My two sons are currently in 5th grade at Kyrene de las Lomas Elementary School and have…read moreexperienced ongoing bullying for the past two years. A few months ago, one of my sons was physically assaulted when another student choked him. The incident was dismissed by the school as a minor issue, despite the seriousness of the act. More recently, my two sons and one of their friends were verbally threatened by three other students. I immediately reported this to the principal, office staff, and district administration. Although the threatened fight never occurred, the response from the school has been inconsistent and inadequate. The principal initially stated that students would rotate days for playing soccer during recess but later reduced my sons' access to only two days per week, without explanation. After I raised concerns about the choking incident and the threats, I believe the principal began retaliating against my children. During a school bingo event, my son and his friend each had valid bingos that were confirmed by surrounding students, yet the principal publicly denied them multiple times. The school promotes itself as a "no violence" campus, but ongoing issues are not being properly acknowledged or addressed. I contacted the Board of Education and requested that the vice principal handle all future matters involving my children due to concerns of targeting and retaliation.

We have 2 boys at Islands and since day one at the front office, the two front office ladies Miss Brenda and Miss Shelley were super welcoming, nice and remembered our boys names. They even started tracking his height as the ultimate bonding moments. The building blocks teachers are always doing fun holiday meals and activities. They also have the best Halloween and Holiday Activities as well as events celebrating our Veterans and First Responders. A true class act with absolutely no negatives. Shouts out and GOLD STAMPS to Miss Orona, Castellano, Cockrum, Hunter, Gloria and Stephanie. As well as Miss Mckerchy who was an absolute angel for one of our boys. They all go above and beyond and should be greatly commended. GPS please recognize these outstanding teachers as they are truly making a positive difference and displaying excellence in education on many different levels. What attracted us two key features: (1) Horizon's student-to-teach ratio, and (2) the fact that students are assessed and taught at their level. An advanced Kindergartener can be in first or second grade math or reading, etc. Similarly, students needing more help are engaged and taught at the right level of challenge. Kindergarten classrooms are 25-30 students with a teacher and adult assistant teacher yielding teacher-to-student ratios of 13-15. In grades 1-6, students are in mixed-aged classrooms (again, taking into account the challenge needed for each student), with a class size of 55-60 led by 3 adults-two teachers and an adult assistant teacher, yielding a ratio of 18-20. These numbers are great. Beyond the classroom, we appreciate the lunch options. Food is catered from places like Pei Wei, Chick-fil-A, Panda Express, Boston Market and Streets of NY Pizza, making it much better than cafeteria-level food. While the price can be more than a cafeteria, the providers donate a share of proceeds back to the school, which is a win-win. We have also found that involvement opportunities are larger and more diverse than other schools - numerous sports, clubs, and activities are available to K-6 students. It's built with multiple building and fencing around the perimeter to keep the kids safe...and this day in age that's a big plus!! Dr Reid is the school principal and my boys love him. He takes the drop off and pick up zone pretty serious- so follow the rules and directions for that area or you'll find him tapping your window glass ha ha! Mr. Trout and Mr. Todd are awesome and my kids really look forward to fist bumping or high "fiveing" them every chance they get. We had a great experience with Mrs Woods, Mrs McDonald and Mrs Cirqua. Mrs Greer is new so I think I would cut her some slack but I feel like she shouldn't be teaching kindergarten-she doesn't have the patience or endurance for that age and needs an older classroom level. School really focuses on grouping based on kids levels which creates an unhealthy competition among class and parents.A lot of teacher tutor right after school dismisses and students taught by the teachers during those sessions, are then able to advance into higher groups so basically you spend more money after paying the monthly tuition.This is a very very common trend. School participates in national history day which is good but problem is the teacher who runs that is very biased.Years ago when her own child was participated in these competitions ( from middle school to high school), he would win awards in almost all categories.People felt nepotism at its very best. You pay for almost all the clubs and extracurriculars.Schools playground is too small.My child dreaded music and foreign language.Kids only do singing on music and no instruments at taught all.kids only learn numbers in Spanish pretty much the entire time.
