King Salmon as advertised on Tanners website

November 9, 2025 It has taken me some time to write this review of Tanner's Alaskan Seafood. I ordered Salmon Roe, Alaskan Venison Sausage, Alaskan Smoked Halibut, Smoked Jalapeno Salmon Spread, Alaskan Smoked King Salmon Traditional Flavor, King Salmon Bellies, and Alaskan Sockeye Salmon Premium Portions. I will describe the products in the order we tried them. We tried the first five items the first week we received the package. The last two we tried yesterday and today. After trying the first five, I lost interest in trying more but yesterday I thought I would try brining the roe. 1. Smoked Halibut. Awful. They overly brined the halibut and did not smoke the fish. I took one bit and spit it out. No smoke flavor. It was mushy and salty beyond belief. Opened another package same problem. All went in the trash. 2. Smoked King Salmon. Very little smoked flavor or salmon flavor. There are several things that can cause that. 3. Smoked salmon spread. Impossible to tell exactly what it was. Did not taste like salmon and had just the slightest smoke flavor. Went in the trash. 4. Sockeye Portions. Average quality. We fried those okay. 5. Venison sausage. Tasted like the cheap sausage you can find in any convenience store or truck stop. It was impossible to tell what it was by taste. Went in the trash. 6. Salmon roe. Opened the package and the eggs were very small and all were very mushy. I brined the roe but it was impossible to remove the eggs from the skein (the membrane that holds the eggs) because it was all mush. Went in the trash. I still have one bag of roe left. 7. King Salmon Bellies. All bellies had fins attached. It is a common and accepted practice to remove the fin when the fish is filleted. There was a total of 9 pieces in the last package. The pieces I received were small. Below is a picture of pieces in the last package we had left which had not been fried. I put a tape beside the pieces to show how much meat we actually received. You can fry the bellies and remove the fin easier after they are fried. They tasted great. My point with the salmon bellies is that what I received is nothing as Tanner advertises in their picture below of salmon bellies (on their website). I spent around $500 for the product. I lived in Alaska for 18 years. I went all over the state fishing and many times fished various places on the Kenai Peninsula, which is where Tanner Seafood is located. I had a 206 on floats used it a great deal fishing in the 12 years I owned it. I bought seafood from other business in Alaska. I know what good quality seafood is and this from Tanners was the worst I have experienced from any Seafood business in Alaska. I suppose the risk of buying online and receiving what I received is more common these days because what recourse does anyone have except write a review; especially when you live 2000 miles from the seller. Notice on their website, they have positive reviews but go Yelp and you will read many more negative reviews.

    Tanner's Whole King Salmon Fillet

I continue to try to post an honest review on Tannersfish.com, but it keeps getting deleted. Seems they are only keeping 5-star reviews on that web site. I ordered whole King Salmon fillets from Tanners, to be shipped to my home. The fillets were plenty big and thick, but the salmon tasted bland, not like fresh King Salmon that I have cooked my entire life. The flesh was very lean, and did not contain the lines of marbled fat shown in the picture on their web site (and like all other quality King Salmon I have purchased from other sources). The fillets I received were just big, lean Salmon, with little fat and almost no taste. If I'm going to spend this much, I'd rather buy the highly marbled King Salmon that always cooks up moist and full of flavor.

Betty Jean and the crew at Tanner's are amazing! I've used Tanner's for several years and they are consistently top notch and always providing exceptional service! Thanks Betty Jean and I look forward to seeing you on my next AK trip!

    Yellowfin tuna

Fantastic! Ordered crab, halibut and king collars last time, all were excellent! Received my order this week, the tuna and king collars did not disappoint.

Coho Salmon with Creamed carrots, peas and turnips. Delicious!

For 3 years, I have been ordering my seafood from the Tanner family. Every product has been fresh and impeccably packaged. Delivered on time, every time. This retired Minnesota farmer appreciates this fantastic Alaskan goodness!

I bought 8 lbs of coho salmon. The fish is very tasty but a bit mushy when defrosted.

All the boxes my friend and I shipped home using this business arrived in a timely manner and tracking was available. They also offer a limited selection of seafood related food items for sale. This is NOT a restaurant...it is a seafood shipping facility (as least it was when I visited Alaska in summer 2007). I do not recall if they sold seafood shipping boxes because we bought our own from hardware stores in Homer and Soldotna.

