Today was my first experience at this VA Clinic for my service-connected disabilities, as I usually visit the Cedar Park VA Clinic. This clinic is a stand-alone multispecialty facility offering a wide range of services, including primary care, chiropractic care, optometry (vision care), dentistry, oncology, podiatry (foot care), and treatment for traumatic brain injuries (TBI), among others. Compared to my previous clinic, this facility is much more advanced, as many veterans have noted. It's modernized, and I didn't notice many veterans waiting to be seen, which hopefully reflects a reduction in the backlog we know has affected the VA for some time. If you're new to this clinic or the VA system in general, there's an area in the center of the building for registration when you enter. It's also a good idea to create an account through the VA website or mobile app, available for both Apple and Android devices. The VA's mobile app is quite useful, providing a wealth of information on your service, benefits, letters, and, most importantly, details about your appointments and prescriptions. One thing the VA could improve on is giving clearer directions for appointments, as it can be overwhelming for someone new to the system. That said, the staff here have been helpful and informative overall, with plenty of people available to guide you through the process. While some employees may have the attitude issues that others have mentioned, I generally don't let it affect my experience unless it impacts my care. Speaking of care, my experience was a bit mixed. The nurse who took my vitals left the exam room door open, which didn't bother me at first, but I found it odd that the door remained open even after she left. Thankfully, another nurse noticed and kindly closed the door, which I appreciated. Went in for an ultrasound on my kidneys. I've often hated going to the VA. Their long lines, rude interactions, overcrowded, etc. but since moving to Texas I've had some pleasant experiences. Arrived at the clinic and checked in. Within fifteen minutes I was seen, and I was in and out. And, surprisingly, I received my results within two hours after my appointment! The facility was open, clean and smelled of popcorn thanks to the vendor giving away free popcorn. They had s as nice café there were you could purchase s light lunch. Getting an appointment in the quarter you need one in is next to impossible. Twice now I've sat in the waiting area for HOURS only to be told the doctor (different docs) had left for the day and I needed to reschedule! THEN, they marked me down as a no show! They have a good facade going- new facility filled with caring experts dedicated to helping veterans cope with the plethora of issues we have from serving our country, but they are first and foremost a government bureaucracy. Just the other day I made an online request to see my pain specialist- I suffered a spinal injury in combat, only to receive a notice that they cancelled my request! This was after an award winning treatment where I lay flat on my stomach with six needles in my spine. The doc attached electrodes to the needles and then flipped on the machine WITHOUT CHECKING THE SETTINGS. I guess the default for that apparatus was "f**k you" because my 6'3" 250lb body bounced a foot off the table (spine full of needles) as I screamed bloody murder and they frantically tried to shut the mad science experiment down... The ONLY reason I dont give them one star is because at least I dont have to pay for the emotional abuse they peddle as veteran's healthcare. I think it's time to write my congressman... read more

I saw the low reviews for the VA clinic but my experience has been great. I filed an eligibility form and sent it in the mail. I received several calls requesting more information and once I supplied the additional paperwork I got a Caaba telling me to come in for my health card identification card. I came in waited 15 minutes I was in the system and it was efficient. Next I went to the veterans commission on site and made an appointment for a claim. I came in today too do all paperwork and it took Lloyd than 30 to file. Everyone here has been friendly and professional. I recently came to this VA clinic to get some labs done, get established with a PCP in my area, and get a new ID card. For the most part things went smooth but also reminded me of being back in the military. Think an like an HMO with having to get a referall for everything. Anyway, I haven't used the VA facilities since 2004 when I lived in MI. Anyway, I was able to schedule and get an appointment with a PCP provider in less than two weeks. We will see how that appointment goes. Overall the facility was nice and offered a lot of additional therapeutic and diagnostic services. Plenty of parking and a food cafeteria onsite. read more

