Pros: Great nigiri Sushi, great grilled Saba Fish, great atmosphere. Good value for Lunch Special. Cons: Very disappointing tempura, oily and heavy, which is the main reason I give this place 3 stars. Also too pricy for dinner for what you get. read more

Sooo good that I couldn't wait to get home to do a review. Very very authentic! One of my favorite Japanese place in Houston! 10/10 from decor to atmosphere to service to appetizers to entrees to sushi to nigiri to drinks! What a hidden gem! Will post pics later. read more

This is a hidden gem with very high quality sushi, 5 star service and amazing ambiance! Very intimate and authentic. Been to dozens of Japanese restaurants and this is definitely a candidate for the top. The moment you get in, you get teleported into another World. Anyone giving this place under 5 stars is disrespectful to the high level package this restaurant provides or probably cannot afford the food. Highly recommended! read more

HIDDEN GEM. If you want truly authentic Japanese food, this is the place. This place is not about the "glitz and glamour" and all about the authenticity of a true Japanese restaurant. The sushi chefs are Japanese and if you can go when they have fresh live lobsters in the tank, you'll be able to get some fresh sashimi as well as having the entire lobster cooked into a delicious miso soup!! Highly recommend if you want izakaya style small plates and fresh sashimi! read more

Came here for a father's day dinner on a Saturday night. Made a reservation to be safe, but not sure if there would have been a wait time otherwise. We ordered the Aji Tataki, Sashi Sampler, Beef Udon, and Red Bean Ice Cream. I had seen some pics on yelp of the Aji, but I wasn't sure what it was, so I asked the server. At first he was confused, and he mentioned it might be on the secret menu in Japanese (what?? secret menu? apparently they have it to cater to Japanese taste buds and Americans might not be able to appreciate..?) but he quickly realized it was the Aji. The udon somehow gotten forgotten, and it ended up coming the same time as the dessert, which is the reason for the 4 stars. Overall, a great experience! read more

Best sushi around Houston IMO. Very chill nice family owned place and reasonable price. Highly recommend to anybody wanting good sushi and beer. read more

I really really like Teppay. Their sushi is fresh & food is delicious, but the service just kills everything. Water never gets refilled, waiter/waitress NEVER checks back to ensure we received everything, constantly forgets our drink. I learned to just order EVERYTHING at once but if we want something else you better remind them. I feel bad for the sushi chef because he is really attentive. I wish they really work on the service because I hate to leave unhappy with a full belly. hope to see some improvement in the future read more

Everything on the menu is delicious. My favorite dishes are amaebi and uni. For some reason these are far tastier than what other restaurants offer. All of their seafood are fresh. The restaurant is great for couples and small groups 4 or less. read more

Itadakimasu! That's exactly what I said once my platter of nigiri and gunkan sushi was delivered to me. The sushi is very fresh but I'll get to that in just a bit. I was brought here by a friend who was eager to show me the authenticity of Japanese cuisine and the freshness of raw fish. As a new Houstonian, I found it quite difficult to find a Japanese restaurant that could live up to my standards as far as service, presentation, taste, and cost (SPTC) goes. I've been spoiled with lots of good Japanese eats, ranging from $ to $$$$. The acclaimed Japanese restaurants I've attempted in this city quickly turned into dislikes and a maximum of likes, not loves. As I described to my friend what I was looking for, I was told that Teppay would possibly fit that category or come close to it. As I entered the premises, I noticed the long sushi bar and the rest of the tables situated inside the well decorated albeit simple place. We decided to sit at the sushi bar and order select nigiri and gunkan sushi as well as omakase while watching the chef prepare. It's always my favorite part to see chefs doing what they like and engaging conversation with the customer. You could quickly tell that the servers care about your experience and give recommendations so that the meal is enjoyable. We were informed of the fresh catch and were asked if there was anything specific we didn't like. Our soups and salads were delivered to the table shortly after ordering. The miso soup was to be as expected and salad light and crisp with just the right amount of dressing leaving no leaf short of sweet and gingery taste. My two must-haves in any platter are sake (salmon) and uni (sea urchin). They both were exceptional in quality and flavor. The sushi rice was not overpowered by vinegar nor hard/cold/too warm/too tightly packed/falling apart. To me, those are the very basics of sushi prep and should be executed with no issue. The rest of the fish were as good as they looked. Nothing lame, dull, or off in color or taste. The fish were a buttery mouthful every bite. While the cost of the ten piece omakase platter ($60) is somewhat higher than what I've been served even in NYC, it was the best I've had so far in H-town. I'm sorry if that offends anyone, but I look at SPTC quite seriously. I was a happy camper to say the least from this experience and I will be bringing others here to try the rest of the menu soon enough. Great job, Teppay! I'm hoping the consistency follows and all the maneki neko (fortune cats) lined up above the sushi bar area continue to bring in the good fortune and wealth! read more

