I had never been to Sandpoint before and we wanted to have a quick get away to celebrate our birthdays. I wanted a unique experience a corporate hotel could not provide. Talus was eclectic, artistic and it felt like we were a guest in somebody's amazing house. It was a midweek stay. Maybe there was another couple there. We had the house to ourselves. That night we saw deer grazing out back and it snowed overnight. We woke up to a beautiful scene which included a few people ice skating on the frozen pond. We were in the Kipling suite which had a jet tub big enough for two people to swim is. It had a mini fridge, microwave, small coffee maker with coffee. A definite off the norm place to relax. The venue was really nice but the Murder Mystery was less than what we hoped. The food was just ok and the mystery was confusing, not well planned and not given the attention it needed to make it fun. We stood around for way too long,given instructions that took all of 5 minutes and then stood around again for another way to long. There just weren't enough innovative and planned things to do. Spectacular traditional post and beam construction. All of the posts and beams are recovered from one of two old logging mills that were torn down (had a beer with the caretakers and learned the history). The fireplace is awesome and a nice place to relax after a great day of skiing at Schweitzer followed by a plunge in the hot tub to sooth the tired muscles! We loved the Syringa Suite's heated floor and private hot tub access. Can't wait to come back! read more

We stayed at this location for a family members wedding. The location is beautiful and conveniently close to town. The house is charming but incredibly outdated. The furniture in our room was dingy and old looking. Nothing matched aesthetically and the bed was way too firm, it felt like I was laying on the ground. We only had 3 hangers and 1 broke with one shirt on it and just fell apart. The location was perfect for an outdoor wedding, it was beautiful outside over all but im giving it 3 stars for how expensive it is for such outdated uncomfortable rooms. I would recommend and would love to return someday if the beds, furniture and bedding were updated and more comfortable. read more

Wow!! This family home has been turned into an amazing B&B with more amenities than they can truly announce. I have enjoyed my time here on a "staycation" retreat from everyday life as wide, housekeeper, moon, business owner and sole employee of a flourishing business. My husband sent me her on the beginning of the B&B's off season to give me time away to rest and recoup from our busy life. I have to say he chose very well! My wife and I selected Talus Rock as the venue for our wedding. We planned a small wedding with less than 30 guests. All the attendees were family who stayed with us at Talus Rock. We spent over $12,000 dollars on the property rental alone for Thursday evening through Sunday morning.The property is managed by a husband-and-wife team who work for the owner. The husband/wife have awful, unprofessional attitudes.The plan we chose for the weekend rental gave us the entire home, this included the main kitchen and its appliances, but the husband/wife had not emptied their food out of the main kitchen refrigerator, so we had to wait for them to clean it out. The next morning, I am informed by my daughter-in-law that her bathroom sink is overflowing, she had just washed her hands and brushed her teeth, so she did not cause the sink issue and it was clear that this was a problem long before we got on property. The towels in every room were mismatched and very old, some literally were so old they felt gritty and dried out, some had tears and small holes. The property boasts a pool and spa as well as a hot tub. The hot tub was great, the pool was dirty and the spa non-functional. About an hour before our ceremony one of my family brought to my attention that where we had put the chairs for the guests to sit in during the wedding and the aisle that my wife was going to walk down had multiple piles of dog poop. When this was brought to the husband/wife they agreed to clean it up but were clearly upset that they had to do so and made comments "under their breath" that some of my family overheard - "this is all dry and like a rock what is the big deal?" About 15 min before the ceremony the wife came and found me and insisted that we have one of our vehicles moved because it was parked in "her" parking spot. I went into the lot and looked there were 5 other parking spots with in 30 feet or less of "her" spot that she could have parked in. She is in fine health and can easily walk, there was absolutely no need for us to move the vehicle except for the fact that SHE did not like it there! I had to find my son (who was with his mother enjoying time before the ceremony) and ask him to go out and move his vehicle. Just before my wife was to walk down the aisle two maintenance staff who were supposed to be off property started walking into the middle of our ceremony - realizing what they had done the turned around and disappeared. After the wedding, later in the evening we are having drinks and such in the back yard around the fire pit when a quad motorcycle starts riding around in the outer back yard and another guy starts stand boarding in the pond, both of them talking very loudly to each other. At this point I had it! I found the maintenance guys and shared a thought or two with them - I was not kind. Then I walked around to the husband/wife apartment door - read the sign "DO NOT KNOCK - call this number .... ECT" - I knocked and yelled - not a single word from the wife who had answered the door, she just stood there, I waited a short moment still no response, so I walked away telling her to fix this. The next morning, we all packed up early (check out 11:00 AM - we left around 9:00 AM) and the family got going. My wife, son-in-law, daughter, and I stayed to finish up checking the house and doing the last-minute packing. I did not trust the husband/wife at all and photographed the ENTIRE property in detail so as not to be accused of anything. In summary, to do it all again - NOT AT TALUS ROCK FOR SURE! I had really hoped to make this a family destination for years to come, a place where we could gather and have wonderful memories and create great new memories. But my wife and I have discussed our feelings, paying over $4000.00 per day to have a place for us to stay for the wedding was truly not worth it. read more

