Food is from the mountainous region of Poland. If you like Polish cuisine, this place would interest you. The menu requires some knowledge of Polish food with some offerings being familiar while others may require some exploration. We were two couples dining on a weekday evening. Two people had plum stuffed pork which was very good, one had the pork loin and broccoli which was also good. I had the schnitzel which was not to be confused with German or Austrian schnitzel. It was two small loaves of a mix of beef and pork which resembled more of a meatloaf. It was a bit bland but satisfactory. It came with mashed potatoes. Several sides of Polish sauerkraut, beet salad, and what appeared to be a fermented carrot salad were included. We shared an appetizer platter of pirogies, kielbasa, and something I couldn't identify, but it was all very tasty. This is not BYOB because they have a full bar. The ambiance has a Bavarian flavor and is squeaky clean and neat. The food is hearty and flavorful im what I would describe as peasant style. Spectacular and authentic Polish restaurant. My group of friends like to visit restaurants from their backgrounds. It was my time to expose my friend group to Polish cuisine, and boy is this the place to do it! We were immediately greeted by the authentic decor, furniture, and outdoor space of a Highlander restaurant in Poland. The furniture is hand carved and there are outfits and decorations straight from the motherland. You feel like you are in your grandmother's home- and in a good way! There is something to look at and admire around every corner. Our waitress was so welcoming and patient while we decided on a variety of orders. She greeted us with a warm smile, gave us plenty of time to select from the menu, and provided top-notch recommendations. The food - don't get me started. This is as good, if not better, than what I eat in Poland. We tried soups (the żurek- sour, but not overwhelming, well presented in a bread bowl, and with delicious boiled egg- and the red barszcz- a tangy beet soup), a "sampler platter" with gołąbki (mini stuffed cabbage with tomato sauce for pouring to your liking), and grilled kielbasa. We also opted for the rye bread, lard, and half sour pickles. Sounds odd, but don't knock it till you try it! It's not what you expect, very rich and filling. For my entrée, I had a thinly sliced breaded pork cutlet with mashed potatoes on the side and "mizeria" (Polish side salad with cucumbers, dill, and sour cream). It was so fresh and light. I loved it because it reminded me of summers with my grandma. The drinks were colorful, well presented, and strong! Definitely worth their $12+ price. Overall, this spot is a hit. There is plenty of parking on the street or across the street at the library. Everything from the service, ambiance, presentation, to the freshness and taste of the food was top-notch. My daughter was home from college and I took her on my Saturday northern NJ food run. I decided on lunch at Tatra Haus, my daughter hasn't had much Polish food and this place is great. Our waitress Olivia was friendly and professional, solid recommendations throughout the meal. We went with fried pierogi for an appetizer, absolutely divine! My daughter played it safe with the chicken cutlet and fries but she enjoyed it very much and said that the seasoning differed from an Italian cutlet. I took advantage of the weekend special and had the mountain dumplings with mushroom gravy and side of goulash. Certainly a heavy dish but it was outstanding! Came here during the week with my girlfriends and we had a great time. When you walk in, you are taken to a cute little Polish restaurant The atmosphere is super cozy. Tatra Haus is my go-to spot for Polish food. The restaurant strongly reminds me of Zakopane, with a distinctly Góralski atmosphere that I really enjoy. The food is generally good, though on occasion the quality can be a bit inconsistent, so that may be an area worth refining. The drinks are very good, especially their house-brewed Tatra beer. During the winter months, I highly recommend the Grzaniec. Overall, it's a pleasant place with a great ambiance and, in my opinion, the best Polish restaurant in the Tri-Borough area. read more

Another A-Plus dinner at Tatra House. The atmosphere alone makes it a great spot for a night out. It's really unfair how good the food is. It ruins all other Polish food for you. This time around we tried the sampler platter with stuffed cabbage kielbasa and pierogis. All of them were the best I've ever had. The mini stuffed cabbages will be dreamt about for a month. They are delicate and flavorful and didn't even neeed the sauce they come with. The kilebasa was on another level. ive been eating kielbasa my whole life and not really loving it. This I loved!! Pierogis were perfectly cooked and also didn't need the sour cream or mustard. We also tried the potato pancakes. They were a 10/10. Perfection!! The rack of lamb was also amazing. Although next time we will get the balsamic glaze on the side. Would like some bites of it plain. The pork stuffed with plums I'm told was also a winner. I didn't personally try. I had the chicken Kiev. Now it takes a while for them to make it so when you order it expect a 40 minute wait on it. Which is a little long in my opinion to