This is a review based om the Austin VA Clinic alone. We have been utilizing the e Clinic area for some time now, updating information and preparing for the future. There is a boat-load of things to do, but so far I have been quite impressed. There, on file are all of the active duty records and we have been adding records that have developed after retirement. This is hard. The clinic does not make it hard as we had been preparing all through our careers and also retaining a paper copy of any document we could lay our hands upon "just in case". On our first trip there, we went in on a busy day, but were still out in 3 hours. Labs were extremely concerned with precise information and the first medical visit was in two weeks. All visits with appointments were spot on time and they were extremely concerned with details. Follow up appointments were easily secured and we were easily able to set reoccurring appointments. They have many fairs for vets to provide information and recommendations. Even when you have to go to an area for an appointment or information, the wait is not that long. It is based on the day when people show up. If it is a lot, the wait is longer. I anticipate it will be several months before our things are up to date, but that is not their fault, but ours as we have had lots of doctors and hospitals involved that are not military, so we have to get summaries and documents into the files. The people we have dealt with have been extremely knowledgeable and helpful in providing advice. They are very understaffed, but it is amazing what they can do. They have many volunteers who help pick up the non-official slack to help free up the main folks. There is plenty of parking, the place is beautiful and spotless. There are actually about 4 or 5 places that share the areas so it is easier to communicate. I will notify headquarters of the updates. The best part is meeting people who were where you were and swapping stories. These are true heroes. I salute you and greatly respect your performance of national service. read more

For the last 15 years, the VA has been 5 star. Recently, because of COVID, the place has been a giant clusterf**k. I had an after-hours issue in February, so I went to a hospital to get treated really quick. Then, I schedule a follow up appointment with the VA to get some tests done. They schedule me for an appointment 6 weeks later. By this time, the issue would have been over for 5 weeks. Week 6 rolls around. The day before my appointment they call me and tell me they've rescheduled me for another 6 weeks out. Whatever, I don't care. I'm not dying, I can wait. Round 2 5th week rolls around, and they call me to reschedule for another 8 weeks out "due to COVID-19". I tell them to just cancel my appointment altogether, they're obviously not capable of delivering care during this time. Ended up paying out of pocket for all my tests and had everything done within 48 hours. VA reimbursed me in full for the private doctor and tests, so that was good I guess. read more

I guess it's hard to rate a place such as this positively when the entire system is a little screwed up and people get shafted for many a reason. My experience here at this center has been pretty positive overall. This facility offers many different medical needs for vets under one roof so that's a plus for those traveling out of town needing to take care of multiple appointments such as eye, dental, chiropractic, or mental health. You can also get your VA card here if you don't already have one. They have a little cafe that during breakfast actually serves some good biscuits and gravy a la diner style. They are extremely tasty after you have been fasting all night for blood work! ;) Speaking of. If you have blood work scheduled for Monday, just wait till Tuesday. You can thank me later. Also, if you need to be seen ASAP as a walk-in wait till after 2 or 3pm. You will be seen with those that have been waiting since 7am anyway. I know by experience. I'm a 100% disabled vet and I know for a fact that because of that, I have a lot less issues getting my needs attended to. Many of my other fellow veterans might get the runaround because the system is geared to question the ailments of lesser rated veterans. It's a shame. On the plus side, almost everyone I've dealt with here is nice if you are nice back to them. Hey, go figure. That actually works here just like anywhere else in the world! ;) I'm rating this clinic and it's services as a whole, not the VA administration. Very nice facility. The staff seemed very nice but you do need to exercise patience as some of the services sections do get crowded. I enrolled today and it was an easy but confusing process as they do not give you much information so I'll have to wait and see what happens over the next few days and or weeks. They were not issuing ID cards today as the system was down so I don't know when I'll get to receive mine. I'm hoping to leave this review at five stars but we will see what the future holds. read more

