My first and last time at TaTa Tacos. The outdoor patio was completely packed because of a birthday party; we had to eat inside. We kept looking for a waitress; finally, she acknowledged us, and I asked for water. She said OK, but got caught up with the party and lost track of us. She finally came over and took our order. A few minutes passed, and another lady brought our order of Quesadilla with cheese and steak, which was piping hot and good. I asked the second lady if I could order two tacos. She said, "What do you want to order?" and then said, "I'll tell the waitress to add it to your bill." I ordered a Chicken Tinga Taco and an Al Pastor taco. They were there in a few minutes, but I was disappointed with the size; they were what I would call "baby tacos," not regular-sized. It's as if you took a regular taco and cut it in half; not only that, but they were just average, nothing special. The Chicken Tinga was better than the Al Pastor, which had no flavor. I would suggest not going there on the weekends for two reasons: my Margarita was $14. Compared to $8.00 during the week, it's not as busy then. They should have had at least one more server, because our waitress pretty much focused on the birthday party. The only time we saw her again was when I asked for the check. The ambiance is traditional Mexican wall art, etc. The bathrooms could use a good cleaning. The second helper lady was nicer than the waitress. Great small cozy place to have a couple of drinks and enjoy a great meal. A bit pricey but well worth it and not as busy. The service was good, and the menu is small but tasty. We tried the classic steak burrito and it was ok, just not a fan of rice beans added. The taco salad was great and the home dressing went great with it. The service was very slow which was okay for us to an extent but there was a point that ALL the tables the servers had left upset because they waited a long time for their check. Ugh!!! The food!!! VEGANS AND VEGETARIANS beware. You are about to have your mind blown by this unassuming WONDERFUL gem. Our friends here in Chicago live within walking distance and they said it's their favorite local spot. Their beans and rice are vegan and WOW so flavorful as are their side of veggies. She said the nachos were awesome so I was all in with that and totally fine to have those fabulous veggies with the nachos without cheese and crema. But then my husband ordered the burrito made vegan and Claudia, who I believe was our owner and our server, said we can make cauliflower Al Pastor for is burrito and he said YES PLEASE!! And I quickly said may I please ALSO have that? And she said OF COURSE!! While we waited on our food we played Scrabble, as there were several game options like Operation, Connect Four and a few others. We also had VERY good and HUGE drinks!!!! My husband had a margarita with some fun green coloring for St. Patty's Day. I got the Spicy Margarita which was AWESOME. It actually had some kick to it, as most "spicy" margaritas I've had can only claim the Tajin rim is spicy. Our friends had a spicy Paloma and a mojito both of which are their regular when they go. When the food came I couldn't believe the size of my husband's burrito!! It was MASSIVE. But one of THE best burritos we have ever had. So flavorful and so good. It had just bright flavor on all the aspects of the filling, a crunchy exterior and the hot sauces they gave us on the side were AMAZING. So tasty and again full of flavor. I always tell people that simple is often the BEST when it comes to plant based. And this place proves it. I got a SHOVEL!! My nachos came on a shovel. Totally grease free, crispy and lightly salted so that you get flavor and crunch but not GREASE and an upset stomach. OR grease and WAY too much salt which steals the flavor of the food. The Al Pastor cauliflower was INCREDIBLE. So very good. I love spicy and I love good depth of flavor and we had it. What an incredibly delicious meal. Tata's is off Irving park with street parking but u think there meat be other parking in the back as well. The tacos were good but nothing that stands out. I tried an assortment of different tacos and the birria was l the best out of them. The others didn't really stand out. Margaritas were pretty good, they can replace any tequila with mezcal, big fan of that. It seems they have a trivia day during the week. I think it would be cool to check out. Where do I begin? So we're having a party and I decide to cater it from Tata's. I Google "Tatas Tacos Irving Park". I navigate to the website, find a package that suits my party size and budget. Before ordering, I call the store to make sure all is well. I leave a message at 2pm with an employee. They're busy so she calls me back at 7pm. We work out the package over the phone