Carlos is awesome because he actually communicates with you. He'll give you his opinion on how clothes should fit you. Other tailors I've been to barely speak, rush to pin you, then you hope and pray your clothes will fit well. Carlos makes sure you get what you want. If you are not satisfied with his work, he will fix it free of charge. The only downside is that with all these great Yelp reviews, his shop gets BUSY. Especially on Saturdays. If you're reading this and thinking about going to Techys, PLEASE don't be that guy/gal who brings EVERY shirt you own to be altered. The reviews here are all good for a reason, Techys was a great experience. Carlos and Elizabeth are really kind and professional and run a fantastic business. When I came in with my dress, everything fit well, but I didn't see that the bridal shop had gotten blue chalk in a couple places on the dress. Carlos saw them and got them taken care no problem, as well as creating a beautiful bustle for my dress. He walked me through a couple different designs and gave his recommendation on which would look best (I totally took his advice and it came out perfectly!!!). They got it done really quickly, and the dress looked gorgeous. I 100% recommend them. I initially contacted Techys before the pandemic. When my wedding date was postponed, I reached out by email a year later and Elizabeth was so kind in responding and arranging for me to come in for a fitting. I wanted to create more curves, so Carlos and I discussed taking in the hips and the thighs. I was afraid I might not be able to sit or dance if I had the dress altered in too many places so we agreed to add the bustle and take in one part, and then we'd see if more was needed in the next appointment. I received a quote for each change before anything was done. Everything was done in less than a month and the dress fit like a dream. My dress had a ton of detail and beading and you couldn't tell it was altered AT ALL. Carlos is a wizard with alterations. Since I went in solo for my fitting, Carlos had me record a video showing how to pin the bustle for my bridesmaids. The price seemed steep but I'm told that's typical of wedding dress alterations. He never tried to upsale me, and made recommendations but was completely fine with whatever I wanted done. I can't say enough about how great the dress turned out. read more

