Eléctrico 28 - Terminal Stop for Tram 28

Hands down the best way to travel from one part of town to the other. The hills in Lisbon are no…read morejoke and it's easy to end up on a street that you think will take you up to your next destination and ends up taking you to other random side streets. We were at La Catedral de Estrela and wanted to head into town to go to St Jorge Castle and there was no way we were going to miss the best chance to get on Tram 28! If you're in Estrela, the tram runs every 15 minutes or so and picks you up right across from the Park or the Cathedral. Really easy! We didn't pay for the 24 hour pass because we didn't know what our plan was going to be for the day. But you can buy it at any metro station for €6 and it makes life easy for you so you can essentially turn the tram into your own " hop off, hop on" tour. We paid the single use €2.90/person fee and enjoyed the 15-20 minute ride up the castle. I would recommend opening the windows so you can get some great fresh air and pictures of all the sites you pass. If you catch the tram in Estrela or well before the heart of town you are almost guaranteed a seat, rather than having to stand awkwardly as the tram jolts you around. We also lucked out that December isn't really peak season for tourism here anyways.

After arriving at the Martim Moniz Square in the morning, I looked for a long line to figure out…read morewhere the tram starts. The wait wasn't too bad- less than 30 minutes. We hopped onboard the third tram that came around as they have limited seating- about 20 seats. You can stand though. The ride was about 30 minutes and ended around Chiado. It was a nice ride, but I don't feel as if it's a must.

Elevador da Bica - If you are not up for walking the steep streets, the tram is an option. 12.28.24

The tram ride from one end to the other takes 2:40 and climbs one of the steepest slopes in the city. It opened for passengers in 1892. What's interesting about this ride is that it is not an independent track. The path where the train rides is also open to vehicles and pedestrians. It is considered one of the most picturesque streets in Lisbon, if not Europe. The Elevador is operated by the same Carris that runs the subway, trams and buses. If you've bought a 24 hour pass, you can scan your Viagem card and it's included. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a ticket from the driver onboard - he takes cash. Try to sit in the front or the back for the best views! [Review 19025 overall - 221 in Portugal - 2549 of 2022.]

If you do plan to go to the market, I'd recommend combining the two in one trip since the elevador is not that close to the city centre. The yellow funicular is the most popular one in Lisbon because of the steep hills. Unfortunately, it wasn't running when we came by on a Saturday at around 2:30. Maybe it only runs on weekdays? Regardless of that fact, it's a cool place for some photo ops. This is where you see all of those Lisbon shots on Instagram. We didn't walk up the entire hill but it was a sight to see. We didn't have time to come back another day to see if the tram was running since our time in Lisbon was limited, but if this is a must-see for you, just be sure to budget enough time on your trip. You never know when it may be randomly closed.

You should get the bus since the metro would be downtown and then back out. I was here by metro and found the station easy enough to navigate. There is a confusion layer because two metro lines meet here. Despite being a relatively new station - it opened in 1993 - it is not handicapped accessible from street level, but there are lifts for cross-platform transfers. The station is surrounded by mostly apartment buildings but the Pimenta Palace branch of the Museu de Lisboa is within walking distance. It is also the closest station to the massive Estádio José Alvalade where Sporting Clube de Portugal plays their matches. On the Linha Amarela (Yellow line), it is between Quinta das Conchas (towards Odivelas) and Cidade Universitária (towards Rato). On the Linha Verde (Green line), it is between Telheiras (the end of the line) and Alvalade (towards Cais do Sodré). There are the usual automated ticket vending machines and turnstiles here. The station did have a person in the ticketing booth which has been unusual during my time in Lisbon - most stations didn't have attendants. [Review 19056 overall - 249 in Portugal - 25 of 2023.]

However, as with most of our experience around the city, anyone we had to ask help from was quite pleasant and willing to help. The station was relatively clean & easy to navigate. With only two lines, and being towards the end of them, it wasn't too hard to figure out which way we had to go to get down into the heart of the city.
