Picked up lunch here today & ordered the Combination Pan Fried Noodles that included beef, chicken, shrimp & assorted vegetables. I also order a small side of the Hot & Sour Soup. The soup was good but Sushi UNI still has the best so far. The Pan Fried Noodles was also a delight. They put just enough brown sauce to soak in the noodles to where it was soft but still crunchy. The shrimp & chicken was cooked well but the beef was somewhat a little sweet. Not exactly sure why. The vegetables were cooked well. Not overly cooked or under raw. The hostess/waitress was nice & polite. When I asked if they packed a spoon & fork along with the hot oil I requested on the side, she said yes. Unfortunately, there wasn't a spoon inside for my soup but only a fork. Luckily I had one in the car so it worked out. Most importantly the hot oil was there & I was happy. Edit: I had leftovers from yesterday's lunch for today & after taking the box out the bag today (I didn't yesterday) I found the missing spoon. Oops. Changed my rating to 5 stars. This restaurant used to be our weekly lunch place. The ownership has changed therefore the quality is now very poor, the food is cold, and most of the buffett dishes were empty, at 1215pm on a weekday. When the previous owners ran the place food was always hot, fresh, and tasted delicious, and the recipes had not changed for the last 15 years. Now the food including the hot and sour soup smothered in soy sauce. Chinese food is so much more than that, however the crab rangoons, spring rolls and fried chicken were still reasonably good. How far they fell from grace! I never give one star reviews and when I feel the need to do so it's usually cause the food and the service were so terrible and so terrible means when I complained they acted like it was my fault or I was trying to get over on them. Like seriously for a 12.99 chicken meal? Today I ordered the same dish I ordered the previous 3 occasions the chicken Szechuan. It was cold, the sauce was so sweet it was slightly syrupy, and the portion was substantially smaller to the point that I took one bite of the chicken and noodles and the lady proceeds to tell me I need to pay for 1/2 the meal cause she says I ate half. No ma'am I thought you ate half before you brought it out3 other people were with me and two out of 3 said there food tasted substantially different than our last two visits. They now charge you an additional fee to pay with a credit card, and they don't tell you before swiping your card. Then they try to gaslight you like you're crazy to ask why they're charging a credit card fee. This is after raising prices on food already. Extremely disappointing because the focus has clearly shifted. I can't tell you one other business that makes the customer pay the credit card processing fee. Weak. read more

The best Chinese food in all of Olathe! So happy dine in is back and they did have the best little buffet but, no more (as of 12-2021. Might change but, owner said doesn't plan on bringing back). Perfect variety and cooked perfect. The best veggies fresh and plenty. Even dishes like General Tao's gets some veg. Not greasy or salty just perfect. Every time I go here, it makes me happy. I am a food service/industry snob, and this place never disappoints me. I always get take out and everything is fast and easy, as it should be with take-out!! But apparently this is not an easy thing for other places to achieve. The service is always friendly and accommodating from the time you call in to order, to the time you go to pick it up. I feel I am getting my money's worth every time!! And they work with certain dietary needs without making it sounds like an inconvenience, which is so awesome!! By far my favorite Chinese buffet! Great service and despite their limited selection...their food trumps quantity with quality great tasting Chinese food. Although it may not be authentic Chinese food...I think it blows all it's competition by continually churning out fresh food every 10minutes to keep the buffet fresh and hot! Favorite entrees: Fried Chicken skewers Beef & Brocolli Sauteed stringed sweet potatoes The fried chicken skewers are to die for! Literally they are the first to get snatched up when their fresh outta the fryers! Perfectly seasoned with the right amount of crunch in every bite. Stays crispy, since they make new ones every 5-10min. The staff is fabulous! All Chinese women staff! Head lady keeps the whole staff organized and efficient in satisfying their customer! Talked to a few frequent patrons of the place and they said Tea Garden has been around since the