany and Andrea. Literally the dream team! I know whole heartedly I would have felt the exact same way if Leonora or Meg had delivered as well because all 3 of them made me feel soooo supported in the days leading up to giving birth (including directions of what to do to feel better with the flu while 39 weeks pregnant! - thanks Meg!) Between Meg, Andrea, and Brittany, I never once had to think about anything while giving birth in the safety of their hands. They told me when to go to the bathroom, when to drink water, when to get into the tub, when to start pushing. I think the closest I came to thinking about anything was when I was in the tub and began the thought of "a cool wash cloth would be so..." and then before the thought even finished Brittany (? I think it was Brittany, but I was blissed out with my eyes closed) HAD A COOL WASHCLOTH ON MY FOREHEAD. Midwives, yes. Mind readers? Most likely. Since this was my 3rd baby, I remember my other two labors and was convinced I was still in early labor when Cat suggested she check how far along I was dilated. When she said "okay, you're ready to start pushing on your next contraction" I was SHOCKED. She coached me and gave me visuals to safely push the baby out with minimal tearing. I cannot emphasize enough how SAFE I felt the whole time. They were so calm the whole time that I just absorbed it all from them. Oh and did I mention I got to have both my other kids with me during the experience?? My big kids (and sister and dog ) got to watch my baby being born, something they both still talk about! Also, the postpartum care both me and my baby received was insanely thorough. Keeping in mind, this was my third baby so I have a lot to compare to. They evaluated us both for everything, went over postpartum advice, and helped me through some normal issues that came up in the 6 weeks afterward. Was my birthing experience a transcendent spiritual journey? No. But was it better than I could have ever hoped for? Immeasurably so. I think each of my births was unique and special, but this one was my favorite... So sad my postpartum journey is ending with them, but I will never stop being grateful for the gift of my birth experience and healthy, calm baby with them.

There are not enough words to express how blessed I was by Meg and Leo (as well as their assistant and student, Brittany and Anya). I hired them during a critical time. Not just because of COVID, but at 36 weeks pregnant, I found myself needing to be transferred to a new provider. My doulas worked with Meg & Leo and suggested I would click well with them. I'll never forget that Sunday afternoon, my heart was pounding and my mind was racing as I shakily wrote an email asking if they could take me on. Within hours, I got an email back and we met over Zoom the next day. (From the get go, I was impressed with how communicative and efficient they were!) My husband and I had a consult with them and I immediately felt at ease. They listened to my concerns from my previous provider, responded respectfully, asked great questions and by the end of the call, the four of us felt like we were a good fit. These women are a dynamic duo! Even though we only had a few prenatal appointments together, I never felt disregarded or my questions weren't valid. But if I needed some grounding and reality checks, they didn't shy away from telling me. They made sure to get caught up to speed as quickly as possible. I ended up going 12 days past my EDD so they really came in clutch when I'd frantically text them or feel like I was losing my mind. They always responded promptly, gave great tips and never let me feel like a nag. The birth itself was calm. I actually don't remember Meg and Brittany interfering for majority of the birth (which I believe is ideal LOL). They trusted my body do its thing but I always knew they were close by if I needed anything. When it came to the final pushes, I had a moment of feeling like I wouldn't make it. Meg immediately refuted my doubt and said the most convincing, "YES YOU CAN." like only Meg can. Two seconds later, my baby girl was in my arms. I've attributed my beautiful birth to Home Birth Honey so many times, a friend of mine ended up transferring to them, too! You cannot go wrong with these powerhouse midwives. No doubt we will be meeting again for Baby #2!

My birth experience with HBH was incredibly special. The prenatal care was warm, nurturing and I felt safe and cared for. I experienced some illnesses during my pregnancy and they were able to guide me through how to care for myself and my baby. It was truly whole person, whole body care. Cat helped guide me during my labor and in transition and helped me release and open to birth my baby. This type of spiritual and supportive guidance and nurturing during labor is tremendously helpful. Post partum I experienced some emotional trauma/blues and they were by my side, literally, caring for me and my family. Birth is transformative and powerful and having the right birth workers by your side is important to the entire experience. The entire birth team is warm, funny, smart and extremely experienced. They are all incredible north workers!