she asks me to enter the order online. She doesn't see it pop up, but she says it takes time. The charge goes through on my end. She says if the order doesn't pop up by the end of the evening, she'd call me back. I get a call at 9:45pm. She asks for the order number and assured me we are set for a 3pm pick-up the next day at 3pm. I stop worrying about the food and move on to my next to-do. The day I should be picking up the food at 3:00pm...I get a call from "The Manager Christina" at 2:30pm to let me know that I used an old website, and would need to reorder ... oh! And by the way... this isn't Tata's fault.... It's my fault... and my order is going to cost me an additional $250. WHAT??? How would I know this is an old website??? It was the first one that popped up in my Google search, had their logo and their locations. Oh and here's one of the many kickers...if I want a credit from The $200 I paid yesterday, I have to take it up with the company that they used to use ...it's out of their hands?!?! So essentially I paid about $200 to their old credit establishment that is still linked to them and active...I'm not sure if I can get tgat money back but I should go back online, use another by website pay $450 for the same package BUT it doesn't include beans, rice or guacamole ... that would be an additional charge. So going back to "how is this my fault? And shouldn't there be some middle ground". Christina the manager said "we'll I'm still letting you place your order and I provided you with the correct website". That's her middle ground? When I explain my disappointment she says "the owner is right next to me, she agrees with what I'm saying and this is all we can do ...so now that we have given you the correct website, can you please order? "...( so even though I've already been charged about $200 now let me charge you another $450 ?!?) Let me remind you, I ordered from Tatas because they have been reliable on the MANY occasions we have stopped there. Not because I could've foreshadowed what was about to go down... Typically, a restaurant that wants to keep their establishment in business would want to put their mistake right in some way to keep their customers happy or turn a potential bad review into a good one....NOPE not Tatas! They seem to be in it for the $ not the love. When I asked for a middle ground she accused me to trying to squeeze them for free stuff??? Well as one would expect, all my clients, family memebers and friends that I've told to check Tatas out will now be gettting a different message. We ended up ordering from Tuxpan. When I called and ordered essentially the same package it was $200 with a hearty tip. They were so thankful for the bulk order, they threw in a half tray of beans, rice and chips for FREE! I couldn't love Tata's more! My husband and I came for the first time last week and we can't wait to go back! First can we talk about the decor? It's so cute in there! Frida Kahlo art all over-OBSESSED. There is also a cute rooftop upstairs and a room that can be rented out for parties. We got the empanadas which were devine. I can't decide what flavor was my favorite. Tinga, picadillo, chorizo and potato, & cheese and potato-all devine with the most delicious chimichurri dipping sauce. The chips and salsa were so tasty. First and last time. Food overpriced and not that good. Chicken dry, enchiladas dry. Service was the worst we ever experienced. Our server Sandra (??) was almost non existent. Waited 15 minutes to get water and a menu from another server. Sandra took and delivered drink orders then disappeared. Although working all the tables around us she never came to take our order.(2 older women,). We had to wave down the other server who came over to take orders and subsequently serve them. No one ever asked if we wanted anything else or dessert etc. Had to wait another 20 minutes to even get a check which was wrong. Another wait to get it corrected at which point we decided first time for both of us -- no tip. However the check automatically added a gratuity although just 2 of us. Guess that's why the service wasn't too important to them because tip was included regardless. ONLY bright spot was entertainment. Hugo's Elvis performance was worthy of front row seats in Vegas! Ambiance - dead, we were the only table for 1.5 hours. Right before we left, another couple came in (Wednesday dinner service). Food - I get it, Mexican with a twist. We order fajitas. The green/red pepper were on the raw side, large cuts. Had to requested a knife to cut my own peppers and make fajita tacos (see image). Shrimp is not fresh (taste frozen). Guacamole taste a lot like preservatives - hard to eat, couldn't eat it. Drinks - beer and peach tea. The tea arrived in a tall can. Prices - I'm ok with the menu