My family and I used to go to this restaurant many many years ago (10+ years) whenever we wanted sushi because at that time, Izakaya Wa, Kata Robata, MF Sushi, and Uchi did not exist. Before: The food had always been okay, and the service was always terrible. Let's just say, service was nonexistent. Once the servers drop off your food, they are never seen again. Also, the owner of the restaurant preferred to write up the check and make it extremely illegible so you couldn't understand it. You'd have no idea if she was charging you correctly or not. As for the food, it wasn't anything memorable. There was a time we went, and the restaurant smelled like a restroom. It was extremely disgusting, and since then we vowed never to return. Fast forward to 2016: My dad heard that the management had changed and that the service/food were better so he suggested that we give it another try. Still a small restaurant, still busy if you arrive right around dinner time, and looked like they never bothered to remodel the place. Service was slightly better where we didn't have to wait long for them to take our order, but it took forever just to get our green tea refills. In fact, they didn't even bother to check if we needed refills. Also, the food took forever to come out. As for the check, it was legible this time, but they added up all the sushi we had ordered (6 pieces of sushi, 2 rolls) into 1 line "Sushi Bar" on the bill. My recommendation is to keep track of your sushi order and make sure it sums up to the total they have listed as "Sushi Bar" on your check. As for the food, the sushi was fresh but nothing memorable. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. So would I come back? No. read more

Okay I've been coming here for 5 years now and I have to say the food is always so damn good from the bento boxes to their ramen and soups but most of all their sushi and sashimi it's all very quality. The only thing that seems to have diminish over the years is the service, at first I thought it was just me because it was always so busy but on the days when it's not the service is still poor other than the owners and chefs which are attentive if only the service could get their act together this place would be a whole lot better read more

This review is only for the Omakase!!! This place reminds you of an authentic Japanese restaurant!!! Although the restaurant may be small, it's more intimate. The interior has bamboo style looking walls, almost as if you were in a Japanese house or tea room. It's beautiful. How do you know when you're at an authentic Japanese restaurant? All the sushi chefs are Japanese, and majority of the people dining are. As well as some of the staff. Maybe it was just that one time I went, and I guess I get easily impressed. My friend and I always sit at the sushi bar when it comes to Omakase style! This place was actually my first time doing Omakase and there's no turning back! For those that don't know, Omakase is basically the chefs choice. You're entrusting the chef that they'll make fantastic choices of nigiri and which ones will complement each other. You're trusting the chef to pick his best out of all of the common nigiris and that you'll take every bite WITHOUT soy sauce. Basically, you're not getting your usual. Lol Price varies on the amount. This places does the style where you can tell them how much you want and they'll base it off of that. There is no limit, however, they do have a limit of their fresh fish so they kind of run out of ideas to give. My friend and I got 14 pieces and they plated everything on a board. It was beautiful. Every bite was heaven. Like I said, Omakase is very pricy but so worth the money. The quality of the fish is fantastic. Plus, it's a way to try new things, rather than sticking to your usual Cali rolls. Lol Definitely love this place. If I was seriously rich, I'd do Omakase every week. read more

Service is terrible! We ordered chef's special sashimi combo and the serve just told us the price was around $40! But when we got the bill the price was 50%more than the price she told us~the price was $63! Still best in class. I've recently started ordering my sushi 'omakase', (literally - i trust you, or 'its up to you'), and letting the sushi masters that work here pick my fish for me. They give the best cuts of fish available, and it's a good way to try sushi that you wouldn't normally choose. Each time I've ordered this way I've received a work of art in return (see pictures). It's almost a shame to eat something so beautiful... almost. Just to reiterate the thrust of my previous review, do not come here expecting weird, creative rolls. This place is about exquisite, fresh, raw fish, and super friendly service. read more

Teppay Sushi is one of the better sushi establishments in Houston. I usually come to this location for lunch time on the weekdays, and I am usually pretty happy with the food quality. They have a good lunch menu which consists of a variety of meals from Tonkotsu Ramen, Katsudon, or Sushi/Sashimi. I would say, you are safe to order anything here, but avoid the Bento Box. I would give this place a 5-Star rating if their service was better, but don't expect much. I have never been here for dinner, but I will update this review once I check it out. Pros: -Value -Private parking lot, plenty of spaces to park Cons: -Service is lacking, which is unusual for a Japanese restaurant (waiters/waitresses must be friendlier, they need to clear finished dishes off the table, etc.) read more

