Note: This review had to be moved from its original listing in the U.S. near Newark. It was no longer taking photos I wanted to upload, yet the Lisbon listing was. Yelp needs to change the name of this listing! Its correct name is TAP Air Portugal and, in Portuguese, TAP means "Transportes Aereos Portugueses." I had written a review with an update. The first review was based on 2 flights within Europe. When I added an update, Yelp removed it, citing that the update did not add much. When this happens, it could be a "hall monitor" problem where a creep in the obscurity of the internet decides to make a project out of you or perhaps colorful language in the review was not welcomed, with words like 'melodramatic Portuguese countenances that almost sing the fado' regarding the cabin crew, which is something I find more interesting than looking at vapid Americans. What's wrong with such language? The fado is Portugal's brand of the blues and have you ever noticed how soulful and intense the physiognomies of some fado singers are? I find that bohemian (af) millennial travel writers write passages like this and, in addition to passing muster, it makes reading their accounts more detailed, visual, and enjoyable. That update was actually based on 4 TAP transatlantic flights from the U.S. to Europe. - - - - - For the TAP flights from Lisbon to Portugal's island of Madeira and Venice (VCE), they were at about 3 stars. I liked their fares, their schedule, and the economy tickets made for a paltry number of miles to add to my United account. The flight to Madeira was better and the approach to the island, and its airport up on pylons, was spectacular. The flight to Venice was strange. Some activity on the field at VCE kept us from landing and we were sent to land at Bologna (BLQ), making the continuation a 15-minute flight. They handed out small bone-in chicken breasts, which seemed strange. In that same span of years, Iberia of Spain gave you nothing! Shorter flights now always feature snacks. Within Europe, TAP is comparable to Iberia, but slightly better. In the update, now rolled into this one review, I had gone on to "cross the pond" with them from Newark, JFK, BOS, and MIA. They now have more U.S. gateways and more connection options from Lisbon onward. Those flights ranged from 4 to 5 stars. The best things about their transatlantic flights were their pricing, their punctuality, and their newer Airbus 330-900neo planes. The negatives were few. Compared to Iberia and yesteryear's Alitalia, their cabin crews were a little more standoffish. I also do not care for the single aisle Airbus 321-XLR with wafer-thin Recaro seats, but more carriers are using it on shorter transatlantic routes. I prefer yesteryear's bulkier upholstered seats. It's all about penciling things out. With thinner seats, they can put more of them on a plane. Since taking those transatlantic flights, TAP has really spread its wings in North America. Beyond Newark, JFK, BOS, and MIA, they have added two Star Alliance hubs - Washington DC and Chicago. They have sensibly added service to Canada, to both Toronto and Montreal. More recently, they have expanded to the West Coast, first coming into SFO, also a Star Alliance hub, and closer to the Portuguese community in the Bay Area and in the Central Valley. They don't make the trip daily. When in NorCal, I saw their Airbus 330-900 land at SFO from the shoreline. In its distinctive livery, it made for a beautiful sight and Lisbon was now connected to America's West Coast! Lastly, I was having lunch with a friend near LAX and was taken aback seeing a TAP A330 on finals. While not daily, TAP had recently added Los Angeles! So far, this looks like a 4-star situation. I almost wanted to drop TAP to 3 stars for a poor flight from the UK to Portugal. A younger flight attendant evidently had some coworkers or friends on board and talked to them for most of the flight, almost wincing if passengers asked (for) something (of her). This was the poorest service I've seen on a European flight. I had not yet flown on TAP from Europe to the U.S. Not having purchased a ticket to come home, the trek I had my eye on - Iberia from the Algarve to Madrid and then to the U.S. - went way up in price. TAP delivered and I was able to get to the U.S. in summer if I first took the 6 a.m. flight from Faro to Lisbon. For about $425, that flight to MIA, with a checked bag and "my" window seat, was incredibly smooth and arrived ahead of schedule. I'm giving TAP an entry-level 4 stars. Their branching out to more U.S. gateways is useful to customers going to Europe and beyond. It's not a strong 4 stars because I'm not a fan of any A321-XLR, their pricing tiers shouldn't be spaced as far apart as they are, and in-flight service could be a little more affable. However, there is no doubt that TAP Air Portugal has positioned itself as one of the better options for going to Portugal, Europe, and points beyond. read more

