Went here today for dinner and was totally disappointed. I would have given less then one star but there is nothing less. They make you pay for your dinner before you get so as when you get the horrible food they got your money. I ordered prime rib and when it came it was not fit for my dog to eat. I asked for the manager waited 10 minutes and they couldn't even give me the courtesy to even listen to my issues. read more

Texan BBQ - This what the prime rib looked like. Like I said not even fit for my dog. - Barbeque Near Me - Algonquin, Illinois

This passable BBQ but nothing spectacular. The place mainly benefits from the fact that I live close and adore BBQ. However, since I originally hail from Kansas City to say that I am particular about BBQ would be a dramatic understatement. It will scratch the itch if your body is crying out for ribs and brisket like mine often does, but it won't be that memorable. If you blink you might miss the place located on Main. It is a house that they converted into a restaurant and they have been in business in Algonquin since the stone age from what I hear. The area is walkable though, so even if you have to park a block or so over on the street it is not that big of a deal. The best item on the menu by far is the beef ribs. They seriously do these up right and they will be falling off the bone on your plate. If I was basing this review upon ribs alone, it would be 5 stars with a bullet all day. They are sensational. Unfortunately the brisket, sausage, turkey and ham simply do not rise to this same level of splendor. Sides here like the cornbread, fries, baked beans, slaw, etc. are similarly nothing to get excited about. While this is highly subjective, I am also not a huge fan of the sauce here. It is of the sweeter and more molasses based variety, which is not to my particular preference. You might love it, but I prefer more vinegar based sauces myself. Overall, if you are in the mood for BBQ and are in the area, Texan is worth a stop in. Prices are fair and they don't skimp on portions, just don't set your expectations too high. read more

I was not very impressed with their BBQ here. I ordered their brisket sandwich and their brisket lacked flavor. It was also very dry and their BBQ sauce didn't help. I love BBQ sauce but my rule of thumb is that the meat has to taste delicious without it. Kind of like A1 sauce and a bad steak. The fries weren't that great either. If your going to put "Texas" in your restaurant, you have to live up to that name and serve top notch BBQ. I would of rated it less, but their waitress was very kind and welcoming. The person taking your order in the front wasn't though. She was rude and to the point. There are far more better options for BBQ. Probably won't be returning. read more

Been going here for over 20 years. Used to be my favorite 5 star place. But the service lacks on our last visit. Was standing waiting for food and someone who just ordered came back because something was missing, that should have been a sign. We get back home and of the 2 meals, 1 is wrong and 2 sodas are missing. Double check your pickup order before leaving. read more

Great pulled pork sandwich. The place was crowded so we did carry out. Everything was tasty. The wait was a little long because 2 guys an motorcycles drove from Wisconsin to place a large carry out order. I would recommend! We were there on a Saturday at 1pm read more

The Texan has been around for a long time. I don't know if they're still on there, but I used to see them pop up on restaurant.com as one of the local favorites. My wife is actually the rib fan in our house, so when she suggested we give this place a try, I was more than happy to oblige her. I'm thankful that I did too, because this place has great ribs! We've had ribs in a few other local spots, but these are the best. The sauces were on point, especially the hot sauce and the spicy sauce (actually I had a hard time telling them apart, because I just kept alternating between). The ribs were fall-off-the-bone, which some rib connoisseurs will scoff at, but the meat was still in that sweet spot between firm and fall-apart-in-your-fingers. The service was friendly and patient, as the huge menu gave us a lot of options. The kids split some of the chicken, which was tender and moist. And lastly the curly fries were seasoned to perfection and a must have side item! I like the super casual atmosphere and the saloon inspired ambience. You place your order and seat yourself, and you're able to help yourself to beverages and sauces. We haven't even tapped the surface of this deep menu, so we'll be back for more soon! read more

Everything was awesome! The food was excellent in addition to the service. We had a large party and they were able to accommodate us. Nice casual atmosphere. The cornbread muffin is delicious. read more

