9/6/26- Located at one of the exits at the Downtown Berkeley BART station. I usually stop here on the way home from a day in Berkeley. One of the smallest Target stores that ive ever seen and been in. Limited on clothing items, and smaller sections for their groceries and other usual items at a Target. All employees are friendly and helpful. Today stopped to buy eggs. Bought 4 18 count cartons. I thought my Target reusable bags were in my backpack but they weren't. There were no insulated Target reusable bags so had to ask for bags. They don't have paper bags, instead it's the felt like reusable bags, that can tear if packed heavy. Michael's uses this same type of reusable bag, and the seam tore when packed heavy. But I made it home on BART without the bags tearing or breaking any eggs. The cashier did a good job packing thrm in 2 separate bags, that he was kind enough to see that 1 bag would be too heavy. He didn't charge me for a second bag. I usually use my backpack to carry purchased items but it was full already. read more

Last night the store employees went outside to watch the bicycle parade on shattuck and left one employee on the register with a whole line of customers. When employees finally returned they were on their phones instead of working. One had a sports game on her phone with the sound turned up in front of her while she half ass rang up customers. The lack of inventory in stores nowadays is infuriating. Target will order one Tower fan for the entire store instead of ordering 20 and having them in the back for when customers need one. The Berkeley Locations are a joke! Never have products. Always picked through with very little inventory. Notice this in Berkeley in general.... Stores are always out of shit. By the end of my little over four years attending and working at the University of California, Berkeley (2015 to 2019), the Target on Shattuck Avenue was my number one location to go west of campus when I wanted a snack (food or beverage), supplies, or to see if they had some of the protein bars I liked that were out of stock/no longer carried elsewhere. The store was well laid out and easy to navigate and find what I was looking for. For snacks and beverages, there was a fair-sized refrigerated section - so I could get something like a Health-Ade Kombucha if I wanted a chilled drink. My offices were by the North Gate and Sproul Plaza, so if I ran out of something and could not find it in a shop near either of those locations I would come here. Because of its proximity to campus, it was also a place I would come to look for items I needed for life outside of school/work when on my break. When looking for a lock for a locker (for swimming), I also came here. Prices were competitive and sometimes even cheaper for the same product than at the Target in Emeryville or Albany. read more

This Target is very particular because it's very small and it caters to the student body of the area. It's more of a grab and go type of Target for your home essentials, plenty of food for quick bites, but not fruits or vegetables. It does a very good job for the pantry items. Service is very limited but are always there to help since they guard the front of the shop. The only downside to this location is that almost every time I visit the shelves seems to be empty as many students shop and take for their dwelling; also it won't have many of the things that bigger shops have. This Target has gone REALLY downhill. Don't go here often but the past couple times I went here were horrible experiences. Not only are their items usually out of stock but the customer service has really become trash here. I have seen store clerks here getting in yelling matches with random customers over dumb things. Seen clerks even keep following customers just to talk more trash lol. Unreal. Target really scraping the bottom of the barrel in their hiring for this location when workers are just as unhinged as the unstable, crazy folks right in front of the store. I wound up noping out of here and not buying anything. I can restock on stuff at CVS in just a 5 minutes drive down the street. Definitely won't be back to this Target. This store kinda exemplifies the current state of Downtown Berkeley in general, lures you in thinking it's gonna be convenient, but it doesn't actually have the things you want and ends up being and a horrible experience. read more

I have been shopping various Target stores throughout California for over 40 years and love Target but the Target Berkeley Central store located at 2187 Shattuck Avenue, Berkeley, California has problems. I have been shopping at this specific location since Target opened it 11 years ago since it is close to my residence but my biggest issue is customer service at the front. I have seen employees come and go throughout the years and majority have been okay but sensitive training really needs to be done here. Just because some customers are dishonest does not mean the majority are too. We all should be treated with kindness and respect. Some cashiers act like they do not want to be there; some ignore you, some are just plain rude. I have always tried to be respectful, patient, and kind because all i want to do is come in, buy my things, and then leave and go on with my life but it does get frustrating at this location. read more

This is more like a mini-Target as it's about the size of a 7-11. Maybe slightly bigger. It only has selective items. I think the target market is CAL students since it's very close to campus. You could grab some snacks, stationery, and a floor lamp in one stop. The downside is the lack of parking. All in all, it's good if you need to grab some essentials and you live within walking distance. Otherwise, it's not the usual Target store you used to browse around with many selections. read more