I have been blessed to have worked with and alongside Leonora in several different ways. She has become part of my family and I cannot say enough about the care, compassion, and expertise that she brings with her to each of the births she attends.    I first met Leonora in 2011 when she helped with postpartum care for my first child. Then again in 2014 she was the midwife for the birth of my second. We all worked so well together, it was as if we had done that labor dance a thousand times as a team. When I carried as a surrogate for friends in 2018, I asked her to be please please please be my doula as I needed her there. Leo brings an invaluable energy with her everywhere she goes. It turned out to be my most challenging labor and absolutely the outcome was as great as it was because she was there by my side. She reminded me of my own power and of choices I knew I wanted to make. I am also a doula in the greater Austin area and have worked alongside Leonora helping moms actualize their dream birth experiences. She really knows her stuff! I've seen her know when to just keep a watchful eye as moms powerfully move through labor to meet their babies and also flawlessly step in when more support was needed.  I have also witnessed times when births needed to transfer to a hospital for a change in care plans and Leo compassionately explained every step of the process as she made wise medical recommendations for her clients.  I cannot say enough good things about her, I have so much love and respect for Leo and I highly recommend her as a midwife and in general as a human being.

We registered for an all day Childbirth class complete with a Seton hospital tour-- it was a wonderfully informative day that left us feeling confident and prepared for what to expect on "Labor Day". Jillian Silva, our childbirth instructor, was communicative via email and text in the days leading up to the class and welcomed us at the door upon arrival. The class presentation was delivered through PowerPoint slides, lectures, videos and hands-on demonstrations and practice. Jillian was very knowledgeable on all points discussed during the class, and had tangible hospital items for us to view and touch for further understanding and familiarity. We covered topics such as: what to pack in your hospital and baby bag, stages of labor, relaxation techniques, responsibilities of partner, options for labor pain relief (degrees of natural and non-natural options), labor aids/tools that the hospital provides and more! Jillian, who is also a certified Doula, has such a calming and confident nature. She was professional, timely, prepared and very friendly; she even made brownies for the class! Anyone who chooses to have her presence and expertise during their labor and delivery is one lucky mama. The class was from 9am-4pm with a 30 min lunch and the hospital tour from 3-4pm. The long day was totally worth it! I walked away from the class feeling equipped to do what my body knows how to do naturally, and if and when I need support, I now know who to contact. Thanks Jillian for being a great instructor!

Brandi and Jillian are both amazing. Like another yelper wrote, "where to even begin?"…read more We engaged with Austin Childbirth for birth doula services. They come highly recommended, from my wife's OBGYN as well as some of the Seton Hospital staff and Shelley, also of Seton, who taught our "ABC's of Childbirth" class (recommended). I was skeptical at first. Being a traditionalist... and fearing the costs for, well everything as I stand on the edge of the financial abyss of having my first child. My wife wanted to go "all natural" for her birth which means NO PAIN MEDS. #scary At first we were considering birthing centers but that was a bit "too natural" for me. We compromised on getting a doula and having a hospital birth. The biggest benefit to me going in was that a lot of the pressure of what goes on during "go time" wouldn't be on my shoulders alone. In a large way, the doula was joining "team dad" to support mom. Having a professional who knows massages, counter-pressure exercises and other techniques to alleviate pain naturally is NOTHING SHORT OF MAGIC. Even small things like reassuring my wife that "this will pass" and coaching breathing techniques SEEMS like a small thing but when the rubber hits the road, you want that support; TRUST ME. Jillian and Brandi work as a team. From the beginning until after baby comes, Jillian and Brandi communicate via WhatsApp for any quick questions or concerns you may have. Brandi was personally present for our long session in the hospital. Brandi ... is ... AMAZING. So much so that I not only cried when hugging her as she was saying her "goodbyes" at the hospital but I also welled up a bit when she visited to check in on us after we brought baby home. (I just got a little emotional writing this.) ALTERNATIVE PAIN COPING TECHNIQUES: Brandi brought a calm positivity which is hard to explain. Early on she worked magic with massage and compression techniques, some of which she and I did together. She gave my wife coping techniques which brought her pain from an 8 down to a 3 WITHOUT MEDICINE. AGAIN: IT WAS LIKE MAGIC. The hospital staff looked on with admiration as she supported my wife, coaching her though contractions while doing lunges in the hallway at 8cm. ADVOCATE FOR MOM / FEWER INTERVENTIONS: Another thing that's important which can't be understated is that a doula is able to be an advocate for mom and her birth preferences. No slight meant for the medical staff here. The medical staff have their set of tools and protocols that they know and they will try to get you to accept them because that's their playbook. My wife was pretty adamant however about doing the fewest amount of medical interventions because each intervention makes you more statistically likely for more interventions as you careen down the rabbit hole to an unplanned c-section. A doula can help you stick with your birth preferences just by asking the right questions. Just having Brandi in the room was empowering because her goal isn't to get you in and out quick, but rather help you have the birth that you want. TENS FTW: Part of the package is that Austin Childbirth will loan you a TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit for pain during your last few weeks of pregnancy and then also for use in the labor / delivery room. It works by This also was something that cut down on my wife's pain considerably. The units they provide has a "surge" button which, when pressed, will go into higher strength mode for use during contractions. My wife swears by it. Brandi stayed with us through it all and then was even willing to keep us company as long as we wanted post-partum. Both Brandi and Jillian engaged with us after we were home just to check in and Brandi even came over to our house a week afterwards to check up on us and see how things were going / see if she could help out. While we aren't planning on having another, if we do, I can't imagine not calling up Brandi and Jillian to join us on our journey.

