Hate to give a 1 star especially for a place out of state. But forreals the worst tacos ever eaten. Super greasy, bland, no flavor, no taste at all for the Al pastor, steak and barbocoa tacos. No wonder they gave salt packets with the food. I've never gotten salt packets at any taqueria or Mexican restaurant until here. Many of the taco spots downtown closed early so tried this place. I love tacos and I'm on a mission to try all the authentic tacos of Milwaukee. I chose Taqueria Los Comales because it seemed like there was a broad meat selection. You can find plenty of parking on site which is great because this street is pretty busy. The restaurant resembles a home-y Mexican diner. Each table has pickled vegetables (jalapenos, carrots, cauliflower) and 2 bottles of hot sauce. The green sauce was your common salsa verde which was lighter and more sour. The red sauce was a darker, spicier, and smokier flavor. I got every flavor (9) taco on the menu: bistec, pastor, suadero, lengua, pollo, chorizo, barbacoa, cecina, and tripas. My favorite was the pastor (pork) and tripas (tripe). There were 4 different type of steak tacos on the menu and they all tasted similar which was disappointing. The lengua (tongue) was one large piece on a taco and can be very intimidating. I prefer it to be cut up but it was very tender and easy to bite through. The pollo (chicken) was my least favorite as it was pretty bland. Overall, I think the tacos could use more flavor especially the steaks. The horchata here isn't overly sweet which is always a plus for me. I don't think I'll drive out of my way for Taqueria Los Comales but I would stop by if I was in the neighborhood. read more

I absolutely love coming to this place. Tacos al pastor are really good, make sure you get the onion and cilantro if they ask if you want any. Tortas are just a comfort food that you must try, very soft and delicious, make sure you ask them for the salsa on the side because they could be smothered in the salsa and you might not like it like that, I rather pour it myself so they don't get soggy. Every time we are there we order the Chicken Burrito Dinner, my SO is obsessed with it so we always end up eating one or even taking it to go for next day. They reheat well as well. Carne en si jugo is sooo good on a cold day but heck, I've tried it on a hit day too when I feel sick and believe me the spice will make your sinuses clear up. Make sure you ask for the chiles separate if you are scared of the heat and please make sure to bite a small piece at the time. The peppers are small but they are in salt hot for people not used to the spice. I am writing the review of the Charola Comales, I ordered the 20 tacos and they were so good, I even took some to work the next day, reheated in microwave at work and people were dying to try and once they tried it, they were like, where did you get them?! Did you make them? So now I'm supposed to bring some more soon. Aguas are delicious too so make sure you order an Agua fresca. I know everyone has tried Horchata and Jamaica because it's the one people are more familiar with but please do yourself a favor and try Tamarindo water, they have it here and that's my favorite. It's sour, sweet and tart, yet it will be the best combination and it will make you wonder how haven't you heard of Tamarind before. The ambiance, if you like Telenovelas, they have them on every time I go there, it is a bit loud some times because it's full of people, they do have a couple of windows and for parking make sure you park in reverse to the parking spot so it's easier to get out. Also if you like you can always order take out call them to order, I often do that since I'm 30 min away. Please go and don't forget to tip well, if you like the food and service so business continue to stay open! :) I hope you guys enjoy this place as much as I do! read more

I've been going to this place since I was a kid but I think over the years it has gone down hill. It doesn't deliver the quality in meat for the dishes and cleanliness could be better. Definitely the spot if you're craving Mexican food in Milwaukee!!! The staff was super friendly, the food was affordable, well portioned and came out quickly. There is lots of seating, and you pay by going up to the counter after your meal, so you don't feel rushed. I ordered a Torta, which was really tasty, and definitely hit the spot. The PIC and I were craving real Mexican food after spending a week in Cancun. Looking through all of the options and reviews, it was obvious we had to give Taqueria Los Comales a visit. This isn't like the other Mexican restaurants in Milwaukee-- it is more like a diner and I'm not even sure if they serve margaritas or cervezas! (Note: It's also