TAP has always been an inferior airline - especially when it comes to customer server. But, they've hit a new low. I was traveling to and from Madeira 8/16 through 8/26. Ahead of the vacation, I called them bc I have an autistic son who requires some accommodations (required by law). They said I had to fill out some form. But, the form only listed three neurological conditions and none was autism. I can assure you that the law does not require filling out any forms. Further, my 87 year old mother broke her elbow in Madeira. I called and they said I needed to give 72 hours notice with another form. My mom broke her elbow with less than 72 hours left in our trip. Was I supposed to fill out the form everyday just in case. Also, I sent them a letter in 4/12 letting them know of my a son's situation. I didn't get a reply. At all. Where we checked in for our flight home, the five of us were spread across the plane. I had to fight tooth and nail to finally get a my son a seat next to me - bc other passengers accepted moves. That's unacceptable. And, I'm not litigious, but I will be presenting the ignored letter to my attorney. At every single step, TAP committed all over itself. Don't use TAP read more

Very disappointed as I upgraded my Economy seat to Business class. After paying $343 for seats and luggage in Economy, which is included with Business Class, I was not refunded my money for that once my bid was accepted. A total money grab by TAP. I like to book economy and then bid to upgrade to Business or First Class and with American and United once you upgrade you get refunded your earlier purchase. TAP instead feels it is more important to keep the money and basically double hit the customer for the same service. So I paid for seats in Economy...and then paid again in Business Class. Same with the luggage. This was not something where you take the money you have already paid and upgrade from that point. This was a separate bid process apart from your current seats. Being a Travel Agent myself I will definitely be steering people away from TAP Portugal! read more

We flew from LA to Libson and then to London and it was great! I was so worried about it because I had never heard of the airline and it was great! Great food and great service! The seats were comfortable and it was just wonderful! read more

Ok the international flight from Portugal to San Francisco went very well. The seats were not small, and they fed us well and also gave us wine. So I want to upgrade my earlier trashing of the local flight ( Venice to Lisbon) . But be aware if you do fly TAP ( 3 hrs flight) that you will get nothing but a small cup of water and one skinny piece of chocolate. read more

Just not worth it. Bought flight(s. I guess there weren't one way direct flights) to Florence from NYC with one connection in Lisbon and awful. Both flights were delayed for questionable/no real reasons for an hour plus each. For some reason, they also operate many flights not even from the gate so you have to shuttle from walking out the gate to where the plane actually is and that takes forever on top of the no question delay that's bound to happen (or worse, cancel). This was one of the worse airlines I've flown, and I've traveled a fair deal. Problem #1- They canceled our initial flight (3PM) the week before our trip and automatically booked us on a 6AM flight. My boyfriend called and was able to get us on an evening (5PM) flight instead. Problem #2- Our flight was delayed, which we didn't learn until we arrived at the airport. A bummer, because we could have stayed home longer instead of hanging around at the gate! Problem #3- When we should have been boarding, they suddenly announced a gate change and everyone had to hustle across the terminal. Problem #4- We stood around for a half an hour to an hour with NO communication. Then, one of the reps got on the mic to say our flight had been delayed "indefinitely." It was another half hour to an hour before we finally got to board. Two hours on the ground (not even sure whether or not this was including or in addition to the already hour it was delayed) The problem I think had something to do with them being able to deboard passengers with special mobility needs, which seems like a lack of preparation or protocol on the airline's part Problem #5- They charge you for EVERYTHING besides tap water on the flight. I felt really bad for the guy next to me because he was willing to pay for a meal but they weren't able to accept his type of credit card, so he was SOL until we landed. Honestly, I thought the least they could have done would be to give everyone a complimentary bag of chips or chocolate or cookies or something to apologize for the 2+ hour delay, but NOPE, nothing but a half-mumbled apology from the pilot 2 hours into the flight. I was surprised we got that much. Problem #6- On the returning flight, they randomly insisted I check my carry-on bag because it was "too big." It's standard size and other people had larger. They were just full and randomly making people check cabin luggage because the flight was full. Judging from the other reviews this happens quite frequently. My boyfriend has taken them a couple of times in the past and said that when he did the plane was 15-20 min late each time. The only good thing about this experience was that it was a warning for him that he should avoid this airline for future business travel. This hassle was a bummer for our vacation, but I cannot even imagine dealing with this kind of mess if you had an important business trip or a tight connecting flight. Don't risk it! Pay a little more and go with a different airline. (Totally do visit Portugal though because it's gorgeous!) read more

