We had Pat as our instructor for the Discover Diving event. Pat was super informative during the morning when we were learning how to use the gear. He was funny but also emphasized the importance of safety while diving. During the actual dives in the afternoon, he was a calming presence as we were getting acclimated and remained a calm presence during the entire dive. He knew both diving spots very well and we had a great time with him under water. All the other staff was nice as well. 10/10 would recommend and will definitely come back if we're ever in town again! read more

Such great service! We were here because this is where Deco Divers operates out of. I'm not sure about the technicalities of that - whether Tarpoon Lagoon works in business with Deco Divers or if they ARE Deco Divers, but either way. I had pre-paid for a wetsuit for snorkeling because this was my first time and I had no idea that I didn't actually need one or how hot and uncomfortable one would be. The owner helped me pick out a super cute alternative to swim in, which included sea turtle swimming leggings that I absolutely plan to walk around in all the time and incorporate into regular outfits. She then was very helpful in refunding me for the wetsuit rental. While I'm no diving connoisseur by any means, this shop seemed to have everything you'd need, right down to sunscreen relief lotion. Plus, bonus points for being right across from Monty's Sunset, which has the best drinks ever. read more

I have dove all over the world and extensively in south FL and can say that this was one of the worst dive experience I've ever had and one of the worst, least professional dive operators I've ever encountered: 1) I booked a night dive with a guide. I was told that the guide cost $80 (if I wanted one for myself). Since I wanted a more enjoyable dive and not worry about navigating myself, I agreed to this. I ended up sharing my guide with FOUR other ppl. This is completely unacceptable. I am 100% certain that the other individuals "sharing"my guide did not pay $80 per person either. Even if this was a shared guide, $80 is far too pricey to share a guide with 4 other strangers. It is extremely deceitful for Tarpoon Lagoon to communicate that I would be paying for a private guide and then throw several other people with my guide b/c they did not have anyone to follow. 2) The dive guide was completely ineffective in checking my air consumption during the dive (meaning he did it zero times) and making sure I was comfortable b/c he was focusing on the other people who ended up leeching onto my guide. I was not able to get the full experience of the dive b/c the guide needed to babysit several other individuals. 3) We got blown off the wreck and upon surfacing was very far from the dive boat. I expected better decision making from the dive guide to ensure this would not happen. I've dove in significant current before, and this current was NOT that bad. Furthermore, we did not get picked up by the boat for at least 30 mins (probably closer to 45 mins). This, too, is not acceptable--I was extremely cold and uncomfortable. It is NOT ok to do almost our entire surface interval on the water like that. 4) I paid $25 to rent a flashlight. At the dive shop, I saw someone else get a flashlight for free b/c I overheard the staff member tell the diver "I'm going to give you the light for free." What made my $25 flashlight even better was the fact that it went out/the batteries died when I got down to the dive site. NOT acceptable. Paying for faulty equipment cut my dive short and jeopardize my safety during the dive. 5) The following day when I called Tarpoon Lagoon Dive Center to speak to the manager about my experience, I was told that there was no manager available and the individual was unsure when a manager would come in. He took a message for me and told me someone would be in touch. Nobody ever called me back to rectify the situation. I live in Miami and was looking forward to finding a local dive shop with which I could go out and dive regularly since I am an avid diver. It is very unfortunate and disappointing that this dive shop is literally the worst dive shop I've ever encountered. I will never dive with Tarpoon Lagoon again and will be sure to steer all my friends away from Tarpoon Lagoon. read more