not the greatest place to visit in MKE, but don't let that stop you from going!). Greeting you on the table is an assortment of pickled carrots and jalapenos and other veggies. As others have said, I'm not sure how sanitary it all is so we didn't partake. The PIC happens to be fluent in Spanish and she was needed on this night. Our waitress didn't speak or understand English but I would imagine we could have just gotten away with pointing to items on the menu. (Bonus points for authenticity). Overall, we had excellent service for a hole-in-the-wall place. Now for the food, we had some of the best Mexican food in Milwaukee--fantastic tacos with excellent seasonings (beef, steak, and chicken) and fresh-made guacamole--which is hard to find in the MKE (we're guac snobs). Mexican for lunch was in my mind so I thought I would try a new place in the area of town with a lot of authentic Mexican places. Parking is tough so it's nice that they have a lot next to the restaurant. On Sunday for lunch the place was very busy and I was seated right away. The inside had a Mexican theme with cheap tables and booths. Mexican music was blared while you dine. I liked the serve your self jalapeños in the vegetable container on the table. The menu is small and my taco dinner was not even listed. This was the first Mexican place that does not bring you chips and salsa which I thought was weird. There is no utensils on the table at all. I ordered the three taco dinner that comes with a drink. Horchata was my drink of choice and you know how horchata is rich/creamy with that hint of cinnamon. This was very watery and weak and the worst I have ever had. The three taco dinner looked great and there was my eating utensil a plastic spoon, see my pictures. Marinated steak, pastor and chorizo were my three meats. The tacos were cilantro and onion only as I requested. The marinated steak taco was bland so I put hot sauce and jalapeños in it. The pastor was pretty much another bland taco. The chorizo was finally a tasty taco and my fav. The beans and rice were bland also. None of the food was seasoned and nothing wowed me at all. I had to use my fingers to remove the stems from the jalapeños because the really flimsy plastic spoon was useless. The whole meal with drink was $7.41. No liquor at all and no bar so drinks are out. Over all compared to other authentic Mexican places this was my least favorite one. I would rather pay more for better tasting authentic food which Milwaukee has. I would not go back here when there are better authentic options. read more

The burrito was big and had all the fixings (avocados were extra), but the chicken meat they used was GROUND chicken. Really? ground chicken? You couldn't give me white or dark chunks of meat? Wow! This place was awesome. I'm so excited to have found it. Super authentic (a rarity in WI), delicious tacos and very affordable. The rice and beans were on point too, and that's always a win in my book. Service was good, but a little slow, which I actually enjoy at a spot like this. It's so laid back that it doesn't really matter, and I know that if I needed something I could get staff attention quickly. The one weird thing to me was that each table has carrots and cauliflower on them as a side option. I'm just glad this part is optional. Great street tacos and they're open late! This is by and far the best Mexican food I've ever had outside of Mexico. For those of you who like to cry about cuisine in Milwaukee/Wisconsin/everywhere else not being authentic (and you do need to get over it, really) , this is as close as it gets. I would give this place 6 stars if I could. Don't expect fine dining. Most of the food comes in plastic baskets. The salsa is in bottles (like ketchup and mustard bottles). There is a tub of pickled carrots and jalapenos and other vegetables on the table as well. Yes, everybody digs in those tubs. I, along with thousands of other people, have eaten what comes out of those tubs. It doesn't matter where I am in the world, I crave tacos from here. There is nothing more in the world that I hate, as far as food goes, than cilantro. It has never been a problem to get my tacos without it. My mouth is watering just thinking about this place. Don't expect a flour tortilla or lettuce, tomato, and cheese on your tacos. That's not how they are in Mexico, and that's not how they are here. There are so many different choices of meats for the tacos, especially compared to other Mexican restaurants. I think that tacos are the best thing, hands down. But, I am also a huge fan of the tortas. I have yet to find a better torta. I love this place. I would go there everyday if it was closer to where I live. Screw Cantina... If you want real authentic Mexican