It was my introduction to pizza..and as the years go by just like you remember your first kiss you also remember where you first learned to love the pizza and fries. The fries here are pretty phenomenal and not dried out. They also make some good middle eastern dishes like tahina ( same thing as tahini), hummus and shakshuks with some good melted cheese. It was just ok. This location is near the Aldi on California. I got the cheese thin crust. I wanted stuff crust or New York but I needed to buy. A whole piza for that. I'm glad I didn't as the pizza was very basic. It tasted very factory made. It's was very hot. But without much favor. I was able to sit down at the place which was OK as well. Tel Aviv Kosher Pizza on California Avenue in Chicago is a friendly place with great food that has a nice variety of Mexican and South American dishes in addition to the expected usual pizza shop fare. They do their dishes really well and usually deliver within ninety minutes at the slowest. The food is super good, and the workers are friendly. This is the longest running Kosher Restaurant in Chicagoland. I've been eating there for over 35 years and the consistency of there food never changes. It's definitely a favorite among the kids very easy to order and there service is friendly and nice. There menu is expansive lots of variety theres always something for everyone. I especially like there deep dish pizza, it's by far the best kosher one in the city, other favorites are there Cheddar Fries, Fried Cauliflower and there tuna melt. It's mainly vegetarian but with the inclusion of eggs & some fishes that Jewish people eat. Everything is Kosher, dude. No really, it is Kosher. Their signage indicates pizza but I wouldn't say that's their biggest draw. The offerings are either cheese or with veggies. $2.25 for cheese or $2.95 for veg slices. The taste: Slices with a pastry crust and easy sauce. Suits the style with a clean taste which isn't heavy. It's mainly ordered by passers-by (because they offer slices) and Mom's ordering a quick pie for their hungry family after school. They also offer pizza puffs in veggie or cheese. Alike one reviewer commented, I've often seen a Rabbi sitting in the corner booth switching from English to Hebrew from conversation to conversation. Hebrew when business is being discussed. Many of the diners know each other or pass regards as they come and go. The place hosts neighborhood folk and transients alike. It's food when you need a meal. If I was eating with someone that had strict dietary restrictions I might bring them here. Kind of looks like a dated Jewish delicatessen. Except there aren't any deli meats. read more