wait on food. That said it's another great dish. The onion soup which is similar to French onion couldn't have been better. Think French onion but thicker and slightly different flavoring. Only things I don't love from here are some of the sides. Didn't care for the fried cabbage or the mashed potato's. The cabbage is a bit too bitter and mushy and the potato's are dry and don't have much flavor. My favorite side was the carrot cole slaw. I could eat a 5 pound bucket of it. Came here with my girlfriend while we were on a walk, and it was nice to come back here after a long time, since the only other time was years ago with my parents. We both had fried pierogis and WOW were they lovely! Not only the food was good, but the interior was super charming. Tatra Haus- What a wonderful Polish treat on a cold Autumn evening! We called late Saturday afternoon for an early evening reservation for two. We could hear that the place was already bustling but after a moment of checking they were able to graciously accommodate our reservation request. Parking is a off-street and we were lucky to grab the very first parking spot next to the restaurant. Upon entering, we noticed the place was lively and super cute! The gentleman at the podium was dressed in traditional polish garb and quickly and warmly saw us to a cozy table for two in the middle of the restaurant. The table had our name and the time of the reservation. This place is buttoned up! He let us know the seasonal drink special was a wonderful mulled red wine with spices and fresh orange slices. I had this lovely seasonal beverage and it was fun and warming. Also, this place offers non-alcoholic beer (Heineken Zero) and this was nice to see. The starters were the star of the show for sure! We had the Tatra Trio and it was nothing short of AMAZING. Everything on the platter was an absolute ten. There were three fried cheese pierogis with a generous amount of sweet caramelized onion, tender stuffed cabbage, and a tasty piece of grilled kielbasa. There were no shortage of condiments as the platter came with sides of mustard, ketchup, sour cream, and a tasty tomato sauce. We loved it! We also asked for the potato pancake entree with sheep's cheese as our second appetizer and with the sides of sour cream and apple sauce it did not disappoint. We mutually decided that when we came back we would do the appetizers the exact same way. Perfection! For dinner we had the chicken Kiev and the pork loin with apricot and plum. The chicken Kiev was an impressive large potion and when I sliced into it the yummy filling of cheese and herb oozed out. The pork with apricot and plum was satisfactory but next time we would probably go for the lamb chops or the salmon. I did very much like the side of homemade pork gravy for the mashed potatoes, though. We didn't see it on the dessert menu but we asked our waitress about any pierogis they would offer for dessert. We were so glad we did! They offer strawberry, blueberry, or a mixture of the two. We of course got the mixture and they appeared freshly made to order. They were perfectly steamed with a nice drizzle of berry sauce, whipped cream, and assorted fresh berries such as strawberry, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Yum! This was the perfect way to end our meal. If you a looking for a comforting and fun date night location, Tatra Haus is a smart recommendation. The service is sharp and the host made sure to check on us a few times to make sure we had everything we need. It's a place that's comfy-casual, and gives festive vibes in the best way. Named for the mountains that separate Poland and Slovakia, this family-owned establishment is located on Main Avenue in Wallington. Since it's street parking, we were able to park across the street at the public library. Upon arrival at Tatra Haus as first-timers tonight for dinner, my partner and I were greeted by the host/owner, Sebastian, and made our way to a busy main dining room to our table. Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends, and can be easily made by calling the restaurant. The interior is designed as a Highland chalet with traditional, ornate, hand-carved wood furniture and folk art decor. The menu focuses on the regional cuisine from the south and mountains of Poland, specifically Zakopane. Written in Polish with English translations, it has some familiar items such as borsch, pierogi, potato pancakes, etc. As an appetizer, we ordered and shared the potato pancakes, accompanied by apple sauce and sour cream. For our entree, we decided on the pork cutlet with mashed potatoes and cucumber salad, as well as the trout with mashed potatoes and vegetables. Complimentary rolls started our meal. The food came out hot, tasty, and the portions were huge. There were several birthday celebrations taking place, and we got the honor to hear the staff singing "Happy Birthday" in Polish to one of the celebrants. Dressed in traditional garb, the staff were friendly and attentive to every aspect of our meal, especially our server, Paulina. The price was comparable to the area. Our first visit was sparked by Robert Lewandowski's goal against Spain (Euro 2020) which deserved to be celebrated in style. Our second visit a few weeks later was because that first visit was spectacular. Third visit