DANIELLE IS THE BEST!!! First day in Lisbon (post redeye) and this tour is probably the highlight of the entire trip. Dani was a wonderful wonderful guide - funny, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about her city and food. We started with black ham + cheese + olive oil + bread paired with red wine at a cute local grocery store. Then moved on to pasteis de bachaluo (cod fritters) with tomato rice and a nice glass of vihno verde. Third stop, bifana (yum!) and portugués beer. The walk through the moorish neighborhood was a lovely way to see the culture and community atmosphere - Dani kept stopping to say hi or waved to everyone in the street! At the top we enjoyed samosa (vegetarian and meat) to experience the ethnic cuisine from Portuguese colonies and more beer. We wandered back downtown for the most excellent pasteles de nata - a classic! - and espresso. We topped it all off with granfana (the special cherry liquor / fortified wine).

It was a personable and memorable experience that I will never forget. We couldn't have asked for a better personal guide than Ricardo! Upon hearing of our sightseeing plans for the day, he suggested a side trip to the beach towns of Estoril and Cascais before heading up the mountains to Sintra. He was so informative and engaging, and a great conversationalist, making my girlfriend and me feel quite at ease. It was a great decision; we were treated to a very personalized tour of three towns, complete with multiple photo ops and food/drink places to try. We spent the entire day tooling around in an awesome Beetle, with a friendly and warm guide, and felt like every Euro was deserved. I can safely say we'd use Lisbon By Beetle again, whenever we come back to visit Lisbon!

This was the best decision of our cruise. Jose' led us on a tour of the real Lisbon. A former school teacher the tour involved culture, history and great food recommendations. It truly was the highlight of our vacation. If you want to actually see the city, learn its history and experience a little of its actual culture, book this tour. If you have a larger group (ours was 8) you can book a private tour by pre-paying a tip and have the incredible experience we had. Jose' will customize the tour to your interests and physical ability. Be aware Lisbon is very hilly. Our tour involved climbing both of the major hills in the city. I was thankful there was not a third hill.

Our guide was the head honcho of this operation, and gave us a true "locals" insight on the lay of the land. Unlike some tours, each Chill Out Lisbon is different, as they prioritize catering to each specific audience. Before you step out on your FREE tour, they'll ask questions to see what you really want to see and learn about the city. How awesome is that. We saw several of the main landmarks, but even more of the "roots" of Lisbon. My favorite parts being the Alfama district, and the grand finale. I won't spoil the grand finale but I'll say it's most definitely worth staying to the end. Thanks to our wonderful guide, I believe their name was Jose, but pardon me if I am mistaken. If you can, please tip your lovely guide; they will most likely let you know they are open to receiving tips.

This "tour" was no different, perhaps even worse than the rest. Honestly the tram did not go further than I could have walked myself, but it did save me from any uphill walks in this hilly city. It also did not take me anywhere that I could not have gone on the "regular" tram which is much cheaper, however I did note that those trams got really jam packed whereas on this tram I always had a seat. The ticket is good for 24 hours and allows you to ride the tram as many times as you like, as well as gives you free access to other modes of public transportation in the city. Personally I definitely did not get 20 EUR worth of valley as I only got off at two stops and on the way back there was a broken down trolley that forced us to all get off and walk the rest of the way, however I did appreciate always having a seat and not having to jam myself onto the public tram.

Perfect First-Time Lisbon Experience -- Outstanding Tuk Tuk Tour with Pedro…read more This was our first time visiting Lisbon, and booking a tuk tuk tour with Pedro was hands-down the best way to start our trip. He was absolutely fantastic--extremely knowledgeable about the history of Portugal and able to explain everything in a clear, engaging, and memorable way. His English was excellent, which made the experience effortless and enjoyable. Pedro curated an incredible route that gave us a true overview of the city, perfect for first-timers. We visited highlights such as Lisbon Cathedral, Miradouro das Portas do Sol, and Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, with breathtaking views we never would have found on our own. We passed through historic neighborhoods like Graça, São Vicente, and Alfama, as well as landmarks including Panteão Nacional. The tour also took us to Belém, where we stopped at Pastéis de Belém, and visited Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Torre de Belém, and Padrão dos Descobrimentos. We also passed through central areas like Praça do Comércio, Chiado, Largo do Carmo, Bairro Alto, and Basílica da Estrela. What made this tour especially valuable as first-time visitors was Pedro's local insight beyond the sightseeing. He shared excellent recommendations for authentic local restaurants, traditional dishes to try, and which were best for meals. We also really appreciated his flexibility. We asked to end the tour at Time Out Market Lisboa instead of returning to our hotel so we could grab dinner, and he graciously accommodated the request without hesitation. If it's your first time in Lisbon and you want a tour that's informative, personalized, and genuinely helpful for the rest of your trip, Pedro is the guide you want. Highly, highly recommend.

Interesting Cram Course In Lisbon's Jewish History…read more... With 3 full days to explore Lisbon, we started with a 3 1/2 hour tour on the first afternoon focusing on the Jewish history of the city. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: - We met our guide, Daniel, in the Principe Real section of Lisbon and walked a couple miles toward the Baixa and Chiado neighborhoods. He was more knowledgeable than an encyclopedia...as personable as an entertainer and tied lots of historical loose ends together. - Daniel included many of his own personal views which, depending on your outlook, could add or subtract from the experience. For us, it cut both ways. - All in all, a comprehensive and, at times, intense yet enjoyable 3 1/2 hour walking tour with insight into the Jewish past of Lisbon and Europe at large. - Price seemed reasonable.....100 Euros per person. Cons: - As noted above, Daniel included many of his own personal views which, depending on your outlook, could add or subtract from the experience. For us, it cut both ways. - There was quite a bit of walking up and down hills on cobblestone streets, but it's Lisbon, of course...so that's something to keep in mind. We'd recommend this tour, but first see if the primary guide, Paulo, is available.

After spending the better part of the day with him, we had a dramatically better understanding of the Jewish people's contributions to Portuguese (and Spanish) society over the past 700 years, as well as what life has been like for Jews living on the Iberian Peninsula from the 15th Century through the present. Paolo went above and beyond what we expected, and was also delightful to spend time with. We ended our time with him feeling as though we had spent the day with a great teacher and a friend.
