This teahouse inside the SF Tea Garden is probably the closest to the type of botanical cafe you'd see in Kyoto. It's small but so aesthetic and serene! Though it was busy, we were able to secure a shaded spot on the side, overlooking the lovely garden. We ordered 2x iced green tea, chicken karaage, and udon and they did not disappoint! Especially paired with the tranquil atmosphere and views, I was definitely brought back to Japan.
Right at the center of sf Golden Gate Park's Japanese Garden. This spot is always crowded so be ready for the wait. While it is nice to sip tea at the garden the quality of the food could be improved.
Amazing serene views with yummy Japanese food/tea. Dishes (ranked by best): 1) Sencha Tea: allows free refill 2) Red bean mochi: not too sweet and texture of the mochi is perfect. Feels like it was made in-house 3) Udon: just ok, not spectacular 4) Chicken Karage: not too crispy and a bit too much batter but it's not that bad 5) Donga: black sesame & soy sauce flavored mochi balls *has limited sandos and bento boxes on weekdays (delivered at 10:30am)* Logistics: -accepts cc -available restroom -inside the Japanese tea garden (free for SF residents or everyone MWF 9-10am)
After finishing the visit of Japanese Tea Garden, this place gives a nice Japanese style finishing touch. This place is inside the tea garden, meaning one needs to have the entry to the teagarden before reaching this place. Matcha green tea was of good quality. Arare was a good cruncy snack. Then only other time I had something like this is from Costco. Once in a while they have it in a cover. Udon was vegetarian. Chicken karaage was good as well.
My favorite part of this place is really just how insanely authentic they are. Or at least, authentic compared to my trips to Japan. Things were a tad pricey, but hey, we were in the equivalent of a museum gift shop but for delicious Japanese food.. The service is prompt and polite, and the ambiance is absolutely gorgeous. You get sit in a Zen-like teahouse to look out on the perfectly manicured Japanese garden.
The Teahouse is one of the few decent food spots within Golden Gate Park, located inside the Japanese Tea Garden. When I visited, there was a long line to order, and while there are plenty of tables, seating isn't guaranteed. There is a hidden seating area that some people don't notice, so I recommend having one person find a table while the other waits in line. The ordering process is efficient--you place your order, receive a number, and they bring the food to your table. The service is quick, and tables turn over relatively fast. I tried the popcorn chicken, which was just okay. It lacked flavor, and the chili seasoning wasn't strong enough to enhance the taste. The mochi ice cream was a bit pricey for what it is, but it was served on a beautiful wooden plate. The udon was the highlight of the meal. It was simple but flavorful, with a broth that tasted authentic, similar to what I've had in Japan. I wish I had ordered two bowls. The rice balls were filling but plain, without any filling inside. Everything is outdoors, so on a nice day, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the trees and the garden's gift shop. The prices aren't the cheapest, but they're reasonable given the location. If you're in Golden Gate Park and need a bite, this is a solid choice.
A nice cozy place in Japanese Teacher Garden. They have reasonably decent menu which can give you a decent taste of Japan. I tried Doriyaki, vegetable soup and Chicken Karage. Soup was really great, it was my first time trying dorayaki - so still need to form an opinion. Chicken Karage was kind of disappointing - very soggy. I probably should have tried the tea - maybe next time around. But this place is definitely worth sampling.
This Japanese teahouse-style café is tucked inside the San Francisco Botanical Garden--a serene spot to unwind and enjoy a sweet treat. We ordered the matcha tea, matcha cheesecake, and chicken karaage--all of which were delicious. Seating is limited, but we were able to grab a spot once someone left. It's counter service, and while there was a line, it moved quickly.
Such a cute little teahouse inside the Japanese Tea Garden! The line was a bit long when we arrived, but it moved fairly quickly--we waited less than 20 minutes before it was our turn to order. We tried a few different teas: Sencha, Genmaicha, and Iced Green Tea. If you love strong tea flavors, this is the place to go! The teas were exactly what I was hoping for--rich and full of flavor. For snacks, we got the Sweet Soy Sauce Dango, Dorayaki, and Warabimochi. The dango was perfectly chewy, and the warabimochi was so soft and delicious! Everything paired perfectly with the tea. The vibe here is so peaceful. It's a great spot to just sit, admire the beautiful garden scenery, and chat with friends. Definitely a must-visit if you're at the Japanese Tea Garden!
Great tasting and affordable Japanese food with a spectacular view - the Japanese tea garden (free for SF residents) has a restaurant visitors can eat at after viewing the tea garden grounds - it offers a wide selection of Japanese food for a fairly affordable price - I usually order the udon, green tea, and daifuku/ice cream mochi which have always been hits - service is pretty fast and the seats facing the view usually open up quickly
Food is always great here for us to enjoy. The lines are always long on weekends but they seat us quickly and try their best. The desserts are always a hit! I recommend the dango. The ambiance of the place feels very relaxing but a bit chilly most of the time.
I absolutely love matcha and so did my friend. So we came here a couple days after my birthday to sit down and relax and enjoy our quality time together here. Absolutely loved how pretty and zen it was. The well balance of drinking tea and eating sweet desserts goes very well together.
I really enjoyed the the Teahouse at the tea gardens. It was not overly crowded and there is ample shade to sit on warm days. They have a fun selection of foods and teas to choose from. I chose the Jasmine tea and green tea cheese cake. My husband and I really enjoyed them. I love the cute plates and cups too. The beautiful views of the gardens from the tea house are wonderful and the beautiful wooden furniture you sit on is really cool too. The service people are very helpful and friendly. I look forward to visiting again.
Great Place to pick up a drink and a quick snack in the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco. Hits: from what we tried. Miso Soup is one of the better Miso Soups that we have had, plenty of Miso and Tofu with a ton of flavor, will order again. Coffee was very good mild with no harsh bitter after taste. Missed: Karaage Chicken our order had been cooked awhile back, I am sure they do this to keep the orders coming out quickly, but would not order this again the that reason. First Date Place? Probably ideal casual atmosphere, not expensive other than the admission the the gardens, but we bought an annual pass to all three gardens at Golden Gate Park and got a good discount since my wife works at a school. Food: will be back for the miso soup and will try some other items on the menu. Value: clearly as the only place in the Japanese garden the could charge more, but thankfully their prices are very fair. Service: Super fast service order at the counter take a number and the bring you your order. Atmosphere: Very cool tea house overlooking the koi Ponds, although a lot less Koi than there used to be when I was a kid. read more
Lovely tea house inside the Japanese Tea Garden in GGP. The vibe is peaceful and the views are beautiful. The iced green tea was refreshing and not sweet at all, and I also loved the sencha. They offer light snacks and sweet treats as well, though the food was just okay. Service was very friendly and relatively fast, but it can get crowded on weekends. read more

