    Arriving from ORD
    Rohan D.

My experience was positive because first and foremost, I got a great deal on round trip tickets from Chicago to Madrid (via Lisbon of course). The cheapest seats aren't terrible on an Airbus 300, so much more tolerable than the cramped and sometimes dangerous Boeings. They have some strict luggage policies, which is inconvenient for individuals but for the filght we al end up having more room for our limited carryons. In filght entertainment is okay, two of my flights have been too warm on board. So far every flight has been either on time, or slightly delayed. You'll need about 2 hours layover for Lisbon, don't take less because some connections are across the airport and gate announcements can be delayed. At least one meal was pretty good inflight, they don't come by with the beverage cart often enough but I was on a couple of flights with passengers who frequently blocked the aisles. Mask up, lots of people travel sick nowadays.

Our first time flying with TAP Portugal! Their presence at YUL is very small... You'll find their check in counter (no self-check-in kiosks available) tucked away in a corner. Note that they only open 3 hours before the flight's departure time. Since you'll need to check in at the counter, they WILL weigh your bags and suitcases. On the return, we were able to do a self check-in and weigh our own bags but no one is watching you. From YUL, you'll board the plane directly from the gate and passenger boarding bridge but once in Lisbon, you'll need to use the boarding stairs to deplane and take an airport transport bus to the terminal. Same with departures, you'll take a bus and the stairs to board the plane since the Humberto Delgado airport is limited in space, most planes are parked on the tarmac instead of at the gate. The planes are reasonably new and clean. About as comfortable as a typical economy flight can get. Since it's a small Airbus A321neo, there's only 3 bathrooms in economy. Flights from YUL are typically around 10:30 - 10:45pm ET so you can expect the supper service at around 11:30pm. For the return flight, the departure was at 6:30pm local time and the meal and snack service followed the same timing. We thought the food was decent but surprisingly, they still use real utensils! The lights go out after dinner and only come back on a bit before landing for the snack service. They offer pillows and blankets for the transatlantic flights but if sleeping isn't your thing, they do have a wide collection of entertainment options like movies, TV shows, documentaries, Portuguese lessons, Portugal tourist info, etc. things to watch on the highly responsive touch screens. They offer in little paper envelopes free wired headphones in case you forgot yours. For environmental reasons, only open the sealed paper envelopes if you've forgotten yours. The flight crew speak Portuguese first, then follow up with English. You'll likely be greeted "boa noite" (good evening) for your outbound and "boa tarde" (good afternoon) for your inbound flight.

It took us over an hour to get our luggage tags, drop off her bag, go through security and get to our gate. A very busy airport with all languages spoken and lots of planes going in all different directions. They had us weaving through all of their gift shops on our way to the gate. Lots of American fast food options. Information was poorly marked, most spoke English but it was confusing, lines were everywhere & mostly unmarked. When we finally got to our supposedly gate no one was here & again nothing was marked. It was funny :20 before take off people cued up at our gate, we followed suit.

Exhausted, drained, TAP passengers. Obrigado TAP!! For Ruining our Porto-portion of our trip. Don't F with Lisboa!

When we did finally make it in the plane, The leg room was better than some other airlines, the lighting was nicer and the staff was wonderful. Really, they really were. But l! and I repeat BUT! they canceled our flight causing us to lose the first night of three rooms in the center of Porto Portugal. A big chunk of cash lost and precious vacation time, lost. We therefore had to go take another set of Covid tests for all six of us, To fly the following day because the COVID tests that we had done would be expired in 24 hours. When the plane finally took off the next day and landed in Lisbon we were made to wait an eternity going through customs in a never ending spiral of people and no one seemed to worry at all that we were getting closer and closer to our connecting flight. When we got through customs I asked where to go next and someone surprised us with the news that the connecting flight had been canceled as well. We were given lunch vouchers and made to wait for 4 and 1/2 hours getting us into Porto approximately at 130 to 2 PM. So now we've lost two days of vacation. We're left with only one day in Porto and losing two days of the Hop On Hop Off that we had already booked and paid for. We also lost reservations at a very nice restaurant where we each had to pay a non-refundable $25 for the reservation. And here we are still sitting, waiting with an 84 and an 85 year old for our flight. I will do a recap to what TAP Portugal has in store for us because I'm sure this is not over. I should also mention that our flight had many empty seats which leads me to think the flight was canceled because the flight from the previous night didn't have enough people in it. And they canceled because, well, they just could and get away with it. FYI FDA Love, (NOT!) Ernie

