THE SCENE
I know little to nothing about guns and shooting ranges... except for the old Duck Hunt game on Atari (which I used to be fairly good at). I'd only been shooting once decades ago, and it was indoor.
So while visiting my son during his very impromptu wedding weekend, all the guys thought it would be a good idea to go shoot some rounds as sort of a Bachelor Party celebration. What is more American Male than that, eh?
Truthfully, I'm not really into it, but my youngest two boys were super stoked. So I said "SURE! Why not!" My son is ex-military and was thrilled at the opportunity to be the first to train his younger siblings. They in turn were out-of-their-mind excited to learn. So much so in fact that I think we might make this a regular monthly thing. After all, considering all that is going on in the world today, it didn't seem like a bad idea to get them trained to defend themselves. More on that later.

THE EXPERIENCE
My son first took us to a place called Kevin's to buy several rounds of ammo. He said it was much cheaper than buying @ Talon. Next we arrived @ Talon's main office, watched a 10 minute safety video, took a test based on the video and signed waivers.
There are two times in life I've been uncomfortable signing waivers. One was when I went sky diving and the other here. Basically, you are giving up any legal rights to pursue them in the event you are injured or killed.
Next we drove to the actual shooting field, where we go inside another building to pick-up our gear, pay for all participants and pick our range. Some have metal targets while others use paper targets. There were no metal target ranges available, but my son requested to be notified IF one became available while we were shooting on a paper range. It did, so we were lucky the younger boys had a chance to practice on both!
We shot using both 30mm & 45mm pistols. I did one round of each while my sons did about 5 rounds using each. While they did surprisingly good on the paper targets, they were practically Clint Eastwood on the metal targets. It was easy to physically see their excitement. All I had to say was "WOW son" and each of them would burst into a grin wider than Cheshire Cat! The youngest could not stop smiling the entire visit and eagerly showed his friends back home the video I took of him killing it on the range!
NOTES: Be sure to use ear protectors to keep from damaging your hearing. It was waaaay louder than I expected.

FINAL THOUGHTS
When I asked my sons why they wanted to go to the shooting range, I was expecting the normal male answer. "It would be fun" or something along the lines of "for the thrills". What I did not expect was this: "Dad, we are scared. With all that is going on, we just want to feel safe and learn how to defend ourselves."
As far as shots go, that struck me dead in my heart.