I was seriously going to lose my shit! they were going to take my money if I didn't show up no if's and's or buts. so I told them I'd come up sick and stay quarantined in my room. then it was a different story but I had to pay 50 dollars to change the date of the stay. they didn't apply the 327.20 from the old reservation, which i didn't know till too late, they charged me again and the new total was 490 dollars. so now they have 850 some of my dollars. old res was for aug 9th, still havnt gotten any of my money back and wish I would have never considered talus rock. not sure the pedersons should be running a business and dealing with people! read more

We stumbled upon this place after camping in MT and ID for a week, and were grateful for a luxurious final stop and a shower. All of the Staff are amazing, and worked hard to make our time there special. They also gave us GREAT dinner recommendations to family run restaurants in the area. 5 stars on initial friendliness but 0 star for business practices. Place looked great on Yelp and Yelp happened to be offering a $210 voucher for $185. When I called the hotel to book a stay I was giving pricing but when I mentioned Yelp's voucher I was told that I need it to purchase the voucher and book through Yelp which sounded odd. I purchased the voucher for $185 but couldn't book room. When I called back, a different person answered the phone who told me there was no such thing as a Yelp offer or special agreement with them. I assured her in which she asked for proof in which I had to email snap shots of my screen. After that she then asked me for proof of payment in which I had to send her another snap shot of my credit card charge. At this point I'm very concerned that Yelp might of gotten hacked and that my credit card information was now compromise. After having to wait and wait on her to call me back I ended up calling again in which I was giving the reservation. I was so excited that I sent the pictures of the place to my wife and kid since I was doing it for them. They were so excited. Well, a few minutes later I received an email with the charges. When I looked at it my mouth dropped. Couldn't believe it had a different price from what I was quoted on my first call. At first I thought I was being charged for two nights but that was not the case. It also had a $12 convenience fee for using my credit card. I can tell you that if I had these fees/charges disclosed to me before hanging up on the phone I would have never purchased the $185 voucher or agreed to pay a convenience charge. At this point I was pretty upset but made the choice to be polite and maybe choose a different room specially since I had already purchased the voucher. After looking at their cite I found another room available for the night I need it. Nobody picked up when I called so I sent them an email. Their response was, that room is not available. I looked on their cite again and it still showed available. I sent them a screen shot but their reply was a long explanation. At this point I realized I was at the wrong place and needed to walk away. read more

My husband and I took a wonderful road trip to North Idaho. In planning our trip, my husband happened to come across Talus Rock. He wasn't sure if he wanted to stay there, since it was not on Lake Pend Oreille. After speaking to Heather, the owner, he changed his mind since she was so friendly and gave him a lot of information on Sandpoint. When you pull up to Talus Rock, you feel like you've been swept to another world. The place is like a castle. All the rooms are incredible - intricately and carefully designed. We stayed in the Grand Arbor room. It has a beautiful copper ceiling (especially when lit up), amazing views of the mountains and the Talus grounds, a tree shower and Jacuzzi tub for two. Everyone there made us feel comfortable and welcomed. They offer breakfast, laundry services and pets. It's very peaceful and serene. Highly recommend Talus Rock! read more

