Time for a re-review given our numerous return visits. Tasca is a 4.5 for NYC, rounded up to a 5. The restaurant is an incredibly well oiled machine that has hired (and, we're glad to see, often retained) great staff. They have pleasant sidewalk seating, a lovely bar area, proletariat seating (smaller tables, closer together) in the back, and a room downstairs, which I've never seen used. On a recent evening, our server, Amanda, was affirmatively kind to our pup and brought her water without us requesting. Serving sizes have slightly reduced over time, while prices have gone up just a smidgen. But that's really par for the course everywhere and Tasca has done this in a reasonable way that does not feel exploitive. They have a wood fired oven that they're not afraid to use. Recent specials of Mediterranean sea bass (two filets served over spinach with yucca; $39) and ribeye (with yucca and demi-glace sauce, $68) were smoky and perfectly cooked to our requested temperature over an open flame. One of our littles always seems to gravitate to the churrasco (grilled skirt steak, yucca fries, Caribbean mojo, chimichurri; $39), which he happily devours without prompting. The other little is in an anti-food phase, probably as a result of orthodontic tortures. But she still more or less enjoys the suprema de ave (free range chicken breast, goat cheese, Medjool dates, pine nuts, kale; $29). The chicken is tender and moist, the salad-like filling sweetish. The combination somewhat suggests Thanksgiving dinner. Desserts are crowd pleasers. The passionfruit cheesecake ($14) has been a long-time favorite for its light, almost panna cotta like texture and impressive presentation. Trufa de chocolate ($14) is an almost alarmingly large tennis ball of dense, creamy chocolate covered in sprinkles. Wines by the bottle seem to be well curated based on everything we've tried, though the 3x markups seem a little excessive even for the city! Glad to see this place alive and kickin' even on a weekday. Someday we'll get back for the weekday happy hour at the bar sans dependents. read more

Recommend highly. Service is superb. Menu is interesting with many good choices plus several specials not on the menu. Food is well prepared, interesting and very good. Wine choices also really nice and tasty. The space is large, so it is very comfortable and easy to have a conversation. Staff is attentive on filling water glasses and cleaning table between courses. As a main course my wife and I had the paella Valentiana for two. It was bad. The rice had very little safran and stuck to the bottom of the pan. The ingredients were of poor quality, there were only three or four muscles badly overcooked. All in all it was the worst paella we ever had. We can make a better one at home and we will, because we will never return to Tasca. The service however was correct. read more

Went for a Sunday brunch with a group. As based on their website this brunch was set up as a Prix fixe menu, choose from a list of apps and a list of entrees. Two drinks included. The desserts were sold separately. So hey the space itself was pretty nice. Restaurant is large and well decorated. There is a large downstairs area as well that wasn't being utilized when we were there but would be very intimate dining when in use. The food itself was delicious. I had some of the croquettas de calamar and the albóndigas as a starter. Go with the croquettes. The churrasquito was similarly good. My issue with all of the plates save maybe what I saw from the French toast is that there just isn't enough food with the meal overall - I had eaten not that long before showing up at the restaurant and still felt like I was left wanting more. The coconut tres leche was not good and I would honestly avoid it if you actually like tres leche. Did not hit the way a traditional piece does. Separately ordered an Empire Found drink. I actually love mezcal and rye but this drink also did not hit. Overall it was an ok meal but eat before and plan to go to an ice cream spot nearby after instead of the desserts here. read more

We had an insane experience at Tasca a few weeks ago. My purse was stolen out from under the table while dining on the patio. We informed the manager on staff and asked if we could view the security camera footage. He told us to view the footage we would need to call the police. We didn't want to call the cops because, it's New York, there is no way that the bag is coming back, but we called 311 per his request. We were then transferred to 911 by the dispatcher and we waited for the police to arrive. From the time that my bag was stolen until the time the police came (about 40 minutes) the manager never came out to speak to us, we had to inform him of the situation and then he ignored us. The waitress just kept bringing us the check and not asking if we needed anything, food, water, etc. Once the police came we filled out a report while they watched the footage with the manager. After that, the owner came outside and started yelling at us. At one point he got on his knees and asked my boyfriend "if this is how he likes it"....it was shocking. I started filming after that because he was clearly unhinged. He never apologized until I started filming him, at which point he started going off on a tangent about how he needs to support his 3 kids from the restaurant. As a former member of the service industry, I understand the impact of poor reviews, but this situation was handled WILDLY unprofessionally. The police had to calm the owner down while he was screaming at us. I can only imagine how the owner treats his staff if this is how he handles a guest who was just robbed on his property. I still wonder why he was so upset, since his manager was the one who told us to call the police. The whole ordeal was extremely upsetting and embarrassing. read more

