Carlos did a WONDERFUL job on the alterations for my wedding dress! He basically made me a new dress with all that had to be done. He was very meticulous and I loved that he paid so much attention to detail. I knew my dress was in good hands and it turned out perfect. He listened to what I was hoping to do - cut the train off, decrease the fullness of the skirt - and he executed everything well. I liked that Techy's did a consultation for free - Carlos pinned things and made adjustments and then Elizabeth was able to let me know how much everything would be. They then said if I wanted to go somewhere else I could get another consultation but come back if I wanted to, but Carlos seemed to knowledgable and experienced, I canceled the appointment I had later that week somewhere else. We had the most incredible experience at Techys. They are SO professional and so accommodating. My partner had his suit done there and Carlos talked him through the changes he wanted while really listening to his preferences and then also giving us his professional opinion on some of the changes and was really knowledgeable. I had no clue what my wedding dresses needed, I have a ceremony ballgown and reception dress. I know a lot people say this, but I don't leave reviews unless the service was atrocious or incredible. This case is very much the latter. Techys Tailoring was hands-down a beautiful experience for tailoring my wedding dress. Elizabeth and Carlos, the wife-husband duo, are a matchmade in heaven for quality service and product. Timeline: 10/10. The completion date I gave was Oct 21. Granted, I went in ~4 months earlier, so expedient service was not something I needed to request. I can't speak to what my experience would be like if I asked them to rush my order. They are appointment-only due to their high demand, so I highly recommend that if you want your experience to be as stress-free as me and 98% of these other customers, you give yourself sufficient time for them to help you fit your timeline into their schedule. Customer Service: 10/10.* What can I say? Elizabeth has the voice and patience of an angel and every time without fail she'll offer you a chilled beverage while waiting. She's diligent on contacting her customers for upcoming appointments, re-scheduling, cancellations, delays, and anything in between. I've witnessed customers give them flowers upon showing up for an appointment. She greets you with a smile (not that it's required by any means), is apologetic about the smallest things, and just fulfills the customer service role better than most people working in it. Carlos is just as patient and kind with any questions I had about style, design, costs, or simply aesthetics. He never made me feel dumb for asking a question or bothersome for requesting something to be adjusted by 1 inch. He overexplains and takes great care in handling every item you give him. He folded my veil every time it was packed up, whether I took it home or not. He knocks before entering the back room. He gave tips on how best to zip up my dress. He bustled and un-bustled my train numerous times each session just to make sure I was satisfied with how it looked. They are the sweetest people in the tailoring industry you'd ever meet. *The very small and slight comment was wishing that I was informed greater than 1 day out from my last fitting that it was re-scheduled. However, it was due to an A/C issue that they had no control over, so no harm no foul. Transparency: 10/10. Not only does Carlos take the time to explain anything and everything, he is up front about being okay with customers browsing around and shopping elsewhere if his style and their prices don't suit you. Before making any alterations he checks with you if the prices are okay if you ask, and will suggest many other options if your goal is to trim down some costs. Elizabeth does a fantastic job at breaking down in your quote and final receipt what exactly it was you were charged for. Honestly, it's a better breakdown than what my venue gave me. (No hidden fees). Their honesty about finances makes me much more willing to spend because I have no doubt about whether the alterations "actually cost this much". It doesn't hurt that their kindness, charm, and care win you over. Quality: 10/10. I took my dress home totally, absolutely, wholly elated. If that's not detailed enough, Carlos worked with beading on the body and skirt/train, tulle, a satin/chiffon underlay, horse hair fabric in my skirt, hemming, strap shortening, torso sinching (that had boning), a LONG train, re-positioning of lace, kept the raw lace edges of my train, and made me a completely custom veil and comb (that many other customers have supposedly also asked for). As I said before, he gives recommendations throughout the try-on so if you're not too confident on what you want, you won't have to make these decisions alone. Location: 8/10. It might be a bit confusing to get to their shop, as it's on the second floor of a building that's mixed with a doggy training studio. You have to find street parking. Understand that while it is a hugely successful business, it is still just a husband and wife working there, and their dream to open up a tailoring business after their own wedding could not be more impressive. Value: 