Unfortunately, we could not obtain maximum benefit of support groups and attend all classes due to pregnancy related illness. We did, however, feel a huge value of using Austin Born, was in the communication and correspondence with our Doula, Kim Borchert. She answered many emails, texts and calls in a very open-minded and timely manner. We were referred to amazing pregnancy specialists such as chiropractors, twin trainers and also given pain relieving techniques which greatly reduce the discomfort and frustration of carrying twins. As new parents of twins with no family nearby, our postpartum Doula service was important. Austin Born was holistic in every sense and we felt that we had not only one awesome doula checking in and supporting us in our home each day but also had a team of doulas with vast experience behind the scenes. For the first time in my life I was responsible for a needy, helpless, endlessly adorable baby--my baby. Who had time for sleep? Once I got into bed I was so amped up on adrenaline I couldn't shut down. My husband had to hold me tight to turn off the humming in my mind and body. Being new to Austin meant we didn't have a large network of people to ask for references, so I researched online, read reviews and looked through credentials. I knew very quickly I wanted to work with Christy and Jenni. I had an extremely difficult pregnancy, although I was also sick the entirety of my first as well. I had hyperemesis gravidarum, meaning I was throwing up constantly, losing weight, and unable to keep down hardly anything. Christy has a huge wealth of knowledge and practices functional medicine alongside traditional options. I was always given information of references for alternative therapies to help my nausea. They were always helping me manage my sickness and we worked closely with a perinatal MD for any tests or services Christy couldn't provide herself. We interviewed a few other people around town, but instantly clicked with Jenni and Christy. They are warm, responsive, realistic and the best part - they really care about you, your pregnancy and your experience. Our meetings were sometimes long - filled with laughter in addition to medical explanations of my changing body. They took a few minutes each time to do the medical stuff, blood pressure/pee test/feel for baby...but then, the rest of the time they just wanted to know how I was feeling. I miss them. When my birth came around, Jenni was my rock. She is kind and gentle - her presence during the chaos of birth was invaluable. She kept me calm, centered and most of all, feeling safe through 8 hours of active labor and a 3 hours of pushing. My kiddo didn't want to come out, but they literally pulled out a bag of tricks: peanut yoga balls, weird positions, ropes to pull on and things to rest my legs on. They kept my spirits up, even when in those moments of wanting to give up. And, with their help I birthed a healthy little girl in the comfort of my home. It was amazing. Women are amazing. Now I'm crying. I can't recommend these MotherBloom midwifery enough. I am beyond grateful for her presence during my labor and baby's birth, as well as her postpartum help as I navigated things when my husband went back to work. A huge thank you to Rachael and the whole team at Austin Doula Care, I couldn't recommend their support more.

Kathryn must really not care about her career in this field anymore. I registered for her…read morehypnobirthing class online on April 23rd at 8pm. I paid $100 deposit via PayPal for a class that was scheduled to be held at 630 pm at Austin Born the following Tuesday (April 26th). She didn't show up. There was another couple standing there with us, completely shocked that the instructor wasn't returning our calls or emails. I've left 2 voicemails, several emails and created a dispute for the charge on my PayPal account. NO RESPONSE. I called Austin Born and talked with the owner. Apparently Kathryn called her that Friday to say she wasn't going to teach the class and would be refunding people's money. She still took my money, took my time and has yet to give me just a little bit of human respect by returning my attempts to communicate. Do not go to this person, she doesn't care about pregnant mothers trying to take advanced prenatal classes. She will take your money and good luck trying to get it back. Disgusting.

I wish I had read the other reviews before signing up for this course. On August 7 I signed up for…read morethis course because I'm planning a no medical interventions birth (first time mom), and Austin Hypnobirthing was on a list of recommended courses at my midwife's office, OBGyn North. I signed up online and paid the $100 to reserve my spot in the course that begins today 9/11/2016. Just a few days ago, on Sep. 7, I got an email from PayPal saying that Katherine manually returned my payment for $100 - with no other explanation. I left her a voicemail and emails inquiring whether the course had been cancelled and received zero response from her. Now in my third trimester, I'm scrambling to find another hypnobirthing course that starts soon so I can complete it before I go into labor. It's pretty shocking how this fell through and with no basic decency to at least send an email if the course was cancelled or overbooked. I went a month thinking I was all set. Reading the other reviews, I suppose it could have been worse - I don't have to fight to get my money back at least. Still I am so disappointed by this, and will be telling OBGyn North about my experience. They should not be recommending this course to their clients because this business is unreliable.