I've been coming to TDC as far back as 2003, well before I made Miami home. If there was a conference in town, I'd always check to see what what happening-dive wise. The staff are super! The location can't be beat, situated minutes from SoBe. You jump on one of their boats morning, afternoon or night and off you go into the wild blue Atlantic Ocean. The dives vary: Florida's reef is close and always is a good go-to dive so you can see those tropical fish first; there are wreck dives of all sorts---see a couple of world war 2 tanks or cool boats, sunk deliberately to create artificial reef systems. Between August and March you can treat yourself to a night dive chasing delectable Floridian Lobster, but you will need a Florida Saltwater fishing license first. No problem! You can get one right next door at Sector 7 fishing and supply store. Super convenient. Don't know how to dive ? No problem. Nicole came here to get her PADI open water and is currently doing her advanced open dive certification so we can check out wrecks in 100ft of water or deeper. If you aren't interested in diving and just want to tag along on the boat, that's cool too. I came along for an additional 20$ and even snorkeled while Nicole was down under doing her training dives. It was fun talking to the captain and crew too and enjoying the beautiful water and breezes. The fun doesn't stop after your dive ends. Also next door is Monty's where you can keep the party going with drinks and a fantastic raw bar. read more

I was sized and outfit for gear in 10 minutes, since it was just me diving Pat was my dive partner Dive brief was quick and too the point, the dive was not hurried, we explored while the reef while Pedro prepared the area for my father. I did a 2 tank dive in Nov 18, very cold, but the staff were very friendly and had snacks on hand to make the cold slighlt less noticeable. I was looking for a good price for My AOW and Tarpoon lagoon offered the course and I had the chnace to dive some of the spots which I got weathered out on the previous trip. My instructor was Alexa. She was very professional and very patient, which was appreciated by all in my class. She is meticuolous and ensures that everyone is up to speed before moving on to the next section/dive. The dive boat has wo freshwateer showers, awesome :), which stayed warm even on the chilly days in Nov. I will be recommending Tarpoon to my freinds looking to upgrade their cert and I might have an interest in a Nitrox course sometime soon. 5 stars. read more

Came to Miami with nothing planned but hoping to get a dive in. Boy did we get lucky when we called Tarpoon! They were happy to get us in that same day to beat some bad weather coming in and we were on a large dive boat with a small number of divers (lucky!). We had to rent all our gear and everything was in good shape and the equipment had built in dive computers, too. The staff at the shop were helpful, the captain and crew were great, and our dive master was awesome. I recently traveled to Miami with a friend and we dove with two companies while there. We found tarpoon lagoon to be the better of the two. They had a very solid method of accounting for each diver. They also were excellent with handling sea sickness, which was suffered by a good number of people aboard. We found them exceptionally professional and we felt safe in their hands. read more

If you're visiting this place within two hours of their closing time I advise you call ahead. I drove for 55 minutes today with my wife to get booties and fins for both of us. We got there at 4:35pm and they had just closed. The sign on the door said they closed at 6:00pm! When I think about the other many things that must be done with this lack of professionalism in this place I feel a little less bad about wasting two hours of my life driving to visit them today. Today I was there just for gear, but I was also planning on getting certifications and going on tours with them. Imagine they decide to skip maintenance on a boat or their rental gear because they want to go home early. You could loose much more than your time. read more

I have to admit, I was sceptical about the camp and whether it would hold their interest every day, all week, but all four kids loved it so much we had to drag them out of there! Alexa was a wonderful instructor. Focused on safety, Patient, fun and just the right amount of goofy for 12 year olds. At the end of the course I heard these comments from the kids which are the best reviews possible: "I may never snorkel again!" "When can we get our advanced certification?" "Can we do this again next summer?" In short, they loved their instructor, loved diving, and loved Tarpoon Lagoon. Special shout out to Val, Jake, Ivan and Lastly Mr. Godzillaman. Scubbbbbba divinggg (Along Came Polly reference). Finally completed a bucket list and childhood dream of mine. I decided to take the plunge, get it get it ;), and get my certification of open water certification. Classes are run from Friday to Sunday. First half of Friday is spent going over the PADI book and testing the second half in the pool right behind. The pool is not the cleanest because it's the Montys Pool, but a great place to learn without the elements of the ocean for the first time. Second day is spent going through more drilll exercises of basically everything that could go wrong down under and how to handle its situation. All you keep thinking is this better never happen when I'm scuba diving, but better be safe and informed them sorry! The second half and Sunday you finally become a real mermaid and do ocean dives to various awesome locations of underground cemeteries , ship wrecks and reefs but still doing the awesome "oh snap this can go wrong drills" just 30-60ft below this time! Fun times all n all. Mike the instructor was super calm informative and friendly! Must have your own snorkel and mask gear and fins. You can rent all the equipment if you want as well. Definitely completed a bucket list in an amazing way! read more