We had dinner here on a Saturday night. The service is friendly and ambiance casual with a Spanish theme. The cocktail menu has some interesting though not particularly balanced drinks. The food attempts a fusion of spanish and carribean flavors that don't always work. The duck was altered in a mashed yuca and sweet plantain base that did not really work. The plantain croquettes were good. The setas y gambas (mushroom and shrimp) was very good. The paella, with mussels, clams, shrimp and chicken was passable. read more

Went here for dinner midweek. Food was excellent. Great apps including empanadas. The beef one was exceptional. Also had a salmon crudo app which was on special. Many specials at this place. Fish is a specialty I went with halibut which came with an awesome leek based sauce. My friend had a steak and it came with an awesome sauce too. Desert was a banana bread pudding in a sugary sauce again. This place has sauce!! Service nice and friendly quite attentive. A friend of ours and her fiancee were coming up to see the Glamonatrix (Dita von Teese) show and they invited us to go with them. Unfortunately her fiancee couldn't make it so we had an extra seat at the theater where we could put our bags. I made reservations for this restaurant based on the NYC Restaurant Week website. It was within a 10min walk from the theater. We intended to do restaurant week however, on the day of, I got held up at work and had to Uber. My husband, who works from home, was able to go with our friend to the restaurant and I met them there. They had tried to find another place when I was running late, but I think this is a place where if you make a reservation, you have to put a credit card down, so we stuck with the place. Besides, I was only 12min late. However, given the show started at 8, we didn't have time to do restaurant week. My friend and I shared the octopus appetizer which was really good. She said it was some of the best octopus she's ever had. We also had oysters. My husband doesn't like octopus or oysters so he didn't have any. For entree, I went with the seafood stew that came with saffron rice (it's on the side in its own bowl and it's a good portion), my husband got the skirt steak, and she got the duck. My friend said she doesn't get to eat duck often and seized the opportunity to eat it here and she said it was extremely good. I also tried some and I have to say it is super tender and flavorful, the best duck I've had thus far. My husband's steak was also really good. My seafood stew was a lot more than I expected. The saffron rice comes in a separate bowl and I think you're supposed to scoop some rice and then some seafood, but I ate all the seafood first. My only complaint is that the rice and seafood stew was really salty. The seafood itself was incredibly fresh, but the broth it was in was too salty for my taste. The rice was also good, it was just salty. I wish we had the time for restaurant week but I'm glad we didn't change the restaurant because I was really impressed with the food. It is pricey but I think it's worth the price and also worth the trek to the UWS. read more

Absolutely delicious! Made a reservation for Friday evening. Ordered the white sangria and half a dozen oysters to start, then the grilled octopus appetizer and the paella for 2. Note that the paella takes ~45 minutes to make after the order is placed, as it is made to order, and everyone in your party must be present in order to place any orders for food. Tasca far exceeded my expectations for our Valentine's dinner. Upon entry there were red, pink and white balloons everywhere. We were greeted and seated immediately. They were offering a prefixe menu with options for every palette. I ordered the seafood bisque and babbbbbbbbbyyyy let me tell you something! DEVINE! For my main course I ordered the Argentinen skirt steak with yucca fries. My date ordered the sea bass and I can honestly say that everything we ordered including our drinks was perfect. They offered us a cucumber, mint and sherry chilled shot to clean our palettes between dishes. I honestly can't say enough about this place and I will definitely return. I made reservations for this spot, which was fairly easy to do. I was greeted by very friendly host and hostess. Loved that they had a boxes of toothpicks and matches (my favorite!). Once seated, we had a lot to catch up on but also choose from. They had an extensive wine list and they had restaurant week going on. They had oysters as well which was extremely delicious. We decided to move forward with the Restaurant Week menu $59 per person. I thought it was great presentation but food was not that great. Per the waiter's recommendation, I got Seta y Gambas. It came piping hot in a play plate. The flavors and mushrooms were delicious, but there were literally 3 tiny cut up pieces of shrimp. After taking Spanish for several years, I was pretty sure gambas meant shrimp, so when I didn't see any, I literally looked for it and realized that there were very few pieces of shrimp. Honestly, I never count or make a big deal, but it immediately made me think that they skimped out on the shrimp because I chose the restaurant menu. If that's the case, I'd be very disappointed in the staff and decision makers. Next course was the steak. The presentation was beautiful again and it was cooked perfectly and the sauces and veggies made the flavors come out. However, the dish came room temperature borderline cold. The yucca fries were a bit dry, but I may be biased since I'm not a huge fan of yucca. My friend had the salmon which was honestly way tastier. That was my original choice, but when I asked the waiter if I should get the chicken, steak and salmon, he suggested the steak. Last but not least -- the dessert. I ordered the passionfruit cheesecake, which came with a berry sorbet. The presentation was spectacular, but the cheesecake was just meh. The sorbet was the best part. The bathroom was downstairs and I saw a whole new dining area and in the way back, there was a private room with a fireplace. It looked so nice for an intimate party or dinner. All in all, I loved the ambiance and presentation (obviously haha), but the taste was just not there and didn't wow me, which is why I couldn't give a top notch score. I did go on a off day (Tuesday), so maybe it'll be better on weekend. read more

