My family and I have dined here twice so far since I got a hankering for some good BBQ and went on a Yelp hunt for a more "Mom and Pop" run place and we definitely plan to make it a regular dinner spot. This is a really, really good BBQ joint. The ribs are outstanding. They are so tender that the meat falls away from the bone when you pick it up and it absolutely melts in your mouth. The pulled pork, though, that is where they got this southern boys attention. It is phenomenal! It has the luscious smoked flavor from a long slow cook and the meat is still perfectly moist so that you don't have to smother it in their BBQ sauce or wash each bite down with a gallon of tea. The sauce is also pretty outstanding. It is rich and "tomatoey" and very smooth without a huge brown sugar or vinegar bite to it. The slaw, BBQ beans, steak fries, and roll that came with the dinner are all plenty acceptable and what you would expect them to be. yeah, ummmm do not waste your time with this place. the food was gross and fatty. The sauce was terrible. The floors were so dirty I was sticking to them. Second thought I was also sticking to the tables. It smelled dirty in there. It doesn't resemble Texas BBQ at all. 16.00 bucks is the average price per meal. OH and after you order they will forget to give you half of your food. There is this new place in Woodstock that is soooo much better, can't remember the name of it. I was telling neighbors about my experience at the Texan and they just looked at me and said, we could have told you not to bother - its terrible! Wish I would have known. We just catered our sons birthday party from the Texan. Our son loves ribs and these are his favorite! We ordered the baby back ribs, beef brisket, and cornbread. Everything was amazing. Our guests were raving about how tender and delicious both the ribs and brisket were. I highly recommend this place! We are big fans! Will definitely be catering from again in the future. read more

Sometimes I am not sure what people are really thinking. This is our favorite place for bbq ribs!! They are fall off the bone ribs. I have never enjoyed ribs out as much as I do these. We tell everybody about this place. Chicken fried steak with gravy and garlic mashed, very good. Coleslaw is also good, we have never had a bad meal here. Without a doubt, this is the absolute best BBQ in Illinois. The homemade BBQ sauce is unmatched and is super delicious. I was introduced to this place in 1998 and have loved it since. Side note, the corn fritters are super awesome. I'd give this place 10 stars if it was possible. read more

Located in an old house, The Texan is the best Bar-B-Que north of the Mason-Dixon line! I've been all over the country, and the consistent quality of the Texan makes it great. Meats are cooked overnight, and the sauces (which you can purchase) come in various 'heats'. When family visits from Michigan it's always the place they want to go. I'm not sure that they need to move to new digs. The nice thing about this original location is that is has character. It's place you'd pass by without a second look, but once .you try it, it will become your favorite 'secret' to share with others read more

This may not be at the level of what you might get in Austin TX but this is simply the best barbecue you can get in the area. It's a little hole in the wall by the fox river. Service is great and the BBQ is fantastic -- get the meat sampler. You won't need to eat for a week and it gives you a great selection of a lot of different things. 1st time there-never going back ! We spent almost $50 for 2 people & left hungry! I had the bbq 1/2 chicken (I don't eat the dark meat). The white meat was like eating shoe leather...had to get x-tra sauce to dip it in & still couldn't chew it. Hubby got the 2 meat dinner, chicken & 1/2 slab ribs (which consisted of 3 ribs!!!) His chicken was just as dry. Baked beans were way too sweet. Potato & colslaw was average. Hubby was charged 2 different prices for the same beer. Place itself was cute, nothing to rave about. Other bbq's in the general area got this place beat....don't see how someone could have rated this 5 stars!! read more

