I heard from Block Club Chicago that they have had some trouble with getting customers due to the ICE raids. Since it wasn't too far away from me, I thought I would stop by and support a local business, especially during these times. While I have had nothing, but excellent experiences at the local Mexican Restaurants, I will say that this one had the best food! It starts with the chips and salsa which had some of the best salsas I have ever had at a Mexican restaurant. I am not the biggest Pico de gallo fan, but this one was really fresh! The red was surprisingly spicy, but still had a great flavor and the spicy green is an old classic! They have a decently good lunch menu which gets you the ol taco dinner, but in a slightly smaller size (two tacos, smaller rice and beans). That was fine by me as that was the perfect size for lunch and I didn't feel like I needed to take a nap. It was also plated extremely well, especially for a Mexican restaurant like this. I am not joking when I say that the beef tacos were outstanding. They were some of the best I have ever had. It also included some very fresh white onions that were diced perfectly. Certainly one of the best taco dishes I have had in the city. It was pretty empty when I went there, but the service was excellent and quick! Really no negative parts of the meal. The prices are a little high for some things (Jaritos), but that was offset by a cheap taco lunch! Food is great! The only bad thing is that they cheap out on the salsa. There is like 3 scoops per container with the chips. Had to ask for more about 5 times because they kept giving smaller portions of it. Once Covid happened, the quality and quantity of the food decreased. I was at this restaurant for dinner last night had a steak burrito dinner !! When I got home started felling sick I then went to the hospital and turned out to be food poisoning !!! THIS WAS THE ONLY RESTAURANT I ATE AT !! I called the restaurant to complain about what happened when I saw the cooks as I walked in the restaurant cleaning the floor and walls while cooking!!! At Las Casitas food is as fresh as a daisy! They like the customer and offer great service. Menu has many appealing items and the lunch special should be particularly mentioned. Combo plates like flautas, taco combos, Chile rellano combo plates rock. Burrito as big as a football is lauded for good quality meat and great prep. Tasty home made salsas. I miss El Gordo's. I miss the family feel. Same menu, same ingredients, but the service took a nosedive. I usually always opt for takeout and always order the same thing but consistently get wrong items, sloppy presentations and disgusting food. Ordered my usual carne asada quesadillas on corn tortillas; instead I received several what appeared to be quesadillas but were cheese, carne asada and BEANS ?!? stuffed between two tortilla CHIPS (or tostada shells). Gross! I went against the grain and tried a carnitas taco which arrived sans the cheese I ordered and paid for. The meat was translucent whitish and smeared to the touch...imagine smegma on a taco. Just abhorrent! I was really brokenhearted when El gordos closed but was happy to learn the newbies would keep the menu and cooks. Las Casitas is a tradition Mexican restaurant in the Belmont Craign neighborhood. The service is good and I really enjoyed the food I tried there so far. The restaurant is situated on Belmont Ave which is busy street but street or side street parking should be easy to find. Additionally if you go into the alley behind the restaurant there is a small gravel parking lot and a door where you can enter from the back so no need to walk around. Inside there's a bar and a number of tables, the place is colorful and has murals on the wall.They are BYOB which is really cool cause a Modello and a steak is a real great pairing. I really like the chips and salsas they serve you while you wait. The chips are generic but the salsas are real nice. There are three different ones, a spicy red salsa, a mild pico de gallo (fun fact a friend told me pico de gallo stands for beak of the rooster) , and a salsa verde. I'm personally a big fan of the spicy red salsa. So far I have tried only the Chilaquiles for breakfast and the Tampiquena for dinner. I highly recommend either of these dishes if you like steak. I was told they serve Chilaquiles all day so you can have it at at any time. The way the skirt steak is cooked is perfect with nice char marks, almost all fat cooked off and the flavor is juicy and colorful. As I'm writing this my mouth is watering just thinking about it and I want to go back. Maybe I will... The service has been great both times, very attentive and server was real nice and accommodating. They do have child seats so the place is child friendly. The first time we went there with a friend who has a very young child, they were very nice to bring things like rice for him to eat and he threw food everywhere but the server cleaned up and despite us being apologetic she's said none is necessary. Las Casitas has been good to me so far. I can't wait to go back and try different options off the menu and I'll make sure to take some pictures next time. Do read more

