Midway between London's rail stations and Edinburgh's rail stations lies the York railway station…read more Building started in 1873 and was completed in 1877, when it was then the largest building in the world, it has been updated and modernized a number of times. There are 11 platforms, each of which is accessible either via an above ground pedestrian bridge or a below ground lift-served pedestrian subway. The station has many food and shopping options, including the usual selection of coffee shops and food vendors. The departure board is clear and easy to read. The taxi stand is under cover and is well marked. Bus stops are also right outside and easy enough to find.

Although the railway reached York in 1839, the present station dates from a major rebuild by the North Eastern Railway in 1877. It was designed by Thomas Prosser and William Peachey in yellow stock brick with tone dressings, in a broadly classical Italianate style. It was further extended in 1909, but has been rationalised in recent years and now has 11 platforms, and the approach road and access has been improved. It handles over 6 million passengers a year - the busiest in Yorkshire after Leeds. The station is the junction of the lines to Scarborough and Leeds via Harrogate. As well as services on the London-Edinburgh line, it is also served by Cross-Country services from the South West and Midlands to the North East and Scotland, the Trans-Pennine services to Leeds, Manchester, Blackpool and Liverpool, and local services to Hull via Selby. There is also a coach link direct to Leeds-Bradford Airport. The station has all the facilities you'd expect of a major junction, including ample car parking (670 spaces), cycle storage for 446 bicycles, cycle hire, taxi rank, bus stops, a tourist information office, cafes, a bar, newsagents and cash-points. The station has level access, although some of the lifts require station staff assistance. There is an exit route to the north side for the National Railway Museum.

We took the Lisbon-Sintra train line & followed the crowds walking:10 to the historic center of town. There were buses, taxis and Tuktuks picking up passengers. We passed art on display & crafts people selling their wares. The station's main building dates from 1887. But it's worth going inside the station, as it's beautifully covered in tiles and includes a tourist office. It also has a ticket office and a ticket machine. We accessed the train platforms can also be done through the station.

During regular hours, there should be a departure every half hour or so and the train to Lisbon takes about 40 minutes. There are a couple vending machines here. Sintra is very much a tourism destination so you can expect taxis and tuk tuks waiting when you arrive. Or just walk and wing it like I did. The station has an automated ticket kiosk and terminal but hopefully, you bought a round trip when you left Lisbon so you don't have to deal with that. For my departure, I scanned my Viagem card, read the departure board and get on my train in less than a minute. Note that the exit in Rossio is from the front so you'll want to move towards a forward car if you have time here. [Review 16655 overall - 167 in Portugal - 167 of 2022.]

There are multiple tracks and you might need to ask someone which is the next train to depart. Or you can just follow everyone who is boarding one or the other. The machine has an "English" button and accepts cards, notes and coins. One-way fare is €2,30 and you should expect a conductor on board checking tickets. It takes about 40 minutes from one end to the other, and trains come pretty regularly. During rush hour some trains may not stop at all stations.

The station was formerly known as Estação Central (Central Station) and the name still appears in its façade. Opened in 1891 to designs by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro, the main facade at street level is a wonderful example of Neo-Manueline architecture, named after the heavily decorative hybrid classical-gothic architecture unique to Portugal. It's sinuous curves and entrance arches are reminiscent of Art Nouveau. Once inside, a modern escalator takes you up to the spacious train shed. There's a ticket office, ticket machines and cafe. I had walked inside to look at the gift shop on the left and saw the Starbucks on the right, but never saw any indication of a train station there, either. Once I KNEW that it was the train station, I looked harder for a sign, and it was up the elevator from the front of the building. Tickets are at the top of the double elevator and should have been easy to get, but I had to try 3 different machines to get it to work. The machine will encourage you to get a round trip, and know that the round trip ticket is all on one ticket. You won't be issued 2 tickets. The ticket is needed to get in and out of the stations, so make sure to hang onto it until after you've left your final destination. The place is super clean...one of the cleanest train stations I have been in. I wanted this review out here in case someone needed it. I hope it helps folks to avoid the couple of hiccups I had there.