mid-90s and the taste of their food hasn't changed one bit. They've kept the same success formula going for 20years now! They also said that they haven't renovated the place since then. My jaw dropped because Tea Garden is spotless and super clean! I will definitely keep coming back to this cozy and lovely Chinese buffet. I'd rather come to this place than those huge Chinese buffets that offer a gigantic array of food but not necessarily focus on the taste of each entree. Not too many options, but we did get to choose from hot and sour soup or egg drop, along with fried rice or lo mien, several appetizers (dumplings, small TINY crab Rangoon, and chicken on a stick), and about 8 entree options. We had a really good meal from Tea Garden. As a starter we had the crab rangoon with sweet and sour soup and egg drop soup. All had great flavor and I was a big fan of the hot sour soup. For the entrees we got the crispy orange chicken that had great flavor along with Hunan beef that was delicious and had a nice little kick of spice from the sauce. My husband and I ate here for the first time recently. After reading the positive reviews on Yelp, we were really excited to try it out. However, we were definitely disappointed with our experience. We came in on a Thursday for lunch and decided to try out the lunch buffet. The size of the buffet immediately let us down. It was very small without many options. It also looked as though a couple of the options were the same sauce, just mixed with different meat. The rice looked a little dry. The egg drop soup was okay. The food we tried tasted good, but nothing that blew us away. For the two of us, we ended up spending less than $20, which was a good deal. I'd recommend this if you don't mind a small variety of choices as the service was good. Maybe we'll have better luck trying it out at dinner time. read more

TLDR takeaway to start off: THE EMPLOYEES DON'T WEAR MASKS DURING A PANDEMIC. If you notice, even on Yelp it says their precautions are "providing hand sanitizer" - no mention of requiring masks. Forget the mandatory mask ordinance in Johnson County, huh? ::Ordered takeout and arrived to a restaurant with a lit up "OPEN" sign, although the whole restaurant was dark except for a buzzing and sort of flickering light in the front entry of the place. My only gut reaction when I walked in was to take a snapchat video and send it to some friends, shocked at its appearance, but still finding humor in it. The dining area is blocked off with some chairs with trays stacked on top of them and there are -no joke- two clear cheap shower curtains hanging from the ceiling to right above the countertop. No worries, they did take the initiative to take off one fan blade to accommodate the shower curtain up top, otherwise it would just look silly and provide absolutely no protection, right?! They do have hand sanitizer sitting out but I honestly felt cleaner NOT using it. There is a bell (which I assume everyone who walks in is made to touch because nobody is working up front). I ring it and a woman comes out - she seems surprised anyone came in, even though I had a takeout order I placed 20 minutes before. She's not wearing a mask. I figure, maybe she genuinely forgot and didn't notice she wasn't wearing one. It's been a long 10 months. Fine. She goes back to the kitchen, where they obviously just started cooking the food that was supposed to be ready five minutes ago. I figure "okay, at least it will be hot and fresh." She comes back about ten minutes later and still has NO MASK. Immediately I'm thinking if I hadn't already paid, I'd be out that door. You KNOW if the front of house employee has no mask on, there's ZERO CHANCE that anyone coming in contact with the food is wearing a mask, gloves, or taking any obvious precautions. She pushes a paper receipt towards me, under the surely-CDC-approved shower curtain and asks if my order looks correct. Not wanting to get anywhere near her, I Stretch Armstronged across the room to reach for the paper and she takes the hint and grabs a mask that's been sitting on the counter. And not like "oh crap, sorry I forgot my mask", but more like "ugh okay, you expect me to wear a mask". I hightail it out of there. Get home and open the pan fried noodles - they are clumped together, fried to oblivion and hard as a rock. Completely inedible. Normally, I'd just throw the food away and move on. But with everything else shady going on at Tea Garden, it didn't feel right to not ask for a refund. I called and explained and the woman said she'd need my card information to give a refund. I told