You know it's a good sign when the hostess personally greets diners, by name, as she's escorting you to your table. The decor is simple and conservative. The food is fresh and unique, the standard options are available but there are plenty of surprises peppered throughout the menu. The portions are not huge but you'll find plenty of tempting dishes to choose from so go ahead and get your own entrees so everyone at the table can try something new. My husband and I went for lunch on Saturday. At first I wasn't too impressed, but as I ate and moved from course to course I became more and more positive. We had the buffet. The service was good as well. The food was very good and I really liked the hot sour soup and the General Tao's chicken. The best best Chinese I have had in a long time reasonably priced the broccoli and mushrooms were amazing and the staff was really nice.

I hate to say it, but I'm starting to lose my interest in Tea Garden. I've had it several times now, and it just seems to become less and less special each time. Don't get me wrong, the food is still OK, and the service is still fantastic, but beyond that...it's becoming just another Chinese joint in my mind. I understand Tea Garden is trying to be a bit inventive with their food, and get away from the standard, ho-hum Americanized food that's available at Chinese joints around the metro and around the country. I can definitely respect that...but I'd still prefer the truly authentic Chinese food (such as at Szechuan Dynasty down the street). I am started to think Tea Garden is doing a bit too much...trying to be good at a lot of different stuff, rather than great at a few things. My most recent visit consisted of Ma-La Fish, and Beef w/Broccoli. The Ma-La Fish was ok...it was just your standard fried fish in sauce, with various veggies of average tastiness. The beef with broccoli tasted so average that I felt I could cook it at home (and indeed have several times, with it tasting around the same). Look, don't get me wrong, this is an OK place...it just isn't as special as I thought it once was, and prices seem slightly high to me (just ever so slightly). 2.75 stars. read more

As others have said it is a small buffet, but the interior is nicer, cleaner, and more comfortable than those huge chinese buffet restaurants. Service is nice, but not extremely attentive. I think they are too busy during lunch for just 2 people waiting on tables, seating people, and ringing up customers. Even though there are few entree options on the buffet they are all delicious. They don't all taste the same (again, like some other places), and they are refilled constantly so they are always hot and fresh. I like the egg drop soup that is filled with tiny cubes of tofu. The appetizers are also good because they make small batches and refill often, so they don't get dried out. The chicken wings are particularly juicy and delicious. As for the entrees, I liked the pork and green beans best. The seafood entree was also tasty. I usually avoid seafood at buffets since you have no idea how long it's been sitting there, but the buffet is so fresh at Tea Garden you are safe giving the shrimp entree a try. read more

Nice, friendly staff, prompt service. Egg drop soup didn't have much flavor at all. I selected Amazing Chicken after reading about it. The "amazing" ingredient appears to be peanut butter. It was too sweet for my taste, contrary to the "spicy pepper" notation on the menu. I had hoped this place would change my "chinese is chinese" opinion, but no luck. We stopped in for a snack this afternoon and ordered the Wonton Soup and Fried Pork dumplings. The soup was fine but the dumplings while large were not fully cooked, the meat was still pink. We asked them to correct this and we heard from the kicthen that this was the proper color for the meat and a few other interesting comments. It helps that my wife is Chinese and fluent in Mandarin. The cook proceeded to come out and inform us that the meat, while pinkish, was cooked well done and would not accept that well done pork is NOT pink... :( My wife asked for the ckeck and they brought it over with a subtraction for the dumplings, however they only discounted the uneaten portion. Apparently one bite from 2 dumplings is valued at $1.00. We paid what they asked but will never return. read more

We have been huge Tea Garden fans since 1998. We haven't been for probably over six months. Today I begged to go. We didn't realize they had been sold. It used to be a high-quality restaurant. Meat was a higher standard than your standard Chinese fare. They had excellent appetizers (shrimp Rangoon was fantastic... definitely better than regular crab Rangoon). On today's visit, they had a new menu (same menu items, but new physical menus), gross vinyl tablecloths on the table (which made it look like a cheap restaurant). They didn't have cauliflower (which is the only vegetable my husband likes in his Chinese food). So he and I both ordered golden chicken with five flavors. It came out looking like a completely different dish than it has ever been before. Slimy. Standard Chinese food. You know, the kind where you go in and they have all the cheesy pictures of the food on the wall? Yeah... that. What a disappointment. We will never go back. And I drove 45 minutes to go there. Lame. Bring back the old cook. You made a bad choice in letting them go and changing your recipes to standard, low-grade Chinese food. Booooooooo read more