Was treated so "badly" by TAP airlines employees at the Lisbon, Portugal airport that I had a "panic attack"!! I've received no reply from the corporate office and "no acountability" from anyone at airport~ What a shame.....Portugal is quite beautiful but the people are very "strange"!! This is the worst airline known to man. On our way to Lisbon from Boston we paid for seats in comfort plus and then when we arrived we discovered that our seats were moved to the back of the plane. We did not get our money back. And then, on the way back from Lisbon to boston we had to make a pit stop due to "technical reasons" prior to leaving lisbon and waited in the heat (100 degrees) for an hour. There is a baby on board as this is extremely dangerous. They also lost our bags in lisbon! WORST AIRLINE ever. Fly delta not worth your time. read more

125$ per checked bag. No free beverages or snacks. They forced passengers to check carry-ons when the flight wasn't even full and plenty of overhead bin space. Had to spend 15 minutes packed like sardines on a bus before getting packed like sardines on a plane with the least legroom I've ever experienced. I'm 5'8" and my knees were hitting the seat in front of me. Why bother with boarding by zone when everyone just gets crammed into the same bus? In fact, people in higher zones had to wait even longer on the bus and then longer on the plane while waiting for a second bus to board. I will gladly pay a little more to avoid flying on TAP next time. read more

F*CK this airline. I'm never flying this POS airline again. My original round trip flight from JFK to Lisbon was $542. Then the day before my departure and return flight back to JFK they cancel my flight and move it to a day later (1/25/23 instead of my original 1/24/23) without telling me and I had to find out when I tried to check in online and couldn't. When I asked why my flight was canceled and moved without any warning or notification, I was told "these things happen" When I asked to be rebooked, they told me they don't see any available flights for 1/24/23 (I can't fly back 1/25/23 because I have work that day) funny because I found a flight on Priceline that they claimed doesn't exist because if it existed they can rebook me for free, but since the flight doesn't exist because they couldn't "see" it... I had to pay $500 out of pocket!! Then when I arrived to the gate they charged me AGAIN for my carry-on because they said it weighs more than 12kg but they forced me to combine my carry-on and personal item. They told me it's their policy to weigh it all together and if I won't pay €125 then I can't take my carry-on and personal with me. €125 for a f*cking carry-on?? Are you f*cking kidding me??? This airline has cost me $542 for half of a round trip flight, the other half of which they canceled with no reason or explanation. Forced me to book a last minute one way flight for $500 and now they are charging me €125 for a carry on that is "overweight" for the 12kg limit because they forced me to weigh my backpack (5kg) and my carry-on (11kg) together. F*ck this airline and f*ck the people who work for them. I hope it goes bankrupt and all the corrupt ass jerks who work here lose their jobs too. Update (7 mins later): There was a guy behind me in line who took a bunch of stuff (shoes, scarf, clothes, a toiletries bag) out of his suitcase and tried to stuff them in his coat and pockets and the lady (supervisor who told me pay €125 or forfeit my carry-on) saw him doing it and told him he cannot do that because it's not fair to other passengers who already paid (guess she has a quota and didn't want to let an extra €125 slip away, lol) She made him put everything back into his suitcase and weigh it (13.8kg) and now he has to pay €125 too. Do not expect to board or depart on time. It almost seems like the flight comes as a surprise to the crew and staff. Flight attendants stood around until almost departure time. Then they finally boarded to prep the plane. Probably the fault of other incompetent staff but seriously annoying. I flew their Executive class which was extremely disappointing. While the seats and privacy were not great, the main problem is the indifference of the cabin crew. Do not expect a drink before departure. Expect to have to ask for what you want as they are unlikely to offer. I finally had to take my own trash for disposal as they never came by. In business class the attendants should be in the aisle frequently. They need to improve service significantly. I have flown business class on many airlines. The service on TAP Airlines was the worst. A high bar to achieve but they managed handily. read more