My sister-in-law and I booked same time massages at Talus Rock (we weren't staying there) at 1:00 on a Thursday. We were told we could come early to enjoy the spa (hot tub and sauna, but no showers) ahead of time or after the massage. We were told there was a $25 spa fee, but for this time only, it would be waived. My sister-in-law had her massage paid in advance as a gift from a friend, but I also had to pay (and tip) in advance (a little odd to tip ahead of a service, but I did). We chose to come at 11:30, but called ahead to say we would be there at noon instead. When we arrived, we were told that a voicemail had been left at 10:45 (which we did not get or listen to because we were en route), that said one of the therapists wasn't able to come in. We wondered why nothing was said when we called and said we were coming at noon instead if 11:30. So, there we were at noon, and were told we would either need to do back-to-back at 1:00 and 2:00, or come back the next day. We sat around waiting for an hour, only to find out that the person who said they could do the back-to-back massages...actually wasn't available! We booked for the next day at 10 and 11 and were told we would get a phone call to confirm. We never got a phone call, so we called back and we were indeed booked for back-to-back massages the next day. While one of us received a massage, the other took time to use the sauna and hot tub. I chose the hot tub, as the sauna was very small and uncomfortable (no way to lie down or lean back). I thought the hot tub smelled a little off, but I wasn't sure if it was chlorine or something else. I got in, and within five minutes my eyes were burning, and the steam coming off of the tub was a very strong burning smell of ammonia. I immediately got out and told one of the women in the office that something was off with the hot tub. She responded by saying "Oh, it just needs a little more water and maybe needs to be checked by the maintenance." I am a personal owner of a hot tub. I have never smelled a hot tub like this, and I use chlorinated products and shock and everything that is required. It was so strong and unpleasant, so I requested a shower. They let me shower in one of the units that was not being rented at the time, and I was very grateful. However, it wasn't until I took another shower later in the afternoon that I actually felt like I no longer smelled like ammonia. All I can say is I am so glad we did not pay a $25 fee each for the "spa experience." The sauna was incredibly small and placed at the top of the stairs where it was easy to hear the conversation of all the people below. The door does not click shut all the way, and the space is not comfy. But honestly, the sauna experience was nothing compared to the hot tub. Also, not a hook to be found in a bathroom, massage room, outside for towels, bathrobes, or clothes. The massage was incredible and it was five-star. Our massage therapist was Cory Nowlin, highly recommend. On a final note, Jesus seems to be everywhere in Talus. It is a God-inspired, Christian-based retreat center and lodge. There is a book on the coffee table detailing the family and business. We did not know this when we booked our massages, but it was very clear when we were there. We might be Christian, or we might not be. Nobody's business. What if we were Buddhists? Or Muslims? Religion is so personal, and I don't want to hear about it at the grocery store, in my yoga class, or at a place of massage, for that matter. But a place of business that has pictures of Jesus in the massage room and psalms and Christian themes throughout should advertise itself as such, so that patrons can be aware, and completely comfortable and at ease. read more

Checked in June 16th. The facility is very nice. All wood carvings and logS from floor to ceiling in main lobby. Very beautiful, however they are building a new addition to there resort and it is noisy, dusty and loud during working hours. I think they are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, so many of the services that are stated on website are not available. The room was very nice and clean. There is a kitchen, but no kitchen utensils or cups or glasses or anything. The staff is at a minimum. I have seen 3 so far. To get anything you need to go to the main lobby and request it. In the main lobby is a small refrigerator with drinks and sodas at cost. And a small table with sundries to purchase. Like I said there is nothing in your room to consume. We stayed in the syringa suite. The website said the suite was very private. Outside the French doors is a hot tub for the entire resort to use. The web said a private entry, the door is completely glass with no shade or blocking. Anyone can look right in. Worst of all there is glass windows in the ceilings. The room upstairs has a balcony which they can look down into our kitchen and bedroom. How can anyone think that's ok is beyond me. Breakfast was just ok. Nothing special. Talus Rock is an incredible get away. It is convenient and peaceful. We spent only one night in the Grand Arbor room, but we felt like we had a weeks vacation. We opted to have massages and it was by far the best massage I have ever had. The scenery and nature trail were unbelievably delightful. The attention to detail and fine touches were inexplicably unparalleled. Breakfast was delicious. We shall return and highly recommend Talus Rock Retreat. It's an eclectic, amazing adventure... Truly beautiful grounds, a restful commons area, and the room we had was stunningly beautiful as well. It's hard to put into words just how gorgeous this place was. We stayed for a few nights some weeks back and we're still talking about it. (They are dead serious about the no-cancellations policy, by the way--so be very, very certain before you lay down your green for a reservation. The young lady taking my reservation was very clear and up-front about that point. It does seem draconian, but it's not like they hide that fact.) We had the Arbor Room--and yes, it's pricy--but the second my husband saw it on their website, with the shower-tree and tower ceiling, he just stopped cold and said "... WOW." So that's what we got. And it was exactly what was advertised: spacious, comfortable, and containing a great many perks and facets. Besides the shower-tree we had a HUGE jetted tub, a comfortable bed, a dining nook, huge windows, a door that opened to a patio deck with chairs to lounge in (not private though that part), his & hers sinks with plenty of storage space and towels, a private room for the toilet, a microwave and coffee maker (with packets of coffee and whatnot for use) along with plates, mugs, and silverware, and there were even plenty of outlets for our gadgets right where we needed them and sleeping masks in case the daylight got too bright if we slept in. And the breakfasts served in the common area were delicious--all vegetarian IIRC, with egg dishes, fruit of various kinds, and something flour-based. The gentleman cooking these breakfasts found out about my husband's dietary needs immediately and we had no trouble at all. Also, the retreat has a large hot tub outside on that deck. It wasn't filled at the time, but it was also too cold for me to want to be outside in a swimsuit so I didn't mind. The grounds around the lodge itself are very well-maintained and were fun to ramble around on foot--and it feels like it's in the middle of nowhere, but it's just a short jaunt by car to the downtown part of Sandpoint. We saw deer all along the drive in and out of the lodge every morning and twilight that we were outside. I'd want to make one suggestion to them about more clearly marking the steps in the room--I tripped a couple of times when it was dark or I was tired and forgot about the step when coming in. Talus was well worth the cost. Basically it's a very upscale bed & breakfast--one that my husband and I greatly look forward to visiting again. I highly recommend the lodge as a whole, but especially the Arbor Room. If you're gonna do it, you might as well go big. And if you're thinking of renting the place for a dream wedding, I think you will be very pleased with the memories you make there. read more