Sushi was really fresh and delicious here and very well priced for how big of a piece you get. For sushi I recommend trying the omakase if you don't know what to get. We calculated it and you save about 2-3 bucks vs choosing your own. You have to start out with at least 6 pieces and can continue to add as many more pieces as you would like. Beware with the wasabi because they do put a little bit on top of the rice so it can be over powering if you add more wasabi to it. If you like to choose your own sushi I would suggest the: sea bass fatty tuna salmon uni horse mackerel sweet shrimp (comes with the delicious fried head) Only cons about this place is that one of the waiters did not really speak English and we had a very hard time communicating our order. read more

Good sushi, very fresh and tasty. But waitresses are pretty slow, you have to ask twice or more every time you need something. Don't order fried tempura. It was not good. I think waitress forgot to bring them out and it was sitting there getting cold. When I got my check I noticed instead of writing down what I ordered they just wrote $102.50 sushi. I prefer more detailed receipt but I just paid because waitresses were rushing everywhere. I like their sushi but didn't like their service. read more

The service was wonderful and the food was really good. This was my first time going to this restaurant and I will go back,

Solid, authentic Japanese place. Came here 30 minutes before they closed for lunch and the staff was really accommodating. I wouldn't say this is the best sushi restaurant I've ever been to, but I would definitely come back. Prices are reasonable, and they have good lunch options. I tried some sushi combo with I think 10 pieces of sushi and a roll for around $20. My momma got a salmon bento box that was pretty good, too. read more

Don't let the Skechers Outlet location fool you, because this is where you would find one of Houston's most authentic sushi places! I was honestly dubious as I was pulling into the parking lot, but all doubts were gone when I saw the decked-out storefront that reminded me of a traditional sushi restaurant you would see in movies. The interior was even more hardcore in terms of vibes of authenticity. I had a feeling that I made the right choice by coming here. However, I was a little surprised by the pricing even though I was already expecting to pay with my soul. Even Teppay's lunch menu is slightly above average without any significant discount; for example, the sushi special (8 pc nigiri and 3 pc tuna rolls) is $25 and each 2-pc nigiri order is already $6 or 7 on average. Be prepared to spend a little more than you usually do at normal sushi places! Was the food worth the slightly higher pricing? Certainly! The tonkotsu ramen ($12), the mega-classic Japanese ramen, was absolutely solid! It was not at the Ippudo level, but it was still one of Houston's most solid ramen and perhaps the most authentic choice in town. The ramen broth has a perfect amount of saltiness and creaminess that serve as a great testament to its quality that could be achieved only through a tedious slow-cooking of pork bones. The thick-cut char siu and fish cake were the main highlights that complemented well with the nice firm ramen noodle and the terrific tonkotsu broth. However, Teppay's broth is slightly lighter, which can be a good thing for those who are afraid of the richness and a bad thing for those who want a more flavorful experience. The sushi was delicious as well. My order of sake ($5.50) and saba ($4.50) was meticulously prepared by the chef at the bar before it was sent to my table, and the taste of these sushi revealed not only the heart that the chef has in preparing these few pieces but also the restaurant's high standard for fresh fish. Although the sushi were more expensive than I have anticipated, I was very happy with the quality. Overall, Teppay is an excellent sushi restaurant that wins major points for authenticity in both its menu and decor. Unfortunately, its slightly higher price is a huge deterrent for me to visit frequently. I highly recommend this sushi restaurant for you and my friends to try at least once to experience Houston's most authentic Japanese dining. --- tl;dr version: 1) Houston's most authentic Japanese restaurant 2) One of the most solid Japanese ramen in town 3) Fresh, top-notch sushi at slightly higher prices read more

