I ordered the plate of brisket. It was so disgusting. I wouldn't even feed it to my dog. It tasted as if you put roast beef in the oven and covered it with barbecue sauce. It was extremely dry and extremely thin and honestly one of the worst briskets i've had. I paid $28 for the plate of brisket as well as a side of mac & cheese which is complete robbery for food like this. I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to eat this. It's so bad. This passable BBQ but nothing spectacular. The place mainly benefits from the fact that I live close and adore BBQ. However, since I originally hail from Kansas City to say that I am particular about BBQ would be a dramatic understatement. It will scratch the itch if your body is crying out for ribs and brisket like mine often does, but it won't be that memorable. If you blink you might miss the place located on Main. It is a house that they converted into a restaurant and they have been in business in Algonquin since the stone age from what I hear. The area is walkable though, so even if you have to park a block or so over on the street it is not that big of a deal. The best item on the menu by far is the beef ribs. They seriously do these up right and they will be falling off the bone on your plate. If I was basing this review upon ribs alone, it would be 5 stars with a bullet all day. They are sensational. Unfortunately the brisket, sausage, turkey and ham simply do not rise to this same level of splendor. Sides here like the cornbread, fries, baked beans, slaw, etc. are similarly nothing to get excited about. While this is highly subjective, I am also not a huge fan of the sauce here. It is of the sweeter and more molasses based variety, which is not to my particular preference. You might love it, but I prefer more vinegar based sauces myself. Overall, if you are in the mood for BBQ and are in the area, Texan is worth a stop in. Prices are fair and they don't skimp on portions, just don't set your expectations too high. read more

I was not very impressed with their BBQ here. I ordered their brisket sandwich and their brisket lacked flavor. It was also very dry and their BBQ sauce didn't help. I love BBQ sauce but my rule of thumb is that the meat has to taste delicious without it. Kind of like A1 sauce and a bad steak. The fries weren't that great either. If your going to put "Texas" in your restaurant, you have to live up to that name and serve top notch BBQ. I would of rated it less, but their waitress was very kind and welcoming. One of the BEST BBQ in Illinois! While in the Algonquin area Christmas shopping, we wanted something other than a burger. This restaurant is really nice for dine-in. Plenty of seating and good old cowboy/western decor. Order at the counter, food is delivered to your table. Hubby had the fried codfish with fries and coleslaw, I ordered the sliced brisket sandwich with my choice of potato being curly fries. Potato choices included baked which is a nice option. The brisket was melt-in-your mouth tender. The fries were perfectly cooked and the coleslaw slaw is a tangy vinegar based. Portions are huge. We decided to try the funnel cake here after canceling our order at a county fair this summer where they were charging $18 for a plain one. How fun to offer this at a restaurant where most desserts menus are the same old choices. We were not disappointed. This funnel cake was GINORMOUS! After eating such big meals, we could only eat half of the freshly made, perfectly cooked yummy offering for only $7. We brought half home and reheated it in the microwave and it was still pretty good. Stop here even if you just want to try the funnel cake for a treat. This is a family-owned, very friendly, small business that has been successfully doing this for many years. We wish there was a location closer to the O'Hare area. Thank God for the Texan BBQ. Had the Covid cook at home blues and ordered ribs at the last minute. They are set up for curbside pickup. Paid in advance, showed up earlier than I told them, but they took care of my order right away. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and sauced just right. Their sides were great, homemade baked beans, coleslaw and baked potatoes. We've been coming here for many years for carryout when we have guests. Nobody complains or goes home hungry. They're an asset to the neighborhood. We need to support them so they can feed us all great ribs for many more years. read more

The Texan has been around for a long time. I don't know if they're still on there, but I used to see them pop up on restaurant.com as one of the local favorites. My wife is actually the rib fan in our house, so when she suggested we give this place a try, I was more than happy to oblige her. I'm thankful that I did too, because this place has great ribs! We've had ribs in a few other local spots, but these are the best. The sauces were on point, especially the hot sauce and the spicy sauce (actually I had a hard time telling them apart, because I just kept alternating between). The ribs were fall-off-the-bone, which some rib connoisseurs will scoff at, but the meat was still in that sweet spot between firm and fall-apart-in-your-fingers. The service was friendly and patient, as the huge menu gave us a lot of options. The kids split some of the chicken, which was tender and moist. And lastly the curly fries were seasoned to perfection and a must have side item! I like the super casual atmosphere and the saloon inspired ambience. You place your order and seat yourself, and you're able to help yourself to beverages and sauces. We haven't even tapped the surface of this deep menu, so we'll be back for more soon! read more

