SCAMMERS!! Go anywhere else! My van was shifting hard at the end of December. So I took it in for a free check. When I showed up I was told the "Free check" is actually $250. Which I could use this cost towards any repairs I may need. They told me that my transmission needed repairing. Which will take 3-4 business days. So I rented a car for those days. Those days turned into 4 weeks now! The owner is horrible at communicating. I had to call him every other day for the update on my van. Each time being told, just a couple more days. read more

We need our son's transmission done. We were on a time crunch. They worked us in and our son's car is good as new.

Very frustrating place to deal with. My young son took his truck in to get an estimate and not only was the estimate ridiculous but they completed the work without anyone's approval. We have called several times and are not getting our calls returned. I have had the estimate looked at by other repair shops and am being told it's at least double what it should be. Truck is still sitting there and no one is communicating with us. I will never use this shop again. Hard lesson for a 19 year old trying to be an adult and take care of this himself. I took my truck in for a diagnostic on the transmission, a couple of hours later they told me that I needed to pay $603 for them to start to try to figure out what was wrong. They claimed that my transmission fluid was black and burned horribly, which it was not, and they claimed that the code that came up was for the torque converter, but the code was actually for the trans pressure sensor. They also claimed that they couldn't remove one of the bolts out of the trans pan, I guess they forgot the old saying "lefty loosy righty tighty"... Just because I am a woman doesn't mean that I don't know mechanics, they underestimated the wrong person. Don't go to Tanner. read more

Had a transmission redone. Went in to talk to them about fixing a small leak around the drain plug. While we were talking another employee overheard our conversation, checked on it and reported it was the o ring around the plug and would not cause any damage. Knowing the information about the o ring. The manager told me if I did not leave my vehicle with them right then It would void my warranty. I told him I could not, it was in the middle of a work day. He read me all the reasons that would void my warranty. From what he read me the warranty is basically worthless. They can void it for almost anything. Including not having your paper work. I told him this was crazy and not reasonable. He got right in my face, nose to nose and asked what I was going to do about it. I left and worked it out with the Owner. I have never been physical threaten when trying to resolve a concern. read more

Do not give this shop your business!!! Broke down from out of state at night. They did diagnose the problem as the 4x4 transfer case. That was the only good thing to happen. Long story short; after agreeing with the manager (at the time he stated he was not the manager) on a price to fix in which he stated 3 times I would not be charged more than his quote I agreed and left for out of state. Days later he calls and says cost has risen over $850.00? Yea, they got me, what was I going to do other than have them try and fix it. Read all the other NEGATIVE REVIEWS AND DON'T SHOP THIS BUISNESS! HONESTY IS NOT ONE OF THEIR BETTER BUISNESS TRAITS! read more

*update* 8/14. The president of Tanner commented on this post but I still haven't heard anything. He made it sound like there were multiple things wrong with my car. I wouldn't know. No one has communicated with me to let me know there's other things wrong? I just got off the phone with them and my transmission is in but they ordered the wrong part for something else. So now they again don't know how long it will be. *update* 8/8 I called in and was basically told "quit calling us. We will call you." It's hard to do that when you need your car back to get to work! They still seem to have no idea what is going on with my car and told me again that they are working on it and will let me know. Now when I ask them when can I have it back, they tell me "a few days". Does it seem like it's been just "a few days" to you? I've had to borrow a car all summer! *update* 8/7 I was supposed to hear from tanner today. I didn't call and neither did they. I have been without a car for way too long. *update* 8/6 no one called me on Saturday to tell me if it was done or not. I called today and they said that they were finishing up installing the transmission and were going to drive it around and then call me. I still haven't heard anything from them today. The manager did tell me that he was annoyed that he wasn't able to go grab his lunch because I called *update* after 8 hours yesterday 8/2 I was told I could have my car on 8/3. Of course no one called me on 8/3 so I called them. My car is still not done. But they said I could have it on 8/4. We wi I wish I could give 0 stars. The lack of customer service that Tanner has is shocking. I bought my car a year ago and have only driven it 3k miles because it has been broken down for most of that time. I brought my car in because the transmission light came on and my car wouldn't shift. They told me I needed a rebuilt transmission so I took out a loan and paid nearly 3900.00 for it. When I got it back it ran for a few days and did the same thing. I took the car back and they had my car for almost 3 months trying to diagnose it and fix it. They finally fixed it and when I got it back the check engine light came back on. I took it to another shop to have the engine looked at and they told me that whomever fixed it last did not unhook the battery from the car before taking out the transmission and it fried my internal computer. So I took another 3k loan out and fixed that. When I got the car back from the other shop the exact same thing happened with my transmission. The light is on and won't shift. It has now been at tanner for 2 months. I have not received 1 phone call regarding my car. If I want to know what's going on I have to call myself. I have been promised over and over that I will have my car by ___ date and it doesn't happen. I leave a voicemail nearly every day and never get a call back. I did get ahold of someone named Brandon last month who told me that it didn't look like a transmission problem at all. Which is funny because it's the same problem that they said needed a super expensive rebuilt transmission. I called them today and someone named Jim actually answered the phone and I asked him if I could get an update on my car. He said "it's being worked on". I told him I knew that and would like to know when I can have it back. I do not have other transportation for work. I was told I would have it back by Monday 7/30 but never even heard from tanner until today. Jim said he would call me back and let me know about my car today. That was 4 hours ago. My husband has talked to his good friend who is our lawyer and is waiting to hear if we need to proceed with legal action since I can't get anywhere with a phone call read more

