This has been a favorite of mine in the past and would normally have gotten five stars. However, this visit was quite different. The short little guy behind the deli counter was rude, abrupt, unpleasant, disrespectful, and generally unfriendly. This is 180 out from my previous experiences. The above was written by a customer a bit ago and I am reiterating it, this just happened to me today and is so unacceptable. I will not be returning to this place. Horrible customer service, I never need to be reprimanded by a, what seems to be super unhappy, deli guy. I asked to speak to a manager and the guy at the other counter said he was a manager, however, didn't really seem to care about what I had just experienced. I thought of this place all year since we last ate here. Felt it was like striking Gold with the yummy food if you don't mind the lack of customer service. They make it clear that anyone can start a business, but not many people realize it's the customers satisfaction that keeps you IN business. They make you feel like you are in an episode of Seinfeld with the Soup guy. You better know what you want before you walk in or decide ASAP. They have no patience for anyone who is not a local. Which is unfortunate, because I would recommend this place to over 100 tourists every summer! Fritz Creek WAS a must do every time we visit Homer! Given the cancellation of tourism this summer due to COVID, we decide to explore Alaska playing tourists in our own state during our amazing summer without the crowds. So as a group of 10 of us we are making a point of going as far North as Fairbanks and as South as Homer making sure we eat out and buy things to really help support our struggling small local businesses during this economic depression they are facing due to COVID. This is dispute the fact that Homer was in the midst in being the largest hotspot for COVID in the Kenai Peninsula. Out of consideration for other we made sure to mask up before we entered. We even expected the staff to be grouchy & short and we were ready to quickly give our order. They snapped at us for 3 of us being in the store at one time to pay for our food. Even though one of us was a child. We forgot to order a sandwich for my son (13) so we went back and ordered again and had him wait for it. He has a phone and realized that after 15 mins he better just check in with them on his order in case he missed the announcement it was ready. When he asked they made him feel bad and snapped at him that basically said " Yeah, yeah!" and "It's coming Dude!" Again, given we are in the midst of an epidemic and no one is allowed to eat inside at the two table they have and the only table outside was already being used, we decided to eat in our camper. However, it was a beautiful hot sunny day so why be inside, when we could eat with a gorgeous view of our home state of Alaska. So we pulled out a few camping chairs and a foldable table and ate and waiting for my son to get his food to join us. Just as we were finishing up, our kid pointed out there was someone standing behind us with his arms crossed just staring us down. My husband turned around and the guy says rudely & in a pissed off tone "Who gave you permission to camp here?!!" My husband said "First, of we are NOT CAMPING HERE. Second of all, given the COVID mandate of not eating inside a establishment and seeing your only table outside was occupied, we wanted to eat before we hit the road for the long drive home and also keep safe social distancing, and given the limited parking area for our truck and pull behind trailer, we decided to stay out of the way and not block anything or one." He then said "so you decided to park on my lawn?!!" My husband says we "made sure to not put a wheel on your lawn, if that's what you call this, but it looks more like a dirt pile with a bunch of weeds and rocks than a grassy mound. He said he has been trying to work on it! He then told us "it would have been nice if you would have asked permission to park here!" My husband asked him if he was the owner of the store. He responded that he was in fact the owner. My husband responded that given the COVID mandates, the outside table being occupied, compounded with the fact that we just spent a lot of money in the store close to over a $100, we figured no one would mind." He then said again, it just would have been nice to ask his permission. My husband responded he "was not surprised he was the owner and as he and his employees also treated us to so rudely & poorly when we were just trying to support local businesses and figured they would appreciate it." Everywhere else from Fairbanks to Homer and everywhere in between, businesses have been so kind and appreciate our business. Given the fact that EVERY TIME we stop by this business they are rude, the food is way over priced, and it is clear they only like locals. We will say the bread used for sandwiches is super yummy perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. However, the sandwiches are basic. Save your time & has to drive there only to get snapped at, money spent for the over priced Subway sandwiches, being treated as someone who has the plague and is not welcome, and GO TO SUBWAY INSTEAD!! read more

When I stay out in the Fritz Creek area, and even when I don't, the General Store is my go-to place for delicious soup (yesterday, Indian lamb vegetable with buttered French bread), pizzas, sandwiches (veggie, pulled pork, beef brisket) and pastries and baked goods (eg peanut butter pie, chocolate and cream cheese muffin, lemon poppyseed muffin, rasp merry cheesecake, chocolate eclair, lemon bar). The kitchen and behind the register staff where I place my orders are great. Lots of choices in the coolers for drinks. A perfect place to load up, stock up, pic k up wrapped food items for a boat/hiking/driving trip. read more

TERRIBLE KITCHEN HELP - the food is amazing, no complaints there. but some of the kitchen help can be really rude. I just called to ask about pizza and the guy just said to look online, that he didn't have time to talk to me. I had one question. They don't have a web page so it isn't easy to find the menu on line. by the time I found the info I wanted so that I could order and called back, he would not take my order because he said the kitchen was closing at 6.. it was 5:15 when I called, if he would have given me one min to talk the first time I called I could have ordered then. I often get sandwiches there to because they are the best in town. I put up with the attitude because I love the food, but it would be nice if they could get servers that didn't make you feel like you were waisting their time by ordering. read more

You do not need to be told to sit in one of the uncomfortable wooden chairs and pet the cat and pass the time and weather with the locals while you wait for said sandwich. Because you are not waiting for a flight. You are not waiting for Industrial Halibut Center #43 to finish with your catch. You are not interested in buying earrings made of moose nuggets. In fact, you do not have Internet access at this moment and are probably not checking Yelp to figure out what the deal with this so-called "Fritz Creek General Store" is. We were becoming discouraged on locating reasonably priced and great tasting food while in Alaska. After listening to a YouTube recommendation from Semiserious Chefs on places to eat in Homer, we feel we've hit the jackpot! This quaint little general store hit the spot! The three of us ordered the Smoked Brisket sandwich, Pulled Pork sandwich and a large 3-topping pizza (pepperoni, sliced jalapeño peppers and roasted red peppers. This Country gas station ,Bakery ,store and post office is simply the best place to visit and meet friendly people , from the staff to the customers , they all start chatting with you like you're family from the first time you meet them ! There's a million stories from all walks of life flowing through it's doors about how they came to Alaska , where they are from and about growing up here ! A stone throw away from the "Kilcher Homestead" who on occasion stop in and chat with you! Will miss this place untill we come back in a few months , it truly is unique and you have to go there for the daily pastries and Brisket sandwich , wow oh ya and the soups! My kids & I drove up East End Rd & on the way back, stopped at Fritz Creek General Store to get something to eat. I had the brisket sandwich. It's as good as they say it is. My daughter had a turkey sandwich, my son had the Italian. My daughter & I shared a soup. It was good, but I especially loved the bread. It was delicious. You might come here only to buy gas or a loaf of bread but if that's all you do, you're missing out on some of the finest soups, sandwiches and desserts in Alaska.
