Visited Dr. Hisey's office for herniated discs in the lower back with rupture and acute sciatic nerve pain. TX BACK claims SPINE stand for Superior Service, Positive Attitude, Innovative Care, Nurturing Spirit and Ethical Behavior. What a lots of words that mean nothing but bunk. From getting the first appointment made, communicating with staff about prescriptions, scheduling of procedures, getting call backs. No one followed up with us after the procedure and when we called no one cared. Not sure about other locations but would not recommend Denton staff or Hisey to my enemy let alone someone I care about. read more

I came into Medical City Denton after falling off my horse and experiencing extreme back pain. Turns out I had a bad fracture to my L3, and needed back surgery ASAP. Dr Boah performed my surgery fusing my L2-L4, within a couple days I was back to walking on my own and progressing. I came up here to schedule a CT Mylogram, gave them 3 fax numbers of where to send my orders due to insurance, and they sent them somewhere else entirely. How is that even possible!! I never even got in to see a Doctor. I had a referral from my PCP, but no one at the location called me, even after leaving multiple messages. I also requested an appointment online, never heard a thing from them. A month later I'm still in pain, I finally get someone on the phone. She was now wanting me to contact my PCP to have them, fax her my proof of insurance. She didn't want to do anything herself. I already had a referral, schedule the damn appointment already!!! I am thoroughly impressed with the entire staff at Texas Back Institute. From the greeters to the nurses and assistants to the doctors and Dr. Hisey in particular, I have received phenomenal care. Even with COVID restrictions, I have been able to schedule face to face appointments. I called with questions and within the day received a call back with answers. You can tell when your providers genuinely care about your well being, and these folks certainly do care. I am shocked to see all of the 1 star reviews of Texas Back Institute. I have been treated for my grade II spondilolysthesis by Dr. Michael Hisey since 2015. My condition degraded due to the fact that I chose to lift heavy weights competitively, not due to any of the care from Dr. Hisey. I had a spinal fusion with Dr. Hisey in January 2018 and hold him and TBI in the highest esteem. I would recommend Dr. Hisey and TBI to anyone who is experiencing any form of back disorder or pain. Leading up to my back surgery, Dr. Hisey and the P.A. Tina (wish I remembered her last name) gave me the time of day to ensure that I felt knowledgeable about my prognosis and the plan to stabilize my spine and get me out of pain. I was at a point where I could not walk through the grocery store without my leg lighting up in flames (I say "flames" because the sensation was a combination of burning, numbing, and tingling). I also had a deep ache in my lower back. I had 5 pre-operative appointments with Dr. Hisey and Tina in which every question I had about my condition and surgery was answered. Leading up to my surgery, I felt completely knowledgeable about the plan, the risks, and the aftermath. I did not feel as though I was missing any information. Dr. Hisey and Tina helped me to feel completely at ease with the surgery to come. I also felt strongly that Dr. Hisey and Tina understood and tailored my care to my individual needs as an elite athlete. I competed at the world championship level in powerlifting in 2017 and spoke to Dr. Hisey about how I would like to resume competitive lifting after my surgery. He was not fazed at all by this; in fact, he assured me that I would be able to achieve more than I had achieved in my athletic career post-surgery. The surgery went phenomenally well. I was able to walk about 8 hours after my surgery (and I had three incisions - one in the ab and two in my erectors). My nerve pain down my leg disappeared immediately. My posture improved and I stopped having that characteristic "deep ache" in my lower back that I had had for so many years. My wounds healed up within a few weeks and I was back in the gym within 2 weeks of my surgery. 8 months later, I am returning to Dr. Hisey and Tina to see if I am finally fused (it takes 6-48 months). Regardless of whether or not I am fully fused 8 months later, I feel so much better and know that my future is pain-free. I am back to lifting decently heavy weights in the gym, and feel stable and strong. I am so grateful to Dr. Hisey, Tina, and the Texas Back Institute for restoring me to a pain-free existence. The one thing to watch out for if you are getting surgery is to make sure that every person in the surgery room is in network. I am still fighting with my insurance company for the tech team - the "neuromonitoring team" - to be counted as "in-network." It's not like I had the choice of neuromonitoring team. In the meantime I am getting $6,000 bills in the mail monthly to pay for the outstanding neuromonitoring charges. Hopefully Aetna understands that I did not have a choice of neuromonitoring team. I've already had to submit my claim three times with them. Maybe the third time is the charm. I've referred a friend to Texas Back Institute who had a back surgery go wrong. She had a staph infection for a year after her back surgery with another doctor. TBI resolved her issue with an outpatient visit. I live in Austin now but will be driving 4 hours for my follow-ups with Dr. Hisey and team. I wholeheartedly recommend Texas Back Institute for all of your back pain needs. read more

