The spam was a good addition and the egg was cooked perfectly. The sauces on top made it very tasty too. The shrimp rice was like a deconstructed sushi plate and I was totally for it! Great flavor on the shrimp, and loved that it came with some seaweed on the side. And my top choice for our visit was the caramel apple bingsu!! Omg this was so good! The service here is definitely on the slow side. It took about 25 minutes for two orders of fried rice--and I was the only customer in the place. At one point, I honestly felt like I had time to run out, grab a smoothie from Blenders, and be back before the food showed up. The food itself is good, but the wait just doesn't feel justified. It's like watching a kettle boil on low heat--eventually it gets there, but you're stuck wondering why it's taking so long for something so simple. What's odd is the guy running the place moves like he's in fast-forward--zipping around and clearly hustling. He's super friendly too, which makes the slow service even more confusing. The patbingsoo is definitely the highlight--cool, refreshing, and totally worth it if you're not in a rush. I haven't tried the late-night menu yet, but if it's the same pace, just plan to settle in. Today we discovered Teddy Rice - an unassuming, yet bright and modern Korean Fusion restaurant in Isla Vista near the UCSB campus. WOW. Living in LA we are spoiled with the variety and quality of Ethnic and Ethnic fusion, yet we were floored with the food. Absolutely outstanding flavors, beautiful presentation, extremely reasonable prices. Standouts were the Spicy Tuna Rice (a deconstructed roll complete with nori sheets, soy sauce and wasabi, avocado and jalapeño slices and pickled ginger) and the decadent Pork Belly Quesadillas, served with salsa and sour cream). Ask for the Buldak Hot Sauce for an extra kick! The new KFC ( Korean Fried Chicken) burger was excellent as well. Don't miss the mango snow bowl if you still have room. Outstanding. Bonus: If you're looking for a late night snack, there is a wall of instant ramen you can make yourself. The service was great and Teddy (yes, there IS a Teddy) is a passionate personable chef who cares about quality and plating. This place could easily rival established restaurants in LA. I LOVE pat bing soo (Korean style red bean snow bowls) and I have always wanted a place in town that sells them. So I am SO excited that not only does Teddy Rice sells them, they have the OG version with milky ice, red bean, condensed milk, fruit, rice cakes, the whole package! I dare say it's better than most I have had even in KTown especially for the value and authenticity. I mean, I have been there twice in three days, and plan on going back again within the next week! The second time I went to Teddy Rice I also got some food, the omurice and spicy tuna rice. Both tasted quite decent especially for the price point and location.