Tea Garden is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Kansas City area. It's not the fanciest, but the food is good and the service is, too. It's enjoyable enough that I eat here pretty regularly, and the servers all know me by name. I'm not the only one -- they seem to have a good, friendly relationship with many of their customers, which speaks volumes to me. As for the actual food, Tea Garden has plenty of standard Chinese menu options, but the specials are what I love. My favorites are the Amazing Chicken (a peanut sauce) and Crispy Garden Beef. And their Egg Drop Soup is the best I've had by far. If you like casual places with good food and great service, check it out. read more

Now this might be a biased review, however, I really love the Tea Garden. Originally from Kansas, but now living in Chicago, whenever I come home to visit Mom, we always go to Tea Garden. My mom is dear friends with the owner, Anne...who is seriously, the sweetest lady you will meet. She is friendly, treats her patrons as family, and goes the extra mile. Now, as I said, this could be a biased review, but prove me wrong. They have excellent lunch specials and a buffet that is really a lot more quality then those other crap "chinese" buffet resturants. The food is authentic, but do not fear, she also makes the standard American chinese foods such as General chicken and sweet and sour chicken. Get the fried pot stickers, hot and sour soup, mongolian beef, kung pao chicken...its fantastic. Seriously, prove me wrong...the best Chinese in the KC burbs. read more

Stop being so modest Tea Garden. You are way better than the stereotypical cookie cutter strip mall Chinese restaurant. Dined here the other night and got all up in some Crispy Sesame Chicken with fried rice. Love the thinly sliced chicken cutlets (as opposed to the huge, intimidating mega chunks you usually find everywhere else). Snow peas and carrots were fresh and complemented the sesame sauce nicely. Wonderful family style service. You can tell each dish is scratch made. I had the Romeo and Juliet Chef Special, my wife had Purple Moon and both were unique and absolutely delicious. This was my second visit, the reviews are so wonderful but both times my experience has not been so great. The lunch buffet is all I've experienced and they have very few options plus the food appears to have been warming for a long time. Today the rice was so old it was dry and crunchy. My husband and I ate here tonight on a whim. We were looking for a Chinese restaurant open later and hadn't been to Tea Garden in a while. We were waited on by the owner who was very attentive and welcoming. She clearly took pride in her food and restaurant. We ordered the vegetarian spring rolls as an appetizer and they were perfectly crispy and steaming hot. My husband got the honey walnut shrimp and devoured it. The sauce was so flavorful and savory. I think it's his new favorite. I ordered the orange chicken and was so pleased. The orange flavor wasn't overpowering, but clearly there. I'm picky about orange chicken, because I often find the sauce has a 'fake' orange flavor. Not here. It was delicious. Service was helpful and quick. Food was high quality and the price was perfect. We ate at Tea Garden last weekend for the first time and it was outstanding. The fried tofu was incredibly crisp and the steamed dumplings were super-tender. The flavor was delicious and balanced, the textures of the meat and vegetables were great, and the rice was cooked perfectly. I had ordered the Sesame Chicken and thought it was particularly good. I was very disappointed. I read the reviews before we went to Tea Garden and all of them said they loved it. First off the waitress was rude and horrible. One of the employees was sneezing everywhere. The food was not great at all. The Coke and Diet Coke were really flat. I was really hoping to find a really good Chinese place. :( read more

Tried this place for the first time this noon. Didn't do the buffet as it looked good, but smallish, and didn't want that much food. Ordered off the menu and it was incredibly hot and fantastic. We've been coming to Tea Garden since the early 90s when my children were very young & my husband and I used to come here often. It has not really has changed, it's still beautiful on the inside, warm and inviting and exactly the same delicious wholesome fresh food. Our favorite dishes are Moo Shoo Pork, Sesame Chicken & Lo Mein, Rangoons, Spring Rolls & their hot Jasmine tea! Love this place so much! read more