Was a patient about 5 years back. I went to them as referred by my PCP at the time for pain management. It wasn't my first or last place that I've been to. As a rule paying management fit into two main camps and a rare third. 1- CASH CLINIC - These have fancy names and cost $150-200 a visit and you go monthly or even twice a month. You will be REQUIRED to do the "in-house" therapy (usually steroid shots)... These will be very expensive and never work... They may or may not cause you greater pain, hope that it's temporary. They may or may not give you meds, they rarely care if you are getting by... 2- SUSPICIOUS CLINIC- and insulting. This is self explanatory. These places do talk therapy and crap... And charge you hundreds of dollars to discuss what pain is like for hours, then after a 400$ drug test, 4 Vicodin 0 refills. 3- A REAL DOCTOR- GOOD LUCK ! This is classic #1 and to top it off when they did my last TP Injection I lost movement in my left side for days... They literally fired me as a patient soon after. Surprise!!! If I could give 0 stars I would. First I had an X-ray appointment and they didn't make sure someone would be in the office that could actually do the X-rays I needed done, so I had to reschedule for a different office. Keep in mind they didn't let me know, or even know themselves, until I arrived at my appointment. HOW UNPROFESSIONAL. THEN, it took 3 phone calls to get an X-ray disc burned when I needed to switch doctors due to incompetence on behalf of the doctor and office staff, and had to wait IN PERSON for them to burn the disc even though I called 20 minutes before I arrived at the office to make sure the disc was at the front and ready for me! Wow! No wonder I found a new back doctor. Not to mention Dr Tolhurst and his assistant just brushed off my problems like they were non existent or I was making them up, why would I keep coming back if I wasn't in pain? Why would I have gone to ANY doctor in the first place if I didn't have pain? Why would I have done almost 6 months of physical therapy IF I WASN'T IN PAIN? One of the most toxic places I've ever worked. High turnover is an understatement. Not enough hours in the day to do what is expected of you. Manager Brittni Irving was the biggest joke of a manger. She sat in her office all day pulling employees away from their already short staffed positions, making the rest of us work harder, just to create office drama. I was on hold for 16 minutes and 32 seconds and when the receptionist finally came back to the line I commented on how long I had been on hold, she said "sorry, I'm the only one answering calls today" I think they may need to hire some more staff. I have just cancelled my surgery scheduled for the 1st week in March. While Dr. Tolhurst appears to be a fine surgeon, the area of concern is the horrific state of the administrative team in both Denton and Flower Mound. On two occasions, I left messages with no return calls; on one occasion I sent an email to Dr. Tolhurst (address listed in website)-no answer. Prior to my surgery, I was contact (via voice mail) by Isaac the "Surgery Scheduler". I returned his call 3 times with no response; finally contacted the FM office and he finally called back with a number of "reasons" why he had not returned my calls. Last week I attended the pre-op meeting in Flower Mound. Isaac, greeted me and looked like he was preparing for a camping trip in a sweatshirt type jacket. His office was messy and not professional. The 1st thing he showed me was a document indicating my surgery was on Tuesday, March 7! He quickly said he had made a mistake and it was on Thursday. e then proceeded to explain that the surgery was to remove a disc, insert a replacement, insert screws etc. The actual surgery was schedule to remove a bone spur! Following a discussion, he said he would have the Doctor call me on Monday, 2/25. Surprise, Surprise-NO CALL. In addition, I had previously requested that he confirm all insurance issues, I.e., were all the costs covered. He said he had NOT done that but "was sure everything would be covered". I asked about the hospital costs and was advised that I would have to contact the hospital, that he/TBI would not. The bottom line is that my comfort level with TBI has dropped to zero! If they cannot handle the basic administrative issues, then a red flag is raised and I could not bring my self to placing my well being in the hands of an organization that cannot administer basic tasks. With regard to Isaac, he called me this am after I advised his office of the cancellation. He attempted to make all kinds of excuses including the that Dr was "in clinic" yesterday and could not call. My response was that IF you were a professional, YOU would have called and advised me of the delay. Too Late! read more