I came to Miami on a work trip and wasn't sure I would have time to dive but brought my card and log to be safe so when I ended up having a free day Friday I decided to go for it - after trying several other locations who were either full or canceled the boat I had booked, I ended up with Tarpoon (and the Deco Dive boat company). I am a newly certified diver and was all by myself so they made me get a guide. The guide, Sam, was awesome- very patient as I tried out my still fledgling skills and gave me super helpful tips. It felt like having a personal scuba trainer during the dives. I wasn't thrilled I had to hire a guide but he was worth it. He went out of his way to make sure I had a good time and was very knowledgeable about the fish in the area in addition to diving techniques. The diving itself was absolutely spectacular - we went to Neptune Memorial and Emerald Reef, the former was such a cool site and we saw a huge moray eel and a bunch of mature barracuda. All that being said, it was by far more expensive than I was hoping to have to pay especially since I had to rent all my gear and hire a guide. They provided very minimal snacks after the dives were over which seems like a really simple area for them to improve on and make the experience more worth it for the price (though I recognize this may be the boat company's issue not Tarpoon). In addition, the shop itself felt a little disorganized, hurried, and a little grumpy. Definitely not a sizable con (obviously given my five star review), but was a weird way to start the whole experience. I was torn between a 4 and a 5 star but ultimately the guide's helpfulness and professionalism put me over the edge! Would definitely recommend. read more

I don't normally do reviews but this was such a bad experience that I felt that I had no other choice. To start, we were sent out on a scuba diving boat as snorkelers. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal as I'm a certified diver and season snorkeler. The company called me about 1/2 hour before we were suppose to arrive (we were already in car at hotel getting ready to head over) and said it's a little choppy and to grab dremamine if you get sea sick. I asked what the visibility is and if the waters are still snorkelable and the lady said she didn't know. I told her that I would call back after I talk with my gal who has never snorkeled before in her life. I called back and a guy answered the phone and I immediate said, "I want to cancel". He put me on a long hold and then got back and said that the visibility if 50 ft and the chop isn't bad, and we can still snorkel. I asked again to cancel and he proceeded to talk us into going saying it's not bad, you'll be okay. When we arrived at the store, we got our gear ready and I took the dremamine per the recommendations earlier. When we got to the first stop, it was suppose to be a 30 ton sunken ship however, it was a reef that was 20-30 ft deep. The chop was not chop, it was waves averaging about 5-6 ft with white caps. We were warned by the guide to try to avoid the Man O Wars that are on the surface of the water where we would be snorkeling. I got in for about 3 minutes and the chop was so heavy that it kept overpowering my snorkel and I couldn't breath. Additionally, the visibility was about 15 ft. I could barely see the bottom. I got out of the water and stayed out for the remainder of the trip. My gal, never even got in. Not that it's important, but I did end up getting sick during that first trip because of the heavy rocking of the boat. Note, this is the first time in my 36 years I have ever got sea sick... EVER!!!!! 3 of the divers came out becasue the conditions were to bad for them and it was their first dives. 6 people threw up when they got out of the water. We went to the next spot which was slightly less aggressive but still 4-5 ft chop. Needless to say, the divers that got out originally along with myself and my gal, did not get in at this location. When we got back to the dock, my gal and I went to the store and talked with the lady that originally called me. She was EXTREMELY RUDE and placed the blame on us. I don't care that I got sick but I care that we tried to cancel, they talked us into going still and we were the only 2 snorkelers on the boat... we should not of been sent out in those conditions. That was irresponsible on their part, false advertising for taking us to a different location then what we signed up for, and then had the tenacity to blame us. I asked if there is anything they can do in terms of a refund and I was shut down. So, to anyone that is considering using this company - BEWARE. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! read more