I went in today and almost had a disastrous waste of time due to a combination of incompetence and malfeasance. I went in for an MRI with the hopes of obtaining the images to take to an outside provider. The VA changed policies on uploading MRI images to myhealthyvet, which makes it impossible for veterans to get ahold of their records in a timely manner. The above is extremely problematic when dealing with outside providers because you are caught between two organizations where people want to do the least amount of work possible. I wanted to make sure I had access to my images in time for an upcoming appointment and was told that the VA refuses to electronically send me my own records even through their secure messaging network. Someone somewhere thinks it's more efficient to burn a CD, which most new computers don't have equipment to read, and send that to you in the mail. The whole process can take a month, making continuity of care impossible when dealing with a doctor who doesn't have object permanence and pretends you don't exist when you aren't in the room with them. I was amazed at how the woman I spoke to at release of information instructed me on what to tell my outside provider to do when I can't get the VA to follow simple instructions. Thankfully, I spoke with a patient advocate named Jill Stokes, who went above and beyond to solve an issue I've been dealing with for three months. There has been zero communication between the VA and the clinics they outsource to, and there is no communication between different parties within the VA as well. Jill was the first person I encountered with the resources to help me who actually wanted to. My alleged healthcare team, the support desk at myhealthyvet, and the Central Texas Hotline are happy to make you wait on the phone for an hour only to do nothing of consequence with your request. The VA needs more people like Jill in every public-facing position, someone who cares about the veterans and their needs and does not try to protect the interests of an organization that acts against their publicly stated mission. This facility was by far one of the most needed things in the Austin area for its Veterans. The building that we used to have to go to smelled like pee and was so tiny and cramped that you'd just cringe thinking about having to go for an appointment. The new facility is located on Metropolis (not Montopolis like the old location) off of 183 and sits near the Austin Bergstrom Airport. This place is how a VA clinic should be. It's clean, friendly staff, and new equipment. And yes, there's a little cafe to order food at in between appointments and there's also a gift shop next to the pharmacy. It's easy to navigate compared to other places like the Temple VA hospital (dear God!). I go here weekly to the mental health clinic for group meetings for PTSD. This place offers so many different things to help with the problems Veterans face daily. I've only been here for a few other appointments, like a neurology follow up, and a prescription pick-up but all was in smooth running every time I've come. To check in for an appointment, they now have electronic kiosks where you scan your ID card and this is also how you get paid for travel. They're still working the kinks out on the travel but it's getting better. I really don't mind coming here because the atmosphere is inviting compared to the other facilities Austin used to have (including the Southgate bldg. off of I-35). read more

The Austin VA Dental Clinic is by far the worst health office of any kind that I have dealt with in my entire 51 years! Ishtar of completing my 4 dental implants, they yank yet another tooth, causing two other teeth to separate and expose the nerve. No appointment available for over a month. Three phone calls with ZERO return calls from the doctors. So I walked in with SEVERE pain and migraines caused by it. Sat for over 4 hours!!! Then re explained the problem AGAIN. STILL NO HELP!!! So here is sir with a 14 out of 10 on the pain scaled waiting in the reception area while they see all of the regular appointments instead of the dental emergency. This is unbelievable. There's more horrific things in this story where they dropped the ball, but I'm too angry and hurting to go over it all. You're better off borrowing the money from the mob and paying for civilian treatment. This is all coming from someone who never ever posts anything negative on the net. Dr. C decided that staff at Bay Pines, FL, Hot Springs, S.D., and White City VA were incompetent. That was my diagnosis, also, doctor. He was nice enough to warn me that I would be discriminated against at an lgbtq living facility for being a non binary asexual. He told me that all veterans had their property stolen at 7211 northeast dr. Social worker offered me to live in a shed. She called it a 'tiny house'. Even Texas discriminates against Native American church members. I am disabled and unable to provide paperwork to be officially recognized as a peyote/cannabis/ ayahuasca/ psilycybin NAC church member. This facility was almost the opposite of above mentioned failures. Most staffers know the golden rule. My 'behaviour flag' was initiated by incompetent staff after I reported being sexually assaulted at W.C. VA in 2016 by a named chaplain, reported to a female va police officer who declined to give me her name. read more

I took my dad here for hearing aids. We showed up 30 minutes early and got in early. The Dr. was very kind and professional. We have to wait 2 months for hearing aids, but he has needed them for years. The facility is clean and the staff pleasant. I grew up going to military hospitals so waiting is no big deal. I myself pay an ungodly amount for medical care so I am grateful my father ( CWO 4 retired) is entitled to this benefit. read more

