Midway between London's rail stations and Edinburgh's rail stations lies the York railway station. Building started in 1873 and was completed in 1877, when it was then the largest building in the world, it has been updated and modernized a number of times. There are 11 platforms, each of which is accessible either via an above ground pedestrian bridge or a below ground lift-served pedestrian subway. The station has many food and shopping options, including the usual selection of coffee shops and food vendors. The departure board is clear and easy to read. The taxi stand is under cover and is well marked. Bus stops are also right outside and easy enough to find. read more

York's railway station is famous - not only as a major stop on the East Coast railway line, but also for its architecture: the sharply curving overall roofs with their impressive glazing screens are the subject iconic photographs from the days of steam to the present. Although the railway reached York in 1839, the present station dates from a major rebuild by the North Eastern Railway in 1877. It was designed by Thomas Prosser and William Peachey in yellow stock brick with tone dressings, in a broadly classical Italianate style. It was further extended in 1909, but has been rationalised in recent years and now has 11 platforms, and the approach road and access has been improved. It handles over 6 million passengers a year - the busiest in Yorkshire after Leeds. The station is the junction of the lines to Scarborough and Leeds via Harrogate. As well as services on the London-Edinburgh line, it is also served by Cross-Country services from the South West and Midlands to the North East and Scotland, the Trans-Pennine services to Leeds, Manchester, Blackpool and Liverpool, and local services to Hull via Selby. There is also a coach link direct to Leeds-Bradford Airport. The station has all the facilities you'd expect of a major junction, including ample car parking (670 spaces), cycle storage for 446 bicycles, cycle hire, taxi rank, bus stops, a tourist information office, cafes, a bar, newsagents and cash-points. This is a beautiful old train station. It is huge and has so much to look at. It's also in a great location. It's close to the City Centre and to the National Railway Museum. There are so many different trains that come through this station everyday. It's cool just to see all of the trains! If you are traveling to York for a visit, you should definitely take the train. The staff at this station were very friendly and helpful. read more

Cool train station. If I were asked to describe a British train station, York would fit it perfectly with the open platform, metal overhang to block the rain, and brick building. It is easy to catch your train, Plenty of food options. Bathrooms are a little hard to locate, especially the men's bathroom. Normally it is located next to or around about the female bathroom. In this case, walk by the female's bathroom and keep walking about 20 feet and there it is. There is always someone to answer which platform to catch your next train and direct you. read more

This is a beautiful old train station, near the railway museum, and just outside the York city wall. It's a nice place in that it fits with the medieval surroundings without much modern design disturbance. Look above you and the details in the support beams pop out - painting and decorative metal work. I enjoyed this station best. Many of the stations were more modern and had more food and coffee stands, but York's has a lot of character. read more

So... a rail station, a bit of an odd thing to review, but a deserving one I imagine. Being from a part of the US that is generally devoid of any public rail station I still have a love for decent stations... to me York encompasses the near perfect station, not as disjointed or random as Edinburgh Waverley seems to be (sorry friends!) and not as busy as the reigning champ of stations that is the revised King's Cross... it's logically laid out, charming, and has just enough places for food or drink to occupy you during an early arrival or small change... special shout out to the York Tap, which deserves a separate review. To me one of the best things about the station is that it prepares you for York itself if you're a first time visitor... one view of the clear(ish) roof and old world clocks upon arrival sets the stage for what's to come... it's both open and closed, old and new, and all while retaining the previously mentioned charm. The only negative is the bathrooms... I suppose clean bathrooms aren't overly expected at a rail station, but I would be lying if I said that the state of them didn't let the rest of the station down a bit. Another slight issue is the odd drop off /taxi rank "loop" outside that causes chaos at busy times, but honestly that's about as much an introduction to York as anything else really. :) read more

As railway stations go, York is proud owner of a rather aesthetically pleasing one. It's always a pleasant experience to hop off the train, and have the romanticism of a journey become amplified by the curiosities around you. Of course, it's small and unremarkable beyond this really, but it's miles away from the potential death trap that, for example, Wakefield Kirkgate is. All the essentials lie therein, coffee for re-fueling, snacks for your voyage, and even a really very fabulous (and plush) new ale house. This fantastic pub sits right next to the stops, so you've plenty easy access for a last minute pint-and-dash to your next train. As with the city, the whole space has rather and olde-world feel, given the age of it-just so long as you can block out the modern imagery of chain brands and suchlike. Clean, fairly romantic and pleasant, and much nicer to hang around in than the likes of Leeds station. read more