Really want this to be great, but unfortunately it is just ok. Got the meat lover dinner so we could try most of the meats they offer. Ribs were just ok. Chubby's ribs a mile down the road are much better. Pulled pork was ok. Brisket was a bit dry. Turkey seems like lunch meat with bbq sauce. Sausage was tasty. Baked beans are a can of chili beans with bbq sauce added. Potato salad good flavor, but potatoes undercooked. Coleslaw was great! Also, the 3% credit card fees are annoying. The food is not inexpensive. Overall, not excited about Texan BBQ. Staff seemed friendly. read more

I ordered the plate of brisket. It was so disgusting. I wouldn't even feed it to my dog. It tasted as if you put roast beef in the oven and covered it with barbecue sauce. It was extremely dry and extremely thin and honestly one of the worst briskets i've had. I paid $28 for the plate of brisket as well as a side of mac & cheese which is complete robbery for food like this. I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to eat this. It's so bad. I was going to complain to the front counter, but all the workers were hiding in the back. If you would like real barbecue, I would not recommend this to anyone. read more

Family owned and operated, the Texan is a must visit for BBQ lovers. The Texan does all BBQ well. The ribs are fantastic as well as the Cowboy sandwich. The sauce they make is rich and tangy, with different levels of heat to accommodate everybody. The family who owns the Texan takes pride in offering the best BBQ around! read more

Right next to Fox River. Excellent location. Perfect parking. Now for the food, it's beyond delicious. The meat is so tender and the BBQ sauce is out of this world. Do your self a favor and buy a few of their signature bottles of BBQ sauce for when you BBQ at home. Thanks for the excellent food and the fantastic service! read more

Thank God for the Texan BBQ. Had the Covid cook at home blues and ordered ribs at the last minute. They are set up for curbside pickup. Paid in advance, showed up earlier than I told them, but they took care of my order right away. The ribs were fall off the bone tender and sauced just right. Their sides were great, homemade baked beans, coleslaw and baked potatoes. We've been coming here for many years for carryout when we have guests. Nobody complains or goes home hungry. They're an asset to the neighborhood. We need to support them so they can feed us all great ribs for many more years. read more

One of the BEST BBQ in Illinois! While in the Algonquin area Christmas shopping, we wanted something other than a burger. This restaurant is really nice for dine-in. Plenty of seating and good old cowboy/western decor. Order at the counter, food is delivered to your table. Hubby had the fried codfish with fries and coleslaw, I ordered the sliced brisket sandwich with my choice of potato being curly fries. Potato choices included baked which is a nice option. The brisket was melt-in-your mouth tender. The fries were perfectly cooked and the coleslaw slaw is a tangy vinegar based. Portions are huge. We decided to try the funnel cake here after canceling our order at a county fair this summer where they were charging $18 for a plain one. How fun to offer this at a restaurant where most desserts menus are the same old choices. We were not disappointed. This funnel cake was GINORMOUS! After eating such big meals, we could only eat half of the freshly made, perfectly cooked yummy offering for only $7. We brought half home and reheated it in the microwave and it was still pretty good. Stop here even if you just want to try the funnel cake for a treat. This is a family-owned, very friendly, small business that has been successfully doing this for many years. We wish there was a location closer to the O'Hare area. Give them a try or keep supporting this great business. You won't be disappointed. read more

Went there with my son last weekend. His ribs looked ok but my brisket sandwich looked like shaved overcooked cheap roast beef that I could have literally made on my own. I can only assume that the ownership has changed, perhaps more than once over the years because the food is not even close to the same as it was. Not sure that I'll be back there. A shame because it was once out go to bbq place in the area. read more

