Caldwell Shoe Repair

I'd be cautious about using Caldwell Shoe Repair…read more I dropped off two pairs of shoes: a pair of Thursday Monkstraps and my Allen Edmonds walnut wingtip boots. The work I wanted was straightforward. I needed a rubber sole added over the existing leather welted soles, as the leather soles were still in good condition and did not need to be replaced. The monkstraps also needed a heel replacement and both pairs needed a high shine to remove scuffs. The woman at the front counter was very pleasant and explained that the owner would need to call me to confirm the process and pricing. When the owner called, I explained exactly what I wanted done. His first response was, "I know what I'm doing," delivered in a tone that came across as impatient and dismissive. What concerned me was that the pricing he quoted appeared to reflect a full resole and heel replacement on both pairs. I tried to clarify that I specifically did not want the leather soles removed because the shoes are welted and the soles were still in good shape. Again, the response was, "I know what I'm doing." For a repair quote of approximately $260 on two pairs of shoes, I expected more effort to understand the customer's request. It wasn't the price that bothered me. It was the lack of communication and the unwillingness to listen. I later returned to pick up my shoes, and the owner offered to do the work for less. By that point, however, the issue was no longer the cost. My concern was that he had never demonstrated that he understood the repair I was asking for, which left me with little confidence the work would be completed correctly. There are plenty of skilled cobblers out there. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I chose to take my business elsewhere.