I had a short dress, bought in a size larger than I needed, with only one strap, made smaller in the waist, shoulder strap (only one), and other areas of the dress. It had a ruffle, some embellishments around the waist, a zipper on the side, etc. that made this harder to do, especially since my bust is larger and the rest of me is smaller by porportion (130 lbs, usually a size M but I bought a L dress that was really huge, since the M had a small bust measurement). They did a great job, since it was tough to make the dress look right with the bust fitted and the rest of the dress flowing out like it should, also with an angle to the seams on the dress being what it was "supposed" to have as the way it was made. Two fittings and we got it--I wore it for my anniversary dinner a month later! Their prices are a bit higher but worth it for great service, a completely competent way of doing business, and a thorough job. My dress was on sale, but I have worn it several times with compliments, because they made it look even more expensive being altered correctly in the end. It was unwearable otherwise. My most recent batch of clothes I had Carlos tailor included a pair of slacks and three shirts. As usual, Carlos did an outstanding job on all of them! This place is phenomenal!!!! I came here after seeing the reviews on Yelp (very accurate reviews). I live out-of-state, but frequent the DMV area due to work. I am the type of person that loves my clothes to fit me, so I am also at different tailor shops often to get my clothes altered ... with that said, as soon as I came into this place, I felt welcomed. Time was taken to make sure the length of my jeans were correct, and that I was happy with the length and how it looked on me. I also asked to get my measurements for a suit and Carlos and his wife both took their time to get every measurement that would be needed to have my suit made. I have not received my jeans back yet,but the overall experience,attention to detail, and their sincere passion to ensure that I was pleased prompted this review. Best tailor in the DMV There's a reason why Techys Tailoring only has positive reviews. A couple weeks ago I brought in two suits that I bought off the rack needing some alterations. To break it down: hemming and tapering both of the pants, taking in both of the jackets, slimming down the arms, shortening the sleeves and length of overall jackets. But the main thing I was worried about was that one of my suit jacket's shoulders was slightly too wide on me and the last tailor I went to messed up one of my jackets completely attempting shoulder alterations. It's the most difficult alteration for a suit and it was a good way to see if this place is the real deal. Carlos explained everything to me in such a way where I was able to feel at ease. This was the first time I went to a tailor who understands that communication and comfort is #1 with their clients. There have been many times with other tailors I would walk out skeptical, worried, disappointed, etc. This time around, I felt confident Carlos would deliver flawlessly. Two weeks later, I come back today and I try both the suits on. As expected, impeccable. My search for a tailor is over. From now on, I'll always be going to Techys Tailoring for my alterations. Techy's Tailoring is fantastic! I found them on Yelp and after reading great reviews I decided to give them a try. I had purchased 2 blazers that needed to have the sleeves shortened. One of the jackets also needed work in the shoulders. After meeting with Carlos, he gave me a couple of options. I chose the one that fit my budget, which didn't include work on the shoulders. Carlos went above and beyond and fixed the shoulders anyway for the original price he quoted me. And the job was done several days ahead of schedule. I was so impressed! I ordered a custom suit for my wedding through an online retailer based out of NY. After my "first fitting," they referred me to Techy's (based on Yelp reviews) to have their recommended alterations completed. Since this was my first custom suit, I didn't know exactly what to expect. Upon walking into their shop, I was given a friendly greeting from Elizabeth who gave me a quick overview of their process (i.e. estimated pick up time, payment, etc.). Within the first few minutes of speaking with Carlos, the tailor, I got an immediate sense of the experience and professionalism that he has. For example, after I described the recommendations the retailer provided, Carlos humbly explained to me why some were "way off" and others were "close." I could tell that he was envisioning the final appearance with consideration to my comfort and not just giving me a cookie-cutter consult. He walked me through some of my options and wasn't trying to force any particular style upon me. Despite the snowstorms shutting down the area and his own personal emergency (DUDE GOT A NEEDLE IN HIS EYE!!!), he was able to finish the alterations on time. Carlos and Elizabeth were a dream to work with! After receiving a ridiculous $1200 quote to have a hem and bustle done on my wedding dress, I was lucky enough to find Carlos! He explained while some tailors charge by the name on the tag (the dress was a designer dress) he would simply charge by the work involved - fair and honest business! Additionally, his work and work ethic is second to none. Instead of simply shortening at the waist, the easy route, he painstakingly went ruffle by ruffle along the bottom of my very complicated dress because as he put it, "it was the right was to do it". The tailor I'd used for over 10 years sadly got sick and passed away, so for the past year or so I have been looking for a new one. I am 5'1", have to get the majority of my clothes altered, and I have many items that are not inexpensive, so having a good tailor is key. After some bad experiences elsewhere (see my other reviews), I found Techy's, and I'm very glad I did - I just wish I had found them earlier. They're just a little tricky to find - they're in the Area Safe & Lock building on Mount Vernon Ave., but the entrance for Techy's is through a glass door on the Helen St. side of the building, and they're on the second floor. I was a little taken aback when I first walked in, because Carlos looks very young - I thought "how can this guy possibly know what he's doing?" I shouldn't have worried. Carlos was very pleasant, and really spent time asking what I wanted and explaining his recommendations - it was immediately clear that he knows his stuff. Prices were quite reasonable, and they don't make you pay up front like many tailors do. When I returned to pick up my items, he had me try them on to ensure that I was happy with everything. And I was - everything was perfect and just as we'd discussed, and he even managed to fix a silk dress that another tailor had screwed up, which now fits perfectly. The only slight negative was that because he's busy, the turnaround time for my items was 3 weeks. But I'd much rather wait a bit longer for quality work than have someone rush to produce sloppy work just to get it done faster. And he actually called me several days before my items were promised to let me know they were ready early. One other thing to note - as of now, they are cash/check only, though Carlos said that they're hopefully going to be able to start accepting credit cards soon. read more

Have been putting off getting several pants and a few other items tailored because I couldn't find any decent places nearby. That search is over and I will go nowhere else for my tailoring needs! I dropped in unannounced and they graciously worked me in between other scheduled fittings even though their door says by appt only. (Hot tip: Call to schedule an appt to help them out!) They got me fitted, pinned and on my way in under 20 mins. I couldn't believe the tailoring for my dress pants were only $15 - $25. I've spent 3x that for shoddy, slow work before at other places And to top it all off they rehemmed a dress and a blouse while I was getting fitted with my pants for FREE! This place is AMAZING. I have taken two sweaters to Techys for reweaving issues. They do a fantastic job and I am very pleased with the final results! The service is very professional and friendly. I like how I am greeted and how my items are handled. They tell me the cost of the repair when I drop the item off, so there is no question about what I owe them when I return. They also tell me when the item will be ready, which may be standard operating procedure for most tailors, but Techys is true to their word. Their shop is inviting! Carlos is an excellent tailor for men's clothes - not only can he cheaply knock out basics like pants and shirt resizing, but he's successfully reshaped suit jacket shoulders for me, reshaped wool sweaters, fixed shoddy work by previous tailors, and even added side tabs to suit pants based off pictures I sent him. I am confident that if Carlos says he can do something with a piece of clothing, he can (or that he'll try, and if the alteration doesn't work he'll return it to its previous condition at no cost). His shop runs quite efficiently now with the new office staff; know ahead of time that he'll take a couple weeks for significant alterations, but that they'll be done no later than the date specified on your receipt. I've been to most well-reviewed tailors in the Alexandria area, and Carlos is the only one I return to. read more

After the first visit I felt comfortable with how he discussed the details of the alterations and decided return ahead of picking up my first drop off. He gladly accepted. The bridesmaid dress had a lot of structure in the top section where it needed to be taken in, which I was initially worried about.