I needed a rebuild on my transmission for my truck. I took it in and had a positive experience with the owner. They worked quickly and I was soon back on the road. Unfortunately, not 3 months later I ended up coasting down a highway with no gears what-so-ever. Had the truck towed back into town and called Blaine. I described the problem which he quickly pointed out might be the transfer case. Also, unfortunately, I had moved out of state and could not get the truck into his shop for him to look at, so I took it to a local transmission shop to get a diagnosis. Yep, it was the transfer case. Apparently it was out of fluid with no apparent leak. Called Blaine again, to see if we could work out some sort of deal, but I was told that it was not his problem, that they only warrantied the transmission and not the transfer case. Fair enough, but I was under the impression that the transfer case had to be removed and re-attached when working on the transmission. He also said, that they don't check the fluid in the transfer case, just pull it, top it off (or not, in my case), and reconnect it. I may be completely wrong, but I would expect a transmission shop to take care of the whole transmission, transfer case, and fluid when working on it. Maybe I have to take may car to the transmission shop, then to another shop to have the fluids checked. That seems a bit much. IMO, because of his tech's work, I am now responsible to cover another $1500 in repairs that I don't think should have happened if they had done their job. I am completely frustrated with this shop's level of customer service and the desire to back their work. I guess because I am no longer in the area, customer service or doing good work doesn't mean anything. I expect it would have been an entirely different story if I could have towed my truck directly to their shop. Unfortunately, integrity must not cross state lines. read more

I had a problem with the transmission on my motorhome, and they went out of their way to get me fixed up in one day. I called them on a Thursday, and made an appointment for Monday. They got right on it and I was back on the road Monday afternoon. This will be my first call should I ever be in this area and need service! Having been in the service industry for many years before my retirement, I know a well run and honest shop when I see one! read more

As many other reviews say: DON'T GIVE THIS SHOP YOUR BUSINESS. At any of their locations. The owner is a terrible person. My grandparents took 2012 Equinox in (1 owner) that was in perfect condition for a transmission flush. My grandparents always do regular maintenance on their vehicles and take very good care of everything they own. About an hour after they gave the car to Tanner, they got a call saying that the car had something severely wrong with it. They told my grandma that they would need to rebuild her trans. So she agreed thinking they were being honest. Well come to find out after they had her car for over a month and put 700 miles on it and wouldn't tell her which location it was at, they STOLE HER TRANMISSION AND PUT A TRANSMISSION THAT WAS FOR A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT vehicle IN HER CAR. Her speedometer would say she was going 75 MPH, but she was going 95 MPH. This is so dangerous. They won't fix the car. They avoid Her calls. My Grandma has a receipt showing all of the Labor and parts they put in her "Original" Transmission, when in reality they put a crap transmission for a completely different vehicle in her car and let her drive on the road. I am completely heart broken that this company has taken advantage of my sweet RETIRED grandma. She payed $4000 in cost just to get nothing but terrible things in return. read more

DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS - they will seriously rip you off. We were in a pinch last year when our transmission on our truck went out. We were in the middle of moving into our new house and needed to have our truck back ASAP because of that. Tanner is the one who towed our truck to their shop so my husband decided that we would let them do the work on it because then the tow would be "free". We ended up spending $3,400+ for a rebuild. Pretty steep price for a rebuild (or at least on the higher end of one) Here's the part where it gets bad and I truly, truly hope this keeps you away from Tanner. They offered us a warranty on the transmission rebuild but what they failed to tell us was that the warranty was voided if we didn't bring the truck in annually for a transmission "service" which would cost us $249 each year. There are so many things wrong here: 1. How can you call that a warranty? It's not a warranty if I have to pay you annually for a service for the next 5 years. a. You should check my transmission annually - absolutely! I need to be sure that it is still in good shape and that your work is holding up. I wholeheartedly agree with having to come in annually to have it checked. You should NOT, however, charge me to do this. If it's a warranty, it should be free....as part of the warranty. And if, for some reason, you really had to charge me, you should charge me for parts only, not labor. Which Brian (the manager) specifically told me he was charging for both. 2. They wanted to charge me $249 for the service a. I actually called 10 different repair shops (some dedicated to transmissions) and EVERY SINGLE ONE of them, quoted me less than $249. And I made sure to ask what it would cost to just "service" the transmission and what a transmission flush along with the service would cost - even with the flush added on, they were still below $249. b. As mentioned earlier, they shouldn't be charging me for this anyway as it should be part of the warranty, but since they were, it should be cheaper than their competitors. Especially since the next closest bid was $189 and I'd already spent OVER $3,400 with them. 3. Each place I spoke with, told me a transmission service (where they change the filter and drain fluids, etc.) should only be done every 60,000-100,000 miles. And my *owner's manual* (what the freaking manufacturer of the vehicle) recommends, is every 60,000. a. So why would I need to get this annual service done when I've literally only driven it 5,000 miles in the last 12 months? And why would I go against a recommendation in my owner's manual? It doesn't make sense why I would need to bring my truck in to have this done annually, when multiple people and my manual have told me I only need it every 60,000 (on the low end). b. When I asked Brian about this he became very defensive and rude and said I had no idea what I was talking about and neither did the people that I had spoken to. They weren't "transmission experts". Even though he had no idea who had spoken to and that I had literally 10 different people all say the same thing but here Brian was, telling me something different. c. Doing this kind of service to my transmission is actually bad for it, and would cause wear and tear quicker, causing my transmission to fail right outside of the warranty period - most likely. Interesting that they require that... 4. Brian was extremely and unnecessarily rude to me when I was bringing up my concerns. I genuinely didn't understand why I was being charged in the first place for this, and why it was such an exorbitant amount compared to other places. And why he couldn't give me a good answer as to why I needed this service done in the first place. The answer he gave me was the following when I brought up what my owner's manual said: "well that's for the original, not for a rebuild." When I then asked what is the difference he started to tell me that if I didn't want to listen to him then fine, my warranty could be voided. He ended up hanging up on me. That's how rude he was. STAY AWAY from here. Seriously, they clearly just want to rip you and me off. read more

I called the Sunset Tanner Transmissions because of past excellent experience and service I received on my car at a different location. I spoke with Don & explained that my son's 97' Chevy Blazer transfer case was leaking large puddles of transmission fluid & he would have to add the ATF each time it would sit for a certain amount of time. Customer service in pricing and expected time frame was good. Not only that but after picking up the vehicle I noticed it leaked again while sitting at the shop, we discussed this issue and all decided to drive it and keep it overnight, if it still leaked to bring it back in. Next morning, same big type puddle, called Don and took the blazer back in again. This time Tanner Transmissions went over and beyond providing great customer service. Not only did the gasket needed replacing but the internal transmission harness O-ring was the culprit to the mass leakage problem also. This was replaced for free along with the 2.5 hours labor for a $10 part. Awesome service! Now if we can figure out where the "hovering airplane/helicopter" noise is coming from after all this work was done. Tanner Transmissions and us are stumped. Great job guys! I would still recommend going to Sunset Tanner Transmissions despite what other reviews in the past have said. These guys here have proved to be worthy in providing great customer service. Update: just an FYI, if you're hearing this type sound after fixing your transfer case problems, your transfer case switch needs to be replaced. The part is about $20 you can fix it yourself. read more

DO NOT take your car to this shop. We took our truck in for a transmission replacement and the mechanic did something/forgot to do something (like put oil in) and the engine seized on the way home. They tried to hide it from the owner by making the mechanic pay for the new engine out of pocket and working off hours, and it took us the better part of 2 months to get the truck back, after being cursed at and threatened by him and the temporary manager (the original one got fired). But when we went to drive it home there was still an obvious problem (I'm no mechanic, but I have ears). Got yelled at again when I went back into the shop for help. They said it was 'just a belt' - like I was supposed to know, raised the hood, sprayed something and walked away. I called the downtown location with the intention of speaking to the owner - who had been aware of the problem, but clearly left us hanging - hard to go without a car and get strung along when you work. But the owner refused to speak with me. The one bright spot was the manager of the shop on State street who had to replace a couple more things before it was fixed and I was on my way - 2 1/2 hours later. Filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and, surprise - they wouldn't respond. The problem with this business starts with the owner - they will not stand behind their people or their work. read more
