My friends suggest this place as I really love Japanese food. The entrance look small but once you enter it's very cozy. They even provide private room for extra so you could have celebration or businesses meal so private and luxury. The price is absolutely cheaper than the quality. The fish quality is the best. If you want authentic Japanese food it's will not disappoint. read more

Was at t mobile adding a phone line which took a couple hours so decided to try this restaurant that was next door. As soon as you walk in there's no greeting or instruction or sign of where to seat, so I sat myself at the sushi counter, took the waitress ten minutes just to greet. Service was extremely slow. Our sushi roll came out and we had time to finish it before our Gyoza app came out.. Language barrier at sushi counter was really bad, they didn't even know what Kani was.. had to get someone to translate just to get the roll I wanted, which TASTED good but fell apart as soon as it was touched with chopsticks.. When I asked the server what roll to order she couldn't tell me any of the ingredients in the roll she RECOMMENDED. Next thing you know a completely different waitress starts taking care of us.. it was really confusing. We finished our apps and sat there for a another good ten minutes before we had to ASK to order our dinner. After waiting for at least another 20 minutes without any more food in front of us.. we asked for the check and to box up the food. Horrible experience, won't be back. But then there's the food we got to go. Teriyaki steak was dry without hardly any sauce, dry salad without dressing and a potato salad ball with a dried up orange. Very disappointed. Waste of 60$ read more

Teppay - Dry Teriyaki steak, dressingless salad and a ball of potatoes salad with dry/old orange - Sushi Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

Disappointed again... The rice consistency was horrible, which is detrimental to a Japanese restaurant. We ordered Tendon and Kaisen-don, and the Tempura was ok but the rice was very wet (donburi rice is supposed to have firm texture so that the rice does't stick too much to the Tempura). And the rice for the Kaisen-don (sashimi over rice) was wet and warm, where Kaisen-don rice is supposed to be cooled down, just like a sushi rice, because you don't want the fresh fish over the rice to get warm (raw seafood should not be warm)... The sashimi did not feel fresh because of the warm and wet rice, and the gari (ginger) also tasted horrible. We can get much better/fresher Kaisen-don and gari for half the price at Daido! Several years ago (before Covid) this place was one of our go to Japanese restaurants, but back then we had the incident where our sushi had avocado skin inside, and the sushi-chef didn't even apologize, and after wanting to give it another chance, now this... The waitress is still just as bad as I remember, where she doesn't have the courtesy to make you feel welcome (makes you want to tell her that a customer is not forcing her to work there, so if she chose to work there show some hospitality and smile to give sense of welcome; without paying customers you don't have a job). And don't take away the plates when there's no place to hold the chopsticks/silverware. Japanese restaurants should have a hashi-oki (chopsticks holder) to place the chopsticks between dishes. Gave it another chance, but will not be going back again (even with a different owner, bad training and bad management seems to be the same). read more

I came here for my birthday dinner with my group of girlfriends and not only did it exceed my already high expectations, it really impressed them (their first time here). I've come before but have never sat in the tatami mat private room but I reserved it a week in advance just for this special day. Sitting in here felt like an authentic Japanese experience and so exclusive. The service was phenomenal, the sushi is fresh, and I just loved everything about this experience. My go to roll here is probably the rainbow roll. Not only is it visually appealing, it tastes so smooth and rich. The one thing I tell people to get here is the scallop - it's buttery soft and fresh. Teppay is my favorite high end/expensive sushi spot in Houston and totally underrated, it doesn't look like much from the outside/parking lot, but this little hole in the wall will give you the best sushi you've had in town. read more

When you enter, you can tell there is limited seating, so come during an off time. Service is quick and very helpful. The servers work together to bring you your drinks, take your orders and deliver food. They always cleared the table to make room for the next entrees. I tried many different items that were yelp approved and I can relate or disagree with those. We ordered the following: Shrimp tempura Miso clams Miso cod Aji Sweet shrimp Mackerel Hamachi Tonkotsu Uni Spicy scallop Fresh water eel Toro And maybe more Started off with the house sake, not as hot as I'd like it. House sake was sweet and hits you at the end. Not very smooth, but great with the sashimi/sushi Shrimp tempura comes with 3 shrimp, 3 vegetables. $7 for this and it's average. Dipping sauce was light. Miso clams are a must. Deliciously made with full of flavor. The broth is rich and the clams are cleaned thoroughly and cooked perfectly Miso cod was very delicious. The flavor on this would be perfect as a meal. Tonkotsu was nice and rich. Lacked salt, but made with bamboo shoots, chives, pork, and a boiled egg. The pork was tough. Noodles were soft and slippery! Consistency was good more you ate it. The sushi was a hit or miss. I was looking forward to the uni and toro but they were just okay. Made with way too much rice and I hate that I had to take it out my mouth. The eel was very meaty and needed extra sauce! Spicy scallop was good. Overall, experience here was just okay. Not bad for the price, but it adds up! So so sushi read more

