You can just stand there and watch the baked goods churning around in the back. You can order prepared foods from a wall menu, or the various baked goods they have on display, combinations... they are there to patiently take your order! Even if the place feels industrial, we're talking Newark, so. Of course, custard cups are still as amazing as ever. I got another of their wonderful desserts - bolo rei, was it? - rich and dense with raisins. Wonderful. And arrufada de coimbra, a bread roll topped with coconut, just to try something different. Like I said before, I have an urge to drive back, but this time it's not just for the pastels de nata. It's for all the things. Love Portuguese food so much we spent a few Weeks earlier this year in the country. Was in the area for an event and was excited to try it. First off, place is very nice inside. My coworker recommended we try this bakery. It's been around for a while now but he said they have expanded the inside of the store. It use to be smaller. He told me to get the Natas belem. They are small custard pies baked in a nice flakes crust. They are really really. I bought two and wish I would of bought a box! I also had the bolinhos de bacalhau with Swiss cheese in the middle. Pretty tasty I got them warm but probably would of been Better hotter. I than had a bifanas mini molete. It is a small pork sandwich. The pork was Marinated and soft. Tasted very good and juicy. I'm glad they opened this new branch right off of highway 1-9, which makes it convenient to grab a box on my way to/from Newark airport. A box of dozen ($18.95) makes great food gifts for hosts and out-of-town visitors. Box of half dozen is $9.99. I recommend getting a dozen as me and my husband can easily polish off those in 2 days. We re-heat the tarts in an airfryer to crisp up the crust and warm the center and its as good as the day we got them. The ladies at the counter are also very nice and sweet. They get super busy during the holidays. We came in the morning of Christmas and the line snaked through the whole store, probably an hour wait. Regular days are fine. read more

I was at the nearby stadium watching a game and walked to this bakery for a small breakfast and coffee to put something on my stomach since the game I was at had no concession stand. The cashier was unable to speak clear English, so when I ordered a small coffee, I used my finger to explain just 1. Then I ordered a pastry asked for it to be hot and took a seat. When my number was called, I walked to get my food and seen two cups of coffee and explained to the other hostess near the pick up counter and said I only ordered 1, so she instructed me to go back to the register and request a refund. That wasn't a problem. However, my pastry was like warm, so I ate half and wanted to take my son the other half so he can enjoy it but make it warm so it has a better temperature than I had and the hostess took it to the back for about 3-5 minutes and returned but my pastry was the same temp so I asked her to re heat it and she was hesitant so I just said nvm and just left, I felt that my treatment was poor because I was overcharged when I gave clear instructions and the lack of care to my request when asked for my item to be reheated, i understand it's a predominantly Hispanic area but it felt racist and I tried not to take it that way but it was hard not too when I explained my experience to someone else and they agreed. This Teixeira's location is the holy grail, where they pump out all the bread to send out all over northern jersey. It's fantastic, find yourself a parking and get inside. The ladies are great behind the counter, they normally all speak English really well too so communication is never an issue. They've got all your Portuguese staples and then some. From pastries and cakes to sandwiches and breads. I stopped in with my mom the other day and with 20 bucks we left with a bag full of treats. Fresh bread, fresh delicious Portuguese croissants. I like these better than the French sometimes because they're dough-ier and when I'm feeling like indulging on carbs, I love to dip it in a fresh coffee and enjoy. I also got a savory bread baked with cheese and ham and it was to die for. They warm it right up for you until it's toasty perfection. Portuguese Pasteis De Nata! This was a trek to the middle of nowhere for these little creamy rich delights. Having recently had the urge to hunt down the best of these Pasteis De Nata's I was led to Newark and a familiar name for such. This version was very good, missing only slightly in that the sweetness profile which could have been a little more amped for my taste. The crust was thin, flaky and buttery as a crust should be. A perfect container for the custard in the middle. It would have been better if they were warmed slightly before they were served and topped with a little cinnamon or sugar to add to the taste profile. Still these Pasteis De Nata are great! A rainy Sunday morning included a 10 minute lineup for these and other bakery items at Teixeira's. I'd hardly call this a restaurant bakery given the sparse seating but the shop was clean and everything looked fantastic. Portuguese items, chocolate frosted donuts, artisan French breads, dinner rolls, Italian style cookies, etc, there seemed to be much variety in the output which was a bit unexpected. There was a line to point out what you wanted and another to pay. The counter staff were nice and pleasant, as well as efficient, from what I saw. I'm not sure what else is nearby to visit outside of Teixeira's but if I'm ever nearby, I'll be sure to visit again! read more

