I've been caught off guard! I came to Tejas craving a burger. As I browsed the menu on the wall, I saw: NEW Birria Tacos Lately, I've tried to get in touch with my feelings. As part of this effort, I admitted that I've had a crush on birria. So I ordered the birria. When I bit into the taco, I felt that feeling deep down as if I just had just scratched an instant winner lotto ticket. I thought to myself, I'm at a burger place - don't have high expectations for the birria. Tejas overachieved. The hot, smoky, seasoned, shredded deliciousness blew me away. Their birria tacos was better than most Mexican restaurants / food trucks / stations wagons carts. It was just great. Now, I can't wait to go back and get more!

The statement taped to the counter in front of the register explaining the 15%service fee

We have been here w few times and always enjoyed their burgers, and assortment of other options on the menu. The green onion aioli is top notch, and always our dip of choice for the yummy fries and crispy golden tots. Tonight we went and as we were sitting there enjoying our food, my husband mentions that he can't understand how the 3 of us got the bill to $70, before a tip. I stop eating, turn around and take a quick peek at the menu, do some math and agree, no way did we spend $70. Mike never gets the receipt despite me telling him to do it every time we eat out... Just in case something happens to the order. Because he didn't get the receipt, I let it go, secretly thinking that's what he deserves for not getting the receipt. But apparently now it's bugging him, so he goes up and gets it reprinted. Turns out , they put an automatic "15% gratuity fee on top of the check, in lieu of tips". As Mike is standing there waiting for the receipt to reprint, he does see the paper explanation of this service fee taped to the counter, which he pointed out to me and I snapped a pic of. So I do definitely have a problem with this autogratting of anything, let alone 15% of the bill, which turned out to be $8.62. there are so many reasons why I a problem with that. First, as a restaurant manager, I have seen servers work their butts off in a full service place and get stiffed. Second, as the posted statement says, this is for all of the staff in lieu of tips. Tips are earned, as I have heard a million times in my career... You don't get to just tack them on to a check to compensate the employees. There were 3 of us, with tax, our bill before the service fee, was $61.00. this was for 2 burgers, 1 hotdog, 3 fries, and 3 drinks. Not cheap. Yes, it's good, and yes, we like to support local businesses, but $61.00 for that tells me (because I do understand food cost and such). The owners are still making a nice profit. So the employees should be getting a fair wage for what they do. The owners should not be passing the labor cost on to the customer. So yeah, I am pissed, and no, we won't be back.

The service was very friendly. The fries and tots are very good, hot, and fresh. Most burgers you put your own toppings on. We got a 1/2 lb smoked burger which wasn't our favorite. It's very thick and quite smoky, our thoughts on this are strictly preference opinion. Also got a single smash burger. It was already topped with the toppings of their burger sauce, lettuce, cheese, onion, pickle, tomato. I did not love the burger sauce, it was ok, the burger itself was good but quite messy. The restaurant was a little warm even with their 2 mini splits running at 65°. Also for 2 burgers, fries, tots and 1 drink was $43.

Steel wire in party or in burger itself.

I tried calling a few times before creating this review. I also called tejas bbq assuming it was the same company/owner and was then told they were a totally separate company. Unfortunately, as I got about halfway through my burger, I was stabbed in my gums by a 2 inch piece of steel. It appeared to be some sort of wire from a wire brush but a thicker gauge than you would typically find. Alert to owners to take a look at your equipment or cleaning supplies to see what this could be from. Luckily I did not swallow it. I have the physical hazard if you would like to retrieve

Always good food. Service really depends on who you get. Great location near farmers market and festivals. There are several places nearby so you could even do a progressive dine. Try their BBQ venue as well! Also very good.

Hungry for a burger on a Saturday afternoon, my partner and I decided to stop here. The line was short, and the food came out quickly. However, the burger was very underwhelming. It just tasted like a standard burger. Something I could make at home for half the price. Same thing for the tater tots. I wanted a milkshake but couldn't stomach spending $6 on one. It's a cute place, but I don't plan to spend any time or money here again. Come back to us Mel's... My favorite part was the pickles. They're sitting near the drink counter in a self serve area.

This is one of my absolute favorite spots and whenever we have guests from out of town this is the spot we always take everyone. Hands down we get told every single time it's the best burger they have ever eaten in their lives and the shakes are sooooo good. Two thumbs up.

"Custom Built" with smokehouse patty and Caesar topping. I added pickle and onion from the fix'ns bar

We LOVE Tejas BBQ and aren't really in this area regularly, but have been wanting to try their burger joint........and it is the essence of a "burger joint." Small a bit squeezed dining area. Get in line and order first then seat yourself. Cashier gal was delightful, pleasant and patient with us,......I mean "me," as first timers trying to figure it out. She recommended the Smokehouse Burger, but since my wife had already ordered that, I wanted something else. She recommended the Custom Built option since I'd get the "smoked patty" as a base. I opted for the Caesar. Service was fast and friendly. Fries were really good. The "smoked patty" was definitely the way to go. I wasn't so in love with the Caesar topping, but the burger meat was seasoned and cooked to perfection. I was a bit jealous of my wife's Smokehouse Burger with bacon and cheeses! They have a serve yourself bar with fix'ns. We'll be back when we are in the area. Yummy!