This review is based on an experience from over a year ago so this place may have improved so it may be worth a trip if you're in the area. Had gone here with a friend who keeps kosher to share a pizza. I vaguely remember the restaurant kinda creeping me out since it was so bare rather than your typical restaurant. On the flip side, the pizza was very good. Thin crust, veggie pizza. It was a while ago but not much different than your typical pizza joint except that it has no meat options which is fine by me. On a whim I decided to call up Tel-Aviv and order a small cheese pizza. The man taking my order on the phone seemed angry. "OK, come pick it up!" When I got there, everyone was eating nachos, pasta, french fries, and other assorted greasy fare. Nobody was eating pizza, though, and I got a bit worried about my choice. I got more worried when the surly man behind the counter asked me my name and what I ordered, right after I told him "I ordered a small cheese pizza, for Lee" He sulked into the kitchen, and a moment later was asking again what I ordered and what my name was. When I repeated the information a third time, the cook looked at me and screamed "YOU ORDERED A LARGE CHEESE!" Instead of arguing and waiting for another pizza to be made, I decided to just take the large. The surly man came over and mumbled the price, opened the cash register, and slapped a quarter down in front of me, all without looking in my direction. How did he know I was going to give him fifteen dollars exactly? My wallet wasn't even out yet. "This had better be good," I thought to myself. Well, it was. Damn good, in fact. The cheese was salty and bubbly, the crust was light and fluffy, and there was a lot of garlic involved. I've been going to Tel Aviv ever since I was a lower case m. Their fried cauliflower is among the best in the city and yes, kosher pizza can be very good and is at Tel Aviv. Their pasta is also very good, just don't go looking for an authentic Italian experience because unless you count Israel as being a far east extension of Italy. This has always been an option of last resort. Kudos for bringing a shuk like atmosphere to west rogers park. I came in wanting a pizza slice for 2.00. I see "extra ingredients .25" and order olives. A dollar is added since on another part of the menu there is a caveat of "veggies 1 dollar extra". I take out my credit card and am told there is a $15 minimum. As I turn to leave the guy says, "just get fries and we'll make an exception" I get fries and magically my total goes up to 7.50. I've lived in and around west rogers park all my life. I don't keep kosher but i have a few friends who do, compelling me to eat at the neighborhood's small assortment of kosher restaurants several times a year. Tel Aviv has cruised along in its odd mediocre niche for at least twenty years now. Incredibly, the place seems to get a little worse each sucessive year, while somehow remaining a step above truly bad. The decor? Harsh fluorescent lighting and cafeteria style tables, alongside cozy looking booths that are ripped and stained from years of neglect. So it's a diner with character, is it? Nah, not really. There's nothing endearing about the neglect. There isn't a colorful cast of regulars on hand - it's mostly deserted after 8PM, apart from the surly delivery guy n one booth and the sullen man behind the counter. True to its ambience, the food on hand is greasy and cheap. And a few random items are somehow tasty year in and year out - i will always be a sucker for the Luny Tuna Sandwich, a tuna melt where the bread appears to have been fried. The falafel is passable (much better next door at Taboun). The pizza puffs are curious misshapen but greasily satisfying. However, I MUST caution the public against experimenting with the "Pizza." In Chicago, a town famous for pizza, there's no excuse for Tel Aviv's sad attempt at pie. Thin crust with zero crunch, soft as white bread toast, the cheese tasting closer to Kraft than mozarella, all bathed in an odd garlicy oil that leaves a sour aftertaste. Want vegetable toppings on that? No problem; they'll peel the cheese up from the pre-made pies they use for all orders, throw some raw vegetables underneath, and set it in the oven for two or three minutes. As others have noted, the staff seems angry and confused, as if they were tricked into working there against their will. what's up with that? Two stars anyway. Hey, they're open till 11 PM in that boring, family-centric neighborhood. And they do a few things passably - that Luny Tuna, the hummous/falafel sandwich and/or platter, and an oddly flavored but not terrible macaroni and cheese. Skip the pre-frozen fries and onion rings, by the way. if you must have a side order, go for the nachos. read more

Tel Aviv Kosher Pizza is unimpressive from the outside. In fact, the sign is so dilapidated that the first time I passed by I assumed it was out of business. It looks like your typical run-down burger and fries joint sans burger or any other kind of meat but inside it's surprisingly clean. All I've tried so far was the pizza but that was enough to make me want to go back in the very near future. The pizza was thin and though it wasn't the tastiest cheese I've had on a pizza, the crust was perfection. The very bottom of the crust is crunchy in the most satisfying way - not in that dry, crackery crunchy way. I did feel weird for being one of the only non-Jewish people in there but I'm getting used to that. Oh, it's also cheap! I think it's about $2.50/slice and $8 for a whole pizza. read more

I just moved to this area and while browsing through the areas offerings on Yelp I ran across this establishments reviews and decided I'd give it a try. I have to say I was totally underwhelmed by the experience. I had 2 slices of cheese pizza and it was almost totally flavorless. The crust while cooked nicely tasted as bland as cardboard. The cheese was equally bland and boring. The only part that had even a hint of flavor was the sauce and that was bordering on bland too. I can understand why folks who are eating a Kosher diet would eat here since it is a Kosher restaurant, but since I'm not one of those folks I'll gladly go to just about anyplace other than returning here. I know there's a Subway nearby and I'll have to check that out and see if they serve pizza there since I know they do in some locations. If so that would be a hundred times better than this place. As far as the service goes I found that also to be underwhelming. I wasn't treated badly, but it was the most neutral interaction with restaurant employees I've ever had. I dealt with both a man and a young lady and both of them did thier jobs while never once even trying to fake a smile or welcoming words. I'm really amazed this place manages to stay open. I've heard there's a pretty large Jewish population close by so I guess it must be those folks who are on strict Kosher diets that keep this place afloat since I can't imagine most non-Jewish people choosing to go here. While the pizza was bland and boring and so was the service there was not anything bad other than the blandness so that's why I'm rating this place at 2 stars. If there'd have been any negative flavors or negative attitude it would have gotten a 1 star review from me. Unless you're on a Kosher diet I say save your money and go someplace else. If you're on a Kosher diet it probably would still be a good idea to search on Yelp for other Kosher restaurants where you'll probably get more flavorful food and warmer service. read more