We bought tickets months ago from Chicago to Valencia with layover in Lisbon. Before our trip we noticed the system had applied the same last name incorrectly to each passenger in the system for the return flight only. We called customer service to fix this issue. They made it seem as if there was no problem. As per their request, we sent pictures of our passport to the correct last name. This was two months prior to our flight. We thought it would've been corrected but the day of our flight we realized there was no correction and that was when everything fell apart. After calling customer service, getting disconnected many times, and speaking to an agent - who wasn't even TAP because they contract out to Swissport in the València airport. We bought a ticket many times more than the original to Lisbon. Next we had to figure out the Lisbon to Chicago portion and the customer service agent in Lisbon said there was nothing they could do to help us and in fact the other ticket was canceled because of the purchase of the ticket in Valencia. After all that, we had to purchase another ticket to Chicago 3x the cost of the original to get home. We have felt absconded, robbed and traumatized from this trip. Not to mention whole dealing with customer service our bags were placed in a non moving belt so we had to physically climb onto the belt to retrieve our bags. Avoid at all costs. Worst airline ever. The plane itself is tiny inside. Walking down its extremely narrow and easy to hit people no matter how hard you try to be courteous. The seats were awful. I was in so much pain by the end of our 10-hour journey. I was in tears. My back, butt, legs, and back were achy and sore. I swear a fetus has more space in the womb. Food was inedible. And their drink options were a lot less than I expected. No sprite, no cranberry juice, ect The steward and stewardesses were lacking in customer service. When it was finally time for our turn to order a beverage, that's when they decided to leave the cart and do something else for a bit. They never offered us ice in our drinks despite everyone else being asked. They also lost our luggage. I'm on holiday with no clothes, no toothbrush, no nothing and no apologies or compensation. To top it all off, they switched our flight connection. We were supposed to be arriving at Heathrow, and instead, they sent us to Gatwick. We had to take a million trains, busses and lots of walking before we finally reached our hotel. We had planned our trip perfectly. Our hotel was supposed to be close by, but all these errors made by the airline have ruined my entire trip. It's my first trip since covid. This was supposed to be special and fun. We were flying back from Geneva to SFO after a vacation. Just a few mins prior to departure / before we boarded, our hand baggage (trolley suitcase) was checked for weight and we were charged for excess weight(2kgs extra). I had only a purse and the trolley suitcase and my husband had a backpack. We could have easily adjusted the weight and distributed it between the back pack and suitcase. We even requested that we throw away a few things to bring the weight down to 10 kgs. But we were not even given a chance to talk and we were forced to either pay or not board the flight. It is very unfair that other passengers were not even checked and only we were picked as we were the only Asian Indians to board then flight. Others were allowed to carry bulging bags and were not even checked. At the next transit. at Lisbon airport , people were allowed to weigh their hand baggage and throw stuff/ repack, to avoid paying for excess baggage. We were not even allowed to throw anything or re arrange our hand baggage at Geneva airport. The staff at Geneva were very rude and did not give us a chance to even speak. Especially the guy named S.Egger was extremely rude and nasty. We were treated like culprits and it was extremely disrespectful. We were charged unfairly and treated extremely disrespectfully. And the luggage we had to pay for did not even arrive at San Fransisco. read more

