This place is the perfect in-and-out taco joint. I come here often because the food is so good. Comes out hot, quick and so full of flavor. The enchiladas are filled with the meat of your choice, they don't skimp either. The only thing I would complain about is the fact that they don't check up on you and you constantly have to ask for water or anything else you may need. Also the Al Pastor meat is flame I always order mines well done no pine apples super fire! The waitress has been here for years she's down to earth. We are new to the neighborhood and are trying this place for the first time, now being from Southern LA, our Taqueria experiences are pretty high. The place is centrally located on Bryn Mawr and Broadway, on the corner. The welcome was warm and inviting - thank you Maritza. The place is immaculately clean and the food is delicious. I had the liver and onions, one of my personal favorites, and it was delicious, spicy, but-not-too spicy. The portion sizes are excellent. Not great but not terrible. The bf and I had their barbacoa, pork, birria (wasnt on menu) and steak tacos. If it wasn't for the salt shaker and salsa on the table, these wouldn't have tasted good. It's fine. This place is on the corner of Broadway and Bryn Mawr, and I've been past it a zillion times but never stopped in. It has a very distinctive wraparound sign out front, so its been calling to me for years. A couple of days ago, on a stroll through my new hood, I decided to finally give it a try. What's not to like about this place? You get exactly what this place looks like. All the food is relatively cheap and pretty decent. Definitely a place that serves more than what is in the menu. Been going to this spot for the past 20 years. A little piece of the early 2000's. You walk in and see the decor and it just brings you back to simpler times. Pop cans in the freezer and red baskets for the chips and dip scream nostalgia. The menu is simple and clear cut. Nothing fancy or extra, tacos and some classic dishes like the huevos con chorizo. I highly recommend the tacos Al pastor. Some of the best I've had in the city and almost bring back a taste from home. The service itself was as you expect, Friendly and direct. Can't beat that kind of service. Overall this place feels like a Time Machine. A place for a quick escape from the everyday 9-5 to enjoy some good food and great conversation with friends. read more

I am a fan, fan, fan of Taquerias in general. Something that makes me mad is the people come in with these expectations for "Tex Mex" and get turned off by the joint they are in. 1. It is not fancy. Go elsewhere please. 2. It is not expensive. Go spend your dumb money elsewhere if that makes you feel good. 3. It is down-home Mexican food as if you were staying in some small Mexican town that ISN'T a tourist attraction. One of the things they have that nobody else has is a beef soup that is straight-up delicious. Definitely get this when it is one of those ridiculously cold winter days that you just cannot get the sense of any warmth. This soup is devine, well flavored and even has a hint of spice. If you are haughty and full of yourself, do not even try any of the other platters or foods. The tacos are a usual "go to" for me. That and the quesadillas. Prices are good. Atmosphere is modest. Absolutely fantastic horchata, best I've had in the area (definitely got come cinnamon in there mmmm) My girlfriends and I swing by all the time while I'm on the walk with my little pupperoni. They stop in for tacos and get me a horchata, and its all done by the time I walk around the block! So the food is quick. It was so cold today during my errands... so, I dropped in here to warm up with a late lunch. Sure, the place is simply and plain but that has never bothered me... in fact, there is a charm to it. I ordered 2 tacos, al pastor and pollo. Both were tasty and satisfying. I also enjoyed the chips and warm bean dip which came out gratis. The 2 employees who interacted with me were also extremely kind. No chips and beans while dining in -- waitress said it chips and beans are longer automatic for all dining in tables and they are only for when a table orders more than one gordita (e.g. Taco dinner, 2 gorditas, etc.). I find that weird especially if you are fine eating one gordita at lunch, but all good. (Beans are from a can anyway.) Nestled in the busy intersection of N Broadway and W Bryn Mawr right off of the Bryn Mawr L Station is a little place called Taqueria Uptown that may look a bit worn but thar should never be a deterrent to get good Mexican food at an affordable price. Taqueria Uptown is a small surprise that offers a wide variety of dishes both small and large. I wasn't going for a major meal since I was on my way downtown to have a workout so I ordered the nachos with ground beef and cheese and the usual ingredients that make a nacho tasty: guacamole, sour cream; you name it, it had it and my palate was loving it. I may have enjoyed it a bit better if it had had AC--the day was muggy and Chicago had just come out of a wallop of rain--but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed the brief time I spent there before making my way back down to the Loop. Am I glad I did. The Al Pastor was not over cooked. Also, I love when you can substitute cilantro and onion for lettuce and tomato. A splash of fresh lime juice, som salsa verde and you've got yourself a meal for under $4.00. Yes the decor is lackluster and based on other reviews I didn't need to check out the bathroom. But the homecooked food, warm chips, and fresh salsa made up for it. The beans are very good here as well. Didn't try the rice, going to have to go back. read more

Spartan. Simple. Plain. First entree: Huevos Rancheros. It was swimming in red sauce and was so disgusting I sent it back and ordered...... Second Entree: Chorizo and eggs. In all candor, I knew what I'd be getting because I had already tasted this dish when gracious, generous dining partner offered me a taste of hers. And when I tasted it, I went into my childhood. What was that taste? It was a Spanish version of ..... SALAMI AND EGGS AT MR. RICKY'S on Skokie Blvd, in....Skokie, where I'd eaten breakfast with my grandfather every Sunday morning from age 5 -15. Chorizo and eggs, my tush! Call it what they want; the only difference was the meat was chopped differently and it was served with a flour tortilla instead of an egg bagel. Oh, and Richard Melman's Dad doesn't own this joint. I'd prefer the real Mr. Ricky's to this place, but in a pinch the childhood memories were almost as pleasing as the real thing. read more