My friends, I'm torn. I've been here. A few times now. And the food has always been solid. Every time. Before this weekend, I would've 4-5 starred this place. Then this weekend happened. So we come in around 6ish, myself and two friends of mine. We all have masks on. There's no sign on the door, none of the staff are masked or gloved, none of the patrons are either. As dumb as our state government is, I understand that within the law, it is then up to the choice of the establishment, and then the individual. As commons sense as it is to to do the right thing, I accept that folks can choose to do the other thing. I can and have lived with this. My friends are expecting, so we wore masks at all times when we were not drinking or eating. Here's my problem. Don't stare at me because you make dumb choices and I don't. I paid, I can eat however the F I want. You don't like masks, fine don't wear one and end up at the hospital, or putting someone else in there. But don't stare at me and my table because we're doing the right thing, and playing it safe. We were getting the mug for some time, and I stared right back. They weren't in a shortage of tables, and we have manners. No reason for that. So very uncomfortable and rude. Beyond that, food was excellent as always. I don't care where you live or what you do, there's common sense ways to protect yourself and your community. Work on that, and customer service. If you choose not, then you don't need my business. Best of luck in the future.

I ordered the double patty burger adding a 1/2 order of fries and a small chili too. By the way this is a table service restaurant. They say the individual beef hamburger patties are 1/3 lb. but they sure look more like 1/4 lb. in weight to me because they are really thin. You probably want to get two like I did. The burger was tasty and I enjoyed it. Also the french fries are homemade and taste like it. Why can't more restaurants have fries like these rather than the frozen out of the bag kind? The 1/2 order size is large enough for 2 people to share. Finally their chili here is legit. Yummy! There is no doubt that this is a quality burger and fries eatery. Add in the chili and you will be happy when you dine here. My only negative is the price. No combos here so you pay list price for each item. With my double burger, 1/2 order of fries, small chili, drink, tax and tip my lunch was about $30. Yikes!

Walk up and order at the window...very friendly gentleman took our order and gave me a beeper and pointed out a big cooler with ice cold water and cups if we were so inclined...my cold Shiner Bock hit the spot though. It's all outdoor seating but covered with fans so very comfortable. When we got our food...from a very nice lady...I knew it was going to be great. I ordered the jalapeño burger and my son the regular cheese burger and we split an order of fries. My burger was awesome and good sized. Smash type patty cooked perfectly with very fresh veggies. The fries are fresh, hand cut and oh so good! 5 star friendly service, excellent food and a great atmosphere made this place a new favorite spot. If in the area hit 'em up...you won't be sorry!

"Friday Night Catfish - Live Music" 02/20/26…read more I decided to give this place a try since I've been passing by it for a while, always wondering if it was any good. I'm glad I finally gave in to curiosity. This spot was already jumping on a Friday evening around 6 PM. They had live music, a solo artist singing and playing guitar, and the whole atmosphere felt lively and upbeat. It gave me "Urban Cowboy" vibes in the best way. The southern hospitality was definitely there. It's family-oriented, pet-friendly, and apparently Friday nights are the only time you can catch them frying up catfish and shrimp. Customer service was a mix of good and just okay. The lady taking our order was polite, but not very friendly, maybe she's just not the best with social skills. You walk up to the outside window to order (like my husband and I did). We were told there'd be about a 45-minute wait, which we were fine with. They gave us a pager to let us know when the food was ready, and luckily we found a table in the packed dining area where we could enjoy the entertainment while we waited. We sipped on margaritas on the rocks and took in the scene. I was honestly surprised at how good they were, especially with the Tajín on the rim. Delicious and strong. Now, the two female servers were the real highlight. They were friendly, down-to-earth, and very attentive, checking on us periodically. One of them even refilled my margarita cup free of charge to make up for the wait. I loved their high energy and bubbly personalities, and I will say: it ended up being well worth the wait. When my husband brought our food to the table, it was piping hot. We both ordered the fried catfish and shrimp dinner, which comes with French fries, hush puppies, and a salad. For some reason, we were served crinkle-cut fries instead of their usual authentic-cut fries, aka "crappy fries," which confused us a little, but it wasn't a big deal. The fish and shrimp were fried to perfection, crunchy, succulent, and full of flavor. The shrimp tasted fresh with that ocean-seafood flavor. The fish tasted a little less fresh to me (slightly on the stale side), but it was still good overall. Complaints Pet-friendly: They allow dogs and cats to roam around the dining area while customers are eating, which is just not my cup of tea. I get that it's outdoor dining, but not everyone enjoys animals up close while they're trying to eat. There was a dog roaming and sniffing guests, and a cat doing the same. Luckily neither one made their way to my table. Another complaint is the styrofoam plate issue: Our dinner was served on a styrofoam plate without the paper lining to keep the hot food from melting into the styrofoam. I don't mind styrofoam, but please add the liner, especially for hot fried food. We noticed other customers had the lining, but we didn't. Maybe it was just a slip-up, who knows. Food Ratings Catfish/Shrimp Dinner: 5/5 Fish: 4/5 (fried to crunchy perfection and piping hot, but didn't taste as fresh, slightly stale) Shrimp: 5/5 (crispy, fresh tasting, piping hot) Hush puppies: 5/5 (crispy outside, moist inside) French fries: 4/5 (not the authentic cut, but fresh and hot) Side salad: 4/5 (fresh lettuce and tomatoes, but a very small portion) Margarita on the rocks: 5/5 (delicious and strong) Overall, Tailgate Grill is energetic, upbeat, and serves up some seriously tasty fried catfish and shrimp, especially on a Friday evening with delicious tasting Margaritas to top it off. The atmosphere is inviting, the food is mouthwatering, and I tore my plate up! I definitely recommend this place if you're craving southern fried catfish and shrimp. One last tip: bring cash to tip the hardworking servers; they were tag-teaming it and taking care of a packed crowd with smiles on their faces. Great job ladies!