We had done the checked boxes, and found it very much of a hassle. Nothing like 8 guys trying to lug 3 ea boxes of fish into Anchorage airport, with all of our other gear. Not only that, the cost of checked baggage has gone through the roof! After being referred to Paul, I gave him a ring, and he insured me he had a good solution. I had hear good things about him and his company, so I went for it! We came into Homer spit marina in the 70ft. Venturess, with 1600 # of Halibut, Ling cod, and rock fish. Paul had 3 trucks and 8 guys waiting. They took our fish 20min up the road and the next day it was professionally bagged in 5mil bags, 1#ea. perfect sized, separated and ready to ship. Now, we did not want to check it as I said before. Paul had it delivered to Alaska Air Cargo 2 days after we got back to the LA area. He arrange all of the details, it was hassle free! We got a tracking #, and the flight arrived at LAX, we drove one of our trucks to Alaska Cargo, picked it up, and we we amazed at how easy it was! In 2010, you can bet we will be using Paul and Anchor Point Seafood to take the hassle out of our annual long range Alaska fishing Adventure! Don't forget to ask him about the cookies... yummmm!! I got an additional pound of king salmon, halibut, Coon shrimp (a native type!) and a few jars of salmon caviar eggs! I already had the caviar eggs with my breakfast and simply wow. So fresh. So, my neighbour has been nagging me for some time now to call in to "that place with the railcars"…read morejust outside of Soldotna, but I'd not yet been. Though she hadn't mentioned there was a restaurant, she raved about the coffee shop and waffles. So my friend and I were coming to Soldotna last weekend, and me, as usual, am frantically searching Yelp for something with 4/5 stars. Addie Camp came up as a contender, with a solid 4.7 stars, but I hadn't realised it was where the railroad cars are. So we decided to give it a go. What a beautiful area it is, once you get up into the parking lot! It's very neat and tidy, and all the little railroad cars surround the central parking lot. And there's really massive solar panels to the rear. I liked that. There was not a scrap of trash anywhere. Very inviting. So we head into Addie Camp, and I'm wowed. It's beautiful inside, cosy and welcoming, yet very modern. The staff are lovely. The hostess asked if we had a reservation, but as we didn't she invited us to sit at the bar. No problem! They have tables upstairs, and in a railroad car to the side. It's absolutely beautiful, and features a lot of warm wood, but not old wood, very light modern wood. I tell you, I'm in love with this place. Anyway so we sit at the bar, where Sam was mixing cocktails. Sam is very pleasing on the eye, I might add. He was using Fevertree Tonic in one of the cocktails, and I told him that Fevertree's Elderflower Tonic is one of my fave drinks ever, and he said he loved it too. Anyway, so upon perusing the menu - it's not a huge menu, but there are plenty of things I'll eat - I ordered the Gold Star Elk Burger with rosemary fries, and my friend got Gambas Al Ajillo (Spanish style wild Patagonia Shrimp in a spicy olive and herb citrus sauce served with fancy bread) and we both opted for a Train Track Tonic Mocktail, mainly because Sam the bartender told me he had elderflower syrup, and it was featured in one of the mocktails, so I was sold. The napkins are fabric, and the silverware is fancy, heavy, not your usual restaurant fare. I was quite impressed with how quickly we were served, because it was quite busy. The food itself was outstanding. The bacon jam in this burger is EPIC and it's not your usual tiny bacon crumbles, it had chunky bits of bacon, and was sweetly gooey, but savoury too, absolutely the best bacon jam I've had, and it just gave the already amazing burger a boost it didn't even really need. There's no way to eat this burger in a dainty ladylike fashion, it's a beast, and the bacon jam is messy, but I went with it, and Sam got us some extra napkins. About 3/4 of the way through, I had to go knife and fork on the burger. I wasn't leaving any of that thing. The fries were good, the burger good, the mocktail good, excellent service, very attentive. This is unquestionably THE best restaurant on the Kenai Peninsula, and I can't wait to come back with my husband, next time we're down there. And, I did see regulars come in and be treated like they were old friends. After my experience there, I can see why people would keep coming back, it's THAT good!