This place has been around for as long as I can remember. I've been to it several times in the past and pass it many times in my travels these days. Unfortunately I usually can't stop for a meal, so I was excited when I was in the area and I had time to kill. I stopped in and got one of their pulled porks. (I've learned to ask for them lean). It was as delicious as I remember. I love this place because it's consistently great. If your hankerin' for some Texas barbeque ribs or pulled pork. As much as I hate to do this, enough is enough. When it comes to the food it is excellent. The best in mchenry county. Pricey but you get what you pay for. I highly recommend the stew. It has a little bit of everything and it will remind you of what grandma used to make. Ribs and chicken fantastic. By far 100x's better then the crystal lake rib house or any other wanna be bar-b-q places in the area. Now the bad.... don't even think about asking for anything extra. In take out don't ask for extra sauce. Don't ask for silverware. Don't ask for extra rolls or even for butter. I spend a few hundred dollars a month at this place. Always on take out. For my office. For my home. Every time I always ask for extra sauce for the French fries (the steak fries at this place are to die for. If you grew up in Chicago think Carson's steak fries). The fries are crisp.. they are fresh... they are potatoes from god. I always get 2-3 POUNDS of the steak fries because I will dip them in bar-b-q sauce and eat them as a meal all by themselves. Anyway... every time I ask for extra sauce I am PROMISED that it is in the bag. PROMISED. Guess what... it never is. I even ask when I pick up the order and I am told "yep it's in the bag". Because of this little thing... this $.50 cents worth of sauce that I would gladly pay for... because they are to cheap to give it when a customer asks... I will never be back to this restaurant. When I go to Mickey D's and ask for extra sauce they give it. Sometimes they charge for it sometimes they don't. When I go to Tommy's and ask for extra sauce they give it no problem. When I dive an hour and go to Carson's in Deerfield and ask for extra sauce they give me 5 or 6 of them. When I go to Hillary's in Waukegan and ask for sauce they give me a quart. But this place 10 minutes from my house that I go to 3 times per week won't. And don't even get me started about asking for silverware in take out...... read more

Not bad at all. Good breading and decent size. I had sliced brisket and ordered the tenders as another option. The brisket was great... the chicken tenders, for a bbq place, was pretty good as well. Great food. Love the beef ribs. It is a little pricey but really good. The staff isn't very friendly, but I usually get it to go.

I loved the food. They have nice and reasonable price. Good portion for sides and very well flavored.

My husband went there last night and when the he was presented with the bill it was $49.52. This was for two brisket sandwiches (w/fries and coleslaw) and 2 orders of corn fritters. The posted price for the brisket sandwich basket was $11.99. When questioned about the amount of the bill the cashier told my husband that the price of meat had gone up so they had to raise prices. The price for the brisket basket was now $17.99 - up $6! Had we known this, we would NEVER have ordered them. read more

For some reason we were expecting some fancy sit down restaurant and we were so surprised that when we walked in there was the menu, wall sized and a woman behind a cash register. We ordered there and then were seated. Was not expecting a down home fast food kind of place. All the food was served almost instantly and was delicious and we look forward to returning for some ribs in the near future. In a way it seemed liked a place out of space place and time like we had traveled back to the 1800's and were down South once we walked in the door! There is love and passion in the air. read more

My friend and I got delivery from Texan BBQ to Scorched Earth Brewery one fine evening. I was initially set up to hate them because they were really hesitant to come deliver despite being just a 5 minute drive from the brewery and despite them being in the delivery binder at the brewery and despite Yelp saying they deliver. I have to say though that once our food arrived, we both completely changed our tune. I ordered the BBQ Ham Sandwich for $6.99 and was shocked when it came because it was just so thick! Their menu is huge so it was hard to pin myself down to just one thing to order but I was really happy with the sandwich. The meat was juicy as all get out, delicious BBQ sauce and even the bun was quite good - apparently they make them in house. Texan BBQ surprised me by having really tasty food and I'm happy say I definitely plan on patronizing them again when I'm up that way. read more