prices, just give us quality food to match the price. For me, it's food quality. We tried coming for Cinco de Mayo and it was a disaster. The demand was much higher than what they could produce. No big deal, I'll come back another day. And I did just that. Their service is great. I've never seen their staff not smiling, only thing I would say they need to work on is speed. The food took out a little longer than I would have wanted. They also have a lovely outdoor patio that you can enjoy on a sunny day. My son ordered carne Asada tacos. The beef was thick and very tender. Perfectly cooked and a must try. I ordered their "sirena." It came with bacon wrapped shrimp, pico de Gallo, pickled red cabbage, and chili aioli. The shrimp and bacon were perfectly cooked and tasted so delicious with all the ingredients. The taco is good on its own, the aioli and cabbage make the taco moist, so really no need to add salsa to make the taco even more runny. It's not needed and all the flavors are already there. My next taco "el chupacabra" sounded so good I had to order it. It came with their delicious carne asada, al pastor and chicken all in one taco. It also came with beans, rice, pickled onions and jalapeños. A very delicious taco and perfect idea to add three different meats to the taco. The red salsa goes well with this taco, but it is spicy. Would definitely both of these tacos again. Now before I get on to my next and last taco. I want to explain that I love spicy food. In just about every cuisine except for a few I eat it spicy. And the spiciest I've ever had would probably be a hot chicken sandwich in Nashville. So when I saw "la lorrona" on the menu, I knew I had to try it. First let me start with the translation for "llorona." Crybaby. The taco came with ghost pepper marinated chicken, lime pickled habanero & onions, topped with a toreado jalapeño all over rice and beans. Serving this thing should be illegal. It is no lie the spiciest thing I have ever eaten. It literally made me cry like a got damn llorona. I seriously doubt I'll order this again. They were quick to pick up out meals and would always check in on us. Ceviche & Chips: amazing!! The sauce and the amount of seafood and veggies were perfect. Would go back to get this. We ordered margaritas and beer. As someone else said the drink menu is extensive. The small margarita is in a normal size margarita glass. I ordered the lime and hibiscus margarita. We got carry out during the covid-19 pandemic. The food was ready right on time, which is always a huge plus for us. My husband said they were relatively busy on a Saturday evening, so they have good time management! We noticed right away that the portions are pretty small, and definitely on the expensive side for being so small. My taco came in one tortilla (when I feel typical is two corn tortillas), and the meat and toppings were sparse compared to other places. The meat on both my steak and pork were fatty cuts, too, which I personally dislike. The side of rice and beans, as they mention, are 1/2 cup portions, so definitely order your own! I wish I knew what happened to this place. Their food used to be amazing. Clearly made with time and care. Every part executed perfectly and the flavor combinations to die for. Now, it's a hard pass from me, especially since their food is overpriced for the quality. Chicken tinga dip and the Elote were both so spicy we could barely eat them, and we LOVE spicy. No'la taco fish came fried instead of grilled. Also, it was easily less than half the size of the piece of fish they used to put on them, while also having a much higher price tag. I understand one or the other, but not both. Steak in the tacos and burrito all had a burnt flavor. Don't know how, seeing it wasn't burnt. Dirty grill? Husband would not even eat the burrito it was so gross. Beans and onions in the Lortage used to pour out while eating. Now it's a dry taco to try to eat. The steak in the kids meal was so hard and dry it was inedible and on top of it the children's meal came missing rice. My teenager said the quesadillas tasted terrible and refused to eat more than one section. The chips were clearly extremely old or had sat out to get stale for hours on end. Tatas Tacos is located don busy Irving Park Rd, not too far from the Culver's. They have an outside seating area that would be great during a warm Chicago day, but definitely too cold when I came there on a dreary March evening. The dining area, I would call quaint, sitting about 45 people comfortably. It consists of mostly tables and chairs, and there are two wall mounted TVs. The kitchen is open-style, with staff members taking your order at your seat, and bringing the food to you. There is a table near the kitchen that has a select number of board games. The