This is one of our favorite Japanese restaurants (our most go-to restaurant is Sushi Jin although we love Nippon as well). This is one of the few Japanese owned restaurants in Houston (we only go to authentic Japanese owned restaurants) and is owned by a couple. The two are always at the restaurant. The wife is at the register or taking orders and the husband is usually behind the sushi bar. They are open (inside) for business, but for now there is no sitting at the sushi bar. We just got takeout here on Friday and it was delicious as always!! We ordered sashimi as well as sushi and everything was fresh and very tasty! Our favorites were the different kinds of fish, uni, ika, ikura and California roll. The ikura here is so fresh and wonderful ! When we go, we always order agedashi tofu, chawanmushi, ika teriyaki and we always have room for a mochi or sasa dango for dessert. I also recommend their noodle dishes and tonkatsu dish. Let's help out these small restaurants and keep them in business! They are really struggling. It will be sad to see them go due to the decline in business. I'm a little surprised that this place has three and a half star reviews. And when I read some of the three and below reviews, everyone mentioned how great the food was :-/ This is a solid four star sushi restaurant for me. I've been here twice for dinner and had a pleasant meal both times. Sure, the service can be a tab slow but since I'm usually not in a hurry, I enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. Also, you have two chefs up front who are clearly working hard to handmade each of your roll. Can't expect freshness and great authentic experience and fast all at the same time. They ain't sitting on their hands staring at your orders. We only had sushi and some appetizers here. I had a great selections the first time but unfortunately I didn't documented it. For our second visit we ordered 1) spicy tuna roll- 3/5 just a typical tuna roll. No spiciness detected 2) Rock and roll- 4/5 yummy, flavorful, and fresh. 3) salmon, tuna, and egg sushi rolls- our favorite was the egg sushi pieces. So much layers of flavors in one bite. 4) clam miso soup -5/5 omg! I never had clams miso soup before so I didn't know what to expect. It came with 5 to 6 clams inside the normal sized bowl. Supper fresh and well seasoned. I'm afraid this has ruined normal miso soup for me. Be aware when ordered appetizer thought. They always bring that out last for us, which defeats the purpose if you're hungry and want to snack on something first. read more

I assumed I had reviewed this place years ago. Somehow, I was wrong. After going over other reviews, there isn't much for me to add. I have always loved this place for the food and atmosphere. Yes, it's a little pricey, and no, they aren't open on Sundays (when I always seem to crave sushi!), and yes, sometimes the service is slow when they are busy. But it's worth it all. The Sato family is friendly, sushi is fresh, Japanese food authentic. There's a "Japanese menu" that's also conveniently translated into English - which seems counterintuitive, but hey, at least now I can read it :) Go and visit this unassuming little place. You won't be disappointed. read more

Been here a few times and the food has always been great. While the ramen is good, it is not usually the highlight of my meal - it is the sushi / sashimi that makes this place. It is always so fresh and they have otoro, which is the best part of the tuna. Be prepared to pay a higher price though, but it is worth it. Service is usually excellent. If you are sitting at the sushi bar, you'll get to watch the chefs prepare your meal. There is an older Japanese lady waitstaff who is genuinely interested in making your experience a positive one. read more

I was really excited to try a new sushi place that I haven't been to yet! My first impression when walking in was, this is a really small cute place. We weren't greeted right away, and there was no hostess. While being seated it took awhile for the waitress to ask us what we wanted to drink. My Bf asked her for some "unique" appetizers that most places don't have. Her recommendations were agedashi tofu & and dumplings. that was her thought of "unique". You can find those at every sushi restaurant. So we ordered the gindara which was a cod. It was really good! Sweet and just right! I wish it was a bigger piece but still good! Then we ordered the oyster butter mushroom. It seemed like it was just a bunch of stir fried mushrooms. But since I'm a fan of mushrooms it was good to me. We also ordered the softshell crab! The dipping sauce made this dish yummy! It was really small though.. Cut into 4 small pieces. Omakase- 6 pieces of chef's choice sushi. This was $29 for a few nigiris. I honestly didn't think it was worth it, I've had better at other places. Spicy chopped scallop handroll w/ ikura was yummy! :) can't go wrong with that! Spicy scallop roll- spicy. It was "okay" very plain roll. The salmon and seabass nigiri was really fresh. The amaebi wasnt my favorite. The shrimp heads were realy small. This place doesn't have a wide selection of special rolls. I probably won't be returning here anytime soon. Oishii would be a better pick for me. And also a bit cheaper. read more

I've been this restaurant about more than 10 million times. This place has no fancy dish. They just put a super fresh top notch fish on a very well made sushi rice. Not too loose not too firm. Teppay is a small yet very traditional Japanese restaurant and very well lightning. I always can see how beautiful and fresh of what I was eating. This place doesn't charge you $6 a piece of salmon. Their price is very reasonable for very well quality fishes. This place's service was little slow but didn't bother me. I have seen worse. They have the best uni in town. Sweet and creamy. This restaurant would be the most authentic Japanese restaurant I had ever been in H town. And if I go with my Japanese friends, I can also get chance to order some Japanese snacks that they only serve to Japanese ppl. The only problem to me is a little pricy. And the portion of the food is real small. For example, the slice of sashimi is more small n thin compare to most other Japanese restaurant in town. A small and rather average Japanese restaurant in Houston. Their Cawanmushi (savory egg custard) was a bit sweet, and while it had a decent selection of shrimp, fish, mushroom and veggie bits, it was missing the traditional gingko nut. My Tonkotsu Ramen was pretty average. Had a taste of the a la carte Grilled Salmon which was quite good -- probably one if the better dishes among all our items. My mother's order of Beef Sukiyaki at $26.50 was too pricey for what she got...very ordinary, and the Beef slices were clumped up, dry and chewy balls of meat. Our friend's Chirashi Sushi was only just ok. Service was adequate, but the hot green tea they served often came lukewarm. Not sure I'd rush back here any time soon. read more