I went here over a year ago, because with the name saying their the back institute, I was excited for them to give me better options than all the previous back doctor's that I've seen. There wasn't that many people in the waiting room, but I still waited for awhile. It was a nice waiting room, and they had one of those individual cup coffee makers and flavored creamers, so that was a great touch. When I was finally called in to the doctor, they reviewed my MRI that I brought and said they recommend me for the pain management shots. The shots hurt like hell when they put them in your back, and they don't work for me. I've had 4 of them and the pain never went away. However, they make thousands of dollars from those shots, so of course they are going to say thats what I should do. I asked if there is other options, and he listed just surgery and decompression, (Saying the decompression quickly and trying to move on.) I had to stop him and ask what decompression was. He reluctantly told me. I decided I wanted to try that, but they don't offer it there, I had to go to a chiropractor for it. The doctor was nice to say he would refer me, but said if it doesn't work to come back for the shots. At check out they tried to charge me over 100 dollars for that visit. I have a co pay for my insurance, and showed them the insurance card again, so they charged me the copay. A few months later I get a letter saying some doctor doesn't work there anymore so some other doctor is taking over to be my doctor.....I only went there once and they didn't treat me, but now I'm a patient there? Then over a year later I get a bill for a couple hundred dollars from this place saying they did all this meeting with me, and the insurance isn't going to cover it. But then I get a letter from my insurance saying they aren't going to pay it, because they didn't bill it within the year time frame. I'm continuously getting bills from this place saying I owe a couple hundred. For them just telling me to get their shots and me saying no, and for their referral? That's BS. Plus my insurance would have paid had they billed them in the YEAR time frame. So no I do not recommend this company, unless you hound them about their billing, to make sure they won't try to bill you a year later and for nothing. In any case, I'm not paying hundreds of dollars because I talked to their doctor for like 5 minutes. and for a referral which they gave me on a sheet of paper. So no, dr's time of 5 minutes, referral, and sheet of paper isn't worth hundreds of dollars..... I already paid my co pay of 50 dollars, that's enough. read more

Called and set an appointment to see a doctor. I was asked to fill out my paperwork online before showing up and I did. Showed up for my appointment and the receptionist was very rude, condescending. Wanted me to fill out more paperwork, demanded (not ask) for my license and insurance card. All she wanted was my co-pay after I put my wallet back in my purse. I didn't get a good vibe so I asked for my credit card back and let her know I would find another doctor. It was only then that she seemed concerned that I wasn't impressed with the unwelcome greeting I received. I'm taking my business elsewhere. read more

Dr. Boah is an excellent doctor. He literally saved my brother's life by performing an emergency craniotomy. The doctor does need to be aware of how poor his office staff is. The staff does not follow up on test scheduling or med refills. Great people have an obligation to surround themselves with great people. The office staff is definitely the weak link. read more