tables themselves, have blackboard toppers, so you can grab a piece of chalk and scribble on them while you're waiting on your tacos. Throughout the dining area, there are those carddboard photo-standins where you can take a picture with. The menu itself is comprehensive. As the name suggests, this place is known for their tacos, with many different unique sounding tacos, like "Bow chica bow wow" and "Smoked Hog". The menu is a laminated rectangular menu, sectioned in three columns. They have other things besides tacos, such as burritos and salads. I ordered the following: Guac and chips -- a decent sized amount of guacamole is the center of this dish's masterpiece, with tortilla chips surrounding the bowl Elote -- street corn, that was decent, but unfortunately wasn't the best I had. I felt it was somewhat watery and the combination of mayo, cheese, and paprika wasn't quite right. The slightly small puddle of liquid at the bottom of the bowl kind of convinced me as well. No'la taco -- blackened fish taco. The fish was grilled and spices were really good. I liked how there was just a good amount of coleslaw on it, that didn't overwhelm the taco itself. Quite tasty. Shrimp/Camaron taco -- I thought this was somewhat bland. The flavor didn't pop as much as the No'la taco. Frida taco -- grilled chicken with garlic, pickled cabbage, and lime. This was one of the better chicken tacos I've had. Bow Chica Bow Wow -- chorizo taco with pico de gallo. The chorizo was very flavorful and this was pretty good. The Tux -- tiny seared scallops, with ribeye steak. The scallops were small, and the ribeye steak was really soft. The flavors didn't quite match well, in my opinion. It sounded better than it tasted. Smoked Hog -- this taco had pork belly, guac, onions, and jalapeños. I really liked the taco and the pork belly was really tender. This was probably my favorite taco. Da' Harley -- this taco had smoked brisket on it. It came with jalapeno slices, which delivered a good amount of heat, but nothing too crazy All tacos were street style, corn tortilla tacos. I was pretty full after eating all them tacos. Service was A-OK. I felt bad for the staff, as it seemed like there was only one server/waitress for the entire dining area, but she was doing a good job tending to the customer patrons. The tacos were very creative but I've had better tacos. If you go down west on Irving Park for about a mile, check out CTA (Chicago Taco Authority). I feel like their tacos are better. Sorry, I'm just being honest. BATHROOM REVIEW: Located past the kitchen, the bathrooms are single stalled bathrooms, one for women and one for mens. I decided to check out TaTas Tacos since I live in the area. Let's start out with parking you cannot park in the back lot. You have to use street parking. We walked in and the place super hot and it was on a very hot day in Chicago. So we opted to sit outside. They did sit us down quickly and we ordered the horchata and Paloma - The horchata was very water down and the Paloma was awful which was very disappointing. I ordered the Carne Asada Taco, the shrimp taco and the Kraken. The Carne Asada taco was delicious, very flavorful but the tortilla was cold. The shrimp was not fresh and i could not even eat it because it smelled so bad. The Kraken which octopus taco and it was not fresh and pilling on the condiments didn't help. The servers looked exhausted and I felt so bad. They were very sweet. I was super disappointed by the food. I hope that they review their menu and focus on the freshness if offering seafood. First time getting delivery and patronizing this business, Tried a steak burrito and their elotis corn side dish. The steak burrito was pretty good. It was made to request without onions. The steak quality was decent, it was grilled with no char. Only hit one small piece of gristle, so they do a good job prepping the meat. The flour tortilla was warm and soft, no grease whatsoever. All the other ingredients were fresh and flavorful. The elotes corn side dish was really good. I've heard of this being made by vendors with ears of corn in some areas of the city. First time trying it and I liked it. My only quibble is that the green taco sauce was partially opened and spilled in the bag. The bag was good quality so the mess was contained. This was the mild sauce, so I had to use the red sauce or go without. The red sauce had quite a kick--good thing that I can handle the heat. Tatas tacos are lacking flavor. There are tons of delicious (sounding) tacos, but everything just tastes like tortilla. However, I got the molé chicken which was the best of the three I ordered. I'm no molé expert, but very tasty. The jibarito steak came as one piece of steak and I couldn't fold it to eat it like a taco. Also very overcooked. Couldn't