This is definitely the worst Japaneses Sushi place in Houston. I am sashimi/sushi lover and have tried tons of Japanese restaurants. Yesterday friend took me to Teppay because it was blocks away. We ordered Gindara (grilled Cod), Rainbow rolls & tempera. The Gindara was overcooked & tastes very bitter. The skin part was black like coal (Please see picture I have added to the album). We told the waitress cuz it's really not edible. However, the owner came over insisted that it is okay to eat. she said just don't eat the skin part then we would be fine. That really shocked me!!! I felt sorry for her. Usually Japanese will be very nice & polite but she's definitely the opposite. With her broken English & impatience, we got disappointed & unwillingly accepted her "okay-to-eat" Gindara. aka "Gucci Sushi" I swear i flew into Tokyo the moment I walked in the restaurant... This place is legit because they serve the REAL MONK FISH LIVER and not the frozen kind from a tube. Im not a huge fan of Ankima(?) but I think they're one of the few restaurants to sell it. THe last time we were here, the sushi chef (owner) showed a guest the "Tobiyo" or flying fish from Japan that was so fresh I think it literally flew into the ice chest. IT WAS AMAZING. WE had it nigiri style and it was sooooo good...i've never had anything so fresh. I felt like Bear Grylls eating the actual fish meat off the whole fish. I also never knew there was different levels of TORO-NESS. We had the Ochitoro for 2pcs at $14 which wasnt bad. It was amazing..omg. The piece of toro was surrounded by a fatty membrane that melted in my mouth. TOTALLY LEGIT. Next time, I will try their ramen.....Moshi moshi!!! Oh and another awesome point, they have a room in the back if you have rowdy children with you...but they're charging $20 to eat in the room lol read more

I came here before an EDM event I had down the street. I remembered it from a log time ago, and ecided tohit it up again. I ordered the yellowtail, halibut, tuna, salmon, and eel nigiri sushi. Was very fresh and delicious. I also ordered the ten zarusoba: cold buckwheat noodles, dipping broth, and a side of tempura. The outcome was very saddening. Saddening in the sense that the people who I came here with long ago aren't around anymore. The flavor brought me a ways back and it was simply amazing. Monday - Saturday 6pm to 1030pm Sunday Closed Came here for another great dinner but it was the busiest Tuesday I've ever seen. Had a great Aji Tataki (a whole spanish mackerel sashimi), they fry the bones/remaining fish and it was really good. Comes with its own ponzu sauce. Friend who had the Pork Katsu liked it a lot (looks pretty darn good too! going to order it next time we come) and looks like it came with its own tonkatsu sauce in a mini bowl. Boyfriend thought his tonkotsu ramen was decent. Chawanmushi was really good but it takes a while to come out so expect a bit of a wait. They've only got 2 sushi chefs so prepare for a wait if the place is busy! Need something after all that fish?? Ice cream was good quality but you only get once scoop (get the red bean!). And one piece of mochi is $3 but it was really really delicious. We liked the sakura red bean the most. Service was sloooooooooooooooooooow bc it was just one waitress but she was friendly and refilled our hot teas...when reminded :P The place was packed! Oh yeah, this is really simple traditional japanese food. Def. not techno/disco sushi so don't come in expecting what you get from other sushi places in Houston. For me, it's all about the fish. again, sooooo expensive! Really expensive. 5/5 Enjoyed the full experience! Teppay is one of those old Japanese establishments that are not trying too hard to impress, but modestly showcasing their talent with the quality of their food. Once you walk in, you are welcomed with a warm smile by the sushi chefs and the staff. The restaurant is narrow but with enough seating to not feel claustrophobic. It can be pretty busy during rush hour, but it is well worth the wait. I would highly recommend sitting at the sushi bar, so you can see the chef's craft in front row seating. Now to the food.. Beef Tataki (1/5) Would not recommend, too chewy , but the sauce that came with it was brilliant Cha Soba (4/5) So simple yet so satisfying.