I am writing to report a very negative experience I had at PAT. I had a flight from GVA to LIS on the May 16th and returned on the 19th. I had a pleasant flight from GVA to Lisbon on the 16th. When I tried to check in for the flight on the 19th, I was told my reservation was canceled because I did not show up for the flight on the 16th! After several calls with customer service, and having emailed them my boarding pass, they still insisted that I did not board the plane and I should go to the airport! I went to the airport. At the airport, I was told that they only sell tickets there, and I needed to contact customer service. Back and forth between customer service and airport personnel. They insisted that, although I had a boarding pass, it is possible that I left the gate and went from Geneva to Lisbon some other way. Would the more logical option be that the gate agent did not scan my boarding pass? They insisted that if I did not want to be stranded at the airport, I had to buy a new ticket. I would give this airline no stars. We were scheduled to go to Italy, and TAP Airlines sent a notice before our flight that we needed a COVID test 48 hrs before departure. We had our negative test results and vaccine documents in hand when we arrived at the desk, and a rude employee said that the test needed to be a 24-hour test and we weren't allowed on the plane. We lost 36 hours of our vacation and had to travel to Istanbul ($1000.00) and stay there for 20 hours, and TAP refused to refund the money, which cost us a lot in addition to the $1000.00 because we had upgraded our seats. We said we would never use TAP again but were lured by an inexpensive trip to the Netherlands that turned out to be another terrible trip. We were squeezed into uncomfortable seats, and the food was inedible and made with the cheapest ingredients. The servers were surly and rude and made a fuss about carry-on bags, and we had to turn in the bags. The staff ghosted us for most of the flight, except for providing instructions in the event of an emergency. Our flights were delayed numerous times, and TAP didn't inform us about delays and changes in where we would board. TAP was more than an hour late getting us to our next destination, and there was not enough time between flights to get to our connecting flight. The staff dismissed our concerns when we told them that we and other guests would miss our connecting flights and said to them that our flight was boarding while we were still on the plane. Luckily, the connecting flight was late; however, he had to run to the connecting flight that was nowhere near where we landed, and we barely made it to the gate. The staff was inattentive; most had a negative attitude and did not know anything about customer service. TAP IS THE WORST AIRLINE I HAVE EVER USED. Hadn't taken TAP Portugal Airlines in awhile and was thoroughly impressed with the service I received while traveling on my way to Terceira, Azores. I had a long layover and for $30 bought a TAP Premier Pass and it was so worth the price! The lounge is very inviting with endless food and drinks along with a well stocked bar. There are plenty of comfortable areas to sit and lots of plugs for charging electronics. The view is of the tarmac with plenty of planes landing and taking off. The staff is very professional, helpful and friendly. They even have showers and plenty of bathrooms. Overall, a very great layover experience! read more

I will never, ever book a TAP Portugal flight again! They have really shown themselves to be of poor character in this pandemic. I booked a flight back in June to Portugal, which the airline canceled due to COVID. Understandable. But I have called multiple times through Orbitz to get my refund for my $400 to no avail. If you cancel the flight, the customer is eligible for a refund. I've been trying for over a year to get my $$ back and at this point it's ridiculous. I would say to anyone considering flying this airline, don't. I'm sure there are other discount airlines out there that don't treat their customers this horribly. Not to mention the airline got a government bailout, so it makes zero sense why they could not simply refund the flights that they themselves canceled. read more