The Teahouse in the Japanese Tea Garden offered many little bites. Surprisingly, prices were cheap! The sencha had enough green tea for 2 people at under $6!?! I took pictures of all the food ordered. The Udon was really tasty. Chicken Karaage, dorayaki, Green Tea cheesecake. Need I say more? read more

My boyfriend and I decided to spend this past Sunday at the Golden Gate Park. We stopped by the Japanese Tea Garden first as we've been meaning to go for a few weeks. The garden itself was beautiful and we were totally not expecting there to be a little tea house in the garden as well! It was a very pleasant surprise and we loved everything we ordered there. We had the udon noodles, miso soup, Mitarashi (sweet soy sauce) dango, and sencha tea. The udon noodles were really good and the Mitarashi dango were AMAZING! Best thing out of everything we ordered. It was so warm and pillow-y. The miso soup and sencha tea were pretty standard--the miso soup in particular was a bit on the lighter side, but not a problem for us. I would go back to the garden just to have their Mitarashi dango, to be honest. It's one of my new favorites in SF. Overall, Teahouse was a cute little establishment with yummy desserts and snacks that I would definitely stop by again. The service was nice too, the people who served us were all very kind and friendly. Be sure to have some snacks and tea here while you're visiting the garden! read more
What an absolute delight! The Teahouse in the Japanese Tea Garden was the highlight of my visit there. It's right in the middle of the tea garden and is surrounded by all the trees and plants - you feel so removed from the outside world even with all the other people there. It's very tranquil and peaceful. The Teahouse itself is a very small and traditional looking building with a good amount of covered patio seating available. You order from someone at a window and then they bring your order out to you once it's ready and also hand you your tea from the window. I (of course) got some of the Sencha green tea and also got the tea house cookies. The green tea came in a beautiful tea pot and two cups so that I could serve it to both of us. Alongside that, we also ordered some of the chicken karaage, which was absolutely delicious, and a green tea cheesecake, which was very smooth and creamy. It was all so relaxing and created a perfect atmosphere as we sat on some of the stools that look out on the garden. The green tea was soothing and the assortment of cookies (including fortune cookies) were a great accompaniment. I loved my visit to the Japanese Tea Gardens, and the Teahouse there was definitely my favorite part of the experience. Wonderful food and tea to enjoy and a beautiful relaxing atmosphere to sit back in. A huge win in my book! read more
We had a snack at the Tea House (the teahouse at the SF Japanese Tea Gardens) when we were exploring the gardens, and it was wonderful. We had the Genmaicha tea, the iced barley tea, the Goma (black sesame) dango, the Mitarashi (sweet soy sauce) dango, and the warabimochi. (Dango is a Japanese dumpling made from rice flours and steamed on a skewer. Warabimochi is a confection similar to mochi; and the Tea House's was coated in matcha powder.) There was quite a line, but it moved fast (since it's snacks and tea, people were getting up all the time, opening up seats in the tea house quite often as well). The snacks were great - unique and harder to find Japanese snacks that were delicious. It's a great place if you're in the Gardens! read more
Try to grab a seat next to the water and garden if you can! Very serene and peaceful little tea house within SF's Japanese Tea Garden. We got the matcha w/ mochi, iced green tea, and a pack of warabimochi. The matcha is definitely a must try, it'll warm you up during a gloomy Karl-filled day. Their iced green tea was incredibly refreshing and the perfect amount of sweetness. The warabimochi was a great snack and paired well with the drinks. Loved relaxing here after strolling through the garden! read more

