Fried haddock dinner with onion rings.
    Courtney M.

It has been a few years since my first review of Ted's, so since it just reopened for the season I took a trip in. First, the decor hasn't changed a bit. Still so dated, and dark. The dining area has no appeal. I will say that I do appreciate how many tables they have, and the seats are of good size. Even with so many tables, you don't feel crammed. I also appreciate that they have a section where you can grab extra paper plates, to go bags, and a water fountain to refill your drink. The staff was friendly, and they had the dining area super clean. Well done! Now, let's dig into the main event, the food. I ordered the special of the day which was baked or fried haddock dinner for $14.99. I chose to upgrade to onion rings, and ordered a drink as well. My end total was $21 and change. I was given a number and a buzzer that would buzz and light up when my food was ready. I only waited 10 minutes, if that. I was stunned at the portion of haddock that I was given. Very impressed. I always used to complain that when you ordered a dinner here, you got mostly fries or onion rings and only a tiny bit of seafood. I will give them props, I felt like I got my money's worth. A equal amount of fish and onion rings. Could it be that Ted's was finally listening to their local customers? Unfortunately I was let down by the flavor. This again has been a long time issue. I split my dinner with my other dining guest who had a chicken tender dinner. Everything was so bland. The only thing on the plate that had any flavor was the coleslaw. I don't think they use any sort of seasoning at all. Even after salt and pepper, still bland. My onion rings were a bit on the soggy side. The French fries I tried were crisp, but again, bland. It's so disappointing seeing that the lack of flavor and passion in their food. Such potential not being used. If you are looking for geriatric food, or a hospital food flavor, then you'll love Ted's. However if you are looking for some Maine seafood I'd skip and go elsewhere. I'll be back in another 5+ years and see if there is any improvement then.

One of our favorite stops had closed due to seasonal hours, so we decided to hit some other locals places. We were thrilled when we found the Fisherman's Catch last year and decided to go back again this year. We were seated right away and served not too long after. The staff is friendly and attentive. The upscale shack-like atmosphere is on point. We love their lobster paper towel holders that are suspended from the ceiling. I can say that the seating inside is comfortable but I have not been able to try the outdoor seating. So far we have tried the scallops, clam strips, fish sandwich, clam chowder, the fries, the coleslaw, and I'm sure I've forgotten something else. We have been very pleased with everything. When visiting in-season, it's best to get to the restaurant before 5pm. Parking fills up and the line can get long. In late October or early November it is much easier to get a table. Try this place once and I can guarantee you'll be planning a return trip.

The meal was absolutely delicious. The service and people were super nice, that includes the server Ani and the kitchen staff. The restaurant and bathrooms were clean and fresh. I'm excited to return here some day. What a great meal.

I did a similar meal at street & co as I did scales - oysters and scallops. I enjoyed the scallops slightly better at scales but this was still a win. And the octopus! Don't be afraid of that order, it was outstanding. We also sampled desserts and I was blown away. I wish I could go back more often, another phenomenal meal in Portland.

What an amazing dinner! Everything was perfect from start to finish…read more The space is beautiful. It's down a cobblestone alleyway, and the interior is cozy and rustic. It feels like a secret, but I know it's not a well kept one! Our server Nico (apologies if I've misspelled that!) was wonderful. He was friendly and helpful when we made our dinner choices. The other servers were also always on top of keeping our table clear and our water filled. The food was absolute perfection. We started with a salad and grilled octopus. The salad was bright and acidic which paired perfectly with the best octopus dish I've had. It was so tender and delicious, I've never had octopus that was that tender. The grilled flavor came through immediately, but never overwhelmed the delicate flavor of the octopus. For mains I had sole francaise and my husband had bone in monkfish. The sole was melt in your mouth good. It was lightly breaded and cooked in a pan with brown butter. It was so toasty and nutty and coated the green beans and simple, but perfect, red potatoes it was served with. My husband's monkfish was fresh and perfectly toothsome, served with fluffy Roman gnocchi and romesco sauce. My only regret is not having enough room for dessert because I'm sure it's incredible as well! I can't wait to return the next time we're in Portland. Just to note: this is one of the least accessibility-friendly areas of the city. The old cobblestone road that it's located on is foot traffic only. The closest approach is if you're dropped off at the end of and it you would still have a short distance to travel. There is a brick footpath on the sides of the cobblestone road that is slightly smoother, but still not ideal. Earlier in the day I was able to navigate the street okay on foot so it will depend on your capabilities. That being said, I took my motorized travel chair down there in the evening and Street and co were happy to let me fold it up and store it near the door.