The airline is horrible is terms of service. And that's if I'm being nice. if I'm being honest the service was racist. there was a tangible and obvious difference in how white and black customers were treated. at the gate we were forced to check bags that were within Carry on guidelines. when we asked why? "because it is a packed flight" only to board a half empty plane with literally empty overhead storage bins. the staff was unresponsive and flat out rude throughout. The absolute WORST AIRLINE IN THE WORLD!!!!! I could not be more disgusted with this airline by their lack of competence, lack of customer service and simply not caring!! For the past couple of months, it has been one issue or setback or headache after the next. The website/app are both horrendous to navigate and crash constantly. When I called customer service about not being able to access my flight via app they could not resolve the issue. Speaking of customer service, the agents on the phone are not properly trained on how to effectively fix issues. They give you a constant loop of bogus excuses and promises that result in no progress. Some of the agents are arrogant and haughty, however I did not enable them. Apart from the various issues I had with the crappy online resources and customer service, that isn't even the worst part of my experience. Today, I am supposed to be leaving for an international flight with this airline, but to no avail. A few days ago- I received a flurry of e-mails from TAP stating they cancelled and refunded my flight. Thing is, I DID NOT SUBMIT NOR APPROVE of this!! I pull up my flight and poof it is magically gone! This is days before my flight and naturally I feel a wave of panic. For three days straight I called customer service constantly. I asked for answers as to why and how this happened without my approval. No success! I pleaded with them as they showed ZERO sense of urgency. Meanwhile my entire big trip to Europe is riding on this flight!! They kept feeding me false promises and nonsense. I demanded to speak to a supervisor who could fix this- of course I was declined. They kept trying to contact the "back office" to resolve this case.. but nobody answered. I was absolutely livid, frustrated and thoroughly displeased with this horrid booking and customer service experience. By chance, I had family in Portugal this week and they went to the TAP airport help desk in Lisbon and they were fed the same line of crap. What kind of customer service is that???!! GARBAGE. In the end, accountability prevails. I am sharing my VALID experience and exposing their crap company. They sure as hell will NEVER receive my business nor my family's again. Worst customer service of any airline I have ever flown with. Website malfunctions constantly, phone app is even worse, and to reach a human being in customer service, be prepared to be on hold for more than an hour, then get transferred to someone who will require another lengthy hold. Not only is TAP unreliable and chintzy but they make no effort to communicate with customers unless it is to tell them what they can't do for them. The Web site was an early warning which I should have heeded. It is full of up-charges and extra fees. By the time you get to checkout, your price is substantially higher than what you are first presented with. It's a sleazy practice and lets you know what kind of experience you are in for. I have status on United but my companion was not allowed to use Fast track with me as we do everywhere else in the world - likely because TAP gets charged per person and would rather nickel and dime frequent fliers than provide the true Star Alliance service levels. I wouldn't be surprised if they end up getting kicked out of Star given how much lower their service quality is versus the rest of the group. Our flight was delayed and not only did they not give us any updates for hours via any channel, there were no staff even available to speak to...in Lisbon airport, their main hub. I learned later that there was an alternate flight we could have been switched to but of course it was impossible to know that given the complete information blackout. Once we finally got onto a plane, the flight staff were austere and unhelpful. I had to stop them as they rushed their cart by to even get a drink of water. Tight, tiny seats with no power to charge devices. Some rows were almost empty, others were packed. So many obvious places for them to make life better for customers but they clearly don't care about that. If I could give 0 stars I would. DO NOT FLY WITH THIS COMPANY! I booked a flight in November 2019 for June 2020. Clearly, the June trip did not happen due to Covid-19. It is completely understandable that they had to cancel the flight (no one could have predicted a global pandemic). What is not understandable is that I still am waiting for a refund that I requested when the flight was canceled in June. I have called multiple times - most of the time, the phone would be picked up and then hung up. The few times I got through, I was told to keep waiting. First it was going to take 2 weeks for a refund. Then 4-6 weeks. Then 2-3 months. We are now 10 months from the original request and I still have not been refunded. Spent 2 hours connecting to customer service because we had to cancel a flight due to covid (all of this within the 24 hour period). They promised a full refund and stated the amount, but then apparently they charge a $30 tax cancellation that they failed to mention. So I spent even more time calling back for them to say they can't do anything and are sorry they didn't mention it. Never will I ever book through them or allow anyone I know to. Never ever book flights on this airlines. Their price may be cheap and but If you ever have to change even if you buy their PLUS ticket , they charge 3 to 4 times more on the fare difference. Flying from Newark to Porto they said my wheelie was too big and they checked it for free. Flying back from Lisbon they weighed my wheelie, the very same wheelie, and now they said its too heavy and that I would have to check it at a cost of 125 Euros. What a scam! I wanted to express my recent travel experience using both American Airlines and TAP