    Looking up!
    Graham S.

I like the open feel of York train station. Even a pub that opens out onto the platform.

Cool train station. If I were asked to describe a British train station, York would fit it perfectly with the open platform, metal overhang to block the rain, and brick building. It is easy to catch your train, Plenty of food options. Bathrooms are a little hard to locate, especially the men's bathroom. Normally it is located next to or around about the female bathroom. In this case, walk by the female's bathroom and keep walking about 20 feet and there it is. There is always someone to answer which platform to catch your next train and direct you.

A relatively large station for the northern England region, this railway junction allows for various connections as well as a final destination (yay, York!) to explore. The station is kept clean, is surprisingly non-crowded given the size of this place, and offers the expected assortment of snacks and knick-knacks you'll find in your standard stations.

Beautiful Station and well kept. Built on a curve and as you can see from the photos always something interesting to see. Well served as it is on the main East coast, London - Edinburgh line. Plenty of shops and snack bars, could do with a few more seats.

Not many food options. Easy access to the railway museum and to leeds. Platform numbers a little confusing.

There is also a taxi rank, though at peak times, this struggles to meet demand and regular users will have spent many hours waiting in the cold.

The station was formerly known as Estação Central (Central Station) and the name still appears in its façade. Opened in 1891 to designs by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro, the main facade at street level is a wonderful example of Neo-Manueline architecture, named after the heavily decorative hybrid classical-gothic architecture unique to Portugal. It's sinuous curves and entrance arches are reminiscent of Art Nouveau. Once inside, a modern escalator takes you up to the spacious train shed. There's a ticket office, ticket machines and cafe. Trains to Sintra leave every 20 minutes on weekdays (every 10 minutes at rush hour), and half hourly at weekends.

I had walked inside to look at the gift shop on the left and saw the Starbucks on the right, but never saw any indication of a train station there, either. Once I KNEW that it was the train station, I looked harder for a sign, and it was up the elevator from the front of the building. Tickets are at the top of the double elevator and should have been easy to get, but I had to try 3 different machines to get it to work. The machine will encourage you to get a round trip, and know that the round trip ticket is all on one ticket. You won't be issued 2 tickets. The ticket is needed to get in and out of the stations, so make sure to hang onto it until after you've left your final destination. The place is super clean...one of the cleanest train stations I have been in. I wanted this review out here in case someone needed it. I hope it helps folks to avoid the couple of hiccups I had there.

We took the Lisbon-Sintra train line & followed the crowds walking:10 to the historic center of town. There were buses, taxis and Tuktuks picking up passengers. We passed art on display & crafts people selling their wares. The station's main building dates from 1887. But it's worth going inside the station, as it's beautifully covered in tiles and includes a tourist office. It also has a ticket office and a ticket machine. We accessed the train platforms can also be done through the station.

During regular hours, there should be a departure every half hour or so and the train to Lisbon takes about 40 minutes. There are a couple vending machines here. Sintra is very much a tourism destination so you can expect taxis and tuk tuks waiting when you arrive. Or just walk and wing it like I did. The station has an automated ticket kiosk and terminal but hopefully, you bought a round trip when you left Lisbon so you don't have to deal with that. For my departure, I scanned my Viagem card, read the departure board and get on my train in less than a minute. Note that the exit in Rossio is from the front so you'll want to move towards a forward car if you have time here. [Review 16655 overall - 167 in Portugal - 167 of 2022.]

There are multiple tracks and you might need to ask someone which is the next train to depart. Or you can just follow everyone who is boarding one or the other. If you miss it, there's another in 30 minutes (off peak) or 12 minutes (peak). But before that, you will need to purchase a ticket to scan at the turnstile. The machine has an "English" button and accepts cards, notes and coins. One-way fare is €2,30 and you should expect a conductor on board checking tickets. It is easy to find your way to the bus stop from here as there are signs and a tunnel. The 403 bus stops here for the ride to Cabo da Roca. Head out and to the left, stay on the sidewalk and follow the coastline to the Cidadela de Cascais or the Farol de Santa Marta. Beyond those, it is a 1.5 km walk to the Boca do Inferno but it's mostly smooth and handicapped accessible. Or you can wait for the M27 bus that goes the long way. The station has some snack shops and quick restaurants but you're also right into downtown, so there is much more nearby including all the tourist shops you can imagine.