her I paid through PayPal and she said she could give me a cash refund. I told her thanks and I'd be by tomorrow. She wasn't nice about any of it, but she wasn't rude. She just didn't care. I get a call back immediately from her, this time saying that the owner is demanding I bring the food back if I want a refund. Mind you, I said I'd be by tomorrow. So I'm supposed to keep food that is unfit for human consumption for a day and drive it back to the restaurant for ...what? Owner inspection? I can guarantee if the food is bad when served, it won't get better overnight. WHAT WERE THEY GOING TO DO WITH THE FOOD? I was so confused at this absurd demand. I told her I really don't care about a refund at this point and she interrupted to let me know she didn't care either. I assured her that they have bigger concerns than crappy food when you're running a restaurant that doesn't care to follow basic health protocols during a pandemic. Look. If someone tells me a place has bad food, it's their opinion. It may be right, it may be wrong, and maybe I'll try it myself and see if I like it. If I hear that a restaurant has employees that don't think they need to wear masks while preparing and serving food to customers right now, I'm gonna steer clear and probably make a few phone calls for good measure. I've eaten Chinese food from here to California to Shanghai and back again, and I consistently find myself going back to the Tea Garden for the simple fact that the food really is that good. Let's get a few things out of the way. There really isn't much going on at the Tea Garden in way of traditional dishes. You won't find cilantro filled tofu dishes like you might at Jen Jen's in Overland Park, who do traditional food pretty well. The Tea Garden also isn't the king of what you're used to. General Tso's Chicken, Crab Rangoon, and all their ilk are American Chinese food, and I'd pick China Inn in Olathe as the best representative of that. What the Tea Garden does is focus on getting a few original dishes done right that you will have never had anywhere else. When you stop in do the restaurant a favor and try something other than the buffet (which as others have stated is small, but has a good selection and is turned over frequently.) I'm not a fan of a buffet in any shape or form so it's a good thing the Tea Garden's chef specials actually live up to their names. I'm a fan of the following... - Ma-la Tofu - Autumn Green (also a Tofu dish) - Hot Braised Chicken - Romeo and Juliette - Honey Walnut Shrimp - Purple Moon Vegetarians, take note, there's some great dishes here for you. The afore mentioned Autumn Green and Ma-la Tofu dishes are deep fried firm tofu and don't come off as mushy if tofu has ever been a turn-off for you in the past. The sautéed green beans (which I believe uses a combination of soy sauce, plum sauce, and brown sugar among other things...) and vegetarian dumplings are also fantastic. The co-owners (and husband and wife team) of Ann and Winston will make sure your food is consistently good and will make you feel like part of the Tea Garden family in no time, should you make it a frequent dining destination. I noticed another review stating you can't order your own dish during the lunch hour. It's true they won't seat you sometimes with a menu during lunch sometimes, perhaps assuming incorrectly that everyone's there for the buffet on the lunch hour, but you can absolutely order from the menu as of August of 2010, so don't let that deter you. The service isn't flashy. You won't have anyone wearing starched uniforms spouting a mile long list of adjectives to prove they can memorize a special. They'll make sure you're taken care of but not to the point of pestering. They're always cordial and friendly. The Tea Garden of course holds a special place in my heart since I moved to the KC area. I had eaten at a plethora of Chinese restaurants but kept on coming back to the Tea Garden thanks to the friendly service and the great food. read more