I am a supporter of this local sushi restaurant. It is in walking distance from my apartment so I've come here plenty of times the past few weeks. I enjoy the traditional cozy ambiance they have going on and it's great to see the skilled Japanese sushi chefs preparing the items. Some would say the prices are a bit higher than other places but I believe for the quality and portion you receive it is worth it! Everything I've eaten here have been very fresh. I have yet to try their dinner entree items but have read such great things about them and can't wait to try the ramen and unagi don. Currently sitting at the sushi bar writing this review. I've been here a few other times and this place never disappoints. Very good quality and authentically Japanese! For two people we usually spend about 100$ so it's not nearly as expensive as those places. You get good sized fish and they have such a variety of other Japanese dishes as well. Ramen, udon, rice plates, tempura, so many more. My favorite thing is the chopped scallop sushi. I like it at other places but here is my literally favorite. I always order two! It's in a strip center and a bit of a hidden gem but totally worth a look. I will be coming back again and again. It reminds me of being back in jaoan read more

It's disappointing that what used to be my favorite Japanese restaurant is no longer the same. Like many others have experienced, the service and food quality have deteriorated significantly, and there are no longer any Japanese-speaking servers as there used to be. My husband and I came at 7:30pm on a Friday night and waited for about 30 minutes. I had no idea it was that busy. I heard alot about their ramen and their fresh sushi so that's exactly what we got. Food: Tonkatsu Ramen - it was mediocre compared to NYC, but compared to other places in Houston it's above average. I did have to add quite a bit of the japanese seasoning and white pepper to enhance the flavor. The char siu didn't have the grill flavor. The broth was one of the highlights - you can tell it was cooked for hours and hours because of the richness. 3/5 stars Chirashi bowl - great variety of sushi over a bed of seasoned rice. It was extremely filling. It had great presentation. The sushi chef personally brings the finished bowl to you (no other places has the sushi chef walk your chirashi bowl to your table and greet you in Japanese). The sushi was fresh. I highly recommend this if you like raw seafood. 4/5 stars Chicken Karage - subpar, it consisted of 4 small pieces of fried chicken. It wasn't crispy or anything and there was no sauce to accompany it. 1/5 Spicy scallop roll - it was delicious! it ranks as one of my favorite places for the spicy scallop roll (#1 is at Sushi Miyagi) 4/5 Service: The chef's service impressed us. The waitresses were nice. It was busy so they couldn't pay as much attention to us that we liked. They did respond whenever we waved to them. Price: Tonkatsu ramen ~$12 Chirashi $28 Chicken karage ~$5 $spicy scallop ~$7 read more

Come here to be spoiled with a top quality product - sushi always on point. There are many sushi restaurants in Houston but I always return back here for redemption or when getting together with a few friends for sushi. The chef always does it right, I never need to add soy sauce to my sushi... just the right amount of seasoning and the perfect amount of wasabi. The rice is always neatly and perfectly formed. I personally think it adds to the mouth feel and taste of the sushi. Teppay is making all the right moves. I've been coming here for least 5 plus years and never had an off day. Authentic Japanese food in a nice little Uptown Houston restaurant! I was told months ago by one of my Japanese co workers to try this restaurant as one of the few truly authentic Japanese restaurants in Houston. Finally I took advantage of the New Years to take two of my staff for lunch. Wow am I glad! As a creature of habit, I like to order a chirashi and did so here too. My guests both ordered different bento boxes. We were lucky we chose to do lunch early because by noon the restaurant was full. read more

I came here for lunch time since my boyfriend usually frequents this place during work lunch. He warned me that the service is below a typical Japanese restaurant. When we went in, I noticed it was mostly Asian people, which is usually a good sign. We sat by the door but they blast the AC here so I was freezing half the time. I ordered the bento box with chicken, I thought it'd be grilled but it's an Asian fried chicken (not really breaded) that was fried too long since it was very tough. They also give you tempura, potato salad, rice, a couple of other things I'm not sure what it was. I also comes with miso soup as well. The service is okay, not the worse. They don't really attend to you and they don't clear the table of empty dishes (note that this actually helps them more than us by reducing the amount of work they have to do later!!!) Overall, I'm not really wowed, the bento box was quite expensive (~$14). I'd like to come back for sushi and update my review since that's what my boyfriend says it's good for. Pros: - Quiet setting Cons: - Service - Too cold, need to turn down the AC read more