Don't forgot to stop here during your visit to the Japanese Tea Garden! Beautiful place to stop and enjoy the scenery with great food. Despite being such a small shop within the park, all the food was made to order and brought to your table. A lot of seating available but try to get there early so you can get the front row seats with the best views. If you order the udon, they also provide a little spice shaker, definitely try it! The chicken kaarage was juicy and tender, I shared since we had a lot of food but I would totally order one for myself haha. And if you've never had mitarashi dango, I highly recommend! The sweet shoyu (soy sauce) flavor on it and the chewy pull of the mochi is a match made in heaven. It's serenity is unmatched in such a busy city! read more
This little place is inside the Japanese Tea Garden which is within the Golden Gate Park lol There's a limited number of seating but we got lucky and found a spot with an amazing view of the garden! Ordered the sencha tea (good for two people) and green tea cheese cake. It was such a nice place to just chat and enjoy a mid-day snack! read more
This place is so lovely! Ok, how can you resist a cute little Teahouse in the beautiful Japanese tea garden in wonderful Golden Gate Park? You can't really, it's extraordinarily picturesque. So naturally it's a perfect spot to grab a quick bite or cup of tea while looking at the architecture, bonsai trees and babbling waterfall of the gardens around you. You order at the counter, find a seat and get your food, and/or beverages delivered to your seat. I think generally it's busy during the winter, nice days, etc. but my boyfriend and I went on a rainy, foggy, Saturday in December and it was easy to order and get a seat at a communal table looking out to the garden. Our pot of Sencha tea was brought out quickly and was perfect for the two of us to share. We ordered a few things because we were hungry so we shared the Udon, miso soup, Chicken Karaage and pork bun. They have a variety of other little snacks so you can grab just a bite and some tea or eat a proper meal with dessert if you're hungry like us. The soups (miso and Udon) were probably our favorites of the bunch. Let's be honest you don't really go to this place for the food. The chicken karaage had flavor but didn't have a good texture, it was soggy and felt microwaved. The pork bun was fine. Again the atmosphere makes it way worth it but maybe best to just get some tea and a snack. read more
Nice tea house that sells a variety of good Japanese tea and snacks. It's a good place to take a break and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the tea garden. All payments are contactless. Watch out for the squirrels they will come right onto your table. read more

Even though I have visited the Japanese Tea Garden many times, it has always been on my bucket list to actually have tea in the garden. I made sure I got here right when they opened to secure a spot. The Teahouse isn't very large and is nestled right in the center of the garden. It has a family style table in the middle. This place is so peaceful and offers beautiful views of the surrounding garden. In addition to tea, the Teahouse has a variety of light refreshments you can purchase to snack on. The Japanese Tea Garden was built in 1894 and is one of my favorite stops when I visit San Francisco. I highly recommend stopping in and getting some tea if you visit. It will definitely enhance the experience. read more

As I type this, powered sugar adorns my phone from the delicious confectionery treat that accompanied my Matcha hot tea. This location is one of the finest in enjoying an outdoor tea sipping experience!! Match iced green tea and green tea cheesecake. The matcha iced green tea is the best I've ever had. Yes you heard me, the best I've ever had. I've been to LA, that OC and new York for matcha tea and nowhere compares to the matcha tea here. You have to buy tickets into the Japanese tea garden in order to grab the tea and food here but it's worth it. A good refreshing drink and snack while you tour the garden. Honestly folks, get the matcha iced tea. The cheesecake would be a 4/5 from me. A bit strong but interesting concept as I've never had green tea cheesecake before. It was just a bit too strong and I was easily overwhelmed by the flavor after a few bites. Overall great place to drink tea and enjoy the garden. Would come back read more

Writing this review as I am sitting in this quaint little tea house inside the japanese tea garden . So relaxing and peaceful. I've never been to Japan , but I imagine it is close to this... So grateful to have something so nice during my little covid getaway... Everyone is so warm and friendly here... As I listen to the waterfall nearby and enjoy my matcha hot tea with mochi bites... You can imagine the smile on my face:) read more

Get the mochi sampler!!!!!!!!! As a Japanese American, I've had my fair share of mochi. I honestly don't know how this place has gotten the consistency so melt-in-your-mouth amazing Not super chewy like traditional mochi. 10/10 consistency!!!! It came w green tea, mango, lychee, and strawberry. Some pieces were layered which was a nice variation. Overall, this place is a nice way to sit and enjoy some snacks in the Japanese Tea Garden. If you're a first timer or looking for some cute things to do in SF, I would recommend checking the garden and the Teahouse out! read more
This is such a cool spot! Located inside the Japanese Tea Garden, it's a perfect spot to grab some light bites after a stroll through the garden. We went on a rainy day but the tea house has a covered deck with tables and chairs so we were able to eat our snacks while watching the rain. We ordered the pork bun, dango, dorayaki, and sencha (Japanese green tea). Everything came out quickly and tasted great. A really unique experience! read more
