If fried fish on a hot dog bun isn't enough to bring you in, I'm not sure we can be friends (no disrespect intended to any Vegan-Americans). The fish was exemplary. I wanted to respect the local culture by getting the preferred chili sauce. The sauce was great yet I still cling to the belief that fried fish should have tartar sauce. I enjoyed the fries and cole slaw. The service was excellent, contributing to my successful Capital District World Tour, where I was able to enjoy small town vibes but reachable by public transit. read more

The fish was wonderful! Crispy and hot! We are tartar people so ordered it on the side. (they messed up and drenched one of our parties fish with tartar sauce, so they redid it and put it on the side. No problem!) Let me tell you the onion rings are wonderful as well! You should upgrade to them!! The fries are pretty standard fries... they did say they could do some different things with the fries and it sounded like those would be good to taste. And the coleslaw is just OK Most of the employees seemed to be pretty nice. However, they were training a girl at the front and she was getting frustrated I believe. She really snapped and was very crabby with a customer. I felt sorry for the lady trying to buy a gift card. No one apologized to the lady or seemed to try to tell the new employee that that wasn't OK. A little later they brought the new employee back toward the bathrooms to help her learn how to check it out and she was pretty crabby then. I know it's hard to learn a new job and somebody should've tried to be empathetic towards her - - or maybe they had and I just didn't see it. Well, I would go back if I was ever in the area. Hopefully that employee has since moved on. read more

I am actually shocked I have never reviewed Ted's. At least this one, which is my most frequently visited, near my job, and the OG location. I love Ted's. Ted's is consistent, dependable, not mass produced fast food. Albany is lucky to have this local gem. Fish fry like this is unique to the Albany area. For lunch, I enjoy the lunch special, tartar on the side and a cup of New England (order it just like that). The long fish filet is perfectly cooked and flakey on a hot dog bun, the fries remind you of a drive in, the Cole slaw is great, perfect tartar, it's a great meal. I also love the fried clam dinner, clam strips with all the same fixings as the fried fish on a similar platter. Passionate review incoming: The New England Clam Chowder is to die for. Are you looking for some of the BEST clam chowder in the area, look no further. Okay, maybe it's not the best (for everyone), or fanciest, but it's damn good. I generally have high standards for food, and Ted's is just so nostalgic, it's infamous and deserves the title. Ted's NE clam chowder has no frills, it's not packed with seafood, but it is a chronic craving for me. It's THICC, creamy, has a strong onion flavor, packed with clams, house made everyday. You can tell it's made in house daily because sometimes it tastes slightly different but NEVER in a bad way. I truly can't think about Ted's without having an immediate craving for it. It may not be gourmet, it may not be your favorite, But I will argue my case that this is one of best fast casual places in the area, and I don't think many people would refute. Ted's is an INSTITUTION. read more

Ted's Fish Fry - Cheeseburger Combo with Loaded Fries - Seafood Near Me - Watervliet, New York

I've never had a bad experience at any Ted's; they are all great but there definitely is something special about this location and love to stop in when we get the chance. Looking forward to my next visit! Never a disappointment! Food is amazing, atmosphere is typical of a Ted's and the service is super fast! read more

Disgusting! Was in line and another customer called out mgr in food prep area that was counting & distributing cash to employees while also prepping food (without gloves). Mgr got annoyed -said 'whatever! Give him his money back!' I also left. For some reason NY doesn't consider this a health code violation but I do. Been going here over 50 years and while service has gone downhill the past few years, this was final straw to not go back. read more

First impression: this place smells awful, like bad fish. Decided to order anyway because we were so hungry and didn't have time to find another place for lunch - it ended up being a good decision to stay because the fish and chips was damn good. Not fishy at all. The chips/fries were crispy yet fluffy, the fried fish was massive in comparison to the bun and was very tasty! I'm guessing the bad fish smell came from something besides what they were cooking - so they should figure out the source asap. My friends weren't so brazen and ordered the chicken sandwich, which was not great, and even the owner came by our table and said no one orders the chicken here! read more

Driving home yo Delmar, I get a craving...for something more than the big box restaurants of Glenmont. I'm on 787, thinking I can get my BF to stop at Ted's in Guilderland on his way over. I ask Siri for the number, and she, in her AI wisdom, tells me the closer Ted's is in Watervliet. I'm practically there!!! I call, show up in 5 minutes, and my food is ready! Consistency: they seem to have perfected it. The fish was excellent, fries and NE clam chowder very good. (Equal amounts clams, onions, potatoes) I substituted the onion rings for their Cole slaw, which I don't like. The tartar sauce, cocktail sauce and even very interesting catsup seem all homemade(maybe there's a catsup shortage right now?) All great. This time I tried the desserts, which I have to say were just okay and pretty small portion sizes. But go for the fish, clam chowder and onion rings and you won't be disappointed! A shout out to the Watervliet staff: young lady on the phone was very patient and polite with me ordering from memory (sounding like an idiot) Rest of staff helpful and cheerful at 8:30 PM. (They close at 8:45) Looking forward to returning as they have picnic tables, & it's "April-summer, 2021!!!" read more