This place is horrible with appointments and communication. I had a pain management consult put in in March which that department canceled because I did not have a recent MRI. No one bothered to tell me the status of the appointment despite my multiple emails and phone calls. Thanks for nothing, I'm so glad this wasn't an important postoperative appointment! Today, a nurse names Joel told me he "took the liberty of scheduling" me an appointment when I didn't ask for one, no one consulted with me on date or time, and after I've explained many, many times that I move to CA in a week. He then proceeded to tell me that the doctor said he didn't want to see me today because "if the pain was that bad, you would've been here sooner". I checked in as a walk-in today because I had a spinal fusion which causes significant spinal spasms, some of which knock the wind out of me and cause me to lose balance. Recently, I went face first into the ground, and since that day, the wound on my face has turned into a very firm, bone-like tumor that's getting larger and more painful. Honestly I would say it's about 4 stars (-1 because the cafeteria sells so much unhealthy stuff) Other than that I have only had very good experiences here. I've been using this CA center for about 2 years and I've never had an issue and everyone has been friendly, always. Even if they're not friendly I wouldn't blame them after having to deal with disgruntled vets who are looking for a reason to hate the VA. I have been very disappointed with the lack of care being provided at this facility. I called my primary care provider to see if they were accepting walk-ins. I was told yes, and to be there before 3. I left school early so I could make it in. After being at the facility for over two hours, getting vitals done, and meeting with the nurse, I was told that the doc would not see me and to come back at the next available appointment, which was in 5 days. Knowing that this was urgent I wound up spending money to go to the Rediclinic at HEB. I had the most amazing care and was treated with dignity and respect. On a previous visit, when I was leaving the VA clinic , I saw a veteran limping in the parking lot and asked if he was okay. He said he thought he broke his foot. I went and asked the police booth at the entrance if they could send the golf cart that transports people in need, to the front. When notified they didn't have that service option that day I asked if the officer could radio for another officer on duty to pick this man up. I was then told there wasn't anyone available. Realizing that they had no desire to help I walked out and saw a taxi waiting out front. Knocked on the window and asked him to be a Good Samaritan and pick up the gentleman and bring him to the front, and was happy to help. Once I got to my vehicle I saw a squad car patrolling the parking area who should have been radioed to help. I thought they are there to protect and SERVE. As much as I like the new VA facility there needs to be better care and treatment for us veterans. read more

I love the VA. I would rather be seen here than anywhere else. Why? Let me list the reasons: 1. It's mostly free to service connected disabled Vets. 2. It's located in an area of town with little traffic. 3. The facilities are BRAND new, unlike other VA's which are hanging on by 550 cord and duct tape. 4. The care providers do a good job. 5. The women's clinic has provided me with excellent service. 6. Everything is in house! No leaving to go to a pharmacy.. Or to schedule an X-ray that's weeks away. All in house! 7. All the war vets are so adorable in their campaign hats. 8. You get greeted on the way in and out, by everyone passing. 9. Free parking. Hello. It's Austin. That's a top rated thing here. 10. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Less than $2. Yes they are legendary. I was able to get approved for Voc Rehab here, and get a wonderful plan in place. As a combat veteran.. After the run around at the Cedar ;park Clinic that left me no alternative but to seek an appointment at a clinic further away from me, I called the Austin Clinic. And you'd think this story would have a happy ending but alas. No no it doesn't. The guy that answers tells me I can't make an appointment because I've never been there before. I have to be assigned a doctor, but to do that I have to come all the way down there so that I can be assigned a doctor. Can't I just do that over the phone, you may ask. So did I. I have only great things to say about the Austin VA Center, and in particular the Women's Clinic. If I could give 10 stars, I would. These ladies are so professional and the services they provide 'sets the bar' as far as I'm concerned. I'm a 21 year service (Air Force) Veteran, and my experience here matches or exceeds most within my Active Duty time span. Both Crystal/Krystal (sp?) and Dr. Wise-Boehnke have been my go-to nurse/ doctor team both before, during and after "COVID crisis" and neither one of them has missed a beat in the speciality care and concern for their patients that they provide! Three stars for the nice facilities, and the fact that you can kill several birds with one stone (your appointment, your travel pay, your pharmacy, having a bite for lunch) at one place. The canteen is nice and the prices are reasonable, also. Vast majority of staff is very friendly. Women's clinic is great, have no complaints about my Dr. as she's very caring. Didn't really care for the mental health section, even though it's been a while since I've seen anyone; maybe it has changed in the last year. The psychologists, LCSW's, and groups (I've been to several) just seemed really impersonal and left me feeling cold and worse/more agitated than when I walked in. Also, whenever I get a test done at the VA, it invariably is just "wrong" somehow; like I could get an X Ray here that says normal, but an outside Dr. will find arthritis. So I usually just try not to go there for care (that's why only three stars). read more