Texan BBQ is darn good food & the place looks exactly like what a BBQ joint should look like. Nothin' fancy. Friendly staff. Bottles of beer in a big wash basin on ice by the register. Why 2 Stars? 3 reasons (for which some may think I'm a cheap, gluttonous, jerk but I can assure you that is not the case): 1. The price. If I'm paying $7 - $8 for a sandwich I would hope it comes with at least fries or coleslaw as a side. Nope. Sides are all a la carte unless you order a dinner plate. The sandwiches we had were all very good though - though nothing you couldn't easily eat in one sitting. As a comparison I normally only eat half of a big burger ordered at other restaurants such as The Ram or Elgin Public House. Here I can eat the whole pulled pork sandwich just fine. 2. Okay, so we've established you will have to order your side(s) separately if you don't order a dinner plate. Depending on what kind of side you get it will be hit or miss as far as how much of the side item you get. Fries? Probably one of the few sides I've seen where I feel they give you a decent amount. Baked beans? Small cup. Ditto on the coleslaw. Fried okra? A handful and you paid over $3 for 'em. 3. I would not take a whole lot of issue with #1 or #2 above since they are just a small local restaurant and would like to make some sort of profit. However, it's also the type of place you order at the counter, then go sit down & they bring you the food - no table service. You want more sauce? Go up to the condiment station and get some. You want a refill on your beverage? Same. I would hope for the price I am paying they would at least have table service and I will gladly, generously tip our server. I don't mind eating at places without table service but establishments like that I frequent have either lower prices, much larger portions or come with a side. We only go to the Texan when our friends who live in the area want to dine here. read more

I had our Super Bowl party catered by the Texan and I have frequented their to-go lunch menu with co-workers. We have co-workers from Texas request their BBQ when they are in town - I think that speaks for itself. Their presentation, BBQ, staff, and overall restaurant is great. I also like being able to support a local business. read more

Very interesting no frills place. You order at the register and then they bring you your food. Quick service all the food was hot, we really enjoyed the food everything was very tender and tasty and you get 3 choices of BBQ sauce that you can dip in or add more to your meat. The corn fritters were just ok nothing special, actually tasted like they had been frozen and came with no type of sauce. My real issue came with the cleanliness of the place, siting on the windowsill of our table was an old used spoon and when we watched them clean a dirty table across from us he just brushed the crumbs from the table onto the seats and floor of the place. I would return because the BBQ meat was very good, but I would get it to go and try and not wonder if the kitchen is kept like the dining area. read more

Meat would be good if it was fresh, but they microwaved everything on the sampler plate for me. I'm never going beck.

This is, hands down, the worst bbq ever and what's up with the cheesy mac soup?! Do NOT waste your money here!

Excellent! Food is fresh and excellent and been in business serving the community for years

I'm giving this place five stars because I frequent this place with my boyfriend and have NEVER had a bad experience. No you don't get sat by a host/hostess. You order in the front, get a number and sit down. This place is NOT fancy. It's a BBQ place, you don't want fancy at a BBQ. The prices are fair, the people are friendly, their sauces are good, the food is ALWAYS good, there's fun texas "flair" all over to gaze at while you get your BBQ on in the suburban Illinois. I have never been to Texas but I have friends who will vouch that this place is pretty great for not being in Texas, that has to go for something? Things I've tried and I would recommend : Beef Ribs, they are huge and have so much meat and so much flavor. Smoked Sausage ...full of flavor, you can't go wrong, I promise. The Cornbread Muffin - I'm not a fan of cornbread but I like this cornbread and it's HUGE, compliments BBQ perfectly. Beef Brisket is ok, it tends to get cold fast though, I hate that. This place is fun and friendly and has good bbq, I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a good bbq place in the burbs. read more

Texan BBQ - Beef Ribs! - Barbeque Near Me - Algonquin, Illinois

The hubby and I took the family here for Valentine's Day... nothing says "romance" more than BBQ, right? Actually, I was trying to theme the day. Last year I made heart shaped pancakes for our Valentine's Day dinner... this year, I didn't want to cook, but I wanted something red... BBQ sauce is red! Problem solved. I ordered the turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes. I love the mashed potatoes at The Texan... so does my 5 year old daughter. She and I ended up trading - my mashed potatoes for her curly fries. My son ordered the hot dog meal while my daughters ordered the mac n cheese meal. All kids meals come with a side, a drink and beans. And, kids eat free on Monday's and Tuesday's (with a paid adult meal). The turkey sandwich was wonderful... so were the curly fries. All the kids housed their food and they all enjoyed it. The Texan has Green River, which is a favorite with my kiddies. read more