taste the garlic at all. The plantain tortilla was hard to eat it was so chewy. The chile rellano taco was also so big I couldn't fold it - had to eat it with a fork and knife. It desperately needed salt because it didn't really taste like anything at all. A note on service. Me and my friend went 5/5/2021 so probably one of their busiest days. We sat outside and there was one server. Took her about 15 minutes to even look at us. We ended up ordering drinks and food at the same time. Our food came before our drinks, my food came about 8 minutes before my friend's, and it took us 20 minutes to get another drink after ordering it. I'm so happy we've found this little gem of a taco spot in Portage Park, and a little bummed that it took me so long. Better late than never! I went in on a Tuesday, and tried their 3 taco special w/ rice & beans for $13. The jibarito taco - a slice of steak on a plantain taco shell with lettuce, tomato, & garlic aioli. The chunk of steak looked big, and I was worried it would be chewy, but when I but in it was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The flavor was on point, and I loved the plantain shell! The chorizo con papas taco - 1st, the handmade tortillas they use are fantastic! They start with a generous layer of spicy chorizo, followed by their potato casserole, and finally sour cream. This is a delicious and hearty taco, for sure. The sirena taco - Bacon wrapped shrimp with pickled red cabbage, Chile aioli, & Pico de gallo. A lot of the time when I have bacon wrapped shrimp, the bacon overpowers the shrimp. Not the case here. The ingredient ratio delivered the perfect flavor from all of the ingredients. The interior is nice, and the staff was super helpful and courteous. I love the Frida mural out front! I can't wait to come back and try the other tacos, but next time I'll skip the rice & beans. They were good, but I'd rather save the stomach space for more tacos. They are also BYOB! read more

The food was good but not great. My burrito de pastor was good and the portion was reasonable but that was all. The restaurant didn't give any chips and salsa like other Mexican taco spots. My sister got flautas and they were pretty plain. All you tasted was potatoe and the corn tortilla. A lot of pictures are all really nice looking with all the extra sides... that right the sides are extra. The service there was a little below average and the waitress only came to the table twice the whole time. To take our order right away and give us a refill on the drinks. If you're looking for a more satisfying experience then go a little west to Central Ave and stop at Amigo Chino. You won't regret it... Happy eating read more

I've been here several times with my family. The food and drinks are great, the service is spectacular. My children love that they can draw on the tables using the chalk they provide at the restaurant. It's such a fun, family friendly spot. I recommend the jibarito tacos and the potato taquitos! read more

Love this new spot! Fresh food, extremely friendly service. The fish taco was crispy (not fried) and delicious. The corn tortillas are homemade and not grainy or too thick. We spied the vegetarian menu after we sat down, so don't miss it! We did try the cauliflower al pastor, and although I didn't love it, I'll be back to try something else soon! Love this new spot. The tacos here are usually good, though a couple of times, we did get hard tortillas that broke while trying to eat the taco. My favorites are the camaron, chorizo con papas and carne asada. But this place is over priced and the service is poor. My nephew and I ate here last Thursday evening and our waitress was just going through the motions. My nephew asked if she was angry or something, I didn't know. We got seated pretty quick but after that she was quite inattentive. We had to get her attention several times and she didn't seem very happy about it. She did not bring enough salsas, we didn't get flatware or enough napkins. She didn't check in to see if we needed anything. And then we had to flag her down for the check. Though she didn't deserve a tip at all, we left a smallish one. It's an ok place if you're in the immediate area but there's also Chicago Taco Authority down the street for boutique tacos and Amigo Chino in the other direction for traditional tacos. read more

This place was one of the few places on the street with outdoor patio dining during COVID. We had nice fire warmers by our table to keep us warm in the cold weather. The waitress was very welcoming and nice! The food was amazing too! We got a variety of tacos and ordered seconds as well. They play a lot of Spanish hip hop which I enjoyed while eating my meal. I recommend coming here for some early dinner or dinner! read more