I set up a dive with them over the phone yesterday for today. Today I show up after driving through heavy traffic from south Miami and am told the dive was cancelled and that I *should* have gotten a phone call. Nope, no call came. You wonder if they are as sloppy with their air mixes as with their book keeping. ***UPDATE*** I want to reply to the response from Valerie K. She is condescending, misleading, and lying, giving potential customers all the more reason to reconsider trusting their lives in these guys hands. "As we all know, scuba diving is an activity that is dependent on weather." This has nothing to do with the reason I gave them a negative review; she's trying to make it seem like I am stupid by suggesting my complaint is about the weather. It isn't. "Because we did not have the necessary information from you the day you called to ask about diving and no reservation was ever secured, we could not call you or inform you that the dive trip was cancelled due to high winds and rough seas. " Misleading and lying. Why didn't they have the necessary information? My fault? Hardly. I explicitly told the person who answered their phone that I was coming and he said he needed to write it down. I gave him my name and number. We spoke three times that day for over four minutes about the ship, where we'd be going, the cost, and the additional expense of bringing someone along. The last thing I said to him was "I'll see you tomorrow at noon." No one ever asked for a credit card. "The fact that your reservation on the dive boat was not properly secured is no reflection on the quality of our shop, our equipment, and most of all, our air." Yes, yes it is. They run a poorly organized, sloppy shop and are then dishonest when they get called out on it. Not the kind of operation to trust your lives to, no, sir. read more

Tarpoon Lagoon is an amazing dive shop, with experienced and professional staff. My boyfriend and I are advanced open water certified and have looked around for local dive shops in Miami and this place just fit our needs. The shop is a spunky, diver-locals joint. It's very easy to lay back and relax with the staff, and enjoy the shop and the dive. The shop is hard to find, but if you park on the south end of the building, walk by the restaurant and look back at the building, you will find the shop with red and white dive flags. They were helpful with our rental gear: BC, regulator, and tanks. They helped us check our gear before going in the water. We chartered 20 minutes out to Neptune Memorial, where the water was a little murky, but the destination was unforgettable. I highly recommend this dive site. There are urns of people's ashes mixed into concrete so their ashes are preserved as reef life. We also saw a barracuda and a turtle. The second dive was close by. It's called RJ's Reef and there alone we saw a lobster, crab, stone fish, puffer fish and parrot fish. The weather was bi-polar, rainy and then sunny, so the waves picked up sometimes, but the current was still and the water was clear. Overall, my experience here was exceptionally good. I enjoyed diving with Tarpoon Lagoon and would come here again. I highly recommend anyone with little to none experience or a lot of experience to come dive with them. Bring snacks if you want. They had oranges at the end which really helped with the salty taste on my lips. read more

My boyfriend picked this company based on their good reviews on yelp and we went scuba diving on a Saturday last week with these guys. My only complaint was them shoving us and about 20 other people on the boat, it was way too crowed for all of us. I did like though the ship wreck dive they took us too and luckily the water that day had great visibility. I always have a really hard time clearing my ears and the guide we hired to dive with us was very patient with me and waited with me all the way down the line til I cleared my ears til we hit the bottom. I'm relatively new to scuba diving and I have to compliment Tarpoon for all of their efforts. I waited over a year to do my PADI eLearning due to procrastination and it expired. Valerie, the owner, was nice enough to let me complete my course and exams there, which saved me the $130 I already paid. Thank you Valerie! I obtained my in-water training and Open Water certification here; the whole experience was really great. Emilio is one heck of a scuba instructor - he's very thorough and patient and made it really fun to learn the ins and outs of diving! All of the staff at Tarpoon Lagoon are very friendly and knowledgeable. Just went out for a dive this past weekend, and they made sure to call ahead and let us know where we'd be going and what the dive conditions were going to be like. They also make sure you have the right fitting gear and weights and help you with any questions or concerns. I decided to get certified as a last minute activity while solotravelinh and I couldn't be happier. We did our initial in the pool next door, and our first open water dives in a lagoon in the keys. The gear was nice and even though several of our dives were cancelled, they made sure i had all of my paperwork completed. The location is very accessible from south beach, and my only complaint was the long drives and dive cancellations. I highly recommend Harpoon Lagoon for anybody on vacation looking for tank fills or to get PADI certified. read more