Went there with my son last weekend. His ribs looked ok but my brisket sandwich looked like shaved overcooked cheap roast beef that I could have literally made on my own. I can only assume that the ownership has changed, perhaps more than once over the years because the food is not even close to the same as it was. Not sure that I'll be back there. Anyway... every time I ask for extra sauce I am PROMISED that it is in the bag. PROMISED. Guess what... it never is. I even ask when I pick up the order and I am told "yep it's in the bag". Because of this little thing... this $.50 cents worth of sauce that I would gladly pay for... because they are to cheap to give it when a customer asks... I will never be back to this restaurant. When I go to Mickey D's and ask for extra sauce they give it. Sometimes they charge for it sometimes they don't. When I go to Tommy's and ask for extra sauce they give it no problem. For some reason we were expecting some fancy sit down restaurant and we were so surprised that when we walked in there was the menu, wall sized and a woman behind a cash register. We ordered there and then were seated. Was not expecting a down home fast food kind of place. All the food was served almost instantly and was delicious and we look forward to returning for some ribs in the near future. The posted price for the brisket sandwich basket was $11.99. When questioned about the amount of the bill the cashier told my husband that the price of meat had gone up so they had to raise prices. Very interesting no frills place. You order at the register and then they bring you your food. Quick service all the food was hot, we really enjoyed the food everything was very tender and tasty and you get 3 choices of BBQ sauce that you can dip in or add more to your meat. The corn fritters were just ok nothing special, actually tasted like they had been frozen and came with no type of sauce. My real issue came with the cleanliness of the place, siting on the windowsill of our table was an old used spoon and when we watched them clean a dirty table across from us he just brushed the crumbs from the table onto the seats and floor of the place. I have been going here for years! Family owned business and the staff is always pleasant. The decor is Typical for a BBQ place, wood, metal, bull skulls and what not. Always smells like a smoke house as they smoke their meat in house. They do have a small bar as well. Seats are mostly booths. Be aware that you are not necessarily served. You order up front where they have a board of all the options. You pay, they give you a number and they give you your cups for fountain drinks or choose something from the cooler. They have Green River! You pick your own seat. I always grab my silverware and sauces (they have 3 to choose from). They will bring you your food once it's ready. I always tip my servers! They also have a small salad bar. The corn fritters are amazing! The cheese nuggets are good. The funnel cake is delish! I usually get the Cowboy sandwich with curly fries. Rib tips are also a go-to. My friend and I got delivery from Texan BBQ to Scorched Earth Brewery one fine evening. I was initially set up to hate them because they were really hesitant to come deliver despite being just a 5 minute drive from the brewery and despite them being in the delivery binder at the brewery and despite Yelp saying they deliver. I have to say though that once our food arrived, we both completely changed our tune. I ordered the BBQ Ham Sandwich for $6.99 and was shocked when it came because it was just so thick! Their menu is huge so it was hard to pin myself down to just one thing to order but I was really happy with the sandwich. The meat was juicy as all get out, delicious BBQ sauce and even the bun was quite good - apparently they make them in house. Texan BBQ is darn good food & the place looks exactly like what a BBQ joint should look like. Nothin' fancy. Friendly staff. Bottles of beer in a big wash basin on ice by the register. Why 2 Stars? 3 reasons (for which some may think I'm a cheap, gluttonous, jerk but I can assure you that is not the case): 1. The price. If I'm paying $7 - $8 for a sandwich I would hope it comes with at least fries or coleslaw as a side. Nope. Sides are all a la carte unless you order a dinner plate. The sandwiches we had were all very good though - though nothing you couldn't easily eat in one sitting. As a comparison I normally only eat half of a big burger ordered at other restaurants such as The Ram or Elgin Public House. Here I can eat the whole pulled pork sandwich just fine. 2. Okay, so we've established you will have to order your side(s) separately if you don't order a dinner plate. Depending on what kind of side you get it will be hit or miss as far as how much of the side item you get. Fries? Probably one of the few sides I've seen where I feel they give you a decent amount. Baked beans? Small cup. Ditto on the coleslaw. Fried okra? A handful and you paid over $3 for 'em. 3. I would not take a whole lot of issue with #1 or #2 above since they are just a small local restaurant and would like to make some sort of profit. However, it's also the type of place you order at the counter, then go sit down & they bring you the food - no table service. You want more sauce? Go up to the condiment station and get some. You want a refill on your beverage? Same. I would hope for the price I am paying they would at least have table service and I will gladly, generously tip our server. I don't mind eating at places without table service but establishments like that I frequent have either lower prices, much larger portions or come with a side. They have been excellent, following the COVID19 guidelines with their employees and patrons. If I ate meat, I would absolutely be a return customer. I don't know exactly what changes they have implemented other than those having to do with COVID19 reopening guidelines, but they sure are doing well! As someone who has to have often involuntary interactions with patrons of the restaurants and bars surrounding my building, here in downtown Algonquin, and as someone who is at high risk for serious complications, should I happen to contract COVID19, I SO appreciate their consideration. Since the beginning of COVID this has definitely been one of our Go To spots. Recently we made an order and picked it up, everything was great, until we got home and our food was mixed up. There was another person with the same name and I had his order. We called in and explained what had happened. It was an honest mistake and they were very responsive and wanted to make it right. Some other reviewers recommended the shrimp and they were right, get it. I had the breaded shrimp and my friend had the garlic shrimp, both great. I asked the other couples around the table and here's the consensus on what to order. The ratings are 1-5 with 5 being the best. Meat Shrimp - 5 Ribs - 4 (too much sauce but fall of the bone!) I'm giving this place five stars because I frequent this place with my boyfriend and have NEVER had a bad experience. No you don't get sat by a host/hostess. You order in the front, get a number and sit down. This place is NOT fancy. It's a BBQ place, you don't want fancy at a BBQ. The prices are fair, the people are friendly, their sauces are good, the food is ALWAYS good, there's fun texas "flair" all over to gaze at while you get your BBQ on in the suburban Illinois. I have never been to Texas but I have friends who will vouch that this place is pretty great for not being in Texas, that has to go for something? Things I've tried and I would recommend : Beef Ribs, they are huge and have so much meat and so much flavor. Smoked Sausage ...full of flavor, you can't go wrong, I promise. I really like their chili - not hamburger soup - it is Texas style chili. You can also order a jalapeno cornbread with it and the two make a complete meal. If you have not had Texas style chili it is a treat (to me). I was first introduced at the Texas Chili Parlor in Austin; this place is the closest I have had to their chili since leaving Austin. I have also tried burgers at this location but the chili is enough to make a visit. They also specialize in Texas BBQ - that is brisket not pork as their best meal.