food then try this place. I had the pleasure of eating here one night and was amazed by what I found. The tacos are cheap, the decorum was festive and the customer service is top notched. But lets be real. The main attraction is the food. I loved the tacos. Loved them. This was probably my favorite mexican restaurant in the whole city until I stopped in recently. The service is always very quick and there is almost no wait for the food. Sundays mornings there is a talented gentleman who sings with his guitar. Very lovely. The food though is really a hit or miss. My last visit I was served tacos that contained meat that tasted like they had it sitting all day. It was like eating a cardboard box, I could not even finish them. If you want some quality authentic Mexican food Los Comales is the place to hit up on the South Side of Milwaukee. Definitely try the pork tacos al pastor! Al pastor is the style in which they are served, it means with onion and cilantro, squeeze a little lime on top and you are good to go. This is the BEST way to eat authentic Mexican tacos. There are tons of little restaurants like this around this area. I've tried quite a few of them and I continue to come back to Los Comales. The food is very reasonably priced. I don't think they serve any beer or margaritas and there are no chips and salsa to come with your order (bummer) but they do include yummy pickled veggies on every table that are quite zingy and tasty. They have vegetarian options (burritos, tacos) where they usually just substitute avocado for the meat. The Horchata (or rice water) is quite yummy here (correct pronunciation leaves out the "H" FYI). This place is very casual. Great for families/kids. The service is always VERY friendly. We ordered a taco platter for a party one time and it was a great (and cheap) way to feed a crowd. Everyone was very impressed with the food. read more

Your tacos will have cilantro, lime, and white onions on them (aka real tacos). They have a couple options for salsa and sauces for your tacos which are very tasty! The tacos are authentic and very similar to what you would find in Mexico. No cheese, beans or, lettuce found on these tacos just meat, onion and cilantro. We stopped by to grab a bite to eat after leaving the bar. Surprisingly, we were seated right away and received prompt service. This place had a lot of people so we were very pleased that we did not have to wait long. The tables and place settings made you feel like you were in Mexico. As for the food, this is the reason that I am giving 2 stars. My friends and I ordered a variety of food items and all came to the same conclusion. The food was not what we expected from a Mexican restaurant. I ordered Tacos de Bistek and Tacos de Lengua (steak and tongue). The meat (lengua) in my taco came in 2 oval pieces as if they did not even have the decency to shred the meat or slice it up into thin slices. The steak in my tacos tasted like it was overcooked or burnt or something and they were stingy on the portion sizes. The only thing that tasted pretty good was the tortilla. It was fluffy and tasted fresh. My friends ordered tacos with marinated steak and tacos with chicken. The marinated steak was bland and the chicken was processed chicken meat that looked like a chicken tender. And guess what? That was bland as well. We ordered Horchata and it was super sweet and tasted like it was pre-made and came out of a can. It was not "real" Horchata. I really wished that we would have just gone to Jaliscos instead and dealt with slow service, drunk people, and loud atmosphere because at least the food would have been more authentic and tasted better. I probably will not visit this restaurant again since all of the tacos that we tried weren't delicious and the Horchata was not authentic. Eating here should be mandatory. Though the menu is simple, the taco ($5.25) and burrito ($5.75) dinners are exceptional. The taco is made in a fresh soft corn shell and comes with rice and beans; the burrito is excessively tasty. Horchatas (rice milk) are not too sweet and served with shaved ice. The mood is set by a jukebox machine which plays a fair number of spanglicized pop covers such as Total Eclipse of the Heart and the first version of Killing Me Softly ever to employ an oomphing tuba on bass. This is a great place for real "normal" (not gourmet or complex food like that of Rey Sol or Taqueria Azteca) Mexican food. Many Mexicans in the area consider it the best place for tacos. You can order a plate of tacos (try one chicken, one al pastor and one steak) and to have it most authentically, get the chopped onions and cilantro. Tacos with meat, onions, cilantro, a little sauce on soft corn tortillas are real Mexican tacos.
