The tram ride from one end to the other takes 2:40 and climbs one of the steepest slopes in the city. It opened for passengers in 1892. What's interesting about this ride is that it is not an independent track. The path where the train rides is also open to vehicles and pedestrians. It is considered one of the most picturesque streets in Lisbon, if not Europe. The Elevador is operated by the same Carris that runs the subway, trams and buses. If you've bought a 24 hour pass, you can scan your Viagem card and it's included. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a ticket from the driver onboard - he takes cash. Regardless of that fact, it's a cool place for some photo ops. This is where you see all of those Lisbon shots on Instagram. We didn't walk up the entire hill but it was a sight to see. We didn't have time to come back another day to see if the tram was running since our time in Lisbon was limited, but if this is a must-see for you, just be sure to budget enough time on your trip. We were warned at our hotel about pickpockets here, they were hawkers offering us rides & things. We weaved past churches, shops, cafes, museums, lots of beautiful tiled buildings. On the green line, the next station is Baixa-Chiado towards Telheiras. The metro station is completely handicapped accessible with lifts and escalators between the street level and platform level. There are automated ticket vending machines for the metro. I was here to catch the ferry, which of course is at street level. Separate vending machines for ferry tickets and a clear display indicating not only how long until the next ferry departs, the gate (there are three gates) and what percentage full. Purchasing the ferry ticket was easy (only €1.80 including the €0.50 for a new Viagem card) and quick. I was able to buy my ticket at 16:35, scan it and still board the 16:40 ferry to Cacilhas.