This restaurant is the grizzled veteran of Chicago Kosher establishments. The food is excellent, the prices are cheap, and the owner is the best. If you come regularly Moshe, and Georgie in the kitchen are like family. The food is prompt and fresh. The thin crust is the best in town. If you are into lighter fare the chef salad with tahini dressing is the best value in town at $6.50. The greasy stuff is also good. Cheddar fries and Fried cauliflower are legendary. The Israeli and the mexican dishes are outstanding as well. If you are in Chicago and you want some cheap eats stop by. If its not on the menu and it doesn't have meat in it ask Moshe and he'll make it for you. read more

Being a long time customer, i love when i have a chance to pop in Tel Aviv. One of the owners Moshe is the nicest you can be. He is Either In town Or in Israel. I just came here with my daughter for the first time. She loved the pizza and the cheese on the fires. My father order a eggplant Parmesan and loved it. PLEASE BE CAREFULL the plate its cooked in is VERY hott!. I always order the nacho cheese delux,melted. I like to call it a self service place since its recommended to clean up your own dishes. The WORST experience I have ever had. The owner took my large catering order and then delivered it 3 hours late, which ruined my event. When I talked to him on the phone while we were waiting for the food he gave me so many lies and yelled at me when I called him on it and hung up on me. He said they delivered it to another location and then he said that I never placed the order in the first place. To my surprise, when I got my credit card statement I see a $220 charge. I then called and talked to the owners brother, Moshe, who was no help at all and hung up on me. They won't refund me any money and I'm just blown away. I have been to this place numerous times but I had such a great experience yesterday that I had to leave a review. I needed some quick supper for the kids and I hopped onto their website from my phone although I see you can also download the toast tab app. Every time I go I see improvements, nice to see the soup du jour listed so I can choose, I was very happy they had cream of cauliflower, one of my favorites. When I went for pizza I selected their recent addition, New York style, because I know my kids like it. The option to add 1/2 a topping is astounding, some of my klds love mushroom, some prefer plain. And it's great to be able to select the pizza sauce (rotev) in the notes. Then, to my surprise, I saw they added something new, cheese filled crust. I was excited to try it so I added a pie to my order. I selected a few sides, ordered, and picked it up around 20 minutes later. Brought it home, surprised the kids with the new pie and had lots of happy campers. I would also offer the opinion that its location on California is not the nicest, and also is hard to park at. So pretty much, poor quality food and service. There you have it. Went down to Rogers Park to visit some friends and stopped by to get some pizza. The slices were a perfect size. The marinara sauce pepperoni and cheese had really good flavor. We really enjoyed this place. The customer service was excellent and everything came out really quickly. The fried cauliflower was excellent as was the chimichunga. The pizza puff was ok but didn't blow me away. My daughter loved the onion soup and my son enjoyed the Mac and cheese. In terms of being dirty, it is kind of a greasy spoon but as long as you understand that it won't freak you out. I do think they could clean the bathrooms a bit better. Some great food here that I crave. Falafel balls are amazing. Shakshuka is off the chain. Chili burrito is pretty darn great. The Pizza is good most of the time but sometimes it'll be jacked up. For example; almost no sauce or crust is too thick or its way overdone. It hasn't stopped me from coming back many many times because when they're doing it right it's really good food. The service is also great 90% of the time. Tip: if you order a pizza extra thin it'll usually be amazing. read more

This is my first time here. I ordered the shakshuka and although I've had it many times in many places, including Israel, I must say this is some of the best I've ever had. Delicious sauce with the perfect herbs and spices. I wish the pita were better but this is generally what you get for pita in the States. My companion ordered a felafel sandwich and it looked really good, packed with falafel balls, fresh veggies and good tehina. I heard it was excellent. The ambience could be improved, including a wiped clean table. I would definitely come here again and try their pizza. They even have gluten-free versions. They also offer Mexican items like chimichanga and I could see their cooks look Mexican so that part of the menu is another thing I would try enthusiastically. read more