Note: This review…read morehad to be moved from its original listing in the U.S. near Newark. It was no longer taking photos I wanted to upload, yet the Lisbon listing was. Yelp needs to change the name of this listing! Its correct name is TAP Air Portugal and, in Portuguese, TAP means "Transportes Aereos Portugueses." I had written a review with an update. The first review was based on 2 flights within Europe. When I added an update, Yelp removed it, citing that the update did not add much. When this happens, it could be a "hall monitor" problem where a creep in the obscurity of the internet decides to make a project out of you or perhaps colorful language in the review was not welcomed, with words like 'melodramatic Portuguese countenances that almost sing the fado' regarding the cabin crew, which is something I find more interesting than looking at vapid Americans. What's wrong with such language? The fado is Portugal's brand of the blues and have you ever noticed how soulful and intense the physiognomies of some fado singers are? I find that bohemian (af) millennial travel writers write passages like this and, in addition to passing muster, it makes reading their accounts more detailed, visual, and enjoyable. That update was actually based on 4 TAP transatlantic flights from the U.S. to Europe. - - - - - For the TAP flights from Lisbon to Portugal's island of Madeira and Venice (VCE), they were at about 3 stars. I liked their fares, their schedule, and the economy tickets made for a paltry number of miles to add to my United account. The flight to Madeira was better and the approach to the island, and its airport up on pylons, was spectacular. The flight to Venice was strange. Some activity on the field at VCE kept us from landing and we were sent to land at Bologna (BLQ), making the continuation a 15-minute flight. They handed out small bone-in chicken breasts, which seemed strange. In that same span of years, Iberia of Spain gave you nothing! Shorter flights now always feature snacks. Within Europe, TAP is comparable to Iberia, but slightly better. In the update, now rolled into this one review, I had gone on to "cross the pond" with them from Newark, JFK, BOS, and MIA. They now have more U.S. gateways and more connection options from Lisbon onward. Those flights ranged from 4 to 5 stars. The best things about their transatlantic flights were their pricing, their punctuality, and their newer Airbus 330-900neo planes. The negatives were few. Compared to Iberia and yesteryear's Alitalia, their cabin crews were a little more standoffish. I also do not care for the single aisle Airbus 321-XLR with wafer-thin Recaro seats, but more carriers are using it on shorter transatlantic routes. I prefer yesteryear's bulkier upholstered seats. It's all about penciling things out. With thinner seats, they can put more of them on a plane. Since taking those transatlantic flights, TAP has really spread its wings in North America. Beyond Newark, JFK, BOS, and MIA, they have added two Star Alliance hubs - Washington DC and Chicago. They have sensibly added service to Canada, to both Toronto and Montreal. More recently, they have expanded to the West Coast, first coming into SFO, also a Star Alliance hub, and closer to the Portuguese community in the Bay Area and in the Central Valley. They don't make the trip daily. When in NorCal, I saw their Airbus 330-900 land at SFO from the shoreline. In its distinctive livery, it made for a beautiful sight and Lisbon was now connected to America's West Coast! Lastly, I was having lunch with a friend near LAX and was taken aback seeing a TAP A330 on finals. While not daily, TAP had recently added Los Angeles! So far, this looks like a 4-star situation. I almost wanted to drop TAP to 3 stars for a poor flight from the UK to Portugal. A younger flight attendant evidently had some coworkers or friends on board and talked to them for most of the flight, almost wincing if passengers asked (for) something (of her). This was the poorest service I've seen on a European flight. I had not yet flown on TAP from Europe to the U.S. Not having purchased a ticket to come home, the trek I had my eye on - Iberia from the Algarve to Madrid and then to the U.S. - went way up in price. TAP delivered and I was able to get to the U.S. in summer if I first took the 6 a.m. flight from Faro to Lisbon. For about $425, that flight to MIA, with a checked bag and "my" window seat, was incredibly smooth and arrived ahead of schedule. I'm giving TAP an entry-level 4 stars. Their branching out to more U.S. gateways is useful to customers going to Europe and beyond. It's not a strong 4 stars because I'm not a fan of any A321-XLR, their pricing tiers shouldn't be spaced as far apart as they are, and in-flight service could be a little more affable. However, there is no doubt that TAP Air Portugal has positioned itself as one of the better options for going to Portugal, Europe, and points beyond.