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming... The boyf and I came here on a Saturday night at 8 and I'm pretty sure the fish was just as fresh as if we got there at 4am when fishers go catch fish! For the two of us (we can EAT), we ordered the the Tonkatsu Ramen (because you gotta try ramen at all places), the Tonkatsu Dinner, and the Sushi Regular platter ($32). Service: Service was a little slow but not to a point where it bothered us, as we sat at the sushi bar and got to watch the amazing chefs at work. The sushi chefs both had smiles on their faces amidst some deep concentration - this was warming as they really seemed to be enjoying their jobs! Food: Tonkatsu Ramen - the broth lacked flavor (I prefer Jinya) and the meat seemed a bit over cooked, but the ramen itself was good. And it came with the white fish ball decoration with the pink swirl! Tonkatsu Dinner - two medium sized pieces of fried pork cutlets. This came out super crunchy and with some sauce, rice, and veggies. The flavor of the pork with the sauce was great, and the crunch was on point. Sushi Regular - this. was. delicious! Fresh fish, beautiful presentation, fantastic flavor. This dish came with 8 pieces of sashimi and one small (3 pieces) spicy tuna roll. GET THIS!!! With excellent food, fair service, entertaining sushi chefs, and a fun atmosphere (cute wooden panels and all), this place is worth a try! read more

This restaurant is cozy, homey and it makes you feel like you're in Japan! If you have the time then rsvp because the restaurant is pretty small and it does get crowded at peek hours. It's a mom and pop kinda shop so expect the service to be slow but the staffs are nice. You know the place is authentic because majority of customers are Japanese :) Ramen (4/5) - I loved the noodles texture and the both was light and flavorful. It was not as oily as others I have tasted. The pork was cooked different than other places but it was a good thing...less fatten:) Chopped scallops and uni sushi (4/5) - fresh and delicious. Rock n roll (4/5) Clams (3) - it was decent, nothing special. Sakura mochi (3.5/5) - It was soft, warm and inside was red bean. I gave it all rating because I'm so use to the ice cream kind. Over all, I really enjoyed this place and can't wait to try the other items! read more

If you drive too fast, you'll miss it! Very small, traditional Japanese restaurant with very quality food! For non-sushi dishes, I tried their tonkatsu ramen and nabeyaki. Both had mild flavors and are good for cold weather. I'm not sure if I'd order these dishes again though. We ordered some sides, the agadashi tofu and a veggie side dish that were both really good! The otoro and uni here were very good! Very fresh and tasted so yummy! And the tamago was so, so good and fluffy. I also tried the salmon skin hand roll, which I thought was alright. It's a little too dry for my taste personally. The service there was very good when I went. They were very attentive and orders came quickly. The chef is Japanese and he looks so happy! It's nice to see such cheerfulness. Overall, this is definitely a place to stop by if you're craving yummy Japanese food! read more

The Super Secret Tuesday Night Happy Fun Time Dinner Club descended upon Teppay on 4/8/08 for an evening of new Japanese delights as it was Jigga Lee's turn to pick this week. SSTNHFTDC members LBTrippin' and Missy Sweet Tea had some plum wine and enjoyed some succulent fatty tuna, some decent beef tataki, some miso soup, and shared a bowl of unagi don. The eel on the unagi don was delicious. SSTNHFTDC members Staul Wall and Rossdaboss enjoyed some hearty bowls of ramen and other noodles, plus a scallop roll. The only complaint would probably be that they skimped out on any meat in their soup bowls... SSTNHFTDC member Jigga Lee enjoyed a nice large helping of Sukiyaki... It was a huge portion that all of us were able to partake in... Pros: Excellent fatty tuna. Succulent Scallops. Huge portion of sukiyaki. Big piece of eel on the unagi don. Cons: Skimpy on the meat in the noodle bowls. Beef tataki was ok. Service was pretty slow... particularly waiting for the check took awhile... Somewhat pricey of a menu... Overall Report: It was a decent little Japanese restaurant that has its pros and cons. read more

Nice, chill traditional Japanese place. Would go again. I had the Bento with the mackerel and a tempura app. Wife had the green tea soba. She enjoyed her meal. My fish was very tasty. Not too salty or oily. All the bento ingredients were fresh. Only downside was the service. It was not busy as only two other tables were occupied. The two women working were very friendly but I had to actively seek them out for basic services (water refill, check). Maybe that was just an off day, but if they had been just a little more attentive, I would have happily given this place 5 stars. read more

