A little history about the building this is in…read more The McGregor House was built in 1885. It is located in Brazil, Indiana. This former bed and breakfast was turned into the local YMCA back in the 1920's. In the 1940's the gymnasium was added onto the home. The gymnasium has original hardwood floors and subway tiles. They use I'd guess about 3/4 of the space for display of goods. Prices were a bit higher then I expected. They do have some beautiful pieces. I'm just not sure worth the price. The owner was friendly. She along with the two other customers weren't wearing masks. I'm going to have to start getting use to that and assume they are vaccinated and not just... Nice shop worth a visit. There are some other beautiful house to look at in the area.

This store is a hybrid of antique store, gift store and a flea market booth. It has a wide variety of items and many different rooms of them. The shopkeeper found a glass dish with a lid made in green glass. It works perfectly for my use and looks antique which is not what I was originally looking for but makes it even better. This store, Candy Kitchen and the Come N Get It restaurant have really opened my eyes to the downtown area of Martinsville. I'm sure they are more discoveries waiting for me.

The jewelry is neatly organized by type, stone, color, etc. Glass cases and walls are filled with silver and gold. The clerk/owner was friendly, knowledgeable and pointed out where to find the older pieces. She was happy to spend time with us or leave us to shop. I was fascinated by the large pieces of amber with little inclusions. I saw many quality pieces. Prices were reasonable. My husband liked looking at the sterling silver antique old and ends. A newspaper clipping on the wall tells the story of owners, Al and Carol Drake. The Drakes have been selling jewelry for 50 years. Al is a silver and gold smith. There was a sign that indicated that they repair and craft jewelry, but there is a three month wait because they are busy. We found free street parking nearby (which was a miracle). This shop is definitely worth checking out. You're probably not going to leave empty handed.

It is still in the family of founding owners Bill and Marielle Jockey as their daughter now owns it. Open year-round, The Totem Post offers authentic Native American jewelry, crafts, moccasins, knives, ethnic gifts, silver, and copper jewelry. The Totem Post folks are without fail friendly and I'm pleased to report that the shop itself is surprisingly wheelchair friendly (not always true in Nashville). A lot of the items at The Totem Post have a sense of spirituality to them and the times I've visited it has felt like a bit of a respite to even enter the establishment. The store has a bit of a fun origin story. The Jockeys were dancers on the SS. Uruguay who visited family in Indianapolis. During the visit, they were taken to Nashville, Indiana. Not long after, the leathercraft establishment went up for sale - The Jockeys moved forward and bought the place and quickly began establishing themselves among Native American and South American communities so they could carry high quality yet affordable items. While Nashville has certainly grown larger than those five shops from 1952, The Totem Post remains a local favorite and a tourist destination. I seldom, if ever, visit Nashville without a stop here.