While on a business trip, I got the urge for a quick dive trip on a weekday morning. Fortunately, the urge hit me the day before I left and I remembered to bring my cert. After a few minutes on the web, I stumbled across this gem of a dive shop. The Online schedule and website made it super easy to schedule a time that worked for me and my abilities. The prices were very decent and within minutes I was scheduled for the next morning's dive. They added me into a guided group, totaling 8 divers with 2 guides on-board. The dive sites were good and the guides were very professional with a mind on safety. Huge added bonus with all the rental gear: easy to check out and a very short haul to the boat. The gear was in great condition, and they helped me pick out and try on everything I needed on the morning of. TL;DR- Looking for a single-day dive trip with no gear of your own? This place really did the trick. No headaches and very little work required for me to set it up and have a great dive! I'd absolutely stop here again if in Miami Beach. read more

I did three days of diving here while in town for work. Tarpoon places you on same boat along with the other south beach operations. It's a good boat, with qualified staff who are very focused on safety and organization. Even on a Sunday it was busy but did not feel overly crowded. Tarpoon has the advantage because they are right there, 30 feet from the boat. If you need gear, you don't need to worry about lugging it from the shop. I bought a few things from the shop as well, and they made some good deals. The staff know their stuff and are helpful. The rental gear was in really great shape. read more

I had a great dive trip on Saturday morning 4/12/14, to the wrecks Patricia, Carolina, 2 army tanks and another wreck near the army tanks. Emilio, our guide for the dives, was very nice and helpful. On the first dive entry while at the surface, I had a bit of panic attack as my new dive suit (first time use) felt too tight, and I didn't think I could breath too good. Emilio was able to get me to calm down and descend to the wreck, instead of going back to the boat. After that I did pretty good (despite getting sea sick) and enjoy the rest of the day. The second dive was even better! Although my wife didn't make the second dive due to not liking the fairly rough waves that day, she did alright also. This was our second dive trip with Tarpoon. Both times they've been helpful and responsive in the preparation with the rental gear (weight belts, BCD) and organizing the group on the boat. Because another dive shop besides Tarpoon was on the boat it can be hectic with the many people and their equipment, but that seems to be the norm in South Florida diving (at least in the trips I've been on.) Anyway, the Tarpoon personnel are ready to answer any questions about the trip. We had no trouble with either of the two air tanks they supplied us with on the boat. As it turned out though, we did have trouble with the weight belts in that the weights weren't properly strapped on the belt, and didn't notice until right before the first dive. (I know now to double check equipment as soon as I can.) The web site is very useful, especially the dive calendar. I reserved on Thursday afternoon for the Saturday morning dive, and I called on Friday evening for a weather check. I have Open Water Diver certification, and these were my 7th and 8th dives. We look forward to our next dive trip with Tarpoon. read more

This past weekend I did my Open water diver certification with Alexa. Purchased it directly through the shop (cheaper than Groupon). As long as you bring your fins, mask, snorkel, and wet suit they will provide everything else. Alexa was extremely professional and knowledgeable. Made all the students feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the process. Would highly recommend doing open water certification with Tarpoon Lagoon and if possible with Alexa.