I haven't had many issues coming here. Yes I've been scolded for being late and yes I have been disciplined for missing an appointment or two. I even had an old Msgt attempt to dress me down only to find out that Even Number Chiefs don't role like that. Overall a decent place with decent service... I do have one problem... When I have an appointment why is there not a cross reference to better explain the appointment location? Example: Where the heck is RESDT2 is located or is the EKG done in medical specialties or procedures? read more

As a combat veteran with service connected disability , I've been semi-reliant on the VA for my aches and pains since getting done with my service back in 2010. What I like about this clinic is that it is big and organized and clean, and the staff is usually friendly. As any OIF / OEF Vet knows, you need to take the whole day off for your appointment. The VA doesn't move quickly and is overwhelmed by walk-ins. What I don't like is all the prior-service who come here looking for handouts and drugs, or just attention. Just like in the active-duty military, there are those individuals that weigh everyone down. So be patient with the staff as they do their best to help you out. read more

Well, I've been in Austin just over a year now and, unfortunately, this clinic continues to underwhelm (and my previous review still stands). For starters, you'd think that this clinic would have fixed it's ongoing phone issues? Nope. Phones still ring endlessly (with no option to leave a message), most often ring through to an answering service and/or Temple (after lengthy, automated holds), or if you do get through, whomever answers brings attitude, impatience, and an inability to help. Fortunately there are exceptions to these issues, but they are relatively few and far between. There's also a gross level of miscommunication or lacking communication within and across this clinic. I frequently have to call and/or send secure messages following appointments because specific medications, referrals, and/or appointment-based requests have been overlooked. During my most recent doctor's appt, all of my medication requests went unentered. Worse yet, I was also seen and referred within the clinic for a serious, anxiety-provoking issue, which I've yet to be contacted about over a week and a half later (the results were immediately available, just not to me). In situations like this, I often am forced to interact with patient advocates--often in Temple b/c the Austin rep(s?) are rarely available, and even these individuals frequently drop the ball. By way of example, in the last month I called an advocate to complain about the ridiculous rudeness/nastiness of Stacy at the physical medicine desk, as well as to request specific information she didn't provide. I was never contacted again--even after I followed up with another call to the same advocate. Who, exactly, are veterans to contact when the people we're supposed to call for help/assistance don't provide it?? The choice programs is also as much of a confusing mess as ever. Here again, I usually have to do most of the work to facilitate the process of receiving care from the relatively small group of participating providers. By way of example, I had a physical therapy (PT) referral that was not fulfilled in 2017, which was reactivated and finally assigned to a provider in 2018. The day before the appt, I received a message that the appt was cancelled and reassigned because the provider does not treat chronic pain syndrome. I called a choice rep and pointed out that the referral was not for said syndrome and I was told to contact the VA to correct the issue. I was also told that the PT office cancelled the appt. When I called a VA rep to attempt to rectify the issue, she didn't know how I could contact the referring doctor and stated she would return my call when she located him. She never called back. Ironically, the next call I received was the PT office confirming my appt. I recalled choice reps two more times to rectify the situation and inevitably it was rectified. All told I spent a couple of hours on the phone to fix a nonexistent issue. This is one example of MANY I could give. Fortunately, I'm inevitably able to receive most of the care that I need. Unfortunately, I most often have to bear the responsibility, accountability, and fastidiousness to get it because very few individuals at this clinic are attentive before or after--and often during--appts. I have to triple check everything, and most often also bear the burden of correcting any/all issues VA staff creates. These are things no veteran/patient should have to do. Yet, even with my numerous, service-connected physical and psychological issues/challenges, it's most often the cost of "care" at this clinic. At the same time, I realize that many staff members at this clinic are overwhelmed by the volume and challenges of the veterans who are seen there. I also realize that many of those veterans are far more overwhelmed--in often much more serious and irreparable ways--and it's obvious that fact escapes or is overlooked by most who work at this clinic. For one thing, this underscores the dysfunctional staffing and operation of this clinic. It also points to relatively poor training and preparation of staff members and areas of mismanagement. Regardless, no issue I could list excuses the ongoing, substandard behavior and care that many are exposed to (myself included) in this clinic. There certainly are some exceptions, but even with those more competent and caring individuals (thankfully) in mind, it's a challenge to rate this clinic at the lowest level available. sidenote: You gotta wonder about reviewers who think their experience invalidates anyone else's. Admittedly, I'm happy for (and jealous of) those who have generally/repetitively good experiences at this clinic, but that doesn't mean everyone shares the same experience (uh, DUH!). There's a huge world of experience beyond the nose of such reviewers, even if their limited, self-serving understanding--if not experience, empathy, and grasp of reality--disempowers them from seeing and/or comprehending it. read more