I was passing through the city for a couple of weeks and found myself on the upper west side after a day out at museums. We chose this spot after strolling around and liking the menu compared to some of the others around. Great choice. Fhe indoor ambiance was candle lit and beautiful, set up to be not too loud but still cozy. The service was absolutely impecable. Super friendly staff that helped with recommendations and made sure we were satisfied the entire time. Food and menu followed suit. Great, well sized spanish tapas and entrees - with rotating specials. We tried the salmon and octopus special. Salmon was to die for, having a very delicious sauce on the vegetables. I absolutely loved this place -- so beautifully decorated on the inside and it's the perfect spot for a date night. Lights are dim and this place is very intimate and romantic. Our server made the experience that much better as he was so kind and attentive. If you like fruity drinks and gin, I recommend trying the oceanographer. For starters, we ordered the red fish (or red snapper, I can't remember but it was from the night's specialty menu) and the 4 oz grilled octopus. They offer bigger portions of the grilled octopus as well. The ceviche was zesty and every bite was perfection. I've ordered grilled octopus countless times at many different restaurants but the dish was so unexpectedly tender -- by far my favorite part of the meal! The paella was so filling and good, however, I can't offer any useful opinions as it was my first time trying it. But it had great flavor and the seafood tasted really fresh. My only complaint was that the mussels were overcooked. They were shriveled up and were almost nonexistent but overall, I really enjoyed the dish. Great new addition to the UWS. Chill Ambience , Perfect Playlist , Attentive Staff! We brought our own wine. The cork fee was a reasonable $35. I literally wanted to try at least five or six things, actually there was nothing on the menu that didn't sound superb. We decided on the octopus small plate and a paella. Words can't describe it. This is a delightful fusion mix of Caribbean and Spanish cuisine, and I can say this after living in both regions. It made me miss the islands! Loved the space and airiness. The tables weren't cramped and there was a nice bar area in the front and dining area in the back. I believe there's also a party room downstairs. The service was impeccable. There were water fillers and busboys who kept an eagle eye on everything to make sure water was always full and tables were cleared right away and wiped down after each course. The waiter seamlessly rattled off the half dozen specials with all the special sauces and sides they come with. We didn't understand some of the ingredients but they all sounded good. We ordered 3 items off the special menu and got the beets salad from the regular menu. The food plating is beautiful and instagram ready. The vibrant colors of different sauces pop like a painting. The food was all tasty but we found little issues with the dishes. The chopped beets in the beet salad was too cold like it's been sitting in the fridge for hours before serving and there was about a teaspoon of goat cheese that we discovered half way into eating it. The halibut was a little dry and the dish had mushrooms that were cold while other elements were warm. Maybe some like the variation of temp in a dish but we weren't a fan of it. Although everything was decent and the atmosphere was nice, it still makes us miss Aquagrill in SoHo (may it RIP). The seafood is ok but missing some finesse and the price for what you get was off putting. We'd be glad to pay to pay $45 for a thinner tail end of a halibut if it wowed us but it fell short. Overall a good dining experience but still searching for a great seafood restaurant that would rival Aquagrill. read more

My husband and I I went to eat at Tasca as we done many times before on November 3. When it came to order As we had done before we wanted to substitute the Yuca for tostones. Our waiter Rodrigo told that it could not be done. We explained that we have been there many times and not once they have stated " There are no substitutions" I mentioned a specific waitress and they (Rodrigo and the owner) threw her under the bus! Rodrigo said he was not as friendly as the female waitress. He continued to argue with us!! We decided not to stay for diner. The owner tried to convinced me that that is the policy of the restaurant. and defended Rodrigo. Not true! We have several men waiters that have complied with our substitutions without any hesitation.The owner insisted that the female waitress was told many times that there no substitutions. He wanted me to give him the name of a male server.(I guess he did not believe me) we would never asked for substitutions if they were accepted many times before. Even though the owner apologized, I did not feel it was a very sincere apology. There are hundreds of restaurants in NYC that treat customers with appreciation and respect! I ordered the stuffed chicken and absolutely loved it - perfectly cooked and seasoned. My wife got the Churrasco, which was also delicious. Came across the restaurant while looking for a place to have a nice dinner after a long week. Casually strolled in and ended up sitting by the ledge next to the door facing the street, they were probably the best seats in the house. Interior is very chill and hip, which enticed us the most. Ordered a bunch of appetizers, drinks, and a few main courses to share and everything was superb. Overall enjoyed the entire experience. Waiters were very attentive, the bathrooms were super clean, the food was delicious and the lounge music playing in the background was great. The only part that can be improved would be the food coming out earlier - took over an hour between appetizers and main course to be served - maybe kitchen was overwhelmed I have no idea.