Air Portugal. This was an extremely frustrating experience, and caused quite a bit of upheaval on the date of outbound travel. I booked a round trip ticket from PHX to LIS on May 12, 2023 and a return from MAD to PHX on May 21, 2023. Additionally, since I am arriving from Flagstaff (my home) - I booked a separate award ticket on May 12, 2023 so I would arrive at PHX in ample time. The problem with doing this was it did not connect my reservations, even though both flights were on American. I boarded on American Flight 460 and was ready to head to Philadelphia. The flight crew was confident I would make the connection and be good to go. Approximately 1 hour into the flight, the Captain came on the speaker and identified this flight had engine issues. Due to the weight provided by the fuel, we had to circle around Phoenix before landing at 15:56. We were deplaned, waited at the gate, and reboarded at approximately 17:15. This ensured there would be ZERO chance to make the connecting flight in Philadelphia onto Lisbon (AA 258). The major issue at play was I booked a separate reservation through TAP Air Portugal, since my final destination of Sao Tome (TMS) was NOT served by American Airlines or any Oneworld partners. I was able to get to Philadelphia around 00:23 (on May 13, 2023); however, this was well beyond the time my connecting flight to Lisbon left (21:20 on May 12, 2023). During this flight, I purchased the $25 Wi-Fi so I could attempt to change my flight from Lisbon to Sao Tome, which departed Lisbon at 11:40 AM on 5/13/23 and arrived in Sao Tome at 17:15 (TP 1531 - Record Locator RLPRH6). This was not possible since neither the Mobile App, nor the website would allow changes. In Philadelphia - American Airlines offered me a hotel, which I declined to stay with friends instead. This resulted in a $37.97 charge from Uber to get into Central Philadelphia. Arriving at my friend's around 1:30 AM without my baggage (since it was held inside Terminal A and I arrived in Terminal C) - I was exhausted and fell asleep. The next morning, I called TAP Air Portugal to let them know about this misconnect and that's where things really got fun. I was sent to a call center that basically stated my flights were canceled and I would have to rebook an entirely new fare for $1,000 (after paying nearly $1,000 for the original ticket). I begged if it was possible just to move the outbound flight one day, and I was told no. I asked what options were available to salvage this trip, and I was told nothing - my flight was canceled. I spoke with the manager and still no resolve. I had booked the first night of lodging on May 13, 2023 in Sao Tome at a cost of $150, and the second night of lodging on May 14, 2023 at a cost of $250. These were not refunded. I tried reaching every avenue with the airline and was met with "your flight is canceled and you must rebook a new fare." Additionally, I had arranged a local guide at a cost of 200 Euro. This guide lost out on an opportunity to make money in a country that does not see tourism. I still tried to make the best out of this and boarded the flight to Lisbon on May 13, 2023 at 21:05 (AA 258). I was given the option to upgrade to first class, which I did considering the ordeal so far. Instead of the original amount quoted of $25, the amount was now $350. Seems significant considering all I went through at this point. I did arrive in Lisbon the following morning without any plan, accommodation, or way to continue my original itinerary. Additionally, I lost my Airpod in the first class cabin (was in Seat 3D) and the flight attendant in the cabin was less than helpful when I tried to find this. I was truly met with a nasty attitude, which isn't how passengers who lost something in an upgraded cabin should be treated. Once I got to Lisbon, TAP AirPortugal stated I would not be able to travel and advised me to sort this out when I get home. I was truly defeated at this point following the entire debacle. As much as I wanted to make the best of things - I decided I wasn't about to spend any more money on flights and to just find something in Lisbon - a city I never intended to visit in the first place. I settled on the Moxy Lisbon at an additional cost of $209.15. I went to the hotel and fell asleep - defeated by the whole process in a city I never intended to visit in the first place. The best part - I bid for an upgrade on my flight back from Sao Tome to Lisbon (TAP Air Portugal Flight TP 1532 departing on May 15, 2023) and this was accepted AFTER the customer service representative stated my flight was canceled. I was charged $400 for a flight that the AIRLINE canceled and returning from a destination I wasn't even able to visit. Absolutely shameful. As somebody who travels often (I am Platinum Status with American Airlines and Silver Status with United Airlines) - this was unlike any experience. read more

Flight from JFK to LISBON was a breeze. No issues. The way back to JFK was a nightmare. No one checks a single passport until you get to customs which is after baggage check in and security. I find that odd. Once we got to our gate they stopped everyone with a carry on and required you to weigh and size the bag. Three people in my party were REQUIRED to pay $165/bag at the GATE. Meanwhile we were told everything was fine when I was at check in paying for my bag downstairs. May I add I only paid $135 downstairs. If you did not pay the $165/bag at the gate they would not allow you to take the bag on the plane. This was a complete scam and very misleading. They had get as much money out of us as they could before we left. I do not recommend this airline mainly because of this issue. Our 3 bags came to $500!! I used TAP for my flight from Valencia to Lisboa and from Lisboa to Newark. Overall it was a decent experience. Price was decent especially for my Intra European Flight. A free check bag and even free drink service and a snack on my flight. For my flight to Newark, I even able to reserve an aisle bulkhead seat without special status or extra fees. Just love the legroom! Planes though were a little old and need some maintenance. Will I fly TAP again? Yes, certainly as long as the price is right! read more