I really like their chili - not hamburger soup - it is Texas style chili. You can also order a jalapeno cornbread with it and the two make a complete meal. If you have not had Texas style chili it is a treat (to me). I was first introduced at the Texas Chili Parlor in Austin; this place is the closest I have had to their chili since leaving Austin. I have also tried burgers at this location but the chili is enough to make a visit. They also specialize in Texas BBQ - that is brisket not pork as their best meal. The decor is like an Old West Saloon and it is fun for kids. For children you will have a challenge on the menu. They know how to make their chili spicy so it is great for an adult but my son is not a big fan of their food. Great place for a quick stop and a hearty bowl of chili. read more

I have been going here for years! Family owned business and the staff is always pleasant. The decor is Typical for a BBQ place, wood, metal, bull skulls and what not. Always smells like a smoke house as they smoke their meat in house. They do have a small bar as well. Seats are mostly booths. Be aware that you are not necessarily served. You order up front where they have a board of all the options. You pay, they give you a number and they give you your cups for fountain drinks or choose something from the cooler. They have Green River! You pick your own seat. I always grab my silverware and sauces (they have 3 to choose from). They will bring you your food once it's ready. I always tip my servers! They also have a small salad bar. The corn fritters are amazing! The cheese nuggets are good. The funnel cake is delish! I usually get the Cowboy sandwich with curly fries. Rib tips are also a go-to. There is nothing there that I haven't liked. They also cater! This place is def worth a stop in, you won't be disappointed! read more

First time customer; came for the ribs, but will not return for anything. The rib meat fell off the bones, had no consistency, had too much sauce and they were not barbequed. Place has been going downhill over the last few years. Staff can be very confrontational over little things, such as asking for extra BBQ sauce. They'll tell you to buy their bottle if you u want more. Sheesh! And speaking of BBQ sauce, if you order their full slab for carryout, they'll cut them in half and stack them in a container on top one another. They'll pour bbq sauce over the top slab, and thats it! The bottom slab is pale as a ghost. They give one BBQ sauce on the side, which is barely sufficient. Just don't ask for extra sauce! I was in this place once 25 years or so ago; they've been around for about 30+ years in this distant Chicago suburb. It's fairly standard barbecue fare (for the midwest) offering a full menu, including pork and beef ribs, turkey, sausage, chicken, brisket and additional, non-smoked fare like burgers, chicken fried steak and the like. Standard sides are beans, slaw, and a choice of potato. Food is available on plates, with one, two, or three meats, or as sandwiches. Meats are cooked in house on a hickory fire. Order and pay for your food at the counter when you walk in, have a seat and your meals will be brought to you. The have a 'sauce bar', where you can fill ramekins of "mild," "hot," or "spicy" sauce, but they all tasted exactly the same to me. We had the ribs/chicken combo, the chicken fried steak, and an order of rings. The chicken fried steak was a large serving, two pieces, with gravy and biscuits and the aforementioned sides. The menu had stated each entree came with Texas toast and pickles, but no such luck today. Biscuits were the order of the day, instead. If you're a regular reader of my posts, you know how much I go for Texas toast! Was it great? Not really? Worth a drive? Not really. A good value? Not really. It's one of those times where as cliched as it sounds, "it was what it was." But to last over 30 years, he must be doing something right. The Texan BBQ also caters read more

I haven't even eaten here, and never would, as a vegan, but I've got to commend these folks on really upping their game lately. They have been excellent, following the COVID19 guidelines with their employees and patrons. If I ate meat, I would absolutely be a return customer. I don't know exactly what changes they have implemented other than those having to do with COVID19 reopening guidelines, but they sure are doing well! As someone who has to have often involuntary interactions with patrons of the restaurants and bars surrounding my building, here in downtown Algonquin, and as someone who is at high risk for serious complications, should I happen to contract COVID19, I SO appreciate their consideration.