Oh for the love of beautiful egg tarts aka pastel de nata aka pastel de belem... This is THE place to go to for the flakey, custardy goodness in handheld form. I am guilty of not being a fan of this kind of pastry for the longest time because I loathe burnt stuff and I don't like burnt sugar, but this...THIS changed my dessert world. It can be hard to communicate with the staff in English because most of them only speak Portuguese. But it is certainly not unimaginable with all the translation apps nowadays, and they are very friendly to read the translation on your phone or direct you to the lady who speaks English. The pastries are delicious (though some of them can be a bit over for those who do not have a sweet tooth), especially the egg tart! I cannot get enough of them, and you should try it out! read more

Most customers are in and out within 15-20 minutes. It was also difficult to communicate and ask what each item was. - Service: 3/5 Ate everything else before I could get a photo... so besides the service, the food was delicious! Empanadas can be heated up for you or packaged cold to go. It was crispy and flaky and the $1.50 price can't be beat. Egg tarts come in $7 for a 1/2 dozen and were melt-in-your mouth amazing. I've never gotten into Chinese Egg Tarts. Of course, you could argue that I've just never had a good one, but to me the crusts always seem to be lacking in buttery goodness, and the custard too overtly eggy. Then I tried a Portuguese Egg Tart from Joey Bats at the Queens International Night Market. Served warm, its crust was so buttery and flaky, it was almost croissant like, and its bruleed custard filling was rich and creamy, with only the barest hint of egg. Okay, so it was a little too sweet. But still. I was officially smitten. So when I realized we could stop here right off the 1 & 9 on a recent Jersey day trip, I was all over it: So yeah... Hubby, kid, and I wound up grabbing a bunch of portable eats to sustain us while on the road. This included a savory brioche-like pastry, layered inside with Ham & Cheese, and another with Chorizo, plus large Torpedo-shaped potato Croquettes stuffed with Chicken and a much smaller one featuring Baccalau, aka Salt Cod. Keeping in mind that we ate most of these at room temperature, they more than satisfied. But the Chicken Croquette that I warmed and crisped in a 350 degree oven at home was so much better. We also stowed away a bunch of small Rolls in the freezer for sandwiches. But what about those Egg Tarts? Well, first of all they come in both Lemon and Classic flavors, but honestly, I couldn't taste much of a difference. That aside, am happy to report they are every bit as delicious as everyone says! In a perfect world though, I'd be eating a hybrid Egg Tart composed of the less sweet custard from here, and the more airy, buttery-licious crust from Joey Bats. Mmmm. Know Before You Go: Service, per our experience at least, is inefficient AF. There seems to be a system in place, but it's slow. We waited almost a half hour to place our order at about 11am on a Sunday. Labeling of items seems to be inconsistent, so it's tough to know what everything is. While waiting in line, kill time by scanning through reviews for suggestions on what's good. Bottom line: Every time I'm in Jersey, I'll probably be scheming to stop in Newark. This location is slightly more accessible than the one on Ferry St, as it is less busy and has more available parking spots. I ordered a dozen pasteis de nata, which are creamy, flaky cups of perfections. The outside pastry is very flaky and buttery, while the egg custard practically melts in your mouth. They have a bunch of other pastries and breads available that I would also love to try. This bakery is spotless and has plenty of friendly and helpful employees. Growing up in Newark I took for granted how easy it was to find great custard cups and Portuguese rolls. Now living in California, I always look forward to visiting my family in NJ, both to see them and of course enjoy some deliciously authentic baked goods from Teixeira's Bakery! The custard cups are absolutely perfect. My college friends always looked forward to visits from my family because that meant delicious custard cups were also coming. When my roommate TJ heard they were coming "Oh god..." was all he could mutter. When my parents moved out of Newark, they even got our American neighbors hooked on custard cups; our neighbors' toddlers also look forward to my visits because there are guaranteed custard cup deliveries! I love bread, but Portuguese rolls are one-of-a-kind. I grew up on sloppy joes prepared on Portuguese rolls; they were the backbone of my lunch through most of elementary school! A toasted, buttered Portuguese roll with a glass of soymilk is my go-to breakfast when I visit home. Really, anything on a Portuguese roll transforms into something infinitely better. Growing up, whatever we had for dinner would quickly be put into a Portuguese roll and it always resulted in a delicious sandwich! My parents don't live in Newark anymore, but fortunately both of these Portuguese staples can be stored for up to a week. Throw the custard cups in the fridge and freeze and the bread, and you'll never be without these gifts from the culinary gods. read more
