The chicken and biscuit breakfast was simple breaded chicken with no flavor on a basic biscuit. No sauce. No sweet heat. Just a choking hazard. I wanted some hot sauce for my omelette but had to wait 20 minutes just to ask for it. Instead of giving me hot sauce I got one of those white paper portion cups (like you get at fast food places) with a dollop of sauce. We took a long break from this place because they won't accommodate my handicapped mother-in-law for trivia night but decided to give it a go since we have a visitor this weekend. The bar staff was outstanding from start to finish. We had a few different bartenders taking care of us, and each one was attentive, friendly, and great at helping with recommendations. We ordered the New York steak and the Brussels sprouts special. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium, and the Brussels sprouts hit that ideal balance--crispy, flavorful, and just right. Everything we had was packed with flavor. The drinks didn't miss either--ice-cold beer and expertly crafted cocktails all around. If you find yourself in Charleston, this spot is absolutely worth a visit. Highly recommend.

Loved the loaded asparagus, but I wish it had been a more generous portion. Chicken and cauliflower was well seasoned. The chicken was tender and the grilled chicken sandwich was also a hit. The picture is really a "secret"... you take your life into your hands going down into the "speak-cheesy!" The handrail was pretty rickety and the flooring really should be replaced.... Bonus, they served Pepsi products. I ordered the spaghetti with meat sauce and a small salad, which was served with garlic bread. The sauce was great! I know it was cooked for a long time as the green peppers did not give me heat burn. And the portion was huge. Way more than I could eat for lunch. The salad was also bigger than I expected. The garlic bread was soft, just the way I like it. I tasted my Mom's fried fish, which was hot and yummy! And the green beans were soft, which was perfect to me. My Dad's liver and onions looked good if that's your cup of tea. He said the meat was tender. My Mom and I shared the homemade blackberry cobbler topped with ice cream. Deeeeeeliscious! I highly recommend this dessert. If you like country home cooking, this is this spot to try!

The Magnolia House on Park is a hidden gem nestled by the river at the end of the street. The covered screened-in porch is set for multi-season use, with ceiling fans and multiple fireplaces. We were promptly greeted and chose a corner table (which was custom-built from 100-year old barn wood). The menu changes daily along with a selection of entree salads. We decided to dine "family style" and chose chicken and dumplings and meatloaf. Our sides included a house salad (I had the house-made orange zest dressing; my companion chose Thousand Island), green beans, mashed potatoes, and corn. These were served with rolls that literally melted in your mouth. Before the main course was served, we enjoyed some of the best fried green tomatoes we've ever eaten. The portions are generous, and they gladly boxed up our leftovers--and I look forward to having those tomorrow. Though we were thoroughly satisfied, we were unable to pass on dessert--all homemade. I had the lemon berry mascarpone cake, which was served with a side of fresh whipped cream. My friend had the pumpkin pie--which was the perfect taste of fall. We both had Magnolia Iced tea --garnished with lemon, orange, and a sprig of organic mint. Bottomless refills are available, and our attentive server kept our glasses filled. We had the distinct pleasure of meeting the proprietor/cook, her daughter (our server) and her mother. Magnolia House on Park is a labor of love--something that shines through in every bite. Before we left, we enjoyed some retail therapy in the boutique, which features items from local artisans and books from local authors. We can't wait for our next visit!