This place is a must try! I came last night with a group of 5 friends (including myself) just looking for a new sushi spot and Teppay did not disappoint. We came with no reservation so walking in at 7:30 the wait was 1 hr. We committed though. We each ordered the 8 pc Sushi Omakase which every piece was so fresh and tasty. Complimentary miso soup was solid. My favorite piece was the madai with a slice of lemon on top. I also ordered the Spicy Hamachi Roll (10/10, fresh hamachi + the perfect spice) and Beef Udon (8/10 no complaints, just not big on udon.) My friend ordered the Wasabi Shumai which we shared by splitting each shumai in half, and sometimes another half because the wasabi flavor was potent, but so good! Cleared ur nose for sure. The service was cool, but I give most of my compliments to Chef Vu. At the end of the meal he was so kind to have a conversation with us about our meal, explaining what each fish was provided, and assuring we enjoyed our experience. I can't wait to go back and bring other friends to try! read more

Let me start off with saying that my service last night was fine. I got a water refill or two, we were able to order sake once our food came no problem, had a lovely evening. The ambiance is priceless and quaint at this gem. I have never been to Japan before but I hope that this is it feels like. I was so relaxed over dinner. There is a section of traditional floor seating too. I ordered the Vegetarian Udon. Fantastic and incredibly fresh. Not overly salty. Really well done. I also ordered the fried tofu appetizer, sans fish flakes. I also thought the appetizer was nicely balanced, flavor-wise. Sushi rolls looks to be a super fair price, nigiri looked higher than market from what I remember. Our total came out to $50.01 (not including tip) for a bottle of sake, two Udon soup bowls, and the tofu appetizers. Would recommend and I will be back. read more

I'd just flown into town to visit my mother and we were stumped as to where to have dinner. Fortunately, my mother's Japanese friend was with us and mentioned that she had tried this place the night before and it was very good. We were concerned that she had already eaten Japanese food the day before, but we were assured that as a Japanese she could eat Japanese food every day. So here we came.....located in a typical houston strip mall with plenty of parking. As I entered the front doors I thought this place was very clean, cozy, and pleasant.....nicely decorated with Japanese decorative items all around....one long and busy sushi bar on one side and tables along the other side of the wall. There are also a couple of private dining rooms in the back with floor seating for about 6 to 8 people or so. .....we were told that there was a $20 fee for the private rooms.....just because of the hassle for the servers to climb in and out of the room to serve the larger parties. As for the food, my mother always likes to order way too much food, and her Japanese friend knew exactly what she wanted. I just wanted something light, but everything looked so good that I ended up ordering way more than I had expected.....like mother like son I guess. I had ordered the sashimi special and since I don't like octapus I had it replaced with more tuna. ..which was nice of them. We also ordered the chawanmushi .....which takes 20 minutes to make, the mixed tempura, agedashi tofu, grilled salmon, eggplant and bellpeppers sautéed in miso, chicken yakitori, manila clams steamed in sake and a special sauce, charbroiled whole cuttlefish with teriyaki sauce, deep fried shitake mushrooms stuffed with shrimp paste, and another dish that looked like a beef roll side stuffed with spring onions. Let's just say that everything was so so good. ...and authentic! Ok, I didn't eat the beef rolls and cuttle fish, but or friend said it's one of her favourites, my mother enjoyed everything she ordered, and I was very happy with what I had ordered. The quality was very good and you can tell the chefs are real Japanese and take excellent pride in what they do. It just so happened that the owner's wife was working this evening and she remembered my mother from a party with some of her high profile friends who ate here 3 years ago! These ladies ended up talking and talking and talking non stop! The lady owner was so friendly, sociable, and bubbly and made the whole dining experience very special. I can safely say we all had a great time. Yes, the prices are a bit high, but the quality and authenticity is what you're paying for. read more