If you are looking for pain relief...keep looking . From having to wait days for a call back, weeks for an appointment to incompetent office staff you'll still have the same back ache with the added bonus of a headache of having to deal with them! When you're in pain you want relief quickly with the diagnosis being the goal. You will not find that here. Medication and more testing is all I got in the year I went. The office staff are incompetent, the nurses lack empathy, and they have so many patients that getting an appointment in a timely manner is impossible. I really could go on and on but believe me when I say that you will do better going somewhere else. At every appointment, I would have to remind the doctor that we had already done that, or talked about this...We were going in circles for so long that I am actually embarrassed that I put up with it for so long. If you have the time, here are just a few of the examples of my experience with TBI: Medication: Doctor was not well versed in the daily dosages of a common pain reliever and I had to tell him that what he gave me interacted with my current medications. He also said that if the medication that I was on was working then I shouldn't try to change it, so he wrote the prescription for a DIFFERENT version and dosage of said medication. Called back in severe pain so he prescribed an obscure muscle relaxer at a dosage that none of the pharmacies had on stock. They did, however, have the double dosage and stated that I could take a half but that I would need that written on the prescription. When I called the office they said that there was no provider there but that they would let him know on Monday (this was Friday). I asked if there was an on-call doctor and she said there was but I would need to call after 5. I called after 5 and the nurse that answered, laughed, and said, 'no, that's not what the doctor on call is for'. I told her that this was what I was instructed to do and she put me on hold. She came back to tell me that the nurse I talked to did not know what she was talking about and that the doctor on call 'wouldn't know if that is what my doctor would want' which made no sense since I was not asking to change what he prescribed but just the wording. She refused to send a message to the doctor on call. I did not get a call back until that next Wednesday. Testing: Among all the tests, the doctor ordered one, in particular, that he had stated (the appointment before) wouldn't even be reliable because I had just had surgery and it would take at least a year to get real results. It must be rare b/c when the nurse was checking me out she looked at another staff member and said something to the effect of "give me a break, Dr _____!' and followed it with an ugh! The other lady looked at her and said "get used to it". Then, while she was calling around to find a place that actually performed the test, she looked at me and said "you can go" in such a rude way that I didn't know how to respond. I said 'excuse me?'and she said that I could go and she would call me back. She never called me back and when I called them back they did not have a record of him requesting the test but then asked about it when I was at my next appointment. MRI: That one seemed to stump him. He gave me 2 totally different explanations of the same MRI except the second one required, you guessed it, another test. When I went back for the follow up, they had me waiting for an hour and half to see the doctor. He decided that I needed yet another $1000+ test! Eventually, I had to take over and do my own research. I went back up to the imaging facility to get another copy of the MRI with the verbiage so that I could read what the radiologist found. His report actually had some real answers! I had a clear diagnosis from the MRI report, NOT the doctor I had been paying for a year. I was able to research all of the findings and my diagnosis from this report and seek the correct treatments that DO NOT include pain medications or more testing! read more

I was admitted to medical city denton hospital through the ER. I have a neurological condition call hydrocephalus treated by a VP shunt. I was admitted with severe abdominal pain. I gave all of my information about the neurosurgeon I have been using at UTSW. Instead I was graced with with Dr. Boah. He was arrogant, condescending, and basically waived me off. He completely missed that my VP shunt was infected and draining the infection into my stomach causing inflammation, fluid build up, and an abscess near my colon. It took MY neurosurgeon from UTSW less than a minute to correctly diagnose me looking at the same CT scans when I finally made it to him. Dr. Boah decided the infection was somehow mysteriously related to my colon even though the gastroenterologist said it was not. I do not know how he is with the spine but he has no clue with the brain and should never be allowed to go near a case that involves the brain. read more

As a patient I received terrible service. The Physical Therapist and office staff ignored patients while chatting each other up about their families, plans for the weekend, shopping trips etc. instead of actually providing services. In addition to the poor level of service, this company engages in very shady billing practices. I was billed for more service time than was actually provided and for services that were presented as routine pre-authorized Physical Therapy services but were instead add on services not covered by insurance. The bill came in the mail about a month after I terminated services stating I owed an additional 400.00! When I contested the validity of the bill I received no further correspondence from them, but was surprised 3yrs later to find it on my credit report listed as a debt from the current year.