A relatively large station for the northern England region, this railway junction allows for various connections as well as a final destination (yay, York!) to explore. The station is kept clean, is surprisingly non-crowded given the size of this place, and offers the expected assortment of snacks and knick-knacks you'll find in your standard stations. read more

Beautiful Station and well kept. Built on a curve and as you can see from the photos always something interesting to see. Well served as it is on the main East coast, London - Edinburgh line. Plenty of shops and snack bars, could do with a few more seats. read more

The further North the bigger and efficient the stations :-). York train station is massive. Over 11 platforms. The building reminds me of Harry Potter somehow, a mystic, intriguing stonebuild. There are overhead bridges connecting the platforms. Several coffee shops to choose from. Glad there was a Costa stand on platform 9 and I got my second hot drink of the day, a salted caramel latte. What a calorie bomb. For a small cup £2.85. Bit on the pricy side. Less coffee and more cream. Moving on, plenty of toilets, convenient shops and coffee places to choose from. Could not try out the waiting rooms nor the toilets, but I'm sure there are plenty. All trains today were delayed. York station had to switch platforms quickly. Announcements came quick. It is not a small station such best you leave yourself plenty of time to manoeuvre around. Have a coffee if needs be. read more

I apologise if this place is already in, but every time i tried to review i was taken to New York, so something needs to be corrected with the site i think. Several cold winters trying to get back to Stockton my train has been delayed at York, once for about four hours, because of snow in Scotland. You'd think the companies would be organised enough to have another train available, but no. I spent the time eating in the little pub at the front of the station and drinking too. I remember they had good beer and the food wasn't bad either. There was a little passenger lounge, but the station itself was freezing. It's a station that's much better during the day. Another time coming back from Manchester airport of all places we were delayed and I had to sleep over in York for a night, which was a bit odd. I managed to find a good hostel, I think called St Mary's, but that's another review. read more

One of the main rail stations on the East Coast Main Line, York has all the facilities you'd expect of a good train station. There are several shops and coffee kiosks available in the station both on the concourse and on some of the outer platforms. There is also a pub and cafe. There are always plenty of taxis waiting outside the front of the station and beyond the taxi rank the bus stops can take you to anywhere in and around York as well as there being a direct coach link to Leeds Bradford Airport (http://www.yorkaircoach.com) . It is also right next door to the National Railway Museum which is in keeping with Yorks reputation as the one of the centres of the birth of the global rail industry. read more

York railway station is architecturally interesting and beautiful. If you are a photographer, please be aware that you are required to tell them before you start shooting as they're likely to come over and give you a stern talking to. It is also very cold on most parts of this station at most times of the year so wrap up warm! York is on the East Coast Mainline and has good links to both north and south, with London and Edinburgh about 2-3 hours away. Services at the station include lots of space for bikes and a reasonably sized if overpriced long-stay car park (as per all stations). There are excellent bus links with the majority of bus routes in the city stopping outside or just round the corner. There is also a taxi rank, though at peak times, this struggles to meet demand and regular users will have spent many hours waiting in the cold. If you're dropping off or picking up, you can have 40 minutes for 50p. There are also two Costa Coffee shops along with two or three other coffee outlets and a WH Smiths. read more

I'm not really digging York railway station ... mostly because there are basically NO options here for food. Well ok there's one, and it's seriously expensive. For such a major station between Edinburgh and London (and considering people get stuck there travelling between the two on a regular basis) you would think there would be a few more food options, more seats, or even *gasp* indoor seating that isn't the pub. read more

A major station on the East Coast Main Line, with connections to all points on the compass. One of the most important things for a station this size is clear signage: you need to know in plenty of time where your train is going from as it's likely to be quite a walk to get there. Happily York scores well in this regard with several big displays strategically around the station. There's a well-maintained waiting-room and even the gents' loos were in good order last time I used them (obviously I can only comment on half the loos available). There's a busy taxi rank which I've sometimes had to queue at. All in all, a good example of its type. read more

Not enough suitable transport from York to Selby they can only recommend other stations meaning late travel is impossible due to some buses closing their services to Selby I tried and tried but every single time I'm too late their only response is to recommend other stations. On the odd occasion when they decide that they want to let people travel to Selby it's within their guidelines not ours leaving people like me unsure as to where to go to get home. read more