My experiences at this clinic have always been positive. Underscoring this, on my last visit, two days ago, as a walk-in, I received, prompt and thorough treatment for a groin injury I'd suffered the day before. This was probably the busiest day of the year, day after Memorial Day, and although I had to wait to see the doctor, as I was unscheduled, I can't imagine being treated with more care and concern anywhere else. The doctor scheduled a CT scan, on the spot, after sending me to the lab, and then to the pharmacy to pick up medicine she'd just prescribed. She called me later in the day after the results of the scan were in, and outlined to me the best course of treatment, in great detail. I have to give them the highest marks. Came in as a walk in while in crisis. Medications were ineffective. Was told they wouldn't help with a new medication for a walk in.

My fiancé went there for sporadic chest pain. He has a history of open heart surgery. They were amazing! They all treated him with respect and care. They did a few procedures & determined he needed to be admitted. We were grateful they wasted No Time! He was admitted & had surgery 2 days. We were grateful for Security as they watched his vehicle until family assisted in returning it home, (he went directly by ambulance), the techs, nursing staff, the Physicians and everyone that assisted him that day! read more

Every time I call I get placed in an endless wait. Several times I have put the phone down, put it on speaker, and sat there for exactly one hour before. I just hung up and went in in person. When you go in, everyone seems like they hate their job. Hmmm remind you of when you were in the military? No wonder they don't answer the phone. Then when you're there, you wait forever to be seen. On average a 2 hour wait. I went there yesterday and was there for 3 hours. If you are scheduling to be back to work that day, plan a half day. I have United Health Care as well, going to the VA is a last resort. read more

A clean well lighted place. Unfortunately many of the staff are under the false belief that Veterans exist to provide them with jobs. They never got the memo that this facility exists to serve Veterans. Many of the improvements make life easier for the staff and harder/more time consuming for the Veteran. Take a lesson from the San Antonio VA Hospital. A clean well lighted place that treats Veterans with some degree of dignity! read more

Friday at 8am, 14 people ahead of me in line for labs. In line, not sitting down already checked in. 15 minutes have gone by and line has moved 3 people. Only two sitting have been called. Bring back the person who kept the lab moving. These people are asleep on the clock.a once efficient department, brought to the definition of inefficiency. We deserve better. read more

A nice new facility with poor processes and indifferent staff is just a shiny object with lots of parking. The Austin outpatient clinic is emblematic of what's been wrong with the VA healthcare system. Looks good from the outside but pretty sad when you see the inner workings. Just one example: my husband had a one pm appt for a kidney ultrasound in Austin that his docs in Cedar Park and Temple said was urgent. He reported 20 minutes early and the woman at the desk said she would check him in. No one came to get him. Another patient was called at 1:30 so he went to the desk. She told him he hadn't checked in; he reminded her that she had done it. After a confused stare, she said there was a problem with the computer. He asked when he would be seen and she informed him that there were other people ahead of him since he wasn't checked in at 1:00. No other patient showed up during the next hour but she insisted that other people were having ultrasounds. At 3:00 he asked for the location of the administrator's office. Without missing a beat, she said no one would be there. He then went looking for someone who could/would help him. He ended up in the office of an ombudsman who looked and sounded concerned and pledged to go to take immediate action. This mystery man was never seen or heard from again. When my husband got back to the clinic he was informed that the tech wouldn't see anyone else that day so he would have to come back in a week and a half for the "urgent" test. read more

Staff is difficult to work with. Something as simple as a flu shot seems complicated. This is January and I just now was able to get one. I'm on a cholesterol pill and I haven't been tested in over a year. I haven't had a complete physical in two years. I called the patient advocates and have never heard from them. It took two years to get back to the pulmonary doctor for my CPAP machine. The tech that read my CPAP machine I caught him faking the test. I tried to report it but nobody takes complaints against staff. I requested a new doctor four months ago and still have not been assigned one. I came from Houston VA system and never had a problem. read more
