We had Sunday Brunch outdoors in Taverna's garden as a family of six and it was just perfect. It was a warm day, but the shaded areas were cool and just lovely. We split a Satyricon mixed appetizer platter for four, a stuffed eggplant, and two saganakis (flamed cheese) with the wonderful house bread as starters. It was a lot of food and it all disappeared. Among our entrees were a lamb shank special, a grilled lamb kebab, and a Greek salad with grilled salmon that were all really good. For dessert there were a number of choices including a wonderful baklava and delicious hot apple fritters. The house cabernet was very nice and the service was superb. I ended with my usual Greek coffee. It's one of our favorite places in Old Town, especially when the weather is nice. read more

Great place! Lovely atmosphere, we sat outside on a beautiful evening. They have a really great patio, and the inside looks very inviting as well. Food was really good, I wasn't blown away but I did like it, it was fresh and presented very beautifully, the eggplant mezze was good and the poached apricot dessert was also quite good-needed more apricot for the amount of yogurt though. The service was excellent, everyone who works there was very pleasant, and they did separate the checks for our group which was really convenient. I would definitely go back. My only regret is forgetting to take photos... this place gives off Greek family energy! They can pull tables together or apart for any size party and they have ample space to do it whether indoors or on the cute outdoor/ covered balcony area. Felt like I was in greece! We enjoyed our lunch at Taverna Cretekou. The garden was a beautiful place to eat our meal. Service was okay as well. The food was really good, but the portions weren't very big, especially for how expensive each item was. The presentation of our meal was very well done, from the server pouring the oil for the bread to the piping of the hummus & tzatziki. It was an elevated dining experience that's great for a date night, but I would say it's definitely overpriced. The outdoor seating area is extremely nice and covered. We ate outdoors nearly every meal during our week and a half long trip to DC, and Taverna Cretekou had the nicest atmosphere. That started our meal on a good note. However, the service was not very smooth and all the food was fine but not memorable. The sampler platter should have included bread given all the dips on there, but we had to ask. The pastitsio was good and filling. The Satyrikon appetizer was a standout, especially the hummus and tzatziki with the hot pita. Probably my favorite part of the meal. Dessert was also strong--we tried the baklava and the Verikoka Aphrodite, which were both sweet, light, and satisfying. The back patio had a great vibe. Nothing over the top, but it gave off an authentic, relaxed Greek feel that added a lot to the experience. Overall, definitely one of the top Greek spots in the area--probably top 5. This is a gem in Old Town. The servers are knowledgeable and so funny and great. The inside is adorable, and the courtyard outside feels like you're literally on vacation and not in Old Town, Alexandria. The food is SO good. I've enjoyed multiple meals at Taverna Cretekou but hadn't written a review before. After a very satisfying meal with really great service by Nick, I've decided to do so. It's been a hot summer but we were lucky to choose a Saturday evening when the heat and humidity were more tolerable. Our group of friends sat at a table in the back, in the Garden, which is a truly great place to enjoy a meal for a couple of hours. Nick introduced himself and was absolutely attentive during our entire meal. And also, wasn't hovering us. That's a balance that many servers haven't figured out. We started our meal with some drinks that those who ordered enjoyed. They even ordered another round. I didn't have one so I can't comment. We were initially presented with bread and olive oil. The bread was good, it could be more interesting. The olive oil that is served with garlic and other spices was delicious. It could be a dish in itself. Our appetizers included hummus and Saganaki which is served after a display of lighting it. It is a very mild cheese that melts with the flame. We had a very large Greek salad that was fresh, good, but frankly not great. The entrees included the special which was a grilled Mediterranean fish served whole that I had. It was very good. The salmon special was also excellent. Our friends also ordered the Lamb Lemonato-the meat really did fall off the bone as advertised. The Branzini was really good, as were the Kotopoulo kebab and lemonato. All the while, our water glasses were filled as needed and our questions answered. We were completely satisfied after enjoying these dishes. I have not enjoyed dessert or coffee here so I can't comment on those. Perhaps next time. read more