The food is good, but the carry out service is very poor. The past 4-5 times I have ordered from there they have forgotten the baked potato and coleslaw as a side. In fact, one of the times they neglected to give us 6 baked potatoes and orders of coleslaw when we had a family gathering. The first and only time I will go to this place. I ordered takeout and it was a ripoff. Almost $40.00 for two entrees and the smallest portions ever. The brisket is sliced thin like gyro meat and covered in sauce. The sausage was also cut up and burned. I also ordered a piece of pecan pie- a sliver barely a 1/2 in width and it was $3.99 and soggy. I see reviews complaining about the fact you actually have to order at a counter (gasp), get your own drinks, and then actually seat yourself (How horrible). It is a way to keep the costs down. You don't have to tip and you get a good meal which you can sit down and hang with your friends or family. It's a dive, but that's what is great about it. Everyone I know that has eaten there has always loved their food. And that is the whole point of a restaurant, good food. There is no waitstaff to complain about, since the only thing close to it is the food runner.The parking situation sucks but If you want a casual lunch or dinner, this is a great option. Just moved to the Algonquin area and tried out this restaurant. Was very pleased when I ordered the chicken wings. A plate of hot, very well proportioned and seasoned poultry arrived all for $.80 cents a wing. They tasted as good as they looked and have ordered multiple times now. If I could give this a half of a star, I would. We heard mixed reviews about Texan BBQ but were curious and tried it out today. Our take out order consisted of 3 full slabs, steak fries, curly fries, beans and cole slaw w/rolls. It was expensive. The ribs were overcooked (there is no doubt about it-they were cooked days or as much as a week or more before they were served), then reheated in the microwave and placed on a grill top for grill marks--and then burned! The slabs were SO DRY that the rib bone ends were hollow & black. Sure the meat "fell of the bone" but it wasn't tender & juicy it was dry and tough! We ordered 1 full slab without the sauce (to please a sauce-free palette) but even he was asking for some sauce ----ANY sauce to moisten the ribs up or help them taste better. Alas it didn't help. The cole slaw was fine ground cabbage, mushy, overly sweet and milky. Rolls were stale, dry on top and soggy on the bottom. Even the steak fries-which had been prepared and reheated many times over-tasted horrible, as if the oil had not been changed for a long time. Curly fries order consisted of broken bits of fry curls served with 2 curls tossed in for good measure. Texan BBQ is the worst of the worst-they took nearly $70.00 for cruddy leftovers without batting an eye. If they were closer, I would have taken the order straight back and demanded a refund. All I can say is that everyone likes something different and plenty of restaurants follow these types of practices (pre cooking and reheating food for quick service). The public has proven that they will eat and pay for any quality of food. But if you appreciate fresh food, properly cooked you'll go somewhere else--because you won't get that here. Save your money and your taste buds. Going out is supposed to be a treat, not torture. What a RIP OFF. read more

I went in with a smile on my face and hope in my heart. I ordered the standard of all BBQs, a brisket sandwich. I lifted the lid of the foam container to discover another foam lid on my sandwich - a foam bun. Awful bun. OK, nm, it is about the brisket, right ? One look at it and my stomach flopped. There was sauce (which tasted identical to Jack Daniels Bottled sauce) all over the top of the 'brisket' - one look told me that I had something entirely different than a brisket sandwich. I will eat my hat if that was not simply some cheap Round instead. No fat, no flavor whatsoever, except for Jack Daniels Sauce. I found one lonely piece that did not have sauce all over it and tasted it...nothing...maybe the aroma of cardboard. It was dry, tasteless mystery meat covered in sauce to simulate flavor. If you like smoked sauce flavor, get some corrugated cardboard and pour some Jack Daniels sauce over it and slap it between two pieces of Wonder Bread and you have the complete picture. This was my first visit and will be my last visit. This place was a HUGE disappointment. They are extremely overpriced for the portions they give you and you are basically on your own as far as service. You order and pay your food as at the counter like you would at a fast food restaurant and they bring it out to you after you find somehwere to sit. You are on your own as far as drink refills, getting condiments, etc. So, with that being said, please keep this in mind when you are paying for your food with a credit card and there is that tip amount line. There is no need to tip because after the server brings your food, you dont see her again until she is bringing another table their food. I give this review 2 stars only based on the taste of the food. I will admit the ribs were good, just an extremely overpriced meal like I mentioned. There are other rib places in the area where you get more for the money and the taste is the same if not better. read more
