One of my children went there in the 1990's, and I've wondered, does Tarwater still not have any playground equipment for the "older" grade school kids ? It was unfair and sad. The "older" kids weren't allowed on playground equipment at all, and if they tried to use it were treated like criminals. No exaggeration. They were yelled at. Playground equipment was provided for only the younger grades. The older grade school kids {4th,5th and 6th grades} were treated harshly if they tried to play on the playground equipment.
When I was growing up, the grade school I attended had two playgrounds. One playground for the 1st through 3rd graders, and another playground area for 4th, 5th and 6th grade. But at Tarwater, the "older" kids were expected to just sit through lunch recess with nothing to do, they could only watch the younger students having fun. It was sad to see. I know because I was there as a parent. During lunch recess I saw the older children sitting around,bored and inactive. All grade school students are young enough for playground equipment, all deserved to have fun and exercise during lunch recess. Why didn't Tarwater get funds for more playground equipment ? If I'd had the money I would have bought the equipment myself. Shame on Tarwater.
One other problem at that school -- no one from the school was ever out to ensure that students walking home were safe from the vehicles of parents pulling into the parking lot to pick up their kids. Students on foot had to cross in front of the entryway to the parking lot where cars pull in. While waiting for my child, I used get out of my car and go act as an unofficial crossing guard for the other children. I talked to the school about it and they told me they'd give me crossing guard equipment ! But I couldn't do it every day. Why wasn't Tarwater more concerned about safety ? All I can say is I hope the school has improved. read more