Anytime I am back in Alexandria, Virginia. I always make a point of going here. This is a family run restaurant that has been in business, gosh for at least 40 years - probably more. We ordered an appetizer platter with many dips and spreads along with the flaming cheese appetizer and everything was sensational! As it got to be around cocktail hour, we just wanted to find a nice quiet restaurant to sit outside in the shade and have a glass of wine and maybe an appetizer. Came here after a recommendation from a friend and so worth it! We were greeted by the owner. She was in a gorgeous green and blue dress and it blended so well with the decor of the restaurant which felt like you were transported out of Old Towne and into Greece. I was so impressed by the hospitality and welcoming nature of (I think) the owners. I called on a Saturday night to ask if they allow dogs on the patio. The woman graciously said of course and recommended a reservation so she could ensure the best table to accommodate space for the dog. We made the reservation for Sunday evening and they had the perfect table waiting. Shortly after our arrival she brought our four legged boy a bone and another staff member brought him a bowl of water. It's lovely to enjoy the company of good friends, over a delicious meal, in a perfect setting in a family owned establishment where they go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and accommodated. My Baklava's phyllo dough was very thin and the syrup drowned the flavors of the nuts and spice. My colleague's Galaktoboureko was "not enjoyable," she said. Also, be clear when ordering a salad - especially as an appetizer. We were charged for 4 servings, when we thought we were getting 1 to share. (We had ordered 3 other appetizers, so 4 total.) It was served with bread and a special olive oil blended with parsley, salt, pepper, and garlic... a real contender for best bread dip ever. Both my Moussaka and his Lamb Lemonato arrived steaming hot. The lamb shank was a falling-off-the-bone combo of tender meat and smooth, toothsome collagen connectors. The creamy top of my Moussaka wasn't bland like most places but tasted faintly of lemon and nutmeg. This was savory comfort food cooked with a gourmet twist. My one criticism is the high price of the Greek Salads. They were too expensive at $16.95 each for one cubed cucumber, one sliced tomato, four black olives, six capers, and a 3/4 teaspoon of crumbled feta. Yes, the check smarted a bit, but this was a treat for date night. I recommend this restaurant and I'll be back. This is my go-to for many early evening meals prior to entertainment plans, especially if I plan to remain in NOVA for the evening and not go into the District. Excellent service, well prepared food, interesting and extensive and authentic menu. The owners are ever-present to make sure every detail is correct. If you want brief but traditional tableside entertainment and love cheese, I recommend the traditional saganaki as your appetizer. As for your main meal, anything you can think of in the way of traditional Greek cuisine, from seafood to lamb to filo wrapped whatsits, you'll find here and enjoy. They serve the same veggies with every meal and they look a lot like those from a steam bag.. usually carrots and potato. My meat eating friends liked the items they ordered just fine. One of the Best Mediterranean restaurants in the DMV, from the minute we walked in we are greeted by the entire staff and owners. We were seated fast without any wait, our waiter was extremely helpful and friendly he suggested some dishes that were his favorite which is so important. Sometimes you go into restaurants not knowing what to order. He asked what I liked as far as food and I told him chicken and he recommended the Chicken Kabob which was absolutely amazing, the chicken had been marinated overnight for sure, you can taste the flavors one your 1st bite. The pita was warm and fresh, the feta was super delicious tasted like it was home made which I haven't tasted in a long time. The rice was perfect and the carrots were sweet and complimented the plate perfectly. Let's not forget about the salad, THE DRESSING is home made and to die for, we asked if they sold bottles because this is a dressing I would pour all over my foods. The ouzeris mezedes includes two small shot glasses of ouzo. Let me say the tarama was on point and better than that of some of the fancy Mediterranean places in DC. The tzatziki and fava were great as well. Very much like how they piped these on cucumbers with a side of bread. No dip goes to waste. Dolma was decent. Four of us visited this authentic Greek restaurant on January 23, 2025. The atmosphere places you in an actual small Greek island, missing the water view though. There is a very nice outside for spring and summer also. We shared the cheese Saganaki which was flamed at the table, and very tasty. The Greek salad was very fresh and full of ripe tomatoes, feta, and all the other delicious veggies. The grilled octopus appetizer was fabulous. We split the fish of the day Bronzino with lemon potatoes and Veggies. We added a side of the famous green beans with tomatoes, which was excellent. The lamb shank was enjoyed by our other friends and also was delicious. This is our second time dining here we specifically drove from another state to visit this restaurant.
