The station was formerly known as Estação Central (Central Station) and the name still appears in its façade. Opened in 1891 to designs by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro, the main facade at street level is a wonderful example of Neo-Manueline architecture, named after the heavily decorative hybrid classical-gothic architecture unique to Portugal. It's sinuous curves and entrance arches are reminiscent of Art Nouveau. Once inside, a modern escalator takes you up to the spacious train shed. There's a ticket office, ticket machines and cafe. Trains to Sintra leave every 20 minutes on weekdays (every 10 minutes at rush hour), and half hourly at weekends.

I had walked inside to look at the gift shop on the left and saw the Starbucks on the right, but never saw any indication of a train station there, either. Once I KNEW that it was the train station, I looked harder for a sign, and it was up the elevator from the front of the building. Tickets are at the top of the double elevator and should have been easy to get, but I had to try 3 different machines to get it to work. The machine will encourage you to get a round trip, and know that the round trip ticket is all on one ticket. You won't be issued 2 tickets. The ticket is needed to get in and out of the stations, so make sure to hang onto it until after you've left your final destination. The place is super clean...one of the cleanest train stations I have been in. I wanted this review out here in case someone needed it. I hope it helps folks to avoid the couple of hiccups I had there.

The station is handicapped accessible with escalators and elevators between the street level and the platform level. The station has two tracks that go through the center and therefore, there are two side platforms. There is step-free access and free transfer between the two platforms. If there is a below-ground transfer to the Estação do Rossio for regional trains, I couldn't find it. Upstairs to the street, walk across the plaza, into the station. Platforms are clean and there is a sign indicating how long until the next train is due to arrive. Rossio is between Martim Moniz (toward Telheiras) and Baixa-Chiado (toward Cais do Sodré). It is an underground station and while there are plenty of stairs, there are also lifts between the platform level and the ticketing mezzanine and between the mezzanine and street level. The station opened in 1959 as part of the original Lisbon metro and has since been expanded and retrofitted a couple of times. Today, the platforms appear quite modern and clean. There are many restaurants and hotels in the Praça dos Restauradores. The obelisk in the plaza is a monument that commemorates the end of the Iberian Union in 1640 and the independence of Portugal from Spain. At the ticketing level, you'll find the usual automated ticket vending machines and turnstiles. This is one of the busier stations on the network as it is close to some of the main tourist areas and plazas. Keep an eye on your wallet and other valuables. All the stairs helped give me a good workout but there's also escalators if you have mobility challenges. I liked that the entry/ exit to a public parking garage was also co-located with the metro station. I loved the large tile mural on the walls of the station, which paid homage to the World's major metropolitan cities in a Kandinsky-esque style. With only two platforms, there are 3 city mural dedicated to them per platform. After a LOT of googling, I think have discovered that the artist of these murals might be a Portuguese artist by the name of Nadir Afonso, and his style of art is geometric abstraction. Since we have been to Lisbon, Portugal many times, we decided to take a local train to Cascais. What a beautiful city. Ambiance - Local train, not good or bad. Not busy. Not clean, but also not dirty. On time. Service - Had a hard time trying to buy our tickets as the machines were NOT in English. And struggled using Google Translate while underground. The people around us were too busy to help us. Finally, we went to the cafe to ask for help. The owner sold us a one day pass rather than a round trip pass... Since we had the more expensive pass (double the price rather than round trip tickets) we decided to make an extra stop at Belem to get our $$ worth. Then when we got back, we found these two tourist girls also struggling to buy their train tickets, so we gave them ours as we were trying to pay it forward. Glad the tickets can get more use. I do not think they were trying to rip us off, but there was a language barrier. We appreciated the help. Price - Bought a one day pass. I think we paid approximately $8 US for each ticket. On the green line, the next station is Baixa-Chiado towards Telheiras. The metro station is completely handicapped accessible with lifts and escalators between the street level and platform level. There are automated ticket vending machines for the metro. I was here to catch the ferry, which of course is at street level. Separate vending machines for ferry tickets and a clear display indicating not only how long until the next ferry departs, the gate (there are three gates) and what percentage full. Purchasing the ferry ticket was easy (only €1.80 including the €0.50 for a new Viagem card) and quick. I was able to buy my ticket at 16:35, scan it and still board the 16:40 ferry to Cacilhas. Hands down the best way to travel from one part of town to the other. The hills in Lisbon are no…read morejoke and it's easy to end up on a street that you think will take you up to your next destination and ends up taking you to other random side streets. We were at La Catedral de Estrela and wanted to head into town to go to St Jorge Castle and there was no way we were going to miss the best chance to get on Tram 28! If you're in Estrela, the tram runs every 15 minutes or so and picks you up right across from the Park or the Cathedral. Really easy! We didn't pay for the 24 hour pass because we didn't know what our plan was going to be for the day. But you can buy it at any metro station for €6 and it makes life easy for you so you can essentially turn the tram into your own " hop off, hop on" tour. We paid the single use €2.90/person fee and enjoyed the 15-20 minute ride up the castle. I would recommend opening the windows so you can get some great fresh air and pictures of all the sites you pass. If you catch the tram in Estrela or well before the heart of town you are almost guaranteed a seat, rather than having to stand awkwardly as the tram jolts you around. We also lucked out that December isn't really peak season for tourism here anyways.

We hopped onboard the third tram that came around as they have limited seating- about 20 seats. You can stand though. The ride was about 30 minutes and ended around Chiado. It was a nice ride, but I don't feel as if it's a must.
