We took the Lisbon-Sintra train line & followed the crowds walking:10 to the historic center of town. There were buses, taxis and Tuktuks picking up passengers. We passed art on display & crafts people selling their wares. The station's main building dates from 1887. But it's worth going inside the station, as it's beautifully covered in tiles and includes a tourist office. It also has a ticket office and a ticket machine. We accessed the train platforms can also be done through the station.

During regular hours, there should be a departure every half hour or so and the train to Lisbon takes about 40 minutes. There are a couple vending machines here. Sintra is very much a tourism destination so you can expect taxis and tuk tuks waiting when you arrive. Or just walk and wing it like I did. The station has an automated ticket kiosk and terminal but hopefully, you bought a round trip when you left Lisbon so you don't have to deal with that. For my departure, I scanned my Viagem card, read the departure board and get on my train in less than a minute. Note that the exit in Rossio is from the front so you'll want to move towards a forward car if you have time here. [Review 16655 overall - 167 in Portugal - 167 of 2022.]

The station was formerly known as Estação Central (Central Station) and the name still appears in its façade. Opened in 1891 to designs by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro, the main facade at street level is a wonderful example of Neo-Manueline architecture, named after the heavily decorative hybrid classical-gothic architecture unique to Portugal. It's sinuous curves and entrance arches are reminiscent of Art Nouveau. Once inside, a modern escalator takes you up to the spacious train shed. There's a ticket office, ticket machines and cafe. Trains to Sintra leave every 20 minutes on weekdays (every 10 minutes at rush hour), and half hourly at weekends.

I had walked inside to look at the gift shop on the left and saw the Starbucks on the right, but never saw any indication of a train station there, either. Once I KNEW that it was the train station, I looked harder for a sign, and it was up the elevator from the front of the building. Tickets are at the top of the double elevator and should have been easy to get, but I had to try 3 different machines to get it to work. The machine will encourage you to get a round trip, and know that the round trip ticket is all on one ticket. You won't be issued 2 tickets. The ticket is needed to get in and out of the stations, so make sure to hang onto it until after you've left your final destination. The place is super clean...one of the cleanest train stations I have been in. I wanted this review out here in case someone needed it. I hope it helps folks to avoid the couple of hiccups I had there.

There are 11 platforms, each of which is accessible either via an above ground pedestrian bridge or a below ground lift-served pedestrian subway. The station has many food and shopping options, including the usual selection of coffee shops and food vendors. The departure board is clear and easy to read. The taxi stand is under cover and is well marked. Bus stops are also right outside and easy enough to find.

Although the railway reached York in 1839, the present station dates from a major rebuild by the North Eastern Railway in 1877. It was designed by Thomas Prosser and William Peachey in yellow stock brick with tone dressings, in a broadly classical Italianate style. It was further extended in 1909, but has been rationalised in recent years and now has 11 platforms, and the approach road and access has been improved. It handles over 6 million passengers a year - the busiest in Yorkshire after Leeds. The station is the junction of the lines to Scarborough and Leeds via Harrogate. As well as services on the London-Edinburgh line, it is also served by Cross-Country services from the South West and Midlands to the North East and Scotland, the Trans-Pennine services to Leeds, Manchester, Blackpool and Liverpool, and local services to Hull via Selby. There is also a coach link direct to Leeds-Bradford Airport. The station has all the facilities you'd expect of a major junction, including ample car parking (670 spaces), cycle storage for 446 bicycles, cycle hire, taxi rank, bus stops, a tourist information office, cafes, a bar, newsagents and cash-points. The station has level access, although some of the lifts require station staff assistance. There is an exit route to the north side for the National Railway Museum.

I'd been to other Time Out Markets, in the US, and found them places which I had little desire to return to. Not this one, to which I returned at least 3 other times. It wasn't just the easy appeal of an amply-poured glass of great wine at an equally great price, but the whole vibe of the place, featuring the best of Portugal's best. Literally, everything looked appealing here; choosing what to eat to accompany that wine? That was my sole dilemma. One side of this place has eateries that feature really well-priced nightly specials, often selling out, which gives you an idea of their popularity. I frequently found myself in another stretch of the place, opting for a wonderfully fresh sushi platter that ran about $30US. If you do nothing more than come for food and drink you'll likely not notice that there's a really wonderful, artsy shop (A Vida Portuguesa) that features unique and beautiful gifts for yourself or others. Also, a bookstore upstairs and, during the daytime, a huge farmer's market/green-grocery in another space attached to the main hall, but easily overlooked. I highly recommend this Time Out Market, even suggesting you plan your stay to be in close proximity. That's how much I liked it.