I live downtown and this is my favorite nearby destination for small grocery jaunts. Compared to the neighborhood competitors (Walgreens and CVS), the customer service is top notch, the atmosphere is modern and lively, and they have WiFi! I've picked up numerous online orders and made returns here and it's always been efficient. Plus, I've had issues with the self checkout sometimes and they're able to help me out in a jiff. Not everyone knows this, but Target offers price match! Before I buy anything I always check online to see if they have my item cheaper. When I do, I simply show the cashier the cheaper priced item and they're able to match the price. It's saved me so much money! This Express location offers quite a few home items and a whole section of apparel and accessories. read more

A mix of complete junk and personal hygiene products. That's literally all this location sells. No good sections of binders, pens, Christmas items, toys, electronics. I really don't understand what Target management was thinking with these small locations.. Christmas season they had one shelve of items. Halloween was no different, no costumes, masks. I go to TargetExpress every time I have to run errands in Downtown Berkeley. The selection of goods and their prices are the best value. Not the cheapest, but that is because they often have good quality products. At one time they stocked my keratin therapy hair conditioner for half the price you'd find it on Amazon. I usually buy essentials like toothpaste and snacks. In the past I've also purchased everything from bike lights to cookies. I don't recommend buying the clothes, which look very cheap. The Cal-themed clothing looks of higher quality because they are licensed products. I also come here to buy snacks before I watch a movie at Shattuck Cinemas. Waay cheaper than the actual theater by a few bucks. I also use the pharmacy, which is really fast! They send me text notifications when my prescription is filled. The pharmacists and technicians are also very nice! TargetExpress also has a small clearance section in the back, which has a decent selection of stuff. About two weeks ago, I bought a really nice iphone 7 case for $11 (originally $30). A bargain if you ask me! read more

When Walgreens moved across the street at the old Ross/JC Penney location, I wondered what business location would be established here. Voilá! Target Express! I saw a ceramic "Bullseye" statue on a platform that folks could take selfies with in front of the store when there were promotions to celebrate this Target Express's opening in beautiful Downtown Berkeley (around the first week of March). This Target Express is smaller than the chain of Target stores I am used to. It is more of a convenience store, and it appears to cater to the tech and social media clientele of UC Berkeley and the People's Republic of Berkeley. They carry a lot more of the well-known brand name items here as well as those that are exclusive to Target. They sell a selection of Apple products here in this Target Express such as iPods, iPads, and iPhones. One would not see iPads and iPods in either Walgreens and CVS. I stopped in to Target Express to purchase back-up screen protectors and another lightening charger for my iPhone--this time in pink! I forgot to bring my charger and my back-up charger--so I had to rush in and get another one as it was going to be a LONG day at Cal--and I knew I had plug-in options as to where to plug in. Like its competitors near by, Target Express has Berkeley and Cal merchandise to purchase. Just like their surrounding neighbors, especially NorCal Action Sports a couple of doors down. This establishment is very organized and clean. Considering it just opened, it is easy to move about and explore amongst the classic red stacks of goods and merchandise. The customer service is spot on professional. No surly attitudes when seeking assistance and asking questions. Very prompt and courteous in customer service. This is not your big ass Target, like the one in Albany for example. It's downsized for basic grocery, sundries, prescriptions, and snacks. I think this is where the Walgreens (which is now across the street) used to be. I'm often in the neighborhood and stop in for this and that. And never to just ask to use the bathroom. They have had what I have looked for and service has been good enough. At the same time, I've found the entire Target experience here to be unremarkable. read more

This Target Express is extremely light in inventory. I agree with other reviewers that it really felt more like a glorified pharmacy store. The apparel section was limited to a few Tshirts and some workout gear. There's plenty of makeup though. I guess this is good if you want some quick bites to eat or a drink, but other than that it's not a place I'd go out of my way for, of course! At least the aesthetic is nice. read more