8/10. I went in knowing that wedding dress tailoring was going to be expensive no matter where I went. I would have rather paid a larger sum to people who cared about my personal things and ensure its proper handling every single time than leaving it up to chance, even if that was the bridal shop itself. It was worth every penny and the cost is reflected in the service, quality, and overall management. Recommend?: ABSO-FRICKIN-LUTELY. Please note I did not have my wedding dress 'customized', but rather, 'tailored'. Even so, I'm confident that if I wanted my dress to be personally detailed Carlos would have 1000% succeeded and Elizabeth would have kept track of every bead that was shifted on that dress. Across a long life, I've rarely turned to a tailor. Perhaps I would've, more often, had I encountered one with the talents of Carlos--the man behind "Techy's." I sew, myself--and regularly hem a cuff, mend a seam, or replace a zipper. But recently, rehabilitating two eBay "bargains" that landed in my closet would've been well beyond my skills: (1) A ladies' couture padded jacket from a high-end Chevy Chase boutique...it was in a heavy, rich fabric--and awkwardly constructed to fit no one. Every dart, seam, and sleeve would have to be recut and sewn. A weave pattern to consider. Plus, decorative piping everywhere. Total makeover. (Donate it and be done?) (2) A vintage Neiman-Marcus black-leather aviator jacket--a "wow" piece of tasteful style...in exceptionally thick and supple leather. Rare. But it also sported hyper-padded, 1940s shoulders, out to heeeeeeerrrre. The shoulders would have to be trimmed, their padding reduced...the sleeves re-set...and the lining restored. :-/ In the end, I decided they were both worth the price tag for tailoring, and--after scanning the area and reading reviews--settled on "Techy's." Carlos did a masterful job of delivering me two luxe jackets, fully worth the price of my investment. But what particularly distinguished the work here: Carlos' ability to see, and communicate, different approaches to a project--rather than aim merely to execute a client's direction. I know I give more 5 star ratings than others but I ONLY give ratings when it's worth my time. That said, looks like everyone else is giving 5 star ratings here too so you know it's warranted. Now for the good stuff: I realized I needed to have a bustle added to my wedding dress with only 3 weeks left before the wedding. I was panicked thinking no one would be able to fit me in on such a short deadline. A designer referred me to Techy's so I called on a hope and a prayer and Techy's was more than accommodating. Elizabeth is so kind and she fit me in right away with a promise to get the dress back to me 2 weeks. Carlos, who is also wonderful and I can tell is an absolute perfectionist, gave me several different options when I dropped the dress off. It was ready within a week and a half but when I went to get it, I decided (again at the very last minute) that I wanted 1 other alteration. Carlos offered to do it right there on the spot. Plus he even went as far as to order me a bigger bag for the dress so that it wouldn't be smashed in the smaller bag it came in. The five star reviews are all warranted here. I was slightly annoyed at first that it's by appointment only but now I think that's the way to go. Both times I went in for my appointment, there was no wait and they took me back right away. Elizabeth is so kind and welcoming! She always offers me a cold beverage when I get there which is a nice touch. Carlos did a wonderful job on a jumpsuit I needed hemmed and taken in, it was perfect! They were also very upfront about the cost (which was as extremely reasonable) and the time it would take to get it done (also super reasonable). I had a bridesmaid dress that needed to be hemmed and taken in around the bust area earlier this year. I was set on going to a place in Old Town based on location and reviews I read on Yelp. At the last minute, I decided to get a second opinion from Techy's. I wasn't in a time crunch, so I had time to check out a competitor...and I'm SO GLAD I DID!! Techy's service and quality far exceeded my expectations. At my appointment, I was thrilled to find an actual changing room and a separate fitting room (where you meet with the tailor) that were both private and quiet. Carlos spent time with me assessing my dress and what needed to be done. He offered his professional opinions about how much the dress should be shortened and how tight the bust area should be. He adjusted my dress a few times to show me how it would look with various changes. He deferred to me for the final decision since I'm the customer, but I gladly took his advice. I felt the experience and wisdom behind his words and i saw no reason to go against it. Techy's price also blew me away. I was expecting something really pricey like the other tailor, but it was only half the price!! He had an idea of how to take in the dress that was different than the other tailor. It was a much more simple and easy change but with the same end result, so it cost a lot less. I was so happy by the price and Carlos's thoughtfulness and cleverness in finding a solution that was cheaper for me and less work for him. When I picked up my dress, it was perfect.