Wow. I can't believe the attitude I got tonight when ordering my food. I've been going to this location for over 40 years and have to say their service tonight was inexcusable. I ordered food for my a wife and myself. I asked for tartar on her fish and chips. Then ordered a fish fry. I didn't say what save yet and sage told them tartar which i cannot eat. I said chili please the look and snotty reply to the cook staff about changing to chili was wrong. I also ordered a plain hamburger. Well that was wrong as well had onions on which my son doesn't eat. She then thanked the person in front at me for their order. Got mine and she said here is yours. Yup. I won't be back for a while. Too many great options in Vliet now. read more

If you were to come to this location of Ted's Fish Fry first you would think this was a dying food establishment and not part of a thriving mini-chain of top notch fried fish and fried this and fried that fast restaurants that provide courteous cheery service in an almost-clean environment. I guess you can say I grew up on Ted's Fish Fry. In the 50s, my parents would bring the family to the only Ted's, at that time in Watervliet (probably known as Port Schuyler to the locals). Yes, there were other places that also sold fish fries, and we frequented all of them, but today Ted's is the only one of the "originals" that still is standing. During those early days there was nowhere to sit inside a building. These were drive-up stands that took your order and delivered your food at the same window. You then either ate your food in your car or sat at one of the few picnic tables nearby. That probably also explains why Ted's and the other fish fry businesses were only open during the Summer months. Not unlike the ice cream stands of today. Today's visit was unplanned. Being somewhat in the neighborhood, with two other alternatives having fallen through, I took the opportunity to follow through on a desire to re-experience Ted's onion rings with the plan to compare them with other businesses that are high on my preference list. As usual, there was a line of customers at the window placing their orders. True to fashion, the line moved very quickly as the most senior worker, who I've probably seen for more than 50 years, took the orders and barked them out to the line cooks. Mine was rather simple: one chili, small ring. The "one chili" was understood to mean a Fish Fry with chili on top ($4.85) and the "small ring" ensured that I got a small portion of Onion Rings ($2.90) instead of the larger portion if the boss had simply said "rings!" As you can see, these people are experienced professionals! Typical to our area, the long piece of breaded fried fish was served on a hot dog roll. The fish was nice and hot, flaky with a crispy coating and on a fresh roll. The coating might have actually been a bit too crispy. The chili is only on the portion of the fish that fits in the roll. If you want chili, or some other sauce, for the ends of the fish that extend well beyond the roll, you can ask for extra sauce since there are no self-service stations that have sauce. The onion rings were not overly greasy with just a light breaded coating partially flaking off portions of the medium-wide, thin rings. I've decided that they are OK, but I believe I prefer the ones sold at either Country Drive-In or Harbor House. Those are thicker and wider. read more

I had a little learning to do in regards to a NY fish fry, apparently it's a thing . Ted's has been around for a very long time and has several locations in the Albany area (maybe more?) Anyway, a fish fry is a long piece of flaky fried fish served with a hot dog roll, cocktail and tartar sauce, and in my case, fries and cole slaw. It was crunchy, light, and super tasty. Good spot!! read more

I dunno, maybe I am being a bit chintzy because I worked up in New England. What it is and what it isn't. Well it's fried fish on a bun with a mediocre tartar sauce. We were hungry and in the hood. I have been to the Ted's on Hoosick Street many times, but this was my first time at this one. I ordered a fish fry, onion rings, fries, and a chocolate shake. The fish fry was delicious as expected. It was crispy, light, fresh, and flavorful. In addition, the onion rings were great. They were crunchy and light with excellent flavor. Also, the fries were good. They were flavorful, but they could of been cooked a little longer. Finally, the chocolate shake was great. It was creamy, tasty, and wasn't too thick. Ultimately, Ted's is great and probably has the best fish fry there is. read more

Like Avis and Hertz, this is the #2 best fish fry in the tri-city area. I love the fish, but the tarter sauce doesn't match, and kind of ruins it. But I recall having the best cheeseburger. If the fish doesn't turn you on, don't completely give up on here. Great shakes to match. This was my Ted's go to place, and it may be the original. Oh, the onion rings, OMG. Super efficient and speedy service. I like the seclusion of this area. A good stop over on your way to Troy. read more