We came here for dinner and reserved the room for 7 people ($20 to reserve the room). We ordered the sashimi platter ($32), the fish was really fresh and good. The tofu appetizer was also very good. We ordered the tonkotsu ramen which were okay. The eel and spicy scallops rolls were both very good. The eel rice bowl was good but overpriced ($25). This is a lovely place for quiet Japanese meal. The ambiance is very authentic to the old places- long and narrow, bar on the left, tables for four on the right and tatami rooms in the back. Classic or jazz music in the background where you can hear your friend or your neighbor's conversation. If you have milder flavor sensibilities, please try their tonkotsu ramen where the flavor is mostly from their opaque pork broth, soy marinated bamboo slices, and very mildly seasoned small pork steak. This is definitely not for those who love intense umami explosions found at Ramen Bar Ichi- though I like theirs too. I was in the mood for something filling and comforting, something with an Asian version of chicken noodle soup. I think I found it here. The price was $15.12 included tax. PS. I overheard a telephone conversation where the waitress was trying to answer a potential customer that they close at 2 pm and will ask the patrons to leave by 2 pm because the waitresses will go home at this time. I think due to translation, the waitress may appear to be tactless or even rude. I was looking at her face and there did not seem to be any animosity whatsoever. read more

Teppay - Sushi Bars Near Me - Houston, Texas

The menu offers a large variety of sushi, maki/hand rolls, appetizers, noodles, and rice bowls. t's definitely one of the most authentic Japanese restaurants in town. Just to give a few highlights of the food: Sushi is so mouth-watering fresh. I am getting instant cravings for the unagi while writing this review. Watching the sushi chefs in action is also very entertaining. Agadashi tofu is fresh and tender with so much umami. You get a hint of crispiness from the from the fried outer skin. When you bite in, all the flavor just explodes on your tongue. Chicken kara-age is also perfectly tender. Unlike any fried chicken nuggets, it's not greasy. The marinate also brings out the natural chicken flavors. Udon wasn't always been my favorite, but Teppay changed that. The udon broth tastes homemade with just enough flavor without being overly salty. Unfortunately, I wish the service was better. Both times I went, my bill had something on it that I did not order. One time, the server completely forgot our hand roll. It was always a pain to flag someone down to get drinks refilled. This is also the reason for the 4-star. read more

I love this little Japanese restaurant! To me, if you have natto, you are pretty damn authentic lol. I've only been here a total of two times, but the quality of food has always been superb. The sushi is amazing, and you get what you pay for. This last visit was the first time I ordered any hot food. My husband ordered a veggie udon for us to share, which I would rate as 3/5. It was a little bland, which wasn't surprising for me. I figured it would be. It's definitely good for if you're fighting a cold though! My brother ordered the tonkatsu ramen with extra pork belly, and he said it was pretty good. His favorite place for ramen is in Colorado though, so I don't think any place will ever rival that! My only complaint is that service was extremely slow. It took about 20 minutes for us to receive our check. I understand that there are large parties sometimes, but to get a print out and bring a check takes seconds. I will definitely be back when I'm in Houston because the sushi is top notch, but the service can be worked on. Might've just been an off day! read more

So apparently this isn't one of my favorites at all but it could because I am not I to the EXTREME authentic Japanese food. We "accidentally" went to this place thinking it was hibachi initially. When I had guilt and put in hibachi this came up around the Galleria area. But since we were there we said why not let's just try it. Cleanliness- 5/5 nothing to complain about. Appetizers - Tatsusa-age tuna- 3/5 meh edamame-can't go wrong with that Entree- sushi special - I think it's known for its fresh sushi and it was okay. I know that I don't value to see me as what the people who probably normally come here values. Teriyake dinner - it was a good portion of food which came with rice cabbage and a soup. It took quite a while to get there but we're still a good amount. Sushi roll - the over the rainbow roll and that was really good. It is one of your more typical sushi rolls you find in other sushi restaurants. Atmosphere- 4/5 it is a very small restaurant and so you probably will have to wait to get a seat. Our neighboring table wasn't screaming but was still kind of loud. Service-4. 5/5 - no complaints about the service since the restaurant is so small they're able to attend to you more. Food overall came out in a very timely manner. So my friend and I we didn't care for it that much. Like I said earlier I don't think we just value the more traditional Japanese cuisine. read more

I absolutely love love LOVE this place. I like the fact that this place kept the traditional Japanese roots, which is reflected upon the Japanese interior design. The sushi chefs are most Japanese, which is very hard to find in other sushi restaurants. I always come here whenever I'm craving some good authentic Japanese sushi and ramen. The soup of their ramen is very clean, no oil at all unlike other ramen places. I also love their spicy chopped scallop nigiri and salmon nigiri, very fresh and creamy! Although the price of their sushi is on the more expensive side, but it's really worth it!! All the fish nigiri are nicely cut in their thickness. Their menu has a lot of traditional Japanese tapas food, and the portions are very reasonable. The waiter I got is very very attentive, hard working and funny! So I would definitely suggest you guys to give it a try! read more