I don't really get this Target Express thing. For many a time, students at UC Berkeley was extremely hyped for an alleged Target opening near campus. I mean, when the nearest Target is in Oakland/Emeryville and is essentially an hour bus ride away, what not to like? What we got was not Target, it was Target Express. So what's a Target Express anyway? Imagine an average drugstore like Walgreens and CVS plastered with the iconic red target and red decor all over. That's Target Express. You have aisles upon aisles of the usual drugstore affair you may or may not need, but it's all stuff you could've gotten elsewhere anyway. Fresh produce? Nowhere to be found, really. Cheap clothes? Well, I guess you can get underwear and socks. Electronics, games, and other things that make Target an interesting experience? Nowhere to be found. I thought I had found a haven where I could actually buy games and not have them completely gutted like at GameStop, but I guess not. Also, there's no bathroom. Like the only reason I ever go to Target is the fact that they do have bathrooms, and now there's another location that does not have public restrooms in Berkeley, for better or worse. Since the mandatory shutdown went into effect, all gyms have been closed. With everyone forced to stay home, there has been a shortage of fitness equipment and there were no hand weights or dumbbells available anywhere at the regular price of $10-$12 apiece - including at Ross' or Marshall's discount bins...UGH! I saw many dumbbells online everywhere from eBay and Amazon but with prices jacked up into $40-$60 each - NO WAY, i'm cheapy. I called around and purchased some online at the Emeryville/Oakland store, but when I was about to go pickup, the store informed me that someone walked in and took away my order!! Upset as anything, I called the Berkeley Central Store and a fantastc gentleman - Julio answered the phone, put me on hold and checked the racks for me. He returned to inform me that unfortunately they were sold out as those were high-ticket items but he then offered to keep a lookout for me when any deliveries came in. For the next month [!!] Julio kept watch for 2 sets of dumbbells for me with each delivery that would come in, coming in early to make sure he snatched a single dumbbell at a time and squirreled it away somewhere for me. It took him 3 weeks of hustle to get up to where he had my 2 sets for me, informed me and kept them safe for my friend to come by and pick up! I'm so grateful for Julio's complete and UTTER professionalism. He felt my agony and understood the urgency of keeping my body healthy and fitness regimen consistent. He kept me informed in a timely manner and was generous with his suggestions and alternate recommendations. I felt like he was my partner in hustle and I am so grateful that he popped up just when I needed. Thankyou Julio!! He made my Covid19 Summer!! Great alternative to a CVS or Walgreens. The store is super well designed and has a great selection of all the essentials a college student would need. You can tell by the neatly stacked shelves that the staff puts a lot of care into properly organizing the store. More expensive than your typical target but at least on par to (if not better than) the CVS and Walgreens in the area. read more

This location right in downtown Berkeley is not only centrally located (it's right atop a BART station access point), it also stocks the essentials needed for not only students at the nearby university, but those that live in the downtown area. I love the fact they carry fresh fruit and vegetable selections, dairy products and frozen items even. I love that aspect because I don't always want to dine our and sometimes a quick stop here gives me my lunch for the day at work down the street. They also have an extensive selection of self care products and health items and they always are rotating their seasonal selections to match the Berkeley community (i.e. back to school, summer break, winter break, Christmas and such). I would say not to pass up the store if needing things a traditional Target can offer, plus if they don't carry it they can order it and have it delivered to the store typically free of charge! read more

When I lived in Berkeley roughly a decade ago, this used to be a Walgreens (or CVS) and I came here pretty frequently. Funny to see it as a Target Express - basically a slimmed down Target with slightly better selection and prices than a CVS or Walgreens. Very clean, orderly store, though I found the security guard at the entrance a bit creepy - he was continually staring at people in the store, as if he was waiting for people to shoplift so he could bust them! read more

Quite overpriced and they never have what you need This target is one that's put in specifically to rip off Cal students. It's the closest place to get sundries and other things of the sort near campus, and right by a bus stop, so it's definitely convenient, but that doesn't make the fact that they overcharge ok! I'd much prefer to go to a "real" target like the albany or alameda ones. But sometimes, this is the best option. I don't really like having to pay a little extra, but sometimes it's what I have to do :/ It's just not that fun to go and wander through this target because it's so small and they don't have fun sections like the dollar spot or electronics sections that are super big. If you're a Cal student and need some sundries or something of the sort, this is your place, but just be prepared to to spend a bit extra read more

They have lots of Cal gear and random things, but when it comes to practical items like body wash or Epsom salt, they're choices are quite limited. Having a Target Express downtown (near BART and UCB) is awesome and convenient. This store has a pharmacy, tech section, and various other typical items you can find in a Target. Yes, because it's a Target Express, the store is smaller. However, that means you'd probably spend less.