The fish fry is something I don't think I will ever understand. Don't get me wrong, I love fried fish, but I don't understand the need for a boring, bland hot dog roll. And the weird chili sauce (ketchup and sweet relish?). My downstate childhood might be showing with a statement like that, hah. I will say that the serving of fish is quite large and served fresh and piping hot. It's a good value in my opinion. I usually just pick the bun off. Ted's loses a star for not having a sauce bar though. I assume it's this way so condiments aren't wasted but sometimes you just want to serve yourself some ketchup for your fries. Or some tarter sauce when you realize the chili sauce isn't your thing. Bob and Ron's in Albany is great in this regard. I saw they had mini hot dogs on the menu and had to try their take on a 518 specialty. They were good but I found the meat sauce was bland and didn't have enough bite. The highlight of the meal was the homemade onion rings, which were crumbly, not too greasy and just good. I do like the ambiance of this place. I felt like I was stepping back in time, and you can tell it's an institution in Watervliet. It was jam packed on the Friday evening at 6pm when we dropped in, with mostly people in the 55+ category. I kinda love places like that. read more

Would have been better if the cooks in the back didn't laugh at the quantity of food ordered. The cashier was amazing and handled everything nicely. I'm usually more into the british thick-battered sort of fried fish ...that's what happens when you spend 7 years in europe I guess, but damned if this place hasn't made an impression on me regardless. Everything I've had here is solid. The hotdog bun thing is silly as hell, but whatever. I guess they just put it under there to soak up the oil that drips off freshly fried fish. At least, that's what I'm guessing it's for, I didn't grow up in new york. That's not unique to Ted's either, seems like anywhere I get fried fish does that nonsense around here. Whatever, it's just a regular hotdog bun that ends up right in the bin where it belongs. Right next to that weird chili sauce stuff new yorkers eat. Cocktail sauce (which they do offer, just ask) or nothing at all - either is a fine choice. Back to the fish. It's quite good, and so are the clams and shrimp and fries. Hell, you don't even NEED sauce for this stuff. That said, the real superstars here are the onion rings. Granted, they're not really "rings" - more like just long slices of onion breaded and fried, but they're absolutely SPECTACULAR and go well with pretty much anything. read more

It took me a while, but I fell in love with this place. For 8 bucks, you can get a fish fry (a piece of fried fish on a hot dog bun) and an order of cheese fries. The fish is fresh and delicious and they fry with canola oil so it doesn't feel heavy or greasy at all. One thing I will note is that the fish comes with this red chili splashed all over it. The chili is ok, but I think they put too much on. Same with the tartar sauce if you order it that way. So I recommend that however you order your fish, get your condiments on the side. They also have chicken fingers, soup, burgers and dogs, and other fried seafood like clams and oysters. There is always a line at the counter at Ted's, so I'm not the only one who finds this place exceptional. read more

A Fish Fry is to Albany what a Cheese Steak is to Philly. I went to Ted's during my visit here and I just can't believe what kind of hoopla a piece of fried fish in a hot dog bun could create. I mean it's not a big, hearty meal like a Cheese Steak can be. There's no controversy over slices of Beef vs chopped or what kind of roll is best, or Cheese Whiz vs regular cheese. None of that, just an elongated piece of Fish in a hot dog bun with Tartae saucwe. Cocktail sauce or whatever topping you choose. But it works! Whenever I'm in All Bannie, the first thing and last thing I want is a Fish Fry. they are cheap and I probaply can eat 3 or 4 of them without blinking, but it's a simple pleasure I love. Ted'. s is located in a little town called Watervliet, a quaint, rustic upstate little town that provides a nice country vibe. Ted's also sells Hamburgers, Fish & Chips, Calamari, Onion Rings and other items for a reasonal price. So if you're ever in these neck of the woods, check them out. read more

This place is a hot mess. The staff is so unprofessional and act like they can't wait until their next cigarette break. While I waited for my onion rings they literally screwed up the three orders in front of mine. And they asked me three times what I ordered over a four minute span. Get it together! Every surface in this place feels greasy. The actual fish frys are nasty so I don't eat those. Not a fan. I literally live less than 400 yards from this place and this is only my second time coming here because my first time (2 years ago) was such a bad experience that I promised myself I'd never go back. I had a crazy craving for onion rings so I thought I'd give it another go today and sure enough, nothing has changed. It may have even gotten worse. The onion rings were actually a B+ but the experience, service, and overall environment at this place is just sad and gross. Never again. How is this place even in business? read more

Of all the Ted's locations, this is definitely my favorite. I ate there just the other day, and it was amazing. We ordered a few cheeseburgers, fries, onion rings, and calamari. Now I don't like fish fry much, but the rest of their offerings, I love. My favorite part of my dining experience there, is listening to them call back the order. Most of the time the person who takes your order will talk in what I call the "Ted's Lingo". For instance, a fish fry = a fry, a french fry = a french, onion rings = o ring, or sometimes just ring. It just makes it that much more fun when you are ordering, especially once you learn the lingo too! Now keep in mind, it's a fish fry, so everything is greasy, so if grease scares you, don't bother coming here. But, if grease is ok with you, you'll be please, I'm sure. The fries are crisp, the onion rings are as well, and they are so golden. They have quite the variety for a fish fry, and I find the prices are great. read more