Went for dinner for the first time since the new owners took over. I order the 4 piece flauta dinner with chicken. The dinner came with sour cream, tomatoes, guacamole, lettuce, rice, beans, and the 4 chicken flautas. Over all the chicken flautas had no flavor, the rice was over cooked, and the beans were salted. The tortillas that the flautas came with had a really bad after taste. Sadly to say I could not eat my dinner since it was tasteless and had a really weird after taste after a few bites. read more

What a great little restaurant Las Casitas is. The staff here is very friendly and welcoming. We came to dine in and were offered a table right away. They start you off with chips and 3 different kinds of salsas. They a have a large plates on their menu as well as your typical Mexican offerings like tortas, burritos and tacos. We didn't come with a big appetite, just wanted something small but filling. We both decided on their Carne Asada Torta. The torta came with carne Asada, lettuce, tomatoes, beans and sour cream with a very fresh and soft bread. This torta was amazing. By far one of the best tortas I've had in a very long time. The carne Asada was so tender and flavorful. It was arranchera meat and they didn't skimp at all. I'll definitely be returning for their tortas but I'm curious to see what the rest of the menu taste like. read more

Place is pretty good ... I drove past and was sad el gordo has been closed since 2020. I decided to give it a go. Got a steak burrito which had tons of seasoned steak .. only issue was I didn't get much onions / cilantro. But it reminded me of the old Gorlo ways. Waitress was friendly and attentive. 8/2/22. First time here since it was El Gordo. Decided to give them a chance. I ordered a few tacos (Steak & chicken). Immediately disappointed to hear they come with lettuce, tomatoes and the other wypipo toppings... so I ordered mine with cilantro and onions. The tacos were just ok. Little to no seasoning on the meat. Pretty good amount of meat though, especially the chicken ones. I just wish they were seasoned better. Tortillas were ok. Green salsa was watery AF. read more

I asked if they can set up another table she said OK, later she was like oh, it's $100 I was like hold up let me make sure this is OK with the other party before you set up as I was talking they were already setting up. Used to frequent when the old owners "Gordos" had it and it was way better. Portions are much smaller now and not as high quality and they actually charged us $.75 for limes plus a 2.5% "service charge". Ordered carne asada and was served a thin slice of arrachera that was oversalted. Will not return. read more

Lunch delivery was certainly fast, but the Milanese was a bit off - not sure if it was old oil or that the meat was frozen and then cooked? Tamale was excellent as were the beans and rice and both red and green salsas were very good! I'd definitely try this place again! read more

They got my order wrong and I called them to let them know. I ordered a burrito with no lettuce and no tomato and both were in there. When I told them that they asked me to bring the burrito back. Mind you, I do not live close so it would be a hike back east to the restaurant. When I told them that, they proceeded to ask "can you bring it tomorrow?". This is honestly such a ridiculous response to the issue and clearly they think I'm being untruthful. I had been a patron of El Gordo (the name they had before the new owners took over) since my childhood, but the new ownership has really tarnished what the restaurant used to be. There is almost always an issue with my order but I still try to give them the benefit of the doubt, just to be reminded that I have to stop giving these people chances anymore. It's unfortunate that the food is good but the service and care for customers is abysmal. read more

After El Gordos closed last summer after 28 years in business, my family, friends, employees & myself couldn't find any Mexican restaurants in the area that compared to the taste, quality & service of El Gordos. So when I found out that a previous employee(s) reopened at the same location with a new name: Las Casitas. We gave it a try. So far, my employees and I (6hungry mechanics) have ordered takeout twice. We all love the flavor, the quality & the quantity of deliciousness they pack into each burrito, taco, torta, enchilada & nachos!! We all agree that everything we've tasted so far is as good, of not better than El Gordos. We will be ordering from Las Casitas at least once a week from now on. Was there last week - I only took a few bites and could not eat any more. The rice and refried beans had absolutely no flavor. The chicken flautas had a really odd taste- the chicken tasted old and the tortillas tasted & smelled like Palmolive dish soap. I've been looking for great tasting carne asada and I've found my spot. There are plenty of options in Belmont Cragin but I love that this is a family run restaurant. Drove by this restaurant and saw the now open sign and took a chance to try the place. Not sure how it'd turn out however I was pleasantly surprised with the experience. They are currently doing only to-go orders and I got three tacos and and cheese enchiladas. They're we're fresh and very authentic because I'm a sucker for Mexican food. Living in Chicago you get to try different recipes of the same item and you start to learn how to judge the food.
