This is not a store. The bad reviews are from people with unreasonable expectations. It's akin to showing up to a food bank and waiting a nasty review b/c they wouldn't let you buy the food. My wife introduced me to the Bike House. Our family has always ridden bikes for recreation in Tallahassee. All of our children are now grown and gone. My wife and I started riding again. A couple of our bikes needed minor repairs. She had visited the Bike House from time to time and met Scot. She thought it's mission was good for the community. When I finally visited there, I did not feel as welcomed the way she spoke of. I thought it was just a male thing at first. It took a couple of visits to see the real operation. Our son was looking to purchase a bike, Luis brought out the first bike. It had no kickstand. it look liked a piece of crap. He wanted $ 80.00. The second bike wasn't that much better for $120.00. Of all the bikes, that's in the House. Over priced! They were really tripping. My most recent visits to the Bicycle House was not a pleasant experience. After complaining about the service I received for my bikes not being repaired properly. Luis attempted to explain the charges, which I disagreed with. I felt the cost was too high. In addition, he told me the cost would be $16.00 per bike, totaling $32.00. When I picked up the bikes, he charged me $72.00. . I asked Luis, how he determined what amount to charge customers. He said, there is a chart posted inside. Also, it's based on a person ability to pay. I'm not sure what it was based on, how I looked, or what I drove? Again, the gears on my bike were not working properly and the tire went flat. I took it back again, they charged an additional $10.00, only had $5.00 at the time. Should he have charged me again? I don't think so. Our bikes weren't repaired as expected. On one occasion, they suggested a donation for the services rendered. The next time, a flat rate. In one visit, we paid twice. My wife had paid prior to me picking up the bikes. I made another donation. I have no problem paying my bill when it's done right. During my conversation with Luis, Due to CV-19, I never saw Scot, "the owner"; he stayed in the building. Scot apparently overheard the conversation I was having with Luis. Later that day, I received a long text message from Scot. He talked about the people they have served, his life story, how he saved 95,000 of his personal funds to support the operation, what school he attended, where his mother worked and why he sold his car and is riding a bike now. BLAH BLAH BLAH!!!!. What does that have to do with me? He never came out to address my concerned. I did not ask for a hand out, I wanted my bikes fixed so we could ride. "It's all about power and control". This experienced taught me a valuable lesson, you don't always get what you pay for....People aren't always who the pretend to be, no matter who's House it is! If you go here, you might not want to expect courtesy or consistency because it's not really a bike shop. Rather, just a club which calls itself a bike shop. I suspect that they get some or all of their rent free since they are ostensibly a non-profit which recycles bikes. Someone will resentfully offer to help you but unless you're poor or desperate, you might not find the visit worthwhile. read more

This isn't a bike shop, it's more a collective that the owner is running as a non-profit. No insult to what they are trying to achieve with this place, just don't expect a bike shop with things to purchase if you go here. I was told that if I drove a car and had a job, I wasn't welcome in the store and I wasn't allowed to purchase anything from the shop. I was also told that the bike that I currently ride (a budget, steel frame Trek 820) was a terrible bike and that I needed to spend $1500-$2000 to enjoy riding in Tom Brown Park. The owner refused to answer my questions about whether I could purchase one of the used bikes that they had in the shop, instead choosing to talk vaguely about how only people who do not own vehicles or have a job are welcome in the shop. I don't have an issue with this kind of community, the problem is that this is being advertised as a place where anyone is welcome to purchase bicycle related items or peruse used bicycles. I would avoid this place if you are looking for a traditional bike shop. However, I could see the appeal of the place for someone looking for more of a community that centers around bicycle only transportation and wants to feel like they are a part of something. read more

Quite a few years ago I came to bicycle house looking for basic answers about riding a bike/commuting, I got roped into volunteering and learned so much. Bicycle House is more than a non profit that provides transportation to people in need, usually this means people with out cars and they are struggling to get to work but we have different people come in every day. Bicycle House for me, is a school, where I was able to successfully learn how to commute safely and comfortably and learn important basics about bike repair ex: brakes, changing flats, bike fit. I love bicycle house and volunteer a significant amount of my time because I want to help others just like I was helped. read more

I was biking cross country with my nephew (west to east) and barely made it into Tallahassee in desperate need of a new bottom bracket. Bicycle House was the closest "bike shop" so we stopped in not knowing anything about it. Scot found me a new bottom bracket at another bike shop, sent my nephew cross town to get it, installed it, shared a pizza, let us spend the night, and then escorted us out of town the next morning. Cost for bottom bracket installation: $0.00. Yes - this is most definitely not a traditional bike shop. But in what is sadly becoming an increasingly cynical and profit driven world, Bicycle House stands for something quite a bit different - a place to hang out, learn about bikes, and be part of a biking community. Nobody is interested in your money. You can make a donation or not. This is a great place with a wonderful atmosphere and wonderful people. read more
