I stopped in here awhile back, and remember the experience like it was yesterday. We entered through the coffeeshop, which was an experience in itself. Subterranean twists and turns, kitschy retro stuff all around, then bam, record shop. Found some great vinyl here, namely the Dawn of the Dead OST. Located in a subterranean alcove next to the basement Soma coffee shop, TD's is not only loaded with great albums and equipment, but offers a unique bohemian record prowl experience. The owner, Willy, is off the charts knowledgeable about all genres of music and himself a fusion solo-orchestral musician. The shop is going strong two blocks west of the IU campus on Kirkwood in the bowels of a garretted old mansion, this is an adventure not to be missed. I never leave empty handed. Great place with a long and illustrious history in Bloomington. Peruse the shop - you'll find something you need.

Pretty interesting place. To get to it you have to enter a building that hosts a couple different small shops. You then have to go downstairs into the basement and that's where you'll find the shop. It's dark and loud..but also somewhat cozy down there. There's a seating area off to the side that I guess is Bloomington's alternative to hanging out and studying at a coffee shop. Though, I can't imagine studying being too easy down there with how dark and loud it is. Their selection of music was alright. The vinyl was organized pretty simply, but I couldn't wrap my head around how their CDs were organized. They were just kind of all over the place. Each little section would be organized alphabetically, some would even have genres listed above them, but then in the section it was just be a bunch of random things that didn't match up. Maybe things got moved around and no one has bothered to reorganize or something. I dunno. Regardless I was able to find some pretty good stuff. Overall reasonably priced..a couple things were slightly more expensive than they should have been, but again I don't mind spending a bit more money on places like this to help keep them alive. I could see myself being a regular here if I lived in the area. read more

Did this place keep going after Tom passed away? I haven't been back since - I always wondered. I was buying CDs from Tom since before he had his own place. He was always cool about trade-ins, and he was a nice guy to talk to, but he was also absolutely encyclopedic about music, and could always figure out what I was talking about, even if nobody else in town could. Tom's places were always like that government warehouse at the end of Indiana Jones, where they hid the Ark of the Covenant. You could dig around and find a CD that you would never, ever be able to find anywhere else in your life. And the fact that you could then talk to Tom about it for 20 minutes made it even better. I've lived in three major metro areas since I left Indiana, and I still haven't found a CD store this good. And now I've resigned to the fact that I never will, especially since Tom's left us. Small and cozy record store. Not a huge selection but there were some nice finds in here and I got a nice record for $12 in VG that probably would have gone for much more on eBay or Discogs. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

A great hidden store in Bloomington. The selection on used vinyl varies. For used vinyl there is a $3 bin and the a $1 bin, of which have very decent stuff that you wouldn't usually find for a $1. I would recommend stopping here read more

TD's is a great store. The staff is a little less talkative than other record stores in town, but they almost always have the oddball music that you can't find anywhere else. I met Tom late in his life, and he introduced me to Josh Homme's first band, Kyuss, which I hadn't even known existed (in the days before wikipedia). He was a great man, and the staff continuing there are highly knowledgeable as well, if not a bit less charismatic. read more