was a birthday party with nine strong - including six that were born in Poland and know their pierogi from their placki. The restaurant is beautifully designed (lots of natural wood furniture mixed with a bit of 'country' and homey vibes throughout), the staff could not be any more accommodating or delightful, and the food was wspaniale (wonderful). On the first visit I had a mushroom/potato/sour cream soup and potato pancakes - both were stunning. The second time around a 'weekend only' special that caught my eye and the mountain dumplings/goulash platter was easily one of the best meals I've ever had at a Polish restaurant. On the most recent visit I finally found an item that was a swing and a miss... their zapiekanka. (Imagine a Stouffer's frozen pizza but with toppings and sauce you'd never imagine on it, and that's a bit like Poland's version of "pizza toast".) I thought it might be my American taste buds but this didn't garnish many positive votes from the Poles in our party, either. The Mrs. (her and the family are straight-off-the-boat from Gdańsk - well over 700 kilometers from the Tatra Mountain region of Poland) made me promise that this place would not get less than a 5-star review after she had a seafood dish the first time out, and a chicken/noodle dish the second time out. The kids always enjoyed their food (they weren't adventurous the first visit but finally got comfortable to order some traditional grub on subsequent visits). The restaurant is divided between two rooms (one which has a bar that might sit about a dozen people) and a great outside patio. Good beer list (they make their own piwo which is really tasty and strong), solid selection of drink (and dessert) specials. Pricing is a bit higher (than some other Polska joints) but they're nailing the quality and portions sizes. First visit - the waitress only spoke Polish (thankfully wasn't an issue for us) - and she was incredibly sweet. Second and third visit the waitstaff were bilingual and super cool as well. If I had to gripe - the food does take just a bit too long to come out and that's because this place is always so busy. You'd be wise to call to make a reservation (on weekends at least) because they're always hosting parties. Looking for something different after a challenging day of tanning on the deck. Something other than the usual steaks or Italian or god forbid, the Tex-Mex chain... you know the usual Mexican dogfood mix. Chinese ?? Simply out of the question tonight. That's when it hit me! Polish food?? Hmmm, not all that familiar with this taste but what the hell we'll give it a try. Now, I've never actually went in this direction but we're running out of options in my area. As a newbie to this genre, I consulted Goggle and course, YELP and this offering came up. Looked interesting and close enough so off we went. First, much appreciated convenience was a fresh parking lot shared with the Wallington Library . A quick stroll across the street and enter through a really nice covered area with multiple picnic tables perfect for families to dine at weather permitting. You then enter the restaurant and are greeted by a very nice and warm hostess. The layout as you enter will be the bar on your right and dining area proper on the left, however; there are numerous tables in the bar area also (which by the way is much more quieter and a notch darker. The interior of the restaurant is very interesting to say the least. Carved heavy woods abound a beautiful wood floor and animal heads in the bar. Man cave theme. The negative of all this ambience Is sound. It is very loud in here, very loud. Menu consists of well, polish specialties. Our order started with chicken soup for me which was excellent but contained too much black pepper which to say, gave it an unnecessary bite. Order again?? Yes, but with no pepper instructions please,this time. Wifey ordered pirogi. These were small boiled and stuffed with potato. Not so good. Bland and also were accompanied by a small ramekin of fried onion swimming in butter $10.95 off kids menu. Next round ordered were potato pancakes accompanied by a little container of apple sauce and sour cream. Again, fried and not worth the price of $15.95. Wifeys entree. Pork cutlet with small mashed potatoes. Once again disappointing as it was deep fried My entree was stuffed cabbage. Again another major disappointment as I was hungry . 5 small (maybe 4" rolls) served dry with a side of tomato sauce. Tasteless and presented in an unconventional (to me ) style. Not worth $19.95. Overall, the place had either a new build or an extensive ( and expensive) amount of money put into it. Tatra Haus is an experience. It's really nice inside the table service while friendly is an abysmal maybe due to loud noise mentioned and orders take a lifetime. Will we be back? Honestly one of the BEST places around! Super authentic polish food with a beautiful interior. The food is fresh, flavorful, and pays homage wonderfully to true Polish dishes. I wish I took more pictures but my group and I were too busy enjoying the food. The service is spectacular. For beer lovers, the tatra haus lager is light & crisp. I ordered pork, which was tough and dry that even the mushroom sauce could not mask. My friend ordered fish, which was just ok, nothing more than that.