However, the beds need some updating, the locks are not secure and the cancellation policy is ridiculous for this day and age. We came upon this place by sheer luck! The facility is beautiful and the innkeepers are great! Although I was on a work trip while staying here, they were very flexible with my work hours and extremely accommodating. My only regret is that I did not get to spend MORE time here. Wow! We found this B&B as it was the top rated on TripAdvisor and it did not disappoint. Talus Rock Retreat is just amazing, from the time we arrived we were greeted by the incredibly warm innkeeper Heather Pederson at this beautiful B&B right in the heart of Sandpoint. Our well-appointed and large guest room (Arbor room) had everything we needed - including a soaking tub and his and hers shower as well as beautiful views of the Selkirk mountain range. There are countless areas to sit and relax and enjoy the wonderful view, I just wish we could have stayed longer. We opted to pay a bit extra to have Heather prepare a full, hot organic breakfast and it was delicious. A 5-minute drive to downtown Sandpoint, this is way better than any hotel in town and the cost for the rooms goes entirely to their charity work so big bonus - tax deductible! Sleeping in the comfortable room with all the windows open and listening to the sounds of nature was priceless. We will definitely be back again. read more

My husband and I were welcomed by the owners and innkeepers as if we were friends or family, making us at once feel welcomed and at ease. We greatly enjoyed the spacious Arbor suite, the personal and whimsical touches of which add comfort to luxury (which is true of the entire house and grounds). Staying here was indeed a retreat for us- we were able to spend time by ourselves or visit with people as we chose. All of the service was personal, warm and friendly. My husband and I stayed here for a one night stay celebrating our anniversary. Caveat - we live in the area, so we already have an idea of the landscape and surroundings and TRR did not disappoint. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. and the house is incredible. We stayed in the Kipling room (each is different and is named for a family member.) Our gorgeous huge tub with tile surround was lovely and the bed was extremely comfortable. In the morning, the attendant was ready to make a breakfast to order or get this: invited us to make it ourselves if we liked. Breakfast offerings were ample and we enjoyed a leisurely morning while watching the Canada Geese squawk over territory. The grounds are stunning, with many options to ramble, fish, or just enjoy the scenery. We didn't take advantage of the hot tub, but how invigorating it must have been in our 35 degree March weather. I look forward to just dropping by in the Spring or Summer just to see the lovely grounds. Just a heads up: The Google Map brought us to the mailbox, but we didn't see the entrance at first. A small sign would be helpful. Also, there is a very informative booklet describing the history and goals (worthy charities around the world) of the Retreat, but the booklet itself could use a bit of updating as the Sandpoint area is changing as all towns do. I am sure the staff would be happy to help and guide anyone who has further questions. read more

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying for a quick over night getaway (Dec. 2013). We stayed in the Arbor room, AMAZING. The staff are all about making your stay as relaxing as possible. Their restaurant recommendations were on point! Not only is the property beautiful but the work they do is amazing. We look forward to future visits when visiting Idaho again. I rarely post a review, but I was really not happy with the customer service. I booked a room in June for an August stay. I needed to cancel the booking, but was told that I would have had to do that 48 hours after making the booking. This is a full month before I am supposed to stay there. They states I could cancel and if, only IF, they rented the room, would they give me a 50% credit for another stay or refund 25%!!! Shame on me for not seeing that on the confirmation. I glanced at the confirmation and just thought I could cancel the booking 48 hours before the stay. Nope! I just wanted to say - Buyers Beware - don't book this unless you are 100% sure you can go and definitely don't book way in advance!!! Needless to say I am going to have to keep the booking and figure out how to make it there. In a day and age where there is so much competition for people's dollars, this is an archaic way to handle business, especially when they can rent this out in a heart beat due to the time of year and the Festival at Sandpoint. read more