What I mean is that an ideal experience can also be an anomaly. Not the case at this little gem in Olathe. Having dined at Tea Garden twice, I can definitely say that this place has earned its stars on so many levels. I went there for supper, before a movie. Then the next day I had a late lunch, and tried one of their lunch specials. If I'd been there an hour earlier, I would have caught the lunch buffet, which I've heard is quite good. Let's start with the service and atmosphere. I love a place that has a friendly and inviting energy. The owner and staff at Tea Garden really make you feel comfortable. Smiles, laughter and light conversation fill the place. And while the decor is simple, it is also tasteful. Large photographs that are actually interesting to view hang on the walls. Nice tile and light green paint are the theme. They keep the place clean and warm. Okay, now on to the great food... I had the hot and sour soup to start. The taste was sublime. I didn't see any meet in it, which is fine. Good to the last drop. At both meals I had their pan-fried dumplings. These are honestly the BEST I've ever had - anywhere. They are large, hand-made, and very flavorful. Well worth the wait! Lastly, the entrees were delicious. I have sampled the cashew chicken, hunan beef and pork with dried red pepper. There was enough sauce to coat the ingredients, which was just right. I'm sure you know many places that float a few veggies and meat in a thick pool of sauce. Tea Garden's entrees were perfectly-seasoned, and very generous portions. The prices were surprisingly low. I believe they are closed on Sundays. I will definitely be there again soon for the lunch buffet. For someone who loves Chinese food as much as me, this is definitely a great find! I can't believe I've been here over 10 years and not tried this place. Really good for a small storefront Chinese restaurant. We tried Autumn Green and Honey Walnut Shrimp based on another Yelper's recommendation and both were really good. (Good call Ryan K) We had hot and sour soup and it was rich and had lots of white pepper just how I like it. The servers were very attentive and friendly. Really surprised that it was not crowded on a Friday night. The only disappointment was the hot tea was generic black tea and not a nice Oolong style. $30 for two entrees, two soups, and tea. This evening at Tea Garden I decided to try another of the chef's specialties, the Ma-La Tofu. Another delicious winner! The dish consists of perfectly fried cubes of tofu adorned with bits of red pepper, green beans, cauliflower florets, etc., all in a tasty, slightly tart Hunan sauce. Even for those who aren't usually impressed by tofu I would recommend this! The tofu cubes are yummily crispy/crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, and don't taste like tofu at all -- they soak up the flavors of the dish. Great vegetarian fare, but good for anyone looking for a lighter main dish. Although marked "spicy," the sauce on this dish is quite mild -- if you want more kick ask them to increase the heat. The hot-and-sour soup also remains consistently good. Service is attentive and extremely friendly. What's not to like about any of this? It may be a bit out-of-the-way for a lot folks, but Tea Garden is worth a trip for top quality, beautifully prepared Chinese food by a kitchen that takes its cooking seriously! read more

Johnson County is a land where great things lurk unexpectedly in bland strip mall locations. Case in point- Tea Garden. On a stormy summer evening we were on the look out for some Chinese take out. We didn't have high expectations, but Tea Garden really came in above and beyond what we expected. Think contemporary Chinese at a good price. The Tofu with Black Bean sauce was fantastic, the Autumn Green dish under Chef's Specialties was even better. Ordering the Tofu as a Combo Platter was a great way to get some Fried Rice and Rangoon, as well as a smaller portion size of food- perfect for keeping your bill down as well. If you are looking for greasy American-style Chinese food (a la most of those icky buffet places) this is not for you, but if you want something flavorful and fresh head on down to Tea Garden. read more

This was one of my favorite restaurants growing up. Some of the kids in the neighborhood used to save up our money and ride our bikes to eat. Every time I go in the owner still remembers my name even if it has been awhile since I've been in. Their buffet is small but the quality is definitely better than most buffets. Okay, here is the deal. I have been going to Tea Garden for over 8 years. Always for lunch for their buffet. It is excellent. I especially love it when Anne has General Tao on the buffet. No body makes better dumplings either. I could go on and on, but recently I had the occasion to have take out from Tea Garden brought to my home while recovering from knee surgery. My friend brought a dish called Amazing Chicken. Oh my goodness. It truly lives up to its name. It is a dish in a peanut butter sauce that is to die for. Along with the chicken lo mein and Garden Platter sampler we had the meal of dreams. You have to try this excellent cuisine as soon as your schedule allows.