Ahead of the vacation, I called them bc I have an autistic son who requires some accommodations (required by law). They said I had to fill out some form. But, the form only listed three neurological conditions and none was autism. I can assure you that the law does not require filling out any forms. Further, my 87 year old mother broke her elbow in Madeira. I called and they said I needed to give 72 hours notice with another form. My mom broke her elbow with less than 72 hours left in our trip. Was I supposed to fill out the form everyday just in case. Also, I sent them a letter in 4/12 letting them know of my a son's situation. I didn't get a reply. At all. Where we checked in for our flight home, the five of us were spread across the plane. I had to fight tooth and nail to finally get a my son a seat next to me - bc other passengers accepted moves. That's unacceptable. And, I'm not litigious, but I will be presenting the ignored letter to my attorney. At every single step, TAP committed all over itself. Don't use TAP

We stopped in Lisbon on our way from the Azores to Madrid. We had to get our luggage and re check in and go through security because we switched airlines (standard)...HOWEVER there was ONE ticket counter open with more than 25 people in line. When we finally did get up to the counter (close to an hour later) we were told that our seats were not confirmed (despite what our confirmation said) and they had over booked the flight. They gave us standby tickets and told us to wait at the gate to see if we could get on. Half of our party was able to get on the flight the other half was not. The next flight available was in 5 hours. After waiting at that gate for 2 hours they gave us a voucher to get 125 Euro back, oh but you can't redeem it here because this is not a hub airport. Ok now we will let you go to the Lounge to wait for your next flight, but wait...your luggage that we made you check, is at baggage claim...now... So you have to go pick it up, but one more catch...we won't take it back for the next flight until 2 hours before the flight. So you have 2 options, let your luggage go around the carousel for 3 hours while you wait in the lounge, or leave and get your bags so they don't get stolen but we won't let you re check in for 3 hours. TOTALLY unacceptable. You don't have a system to forward our luggage to our next flight since YOU overbooked? Some speak Spanish, but not many will speak English. So if you need assistance either finding the right way to go, or regarding your luggage, it will be tough to find someone who can converse without a translator. Except of course for the customs agents, they are always at least quadrilingual. There is only one area for baggage claim, so you just need to follow the signs. Although before you get there, you'll need to first go through the new EES system, which will have long lines, although it does go by somewhat quickly. If you use the app Travel To Europe, you can answer all the questions ahead of time. Although you will still need to go to the customs booth to have your photo and right hand fingerprints taken. This is now just an added security feature required for anyone visiting Europe. This new EES system was just implemented on April 9th, 2026, and in the first month, there were insane delays resulting in travelers missing their connecting flights, but they are currently allowing those with children, and with any disabled to bypass this and go straight to the custom agents. Once you go through that, then you can head to baggage claim. So you definitely should use the restroom right when you exit the plane, cuz it might be an hour or more 'til you can again. Btw you won't know which carousal has your bags until you get there. There will be screens at each one showing the different flights. Upon entering the terminal, there was nobody from the airline to answer questions or direct passengers where to go ... so I just followed the herd and after a long meandering walk we ended up in the luggage/ground transportation area (no idea if we were supposed to pass through customs). My return flight wasn't much better. First, I highly recommend using FastTrack to get past the security line, but there is no shortcut around the hour to 3-hour immigration line. Of course, the airline called us to board our flight via zone numbers, but then we just boarded buses anyway so it was a free for all once the buses got to the plane and we hiked up the boarding stairs (I guess I should be thankful that the weather was decent). It just seemed like a rinky-dink way of running an international airport, but I guess if you are traveling through Lisbon you don't have